During this Covid pandemic, I've been eating more things that make me happy, Ice cream, alcohol, chips, ect. So today i stopped by and got a dozen donuts from my favorite donut shop. Yes Devils Dozen is still open! When i pulled up i though it was hilarious that one of the devils on the wall was wearing gloves and a mask! LOL, thats just the kind of humor that this establishment has! I forget all the flavors i had i think i got a few vanilla, dark chocolate, old fashioned, coconut chai and pistachio horchata? Something like that. They were all outstanding! They were a hit at the office, i know because they were gone in less than hours, usually if someone brings in a dozen, there are still leftovers after lunch. I really liked the old fashioned, the vanilla and the one with the pistachio, but most of all its just the consistency and density of the donuts, they are light but doughy. The dark chocolate was too dark for me. That sounds weird, i know, but you have to be a real dark chocolate lover to like this one, i guess i prefer milk chocolate. Overall still my favorite donut shop in SD or anywhere, i like their whimsical design, its so fitting because they are Devilishly good! I also found out that they are owned by the group that runs Kettner Exchange, The Grass Skirt, Good Time Poke shop, Firehouse, Vin De Syrah, and The Waverly. So Devils Dozen makes my favorite donuts, Good time Poke makes my favorite poke.... Guess i need to try these other restaurants! One little hiccup, my friend bought me a gift card because they knew it was my favorite donut shop, somehow it didn't register. So i had to pay out of pocket. The employee took a pic and said they would show it to the manager when they got in, and that other people have had problems recently too.. I hope it works next time, maybe they should keep a written record or after someone purchases it, swipe it to see if it works and if theres cash on it. Or maybe the cards just demagnetize IDK.. Devil's Dozen had mastered the donut craft. Don't be deterred by the long line and even longer wait times, it's definitely worth it for that bite. They could definitely increase efficiency as the person ringing up orders is also preparing the donuts and coffee (if someone in front of you orders a coffee, add a few minutes to that wait time) but we still went way too many times during our time in Little Italy. I've tried a variety of their special flavors but ultimately, it doesn't get any better than their vanilla bean glazed (except for the vanilla glazed donut holes). They do have an upstairs area that is occasionally open for eating and has a nice view of the bay. read more

Honestly, it's a must. Every time I get a little donut craving, I drive over here because 1. The donuts leave me speechless (literally clouds of heaven. They fluff back up after a bite). 2. The drinks always hit the spot (matcha and coffee, both amazing. Get the house made cinnamon syrup). 3. THE SERVICE. Everyone is so kind and I honestly always leave with a little smile on my face. I stopped in this morning at around 8:30 and there was not many donuts the girl was stressed out at the counter and said she didn't have time to make anymore so I decided to get two old fashioned donuts that said were $3 each when she rang me up it was 736 I said what is the $36 difference and she said it was attacked on katner exchange thing that she couldn't do anything about first of all I didn't ask her to do anything about it. Second of all I'm not paying $1.36 in taxes because of the Kettner exchange policy. They can go fck themselves it's bad enough I have to pay the IRS. Waited for 30 minutes after opening as they were running late. The glazes/toppings were all so sweet they seemed flavorless except the chocolate. The dulce de leche was sickeningly sweet. The dough was not light but doughy and chewy. Sorry, but folding dough upon itself is NOT lamination just because the term is coined by a blogger. Lamination involves a layer like a butter block or sugar (Kouign Amann) to create layers. The folding you do with the dough does nothing to enhance the structure. I'm rarely in Little Italy before this place sells out of its daily quota of donuts. Since we had just finished eating breakfast across the street, it was the perfect opportunity to make a visit. As a bonus, the curbside parking was free because it was so early in the morning, and the meters were not awake yet. My friend mentioned that you can park in the spaces behind the building which are normally reserved for valet use at Kettner Exchange in the evening hours. They have a pretty simple set up with a service window to order donuts and/or coffee, tea if you don't want to go inside and sit on the upstairs deck. There were about seven different varieties of donuts and a few types of donut holes for sale. Pricing for the basics was quite reasonable (Vanilla Bean, Chocolate Glazed - $2 each; Old Fashioned - $3). I picked two of their fancier styles, Caramel Crunch ($3) and Guava Cream Cheese ($3.50). I would have to say the quality of the dough was one of the best in town. I don't know if it's the kind of yeast they use, but the donuts were so light and flavorful. My one nitpick is that I wish they offered a larger selection, maybe at least a dozen choices to match the word 'dozen' in their business name. Love this gem!! Their aesthetic is really unique and is different than any other donut shop I've been to. Every time I come, they always have really good flavors on display and their menu isn't overwhelming. Their dough is suuuuper fluffy! During the covid19 pandemic we have tried to explore all the open donut shops in San Diego. This one is a favorite of ours. Located in little Italy Devils dozen is just a storefront offering walk up service. During normal times this place sells out on a regular basis and you have to get there before the donuts are gone. Donuts re high quality. Like the sugar coated donut holes. Also the vanilla bean is one of the best I've had in san diego. The fruit donuts are okay (blueberry is my favorite). The chocolate donuts are nice as well. The tres leche is just weird. Coffee here is okay as well. Not the best I've had, but better than starbucks. Overall, a nice place for donuts when you have a craving for the basics. read more

3.5. We loved this place the first time we tried it. The donuts are so soft and we love their different flavors. I love that they categorize the types of donuts which make it easy for us to choose. The layout of the store is also nice with a rooftop sitting area that I have yet to check. Came back a few months after on a Sunday morning and the line was insane! It took us 45 mins to get our orders in. They don't really streamline the process so for each person ordering donuts with coffee, they're going to finish the coffees first before proceeding to the next customer. It's in the middle of downtown in a touristy area so would be nice if they have a quicker pace. By the time I got to place my order, most flavors are already gone and they have no intention of replenishing it even if it was so early still. The first time was a charm but the second time became meh. Not sure if I'll give it a third chance. read more

Visited Devil's Dozen on a Sunday morning and enjoyed it. The shop opens at 8am on Sundays and we arrived about 15 minutes early, joining a line of about 5 other groups ahead of us. They only had one person working the register/boxing the donuts/making the drinks, so you have to be prepared to wait. I'm not the most patient, so it was admittedly a struggle. I would say it was about 40 minutes total from the time we got in line to the time was walked away with our donuts. A really long line had accumulated behind us in that time. They had a lot of fun options to choose from and everything looked SO good in the window display. I'm typically a maple/caramel girl so I went with a browned butter donut (yum) and snagged some of the lemon poppyseeds because they were gorgeous. All in all I would say yummy donuts and so beautiful but I don't know if I'd wait like 40mins again for them. If you're having a slow moving morning and have som time on your hands, go for it! Great donut spot! They have classic old fashioned donuts and classic regular donuts (chocolate, maple, glaze etc.). Then they have the creative ones! Today they had caramel apple, tres leches and lemon poppyseed just to name a few. One tip is to get there early and with a cushion on whatever time you need for where you're going after. The line is long and slow. There was one person working and she was doing great, but when someone ahead of you orders 6 different kinds of lattes and two dozen donuts, it takes a while for one person to fulfill that order. read more

I couldn't help myself but I took a bite of the gluten free tangerine donut first. So so good! They asked to box it separately but I'm not allergic and just wanted to try it. The maple bacon is delicious as well! I'm saving the other two for later. I also got an iced lavender lemon tyme oat milk latte and it did not disappoint! Perfectly sweet but not too sweet, the herbs not overpowering the coffee and a great compliment to the donuts. They have a cute little seating area up top with a view of the wafer front in the distance. The cashier was so kind and sweet. It's always a wait but always worth it! This is one of our favorite places to stop by on a slow Saturday morning. They get bonus points for offering gluten free donuts. I recommend arriving early (before 9) on Saturday's or you risk showing up to a closed business. Once they sell out they close for the day. Parking can be tough, but it's great to grab a donut and walk to the farmers market. read more

We were in SD for the weekend and our friend suggested Devil's Dozen for a morning coffee and donut so we strolled over to give it a shot. Tip: come early as they sell out pretty quickly. Unfortunately for us, we came later in the morning and there weren't many donuts left. We did, however, try the chocolate old fashioned, nutella, and vanilla sprinkles - because that's all that was left (in addition to a small pile of donut holes)! Maybe it was because it was later in the morning, but the nutella donut was pretty dry. The chocolate old fashioned was a bit moister, but not fantastic. Both were cake style donuts and pretty dense. The vanilla sprinkles was a yeast donut, but was just meh. Would definitely give Devil's Dozen another shot - perhaps getting there earlier for fresher donuts and a better selection will make for a better experience. read more

Definitely not the best donuts I've ever had, but they are really good quality. I was waiting in line 10 minutes before it opened (that's right, the line starts early) and got a dozen donuts. The staff was very friendly, but it took a very long time to get all of my donuts and coffee. My biggest complaint is the chocolate frosting. It's super heavy, almost dark chocolate tasting and it wasn't super sweet at all. The donut itself was great quality but the frosting left a lot to be desired. Covid 19 Another day another donut box for work. My boss brought these and boasted about how much she spent on them. All I can say was that I cut into a chocolate donut and wasn't impressed by the doughy elasticity that made it difficult to pierce. You know when pizza isn't cut all the way through and you're forced to inadvertently touch other slices? It's kind of like that. Why didn't I eat a whole donut? Because I'm trying to respect my pancreas, kidneys, metabolism, and etc. especially considering that I only have coffee before noon. Once the donuts are all sold - they are closed for the day! Pretty much out of luck if you were wanting a devil donut. I can see why though. Donut connoisseurs flock here to feed their sweet tooth and the line fills fast with people ordering for themselves, office mates, family and friends. We were lucky enough to get here early enough during an early morning stroll through Little Italy. Grabbed a chocolate mocha, maple bacon, old fashioned and matcha flavored donuts. There were all quite delicious!! After feasting on a few bites of each, my daughter and I concluded that we needed to buy some more to take home but realized the line was already 5 people deep with more walking towards the small shop. After a little wait we were able to quickly purchase our goodies to take home. The donuts were the perfect consistency (IMHO). Chewy but not "doughy," and some were crispy and light without a hint of greasiness. Some donuts don't hold well after a day but these were still edible the following morning (although I'm surprised we didn't gobble them up as a "midnight" snack. Street parking available and a few seats at the rooftop and at the storefront. Other than that...get it while they are open because once they run out - they close up shop. read more
