Came on a Friday night after work with co-workers at 6:45PM with about a dozen folks already here. By the time we left at 10:15PM the place was packed and there was a line of about two dozen downstairs to get in. This Hollywood rooftop bar reminds me of new-money, North Dallas, contemporary honkey tonk with a shiny new facelift and ozempic - think modern cowboy-chic. There's great views of the Hollywood sign, Downtown LA and a slight view of the Pacific Ocean. The drinks are priced like you're in Hollywood, so don't be budget conscious. They have a taco cart in the corner - order your food with the bartender and they will give you a ticket for the taco cart. On Fridays, they provide 50-minute line dance instruction every hour with 10 minutes of general line dancing every hour between 7PM - 10PM. The first hour is pretty simple, but the routines become more complex at the evening progresses. Also, this place gets packed - at 7PM there were about 9 of us learning the routines. At 9PM, good luck trying not to run into anyone - the dancefloor was packed. Thankfully there's patio seating and walkways around the packed dance floor, which helped traverse the space by going around. The bartenders smiled at the pretty girls and typically bro-stoic with everyone else. Quick, efficient, but not conversational or "friendly". The bar got pretty impacted once the night got hopping. We were staying at the hotel and decided to check out Desert 5 Spot. The best way I can describe it is Hollywood meets Nashville. Walking in felt like stepping into a bar on Broadway Street in Nashville, complete with live country music, line dancing, and a fun younger crowd. The decor was one of my favorite parts. The space does a great job blending trendy Hollywood with a Nashville honky-tonk vibe. It feels authentic without trying too hard. The rooftop views were great. You get a clear look at Hollywood below. You can see all the action and character of the neighborhood without having to deal with the noise and smells down on the street, which was exactly my kind of view. The live music added a lot to the experience, and it was fun watching people line dance throughout the evening. Since we were staying at the hotel, being able to use the complimentary drink vouchers was a nice bonus. If you're looking for a relaxed rooftop bar with live music, great views, and a unique Hollywood-meets-Nashville atmosphere, Desert 5 Spot is definitely worth checking out. read more

Hard to find parking. Street parking was $1 an hour until 8pm, 2 hour limit. Came during Happy Hour on a weekday. They had 2 for $10 Tacos, $6 Beer & Wine, $9 Cocktails Tuesday to Friday from opening (6pm) to 8pm. It's a rooftop with a closed off area for event. It's was super busy during Happy Hour. Smoking was allowed. Service was hard to get since you only order at the bar. Got the Watermelon Jolene for $9 and Outlaw Tacos for $10. You pay for your tacos at the bar and they give you a ticket for you to redeem at the taco stand. The Watermelon was pretty good with a good amount of liquor. Didn't taste any watermelon though. The tacos had beef, chicken, or mushroom. Got both tacos as beef. Felt the tacos were too salty. Worked just get drinks next time. Will try their beginner Line Dancing next time on Wednesdays and Fridays 7pm, 8pm, or 9pm. read more

Desert 5 Spot is EASILY one of my favorite bars in LA! Yes, the drinks are expensive....but that's Hollywood/a hotel rooftop bar for you...so there's not much you can do about that! The drinks themselves are all GREAT - love the flavor, mixology quality, and the strength of the liquor in them. The bartenders also keep things moving and are friendly/efficient for the most part...something that can be hard to come by in this part of town, often. And of course, the vibes here are immaculate. The views of Hollywood are unbeatable, and there's even a decent amount of spots throughout to actually find somewhere to sit! Then if you wanna dance, there's a great space inside that can get quite lively in the evenings - especially on the weekend! I also love the summer day parties they sometimes through at the pool right next to the bar - also some of the best in Hollywood when it comes to parties! So glad they made a place like this in LA! It's such a fun vibe whether you're a country lover or not! The first time I went I was so taken aback with how beautifully the place was decorated and set up! From the bar to the disco boots, furniture, and outdoor balcony that has sweeping views of the city, everything is stunning! The drinks were really strong and they even had a vendor for tacos! I started coming here for line dancing and I will say the ambiance is fun but the place does have a pretty small space for it. I feel like since they didn't make their dance floor big enough, they may need to move all the couches or something to accommodate that many people. Ok this place is PACKED and the line is out the door, pretty long wait to get in. The drinks were not that strong. But the vibes are fun. I love the outside areas. The live music was fun, I liked the featured singer more than I liked the lead performer (he was kinda all over the place). The random girl who dances on top of a barrel is a choice. The line dancing was fun to watch at first, but then I just wanted to actually dance, and the line dancing was too complicated to just pick up by watching. I was told that they hold dancing sessions on Wednesdays for people to learn the intricate moves and then they get to "perform" on the weekend. Which I guess is fun for the people to show off their moves, but not as fun to just watch over and over. read more

Stole my Party Idea, but I'll get to that later.** As a kid with a father from Texas, Cowboy boots and Country music are close to my heart, I was excited to check this spot out as I could see that a lot of intention went into the overall design... it's a beautiful and well decorated space but it was uncomfortable seeing a glaringly obvious erasure of Black contributions to the genre. The space is supposed to celebrate Country Music and yet it's ONLY putting white artists and photos on the walls. It's leaning HARD into a particular nostalgic aesthetic, which is ok, do what you want with your place but I will say that when that aesthetic is rooted in historically deliberate discrimination...it's hard to not question what they're signaling exactly. The drinks were solid, no complaints there. **Despite my critique above, I had an ok night and I saw potential to expand on its programming. Around the time of Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter release, I spoke with a friend of mine who hosts BIPOC centered parties across LA, I thought this could be the perfect overlap. I was able to get connected with the manager through a friend of a friend and set up a call. We spoke about how it would be a beneficial partnership, a high turnout, day party celebrating and playing the album through...broadening of the bar's audience and adding a new relationship to my friends venue roster. The manager seemed interested and said he'd follow up after checking availability on the calendar. About a week later we heard nothing and then my friend sent me a post from their instagram advertising their own Cowboy Carter party. Cutting us out. The erasure continuing. I've sat on this for a while bc I don't tend to be a disrupter but it always rubbed me the wrong way that they just got away with stealing from us and so I'm just getting it off my chest I suppose. read more

There is a line out front, but if you are staying at the the hotel, skip the line. Staying at the Volume Tribute Hotel and this rooftop bar is part of the Hotel Group. We saw this ad outside the door for Frontier Fridays - Tacos 2 for $6 and thought we would give it a try. To get the tacos, you buy tickets from the bar - each ticket gets you 2 tacos. Sounds simple enough. I ordered two tickets, and the check is for $21.95. When the bartender finally came back around, I mentioned that tacos should have been 2 for $6. He asked "what makes you think that?" I said, the sign by the entrance door. He said - "nope - not our sign - probably someone else's". I disagreed with him and he again pushed back "we don't have a special - they aren't that price." So I had him void the check and left. On my way out, I took a pic of the advertising card, and the bouncer at the door confirmed they were on special.
