Good late night food! We had a work trip to Stamford, CT in early February. Winter Storm Niko delivered 9-12" to northeast, cancelling flights. I WOULD get home for our daughter's sixth grade play the next night! So we took Amtrak from Stamford (STM) to Washington, D.C. (WAS), on Thursday, and flew American home from Reagan National on Friday. We arrived at Washington's Union Station at 11pm, and got checked into the hotel, next to Reagan around 11:30. We were hungry, but by time we got moving we could only locate bars serving drinks, and no food. Then we received a recommendation for Denny's. It turns out there are only two Denny's in the District. This one is solid... good food, a nice and clean restaurant, and a helpful and friendly crew. Walking home, in the snow, still buzzed from the happy hour that ended around midnight that somehow I forgot to order food at...and what do we have here? Denny's? Well, I'm probably too sauced and hungry to care that it's mediocre diner food served at an unfortunate hour. At least, that's what I was thinking. Wrong. Easily the cleanest, most welcoming Denny's I've been to: non-judgmental and prompt service of a tired and tipsy white dude in a suit, legitimately good decaf coffee, and, well, the Slamwich. My goodness, the Slamwich. Piping hot, crispy toast encompassing a heavenly egg...something? Omelette? Frittata? I don't know, but it was scrambled eggs, maple sausage, and I think something else melded together with a layer of ham and cheese on top for good measure. I finished half of it in under 2 minutes. And the hash browns, while no Waffle House, were cooked perfectly. 1100 calories later, I knew I had just been a part of something very special. I won't lie to you - if I were a third shift chef at a Denny's, I'd phone it in. But there was pride in this Slamwich. Hell, there's a lot you could get away with if you were running one of the only 24-hour restaurants in a not-well-traveled neighborhood, and I'd take it as par for the course and not dock points. But literally every expectation I had was surpassed. I don't take pictures of food in restaurants because I try not to be that person. Creative Waitressing for sure ! So I usually don't bother reviewing chains as the food typically doesn't differ but I just had to share my experience at this Denny's. I was in town visiting with my best friend and I wanted to grab a quick bite before getting on the road. We googled what was close and opted to go to this Denny's. The hostess that greeted us was very nice and it was refreshing that there was gospel music playing as we entered, I've never experienced that before. Our server was friendly and our food was as expected and we did not have any issues until it was time for the check to come . First it took a lot longer than it should have for our server Antoinette G to initially give us our check. We waited and looked around for her for 15 minutes. We then asked if it could be split because we both had cards, that took another 10 minutes and then when she returned with the split check she asked us to write the TOTAL amount and SIGN! As everyone knows typically your server processes your card with the total before gratuity and then you write your gratuity in, sign and leave. NOT the case for Ms. Antoinette G, she wanted to make sure you were giving her a tip ! She hovered over us as we wrote, talk about browbeating your customers ! My best friend wrote in her total and I did as well making mine an even number and leaving the majority of her tip in cash. She didn't even allow us to get up from the table before she snatched her cash tip, talk about classless! While I understand this Denny's is not in the best location, you cannot browbeat your customers into tipping you. I have NO problem tipping and have eaten in numerous establishments in the US and overseas and have never had someone ask me write my gratuity in before processing my card. Never again read more

Went here one night with a girlfriend after bible study, had to literally get up and search the resturant for my server THREE TIMES!! Then after finding her and asking for my bill she stood over me and stared me down for not writting in a tip to be added to my credit card!! (Umm I pay tips in cash!! Denny's is exactly what you would expect. Long waits on weekends, super cheap food for the same cheap quality. I'm not complaining about the prices at all, but I'd definitely need to knock off two stars for their take out orders. I called to place an order for pick up. I ordered eggs over medium, and received them raw. I mean, the whites around the yolk was translucent, so of course I didn't want to eat it. I wish the portions were bigger with regards to the protein (cmon bacon!) but as previously mentioned, the quality matches the price. read more

The food here is always good - and the service is nice. Been eating here for years actuslly.. but i just for the life of me don't understand why they do not secure the food before a delivery. This is the 4th time I'm receiving my food and it's completely opened and available to the delivery driver. You would hope that someone isn't that nasty as to eat your food out of your bag but unfortunately, it happens. I received my 4th order tonight and by this point I only buy two things: seasoned fries and an everyday value slam. My order of fries literally came with only a HALF carton of fries. I know for a fact they were being eaten because I order this same meal regularly and know the usual amount. I was so disgusted by it that I just tossed the fries all together. I've been coming to this Denny's since it opened and I've had a host of terrible experiences, but today I finally just walked out angry and hungry. I arrived at 6pm and was seated promptly, after 15 minutes I finally saw a server greet two other tables but never acknowledged me and my family. After another 10 minutes, the server took the orders from other tables and still nothing for us. I had 2 starving kids and the server looked past us like we didn't exist. We walked out hungry without an acknowledgment from management. I will probably return to receive mediocre service, I've learned to expect very little from this place. read more

It seems, from the reviews that people either love or hate this locations. We've driven by for years most weekends, but when I woke on Sunday, I felt like giving it a try. We went sunday afternoon about 1PM. Four parties ahead of us but was seated in 5 minutes or so. Food came out fast and was great. Diamond J was the best, but all seemed to be pleasant and nice. I couldn't see anyone being treated differently, so don't know where the discrimination against people of color or gays is coming from. We're gay and at least one other table was as well. Great service by Lashawn. It was a slow evening our food came quick. Our server was very attentive. Order the double cheese burger (it was greasy) and fries (fresh and hot). I would recommend avoiding the lemon wedges or ensure they drain the grease from the burger because later that evening I felt awful. However one of my guest order the caramel apple pie crisp. Although in an underserved area, the staff here treats you like gold! Very competent, very knowledgeable team. Everyone one here is friendly and obviously takes pride in their jobs and the Denny's they work in. During down time, the wait staff not serving customers are busily cleaning, helping the cooks, and making sure that customers have been helped. (MY GOD, this NEVER happens in DC!) Fist fights-not surprising in a restaurant, yet excellent customer service... Yes, very surprising in DC. LOL! This must be a sign of good management, because I've seen terrible service in DC, even the managers don't give a flip, but at this Denny's I see that it is possible to rehab DC's terrible customer service reputation. I hope the wait staff and more importantly the manager stays at this location but serve as an example of what people should expect in terms of customer service in DC. I will continue to come to this Dennys even if it is to get away from the ridiculousness of DC customer service. EVERYONE Should Support this restaurant and its Manager. I went here at like 3am on a Sunday morning, the place was full of people that were clearly drunk but that didn't stop Brittney from seating me and my 2 friends. I've been here many times and normally order the sampler which is normally a combination of appetizers. Once the food arrived, I was not disappointed. Everything was made to perfection. Brittney was so nice during the whole experience, she made sure I had everything I needed. She even helped me deliberate between ranch and barbecue sauce. Where do I begin. I won't waste your time talking gibberish so let's get right to it. The Waiter spilled drinks on my grandmother and my mother. Their shoes were wet! The manager was nice and offered to take a percentage off the bill. Cool beans. I didn't think things could get worse from there. The chef also had the nerve to forget the cheese too! The waiter disputed she heard differently. Not too much debate from her though. She eventually left and returned with an empty plate. She stood there as if we knew what she wanted and pushing the plate inches from my mother's face. My mother had to ask her what it is she wanted. Waiter response, "Oh I don't know she told me to come and get the eggs." We had to scrape the eggs onto the empty plate. Oh ok, good to know! If she had brought back those same eggs with sprinkled with cheese and microwaved reheat I would have had a fit! The service sucked altogether. Every individual experience is different and if you are a foodie or restaurant goer like me you understand how the quality of the food and service is very important EVERY time. I have been to this Denny's multiple times and whenever I'm in the neighborhood I make sure I stop by for their smoothie is simply AWESOME. Whenever I go I always get greeted with a smile and seated right away, except if it's a weekend where the place is packed but that understandable due to the Saturday brunch crowd and Sunday church crowd. I am very picky about breakfast and after going to places like Founding Farmers and Blue Duck Tavern adding this this place to my go to places says a lot. Let's talk food. I usually order their steak and cheese omelet or T-bone steak and eggs and have yet to be disappointed my food is always hot, and my steak is always cooked to perfection. I substitute the toast that comes with it with pancakes (Yes you can do that at no extra charge... thank me laterJ). I get mushrooms, green peppers and onions to my steak and potatoes, soo yummy. Maybe it's because I understand that this is a restaurant and not a fast food place that I don't go crazy when it's a packed house and my steak takes a little longer. After all it is raw food they put on the grill not precooked. If you want your food in 5 min go to the McDonalds up the street instead. Quality food takes care and time, I'm sure we would all be mad if our food took 5 min but was undercooked. As far as servers go it's hit or miss but I never got a mean or rude one. I tend to believe if you walk in there with a smile, you will be greeted with one in return. The last time I was there the owner even came out to say hello and asked if everything was ok. Which to my surprise was an African American man. Who knew it was a black owned business (that is a plus for me, I love to support minorities owned establishments). Ok this is getting pretty long but I get sooo excited talking about great places with even greater food. I would go here over Ihop any day! No they don't have scrapple but that's not a make or break for me. Give it a try I have yet to be disappointed by this place.
