We love coming to this restaurant, for both the variety of available dishes and the delicious quality of most of them. In the most positive way, this place is the classical "hole in the wall". It's exterior and available parking is not it's strong point, but that is easily compensated for by the number of well seasoned (not too salty) entrees which focus on Northern Chinese cuisine. The portions are generous; the service is decent in light of the minimal staffing, and the dishes ordered arrive at the table quickly and fresh from the chef(s). The Pepper Salted Pomfret is one of our favorites, with it's very mild tender white meat combined with it's crispy skin, fins and many of the smaller bones. I like the Taiwanese Intestine Casserole, but it's definitely an acquired taste which may not appeal to everyone. So dew drop inn specializes in northern Chinese cuisine. Menu items are a little different than that you get at your typical Chinese eatery. Here, you have to get their shao bing pockets, pork buns, spicy wontons, and green beans! Also, when I'm in the mood for it, their pork ribs remind me of wang chung's 5 spice chicken. Yum. Oh! Just ate here an hour ago. And it was great. We went on a Tuesday during the beginning of Chinese New Year and it took a while to get our food but it was delicious. We got the fried rice, soup dumpling, another kind of dumpling, and garlic choy sum. Overall the workers are nice and the portions are good considering the price. Fantastic experience getting take out from Dew Drop Inn. We tried several dishes: pan-fried potsticker with shrimp and pork (#2), spicy sauce dumpling with chicken and chive (#7), green onion pancake (#8), Shanghai pork meat buns (#16), steamed shrimp and tofu with ginger onion sauce (#30), garlic string beans (#70), and shao bing sesame pockets with pork and tofu (#79). We ordered everything over the phone, and then drove out to the restaurant to pick everything up. We brought everything back to the house... about a 20 minute drive, and all items travelled well and everything was warm and delicious after unboxing. Seriously, everything was delicious, flavors balanced, the green beans were so crisp and bright, they tasted fresh. Among the items that stand out to me were the pan-fried potsticker with shrimp and pork. You could easily see a big piece shrimp inside the wrapper, and it was cooked perfectly. Also the shao bing sesame pocket with pork and tofu... beyond delicious. The sesame pocket itself, flaky, and light, but strong enough to hold a lot of filling. And that filling... ohhhhh man. Flavorful bits of pork and tofu, perfectly flavored. Sweet and savory, but not too overpowering. I want that filling on rice, with a fried egg, or just in everything forever. We only tried the beef noodle soup and chicken and chive potsticker. The soup was very flavorful but A little salty for us. The beef was very tender and the vegetables were very good. The potsticker was cooked just right but for my friend and I it was much too salty. If you like things more on the salty side this would be perfect for you but if you don't like a whole lot of salt you may want to avoid this dish. The place is small and popular. When I want comfort Chinese food, this is where I go. Everything from the dumplings to the soups to the main dishes are good. It's not a big venue and it is often busy. Tonight we only had to wait 10 minutes. We didn't want a heavy meal and had potstickers and egg drop seaweed soup. It left us happy and satisfied. Been meaning to check this place out, came on a Wednesday night and at first it didn't look too busy but soon enough all the tables were filled! I was surprised to walk in a see on the menu this is northern Chinese cuisine - it felt like a home coming! The service was great - seated immediately, water and tea served right away. But what really won me over was the food. This place did not disappoint. We have been looking all over for the soupy dumplings "Xiao long bao". This has been surprisingly difficult in HI. We immediately knew we wanted to give it a try. It come out hot, on the steamer with red wine vinegar and ginger. While I loved the vinegar combo, I've definitely had better. This wasn't exactly my favorite dish we've had - so unfortunately the hunt continues for Xiao long bao. Now the surprise of the night - the tofu skins! Soft tofu skin on the outside serviced with soft noodles on the inside on top of a bed of steamed greens - this is a vegetarians dream but it's packed with flavor!!! This is going to become a regular for us - both my husband and I loved this dish! And we typically don't like vegetarian dishes. This is a must try! We also had the beef noodle soup with perfectly cooked noodles - this was another great dish. All in all, a solid 4.5 star food experience. Parking is a small lot on the side which we were able to score a spot. Otherwise it's off street. The bathroom situation is interesting - you have to walk thru the kitchen to get to the bathroom. No? Well, I have. Many times. But we'll come back to this. I have driven past Dew Drop Inn roughly five billion times. Yet, I had not eaten food from here until last Saturday. And then we ate it again yesterday just to, ya know, make sure. Make sure of what? POOF! Boooooongggggggggggg! (That was the sound of a gong and confetti, yo) DEW DROP INN IS NOW THE MOST FAVORED OF ALL CHINESE RESTAURANTS IN HAWAII BY THE RENOWN YOUNG CLAN. And it was said. Have you witnessed with thine eyes all of the reviews raving about the pork sesame pockets? They are right. The reviews mentioning the mysteriously delicious bean curd skin with choy sum? Also right. The salivating foodies posting glorious remembrances of that which is garlic string beans? So incredibly, beautifully RIGHT. We have also enjoyed the hot and sour soup as well as the szechuan eggplant. Neither are as bursting with flavor as some of their competitors in other, msg and sugar laden establishments. BUT the flavors are wonderful--clean, delicate, and delicious. I didn't care for the eggplant at first as it lacks the dark, sticky sweetness I have become accustomed to, but the more I ate it the more enjoyed it and now I crave it almost constantly so that's... annoying. But good. PLUS. No Chinese food hangover. I did not have to recover on the couch for two hours post meal. I did not have to drink several gallons of water to quench the persistent msg thirst. I did not glance down at our leftovers and feel a vague wave of nausea sweep over me. In fact, I put our leftovers away downright giddy that I would be able to eat them the next day. I will admit that both times we ordered take-out because that is what people do when they have intentionally or unintentionally produced or acquired a number of cannot-yet-be-abandoned-by-themselves-at-home children. So I don't know what the service is like, but I DO know that whoever answered the phone was polite, patient, and spoke perfect English. It was a JOY. I was, however, really disappointed with their lack of General Tso's chicken and crab rangoon. I KID. Oh Lord, I kid. If you want some amazing Chinese food that will leave you alive and peppy, this is the place for you. Dew Drop Inn is MY happy place. As in: "I'm in my happy place and Im not mad at the world anymore!" One time many years ago on a flight back to HNL from the mainland, I met some nice ladies who were going on vacation in Hawaii together. Once they learned that I lived there, they asked for some suggestions on things to see and do on Oahu. So I gave them a list of my personal favorite things. Things no tourists would ever find. The only dining suggestion on the list was the Dew Drop Inn. I later got a note from one of these ladies thanking me for the list of things to see. She said they especially enjoyed the little adventure of going to the Dew Drop Inn. I had told them to take a taxi from Waikiki. A highlight of their vacation because it was so unique and exotic for them. My history with the Dew Drop goes back many years. We used to live in the Makiki area and were able to walk to this quaint little hole in the wall from our apartment. Twice cooked pork was the dish I would always order in those days. The menu is in photo albums with pictures of what you are going to get. That's kind of fun. There are a number of items that are vegetarian/meatless and they serve brown rice on request. Their Sesame Pockets are unique. Mongolian beef was very nice. Kung Pao shrimp and choy sum with black mushrooms are full of flavor. I haven't tried a wide variety of their menu items. I stick with what I like. Like I said this is more home style cooking. More simple flavor than at a high priced restaurant. Mostly Chinese patrons. That is a recommendation in itself. Ask the owner what is good. Ask the people at the table next to you what they are having. I am sure you can find something that you will love. Limited street parking. Limited parking in the tiny lot to the left of the store. If Auntie Pasta's is busy you might have to park a little farther away. There is a guard in the Safeway lot. read more

They had me at "Do Drop In." Back in my small kid days in upper New York State the local Dew Drop Inn back there was a seedy dive that I was never allowed to enter but had an exotic lure of mystery and welcome (adults only). Finding a (much nicer and family friendly) Dew Drop Inn in Hawaii made me instantly affectionate about this place. I first ate here with a local Chinese-heritage friend and she ordered the Xiao Long Bao/ Soup Dumplings and gave me the important instructions that you do not cut this dumpling in half before you put it in your mouth. The whole point of it is that it contains a broth inside the wrapper so you need to put the whole dumpling in your mouth THEN chew so the broth floods your mouth instead of your plate. Sure enough, DELICIOUS. Everything I've had here is tasty and affordable. It's a small dining room so if you want to eat at a typical time I would suggest a reservation. However I've never had a problem showing up when they first open and finding an available table. Service is always friendly and efficient. My last visit here there was one large table with Chinese family exclaiming loudly as the server brought successive rounds of dishes. Lots of ooh-ing and aah-ing. I wished I was eating with them. Another nearby table (single woman) picked up her phone, dialed a number, and whispered "I'm ready for my check." I guess she called the back of the house to tell them she was ready to go. Left-over containers promptly appeared. It was kind of James Bond-ish in it's quiet discretion ---instead of waving the waitress down ----so I enjoyed her also. read more

Dew Drop Inn is located on the right side (mauka side) of S Beretania St. It's a small, hole-in-the-wall spot, so it's easy to miss if you aren't paying attention. Parking is a fail like at most places on the island... So if you park in the tiny lot next to the restaurant, make sure you're safe when you exit, as you'll have to back into Beretania. If you're not down with the risky biz, try finding street parking. Good luck. As recommended by our server, we tried the following: SPICY SAUCE DUMPLING - CHICKEN & CHIVE (8PCS) $7.95 Juicy chicken and chive filled dumplings in a "spicy" not-so-spicy soy-based sauce. I definitely threw on some chili sauce for that kick that I love so much. With a bit of the chili sauce, it was perfect. I really liked the consistency of the dumpling itself -- soft, but not too soft; it definitely kept its form and held the filling without any problem. ONG CHOY WITH SATAY (LAMB) $13.95 Another option is with beef, but I'm a die-hard lamb fan, so lamb it was! And what a great choice! The lamb was delicately cooked, so it was just the right consistency -- not tough or chewy, but cooked throughout. And there was still essence of that wonderful lamb flavor that I love. The ong choy was still crisp enough and was bright in color. Nicely done! GROUND PORK & TOFU W/ SESAME BREAD (4 POCKETS) $12.95 A delicious and fun dish. This dish consists of a sautéed ground pork and tofu mixture and 4 sesame bread pockets. Basically, you just fill the pockets with the pork-tofu mixture and chow down. The bread is absolutely amazing! It's the perfect kind of chewy and it really complements the pork mixture well. I think this was my favorite dish of the night. I don't think I've had this kind of dish at any other Chinese restaurant. And you bet I'll be having this the next time I dine here. SHRIMP IN TOMATO SAUCE (SPICY) $12.95 I did not sense any spiciness, but this was still really quite good. I think it was probably my second favorite dish, next to the pork & tofu pockets. The name of this dish isn't really a great description, but it is a shrimp dish...with some kind of tomato-based sweet-sour-spicy sauce. Not sure what they put in the sauce, but it was magical. I found myself dipping some of the ong choy in it. :) VERDICT Why the 5 stars? I really feel that Dew Drop Inn serves up unique and tasty food that I have not had before. Q: How do you know when you are in an authentic Chinese restaurant? A: When you have to point a pictures of the food on the menu because your waitress speaks only Mandarin. Please, do drop in.... Onion pancakes. You'll never go back to Bisquick Fried rice with everything. You'll still never go back to Bisquick Mushu Pork. Served with little thinner pancakes like a chinese burrito with hoisin sauce. You can substitute shrimp even though its off the menu. Bisquick, never again. I've been passing this restaurant for years thinking that I should try this place out. I finally scheduled a foodie night and made reservations 2 weeks in advance. It was hot and cramped but boy was the food good! First thing you notice is how busy this hole in the wall is with people constantly peeking in to see if there is an open table. There were about a dozen people waiting to be seated when we left at 8:00. The food was amazing. We started off with the pork buns which was like the Japanese nikuman. The cold ginger chicken was pretty good and the spicy shrimp sizzling platter was very tasty and perfectly cooked. My favorite dish was the spicy eggplant because the eggplant was just firm enough and sweet. We also had the sesame bread with the spicy pork, amazing dish. My least favorite dish was the soup dumplings because the inside was not hot enough and the didn't seem to be enough broth. All in all a very delicious and affordable dinner. My go-to spot for soup dumplings. They're not as soupy as the ones I've had in NYC, but the flavor is there. Other favorites are their sweet and sour pork, house fried rice, and all their other dumplings. Actually everything. Everything I tried there has yet to disappoint. They haven't opened up yet for sit down meals, that I know of, but ordering takeout is a very easy and seamless process. Only a few tables available and was always busy when they did dine in. They still are busy since picking up my take out either someone is ahead or behind me for pick up as well. My only gripe is the parking. They have a very small lot next to the restaurant and it can be a bit scary coming out of it since you are coming right onto a very busy South Beratania street. Their food is worth getting into an accident though (as long as no one is hurt) and I mean, that's why you have car insurance right. Sorry I have no photos to share. With all the times I've eaten there, you'd think my phone would be full of them. Once your meal is in front of you though, all thoughts of conversation/food shots are out the door. Came here for lunch to pay off a bet for lunch. A small restaurant with about 8 tables... After reading much reviews, I ordered the sesame pita w/ chicken--not sure what the name of the dish is called... I wasn't feeling it. Didn't find anything special with it but it still tasted pretty good. We also ordered the black bean fish. It tasted very good, very flavorful. My friend wonders if it contained MSG as he felt itchy afterwards (he gets itchy from MSG). I felt no ill effects and didn't care less if it had MSG. The service was good considering it was a one woman show outside and she was very polite. When we were done eating, our tab came with candy. Nice touch following a filling meal. Although I was not overly enthusiastic with my stuffed pita order, overall our meal tasted very good, and I would come here again. I fell in love with Dew Drop in 5 years ago and the romance has never died! There is a huge variety of entrees to choose from and I am never disappointed! Sizzling Garlic Shrimp, Garlic Green Beans, Crispy Duck, Shanghai Noodles AND the Dumplings - HEAVEN. The make everything fresh to order and it comes to your table pipping hot (You do have to wait a bit during the dinner service due to this - but it is worth the wait). No MSG in this joint and while the dining area is small you usually dont have a problem getting a table. I truly believe their cook just lives in that kitchen 24-7 - it really isn't that big - but that little guy cooks his heart out. Parking is the only problem - if you can't find a space in the lot next door you need to park on the street. At night after 6Pm it is not so bad, but for lunch it is metered parking across the street right after McDonalds that you should look for. If you don;t know what to pick - no problem they have menus that have just the pictures so you flip through and pick what you think makes your mouth water!! Kind of like on off line version of Yelp! If you have never been here - you must go at least once - you will remember the food for days! This place was so awesome! So why the two stars? Well, I'm torn, let me explain. Firstly, it's kinda a hole in the wall, which I personally like, but I think it's dirtiness was a bit too intense for my taste. A small photo album with actual photographs of each dish, the menu was amazing. They even specify which meat the photo section is in with cute hand drawn pictures and arrows. The food was the BEST, like SO GOOD! Everything was delicious! It totally exceeded my expectations. So what's the problem? There was way too much crazy going on in there, and coupled with the dirtiness, I doubt I'll be back. There was a guy (maybe one of the owners) with a bird sitting on his back, and it kept sh**ing down his shirt. So gross. Then there was an insane woman who seems to be a local fixture, walking around the place and saying creepy crazy stuff. Lastly, all the plates and cups were super dirty. For desert, we got some mochi, but the spoons they brought out, had so much food caked on them, it was like a joke. Ugh, such a delicious dinner but with such a terrible aftertaste. This small little place requires reservations otherwise you may end up waiting outside on the bench. BYOB! Yes! Small little mom-and-pop place with really good dumplings. Any of their dumplings -either the steamed or fried are good. Can't stop popping them into your mouth! From Auntie Pasto's dining room, I've been looking at and wondering about the Dew Drop Inn for years. It isn't much to look at from across the street but it always seemed to be busy. Well, today I was tasked with the mission of brining home lunch. And since I was in the neighborhood, I decided to satisfy my curiosity about the Dew Drop Inn. Similar to Dr. Who's TARDIS , what you find inside is not what you would expect from seeing the outside. It looks pretty much like a dingy hole-in-the-wall from the outside; but inside, you find a clean, quaint, and quirky dining room. It was a very pleasant place to sit and relax while they prepared my take-out. The service was very friendly. The nice lady who took my order was full of smiles and recommendations. It appeared to me that those folks who were dining in were getting all the service and attention they wanted. If my lovely wife wasn't hungry at home, I'd have gladly joined them. I settled on the Hot and Sour Soup with Noodles, the Szechwan Shredded Chicken, and a dish not on the menu that they were nice enough to make for me: stir fried choy sum with black mushrooms and chicken. When I got home, all three dishes were still steaming hot. I wouldn't tell my wife where it came from before she had tried and passed judgment on all three dishes. We both liked all of them. The noodles were in a separate container and we added them to the soup as we served it. This kept them from becoming mushy. Neither of us had ever had noodles in our hot and sour soup. We both agreed it was really good. The Szechwan chicken was very tasty. It was spicy but not overly so. The dish of my own creation seemed plain in comparison to the other two, but it was exactly what I had asked for. When I told my wife where the food was from, she smiled a big smile and exclaimed, "Wow! We finally tried it." The value was good too. We were both very hungry, and for $30, we got so much food we didn't eat half of it. I bet the leftovers will feed all three of us dinner tonight. I look forward to my next trip to the Dew Drop Inn. So after you get over the name of this restaurant (teehee you all know that you giggled) you'll start wishing that this place was 24 hours so you could have their amazing food any time. A friend took us here the other night saying that she could not stop eating here and now I know why. This is a small restaurant, luckily they have chairs for waiting. When we were seated I let my friend just order whatever putting my full trust in her. She ordered the spicy dumplings, chicken & chive dumplings, potstickers, fried chicken, steamed & fried buns and Shanghai Meat Buns. All of the food came out pretty fast, especially for the quality. Perfect for me because I was STARVING. These dumplings and potstickers are amazing. The right amount of flavor, it doesn't fall apart when you pick it up, it's just perfection which is why I've been craving it for the past few days. And HOLY SHIT don't get me started on the fried chicken! Eat this with the steamed/fried buns and you're shutting your eyes and going to sleep already. The Shanghai Meat Buns were a nice finish to this amazing meal. In the middle is a very delicious meat surprise. BYOB! Or in this case bring your own whiskey which we did. Really good mom and pop styled restaurant if you're looking for northern Chinese food. Loved the bean curd with choy sum, the fried fish fillet, and the orange chicken (which is obviously so much better than panda's). The workers were super nice, the portion sizes are big, and the atmosphere was great. read more
