Background: two women in their late 20'S. Four points for food: ordered Jaeger Schnitzel and their Weiner Schnitzel. Both were deliciously crisp and had great sauerkraut on the side. Service: (this is without the later unannounced/unwelcome woman) very prompt and courteous. Be aware like others mentioned, Visa is not accepted. Environment: so quiet and awkward. At the end of the meal, a shorter, older woman approached our table asking if the food was alright. We both said yes and she answered with "Is a problem?". We said no and she counteracted with "You were yelling". Number one, yelling in that restaurant would include anything over a quiet whisper with the lack of laughter/music/convo. Second, the man behind me was talking just as loud without any further notice from the angry German grandma. I don't accept slight sexism where ever it may appear. Moral of the story: come here if you are tired of waiting but don't speak up if you are female. We went to Fredericksburg just before the New Year. This was my second time to this lovely place and first time for my boyfriend. We had late breakfast that day and this was a perfect spot. Even though, Fredericksburg has many German restaurants, but we decided to come here. My boyfriend had schnitzel and I had a sample plate. Red cabbage and potato salad was delicious. Service was a little slow, but this is so home style place that all little things don't matter. Great place, food and I had amazing company (that is always important). Always! Bring CASH. Biggest (only) downside to this place. Staff and food were authentic and wonderful! We really enjoyed our time. Restaurant is small, so if you're visiting on a weekend, expect to wait outside as there is no waiting area. Husband had jäger schnitzel which was savory with yummy potatoes. He raved about the purple cabbage/sour kraut and his German dark beer. I loved my curry chicken plate w pineapple. Mmmm. Can't say enough. Chicken was tender and the pineapple was the perfect pairing of sweet to the curry's spicy. Served w rice which was amazing - and I'm not a fan of rice. I can't quite name what seasoning was in the rice, but the whole dish was perfect. We finished w a slice of delishiously moist German chocolate cake (because 'when in Rome') and it too didn't fail to disappoint. They can improve by buying more than 1 high chair. It was already taken when we were seated, so our 9 month old sat on our laps and later on the floor. :/ However we loved our time so much that I would absolutely come back, but with cash and the stroller. Enjoyed our supper here very much. I ordered the goulash, and my wife got the jaeger schnitzel, and both were exceptional. The service was friendly. We are early so there wasn't much of a crowd. This place is definitely passed its prime, and it is in need of better staff. When we walked in, we were only greeted with the statement, "2?" Then we were pointed to a table. We were not told the specials, though others were. The menus were falling apart. We were served drinks in disposable plastic cups. Our waiter seemed more interested in talking to his co-worker than in serving customers. The dessert "menu" consisted of walking up to the cooler and pointing at what you want. The food was decent, but did not make up for the bad service. Plus, they don't take Visa or MasterCard, but they take AMEX and Discover??? I recommend you go down the street to the Rathskellar instead, where the food is comparable, but the atmosphere and service are worlds better. read more

The two stars is generous and granted solely on the merits of their delicious desserts. After a wonderful day at the (highly recommended) Becker Vineyard, my son and a friend of my mine headed to Der Lindenbaum since the German restaurant across the street was packed, even at mid-afternoon. At Der Lindenbaum, we were the only ones in the restaurant. Somewhere in the distance, you could hear the call of a whippoorwill. The second indication was that there wasn't any hot water in the men's washroom. My personal rule is to normally inform the management and then leave, but given a hungry five year old, I made an exception. We ordered the Wiener schnitzel plate and a bratwurst plate. The schnitzel came out in about three minutes after ordering, which wasn't a good (third) sign. In fact, it looked like (and tasted like) leftover lunch was thrown in the microwave. The red cabbage was oh, so sad, and the potato salad was a bit lukewarm. Even the three lemon slices on the schnitzel (and in my iced tea) were brown and dry. The bratwurst plate was a bit better since (thankfully) brats fair a bit better in a microwave; but again, the sides were simply mediocre. I honestly regretted every bite and was a bit irritated at myself for not commenting, but given the lack of attention, I felt that it would fall on deaf ears. Fredericksburg is a charming town and for this native Texan who's contemplating a return, it brought back lots of memories. Der Lindenbaum will definitely be a memory I will try to forget. read more

Everyplace in Fredericksburg is experiencing shortage of help! We were looking for a real German dinner and our first choices were closed on Wednesdays. Der Lindenbaum was our option on Main Street. The place was crowded for early supper and wait staff was nice. Our food came quickly but then the waitress said they were out of both red cabbage and butter! The cooks choice of potatoes was two very small scoops of maybe a mashed potato. I bought a jar of red cabbage at Opa's Meat Market along with wurst sausages and we had our German dish at home with canned German Potato Salad. read more

This is the worse German Restaurant I have ever visited and that includes many in Germany where I have traveled. Five of us from a tour group went to this restaurant, because I had read about it on the web, and I insisted on going there. At opening time on a Wed, we were the second group of customers. We were told we had to have one table ticket which necessitated each of us trying to figure out what our part of the bill came to. The first group did not have the one ticket and there were five of them. We asked why we had the one ticket and were told it was the management's rule. Then they had no sandwiches, ( what I wanted was a Ruben sandwich) because it was Wed we were told, and they would have a big crowed. Figure that one out. Sayer kraut they served on every plate, and how difficult is it to have a corned beef on hand and even precut. We only wanted a small meal, but were forced, if we wanted anything to eat, to order a plate which had sauer kraut (of a very weak version of real German sauer kraut) and German potato salad. I never saw or heard of real German potato salad which was sweet mashed potatoes served up in an ice cream scoop like you would get at a school cafeteria. Sweet mashed potatoes. I had the bratwurst - the plate came with two sausages. I could not eat the sauer kraut or those horrible sweet mashed potatoes. We also had to pay for the bread. That was a first for me - ordering a meal and paying for the bread. I should have listened to the others and went some place else. If the owner was trained in culinary skills in Germany, I am skeptical. The prices were a bit high for what we got. Next trip to Fredericksburg will find me having lunch at one of the other restaurants which I have visited many times before. read more

If you go there, don't ever try their "Rheinischer Sauerbraten". That dish is a disgrace to its name. I know as I am from the Rhineland in Germany. Sauerbraten has to be marinaded in (mostly) vinegar and spices. The Sauerbraten at Der Lindenbaum has never even been close to a marinade. The sauce they serve is a tad sweet, as it's supposed to be, and also has, correctly, some raisins in it, but it lacks all other spices that should be in it, and, what is worse, doesn't even have a hint of vinegar. To me it looked like a somewhat souped-up sauce from a bag from the local HEB: slightly sweet but otherwise tasteless and bland. Apart from that, herb noodles are not traditionally served with Sauerbraten in the Rhineland. What I also strongly have to complain about: both times I had that pityful dish and let the waiter/waitress know, I would have expected the Chef to turn up.and talk to me. Nope! That, to my mind, means it is a badly run restaurant that doesn't care in the least about their customers. My 2 stars are for the soup only. P.S.: I've tried my hand at Sauerbraten only once, without a recipe, simply copying what I had seen my mother doing, and my Sauerbraten was 50 tmes better than theirs! read more

Our basket of "german bread" was something I could buy at HEB. My $10 glass of wine was meh, as was my husband's beer. We sat down, wanted to order beer...$12 a bottle so no thanks. We had two waters served in plastic cups. No linen napkins. If you are charging almost $17 per dish I expect a little more. Zero ambiance too. Bright lights and strange Spanish instrumental music playing in the background in this German establishment. At some point on a Friday night we were the only couple in the restaurant. We watched people leave when told the place does not accept Visa and Matercard. I was so looking forward to some good German food after not being here for a while. I had the Jager Schnitzel which came with German potato salad and red cabbage. The schnitzel was very good but the mushroom gravy was nothing to write home about, the cabbage was bland and the potato salad was way too sweet with no trace of the vinegar and bacon I was hoping for. Went here on a whim while in town on the recommendation of a girl at one of the boutiques. It is a very cute little restaurant and the service is great. It's very down home and cozy. Our server was super nice, she was patient and friendly. I got one of their soups and it was really good for the cold night that we were having in Texas on a rainy fall night. Though the food ok, the service was petty awful. After taking 15 minutes figure out a table of 6, we finally got to sit down. Our waitress was pretty saucy. She expressed that there was no split checks, even though this is not shown on the door nor the menu. After looking at the wine prices, one member of our group ordered a bottle of wine and was given a glass. When we finally could flag her down to express the error, she blamed fact she couldn't hear, rather than acknowledging not listening charged both the glass and bottle. My GF and I had an early dinner here on a Saturday. They were pretty busy but we were seated quickly. The service was very good, attentive but not hovering. My GF had the jäger schnitzel (wild mushroom and wine sauce), Both she and I really liked it. The main dish came with red cabbage and the chef's choice of potato of the day. I had a Picata schnitzel (sauce of tomatoes, basil, herbs). It was awesome. We both enjoyed each other's dishes. There seemed to be quite a few local people eating there, which we believe is a good sign of a local place. I am not an expert on German food, but I say Der Lindenbaum is a winner! read more

There was an issue at the table near us with an individual who had stepped outside and let his food sit for 20 minutes... he then demanded something different and refused to play for his perfectly fine plate.
