Went to dickies to get some barbecue for a kickback Saturday when arriving at the restaurant on Laguna Boulevard customer service was horrible we stood in the restaurant for over 10 minutes and the only words that were spoken to earth was that they would be with us in a few minutes after waiting an additional six minutes we decided to leave the establishment. Mind you there was one employee helping a customer at the register one employee party cutting meat and another employee just walking around in the back poor customer service is an understatement will not be going back to this restaurant. read more

I confess. I do eat ribs occasionally. And only at Dickey's. Best ribs and sides in town. I cannot overstate the importance of good sides. BBQ joints either have good ribs and barfy sides or good sides and barfy ribs. Soft serve is a lovely finish to any meal. I took an old friend of mine to lunch. She wanted to try Dickey's in Elk Grove, so off we went. I had previously written a highly critical review of Dickey's in another location. Jared, the owner, responded to my review. After a discussion, he invited me to try another location, to see if it made a difference. He graciously comped me our meals for doing so. I am so glad he did. From the minute we walked in the difference was very obvious. Clean, orderly and very welcoming. The staff took took our orders after listening carefully to make certain we got what we wanted. My friend had the 2 meat plate, while i chose the 3 meat plate. I had brisket, ribs and chicken. With a side of beans and on their recommendation, the cheddar mashed potatoes. It was delicious! The ribs were so well seasoned i forgot my sauce! Full of flavour and falling off the bone tender. The brisket was the same. No tough gristle anywhere. The sliced chicken was moist and full flavoured. Even the sides were good. The cheddar mash surprised me. I'm not a fan of cheddar in anything. But it worked well in this dish. All in all, Dickey's got 5 stars from me. Not because it was comped. But because it honestly was excellent. Believe me, this girl has walked out on a comped meal or 10. What this taught me was, if a place is a chain, if one location is not up to par, try another before writing them off. Thanks to Jared , I found a BBQ place I really love. I hope the other location steps up to the plate. If it does, I will amend my highly critical review, to reflect this. I've been to this restaurant multiple times and the service has always been fine, however I went in and the service I received from Bianca was exceptional! So much so I wanted to share this review! She was so friendly from the start! I am not an easy customer when it comes to food, I'm indecisive and change my mind in the middle of ordering often. 2 stars total: 1 star for really messing up the order that was submitted online. 4 stars for food. For the online order, a print out of exactly what we ordered was included with the food we picked up but there were several missing items. We ordered 7 meals online with 7 additional sauces ($1 each). 2 of the sauces spilled because the lids were not on all the way. The sauce got all over the other containers, which was a mess. We also only received 6 sets of utensils when we ordered 7 meals. Several sides were also missing so the people we got the food for had to share their sides. On top of that, a 20% tip automatically charged. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to leave a good tip but whoever packed the food really messed up and he/she/they didn't deserve a 20% tip. Although, I'd give the food 4 stars, the overall experience plays a big roll in whether I'd recommend the business to others. If you end up trying this place, consider going in person and/or double checking what they packed for you to ensure you get what you ordered. Wow... absolutely disgusting. 0 stars for the service and food. My sister and I came in today to order take out. The girl who helped us was giving us attitude. We ordered 4 of the $6 westerners and she asked us if we wanted pickles and onions. I asked if she can put it on the side, she immediately already gave a look like it was too much trouble for her. Another female worker walked out of the kitchen (assuming she is the cashier) and she told her what we ordered and she also threw in "they asked for pickles and onions on the side" while rolling her eyes. We came home to find no pickles or onions at all in the sandwich or on the side. The sandwich is horrible. The meat is very dry, we used up all the bbq sauce and it was still dry. You can tell the meat is not fresh at all, like they have microwaved it. SUCH A DISAPPOINTMENT. DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!!!!! I try to support businesses during this difficult time... however... Unlike another location I have tried this one was definitely better, the customer service was amazing! They took the time to explain everything to my coworkers making it easy to order... Although some said the brisket was dry mine was not. It was actually the opposite! The balance was perfect and our sides were delicious... Will definitely be back.. The last 3 times we had went to this location, my wife and I had some mixed feelings about it.. I had posted a review on here about a week ago regarding those examples with a one star review. The next day I was contacted by 3 people of management staff, including the General Manager Jaime. I was offered a chance to come back and give them another try, and they promised I would have a better experience, along with a meal for my wife and I on them, at 100% no cost to me. I decided to walk in there and give it a shot, and I have to say it changed my way of thinking about this place, and made up for all 3 experiences I may have had mixed feelings about. I was greeted and walked over to the menu and told about what was what. The order was made within 5 minutes.. Prior to me exiting the store my whole order was verified, and gone over. In the last review, I had talked about the ribs I wasnt crazy about when I had them a couple years ago. We decided to try them again (WITH NO BBQ SAUCE) and they were the booooomb! I also decided to try the chicken, and to cook chicken breast as moist as that, is difficult. The coleslaw was great, and the biscuits were awesome. My mom who had never had Dickey's bbq was raving about the ribs the whole night. But besides the food, the main thing that I can say about today, was that they really showed the courage to step up to the plate to take constructive criticism and make things right. NOT for good reviews on Yelp, but for overall customer service for Dickey's period. And thats huge. If customer service didnt mean anything to them, 3 people wouldnt have contacted me about it. I went here on the first day and got some free pulled pork bbq sandwiches. My husband and I love the bbq here. The Texas Style Chopped Beef Brisket, the Southern Pulled Pork, and the Pork Ribs are excellent. My husband grew up eating bbq and he absolutely loves the bbq at this place. It's all about the sauce. Their bbq sauce comes in regular and spicy. Don't forget to ask for some extra bbq sauce (its free) on the side! I liked it so much I bought an extra bottle to take home! We like getting the 2 Meat Plate which comes with 2 meats, 2 sides, and a roll for $10.95. The Picnic Pack is also a great option if you want to serve 3 or 4 people or if you're a couple that doesn't mind having some yummy leftovers. It's $24.95 and comes with 1 lb meat (they will let you do half a lb of one thing and half a lb of another), 2 medium sides, 2 rolls, and bbq sauce. I will say I was slightly disappointed by the mac and cheese. But to be fair, my husband makes a really good homemade mac and cheese with high quality Italian cheeses and bacon so its a little hard to compare. I liked the bbq beans and the potato salad. We also tried the pecan pie and it was excellent. The pecan pieces had that sugary buttery taste. The prices are reasonable, the food is excellent quality, and the customer service is stellar. You really rarely see good customer service like this anymore. Not to mention, you can get free soft serve ice cream there! They have a little machine and you can serve yourself and get all you want. And kids eat free here on Sundays! This is definitely a great addition to the Elk Grove area and I can tell you that my husband and I are already regulars. Go check out Dickey's! Oh.My.God. that was good. You know how most places have at least one item on your plate that's kind of a throwaway? Something that was an afterthought and not too well done? Not here. Everything was delicious. Even the biscuit, which was home cooked buttery yum. The meats (I had the ribs and pork) was moist and the bbq sauce perfection. This Dickey's been opened for several years now and we've never been here even though we live only about 5 minutes from this location. I read the reviews here before hand and still decided to give it a try because I don't think it's fair not to give a restaurant at least one try even if the most recent reviews are less than stellar. As I was searching for this location's yelp page, I found this page and it's interesting to note that across almost all (all but the Rocklin location, and I understand these are all franchises), http://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=Dickey%27s+Barbecue+Pit, all of them had only about 3 to 3.5 stars or less. Anyhow, we came on a Sunday evening and the place was not busy, there were several small groups, so at least we didn't have to wait too long. I was pretty surprised by the prices. They're pretty high. The rib plate is $15 and it's about 6 ribs and a couple of sides, no drinks, a small roll and a little bit of onion and pickles on the side. That's on the high side considering that this place is cafeteria style, you serve yourself and order from the front counter and there's no wait staff. You can do pretty well at a restaurant at $15 a person on average. Anyhow, we ordered one rib plate and one Western sandwich plate (we were going to just order the Western sandwich but we were told it has to be a plate ($4 extra) to qualify for a kid's meal free). We got 2 free kids' meals with the 2 adults plates. Total came out to about $31. So the 2 kids' meals we got (1 chicken sandwich and 1 turkey sandwich) for free saved us $6.95+tax, so our total would've been closer to $45, that's pretty steep for 2 adults and 2 kids (I did help my 1 year old eat quite a bit of his meal since he's not quite there yet but he is a child under 10? or whatever age to get a free kid's meal on Sundays only). My older kid - 3 year old, LOVED the free soft serve since she's gotten used to having it at Hometown (we go to Hometown more than I care to, but it's so convenient with 2 kids who can't wait to eat and they can be loud there if they do get loud since it's so casual). So that was an upside (I guess? It's definitely a way for them to hook people). Now as for the food itself. The ribs were good. The Western sandwich we got (and shared) had beef brisket and polish sausage in it and they were ok too. Now about the kids' sandwich meats: chicken - pretty good, not dry, could be more moist, but seasoned/marinated well, not too salty. The turkey was SUPER salty, my husband (who always complain that my food needs to be a bit more salty) even said it was too salty for him to eat. I ended up finishing that one for my 1 year old and my 3 year old basically only wanted the mac and cheese (good but I could taste the flour, meaning I could tell there was starch in the cheese and not just cheese and cream which is how I make my mac n cheese at home but maybe I'm just a mac and cheese snob, ok) so I ate a good amount of her chicken sandwich too and the turkey was definitely WAY saltier. Now, the sides... my friend was with us and we shared the food family style and she had the cheesy baked mashed potato and that one was good, the bacon and green beans I didn't try but she didn't say anything (good or) bad about it so I assume it was ok. My husband got the waffle fries which were ok but a bit salty and the onion strings (forgot the official name) was good if eaten right away but very greasy (I know it's deep fried but it still was a bit too greasy which made them soggy faster as they cooled). Overall, it was a 3 star experience. The meats probably would be good but the only one that was really good was the ribs and the beef brisket was solid, but for such a casual place the prices are on the high side. The kids eat free deal on Sunday makes it somewhat worthwhile, but only 1 kid eats free per 1 adult plate ordered (vs. some restaurant it is 1 adult and 2 kids eat free b/c what would a single parent with 2 kids do?). However, the portions are on the small side. For example, none of the sides are filled to the top of the little cups. That's kind of stingy for mashed potatoes, mac n cheese, green beans, type of sides, not like they're costly food items to begin with... I was full only b/c my kids didn't eat much of their food. I want to and do regularly support local mom & pop franchisees but hubby says we're not going back and I can't really disagree with him. read more

The only thing negative about this place is the fact that the closest one to Sacramento is all the way on Laguna Blvd; however, it is definitely worth the drive! We ordered food for curbside pickup and at first everything seemed well until we came home and inspected our food. One of our meals was entirely missing and we called them to report it so we received a $7 refund. Not only that but there was a suspicious black sticky substance on all the food containers- it was too sticky to be BBQ sauce and would stretch when you pulled on it, like slime. It felt good walking up to the pick-up window when the line for dine in was to the door! I called my order in and they said it would take 10 mins. My order was ready ahead of time except for one of the sides I ordered. She literally just dropped my fried okra in the fryer when I checked in. That was ok... it gave me a couple of minutes to grab my free ice cream cone! The food was mouth watering! I had their beef brisket with mac 'n cheese and fried okra. We went to Dickey's for the first time about a month ago and the staff was very nice and we enjoyed the food and the experience. It is nice to have a BBQ restaurant so close. On that visit I saw that they also cater and yesterday I had them deliver a buffet to our office for a lunch for our staff. It was easy to order over the phone and they were prompt and set up. I ordered chopped brisket and sausage. The brisket was excellent. Nice smoke flavor and juicy. The sausage was also very good. We ordered three sides. Mac and cheese, BBQ beans and coleslaw. Again all three were good. These were served in trays and they also brought serving tongs, plates...etc. the cost was low and all the staff liked it. Several mentioned this morning that we need to do again very soon. As an added bonus, the owner called me this morning and asked how we liked the service and food. I would rate both 5 stars. My wife and I finally made it here, after deciding we were going to a month ago. The wait was well worth it. After spending a LOT of time in Texas and eating a LOT of BBQ, this was a GREAT SURPRISE!!! This was much better than JR's and many places I have eaten in Texas. I ordered the two meat plate with sliced brisket and pulled pork with macaroni & cheese and potato salad as my sides. The potato salad was far below what I was expecting (a little runny & the only reason they only get four stars), the Mac-cheese was PERFECT, it was very creamy and thick. Both meats were cooked to perfection and adding the Dickey's sauce was the icing on the cake, so to say. My wife had the brisket sandwich, she LOVED IT. we will definitely be going back. A BBQ place down the street from my home. Then I read up on Dickey's and was slightly disappointed to find out they are a chain. Being it was close and a new business, my girlfriend and I gave them a try. I have to say, very surprised to see real raw meat being loaded into the smoker. This put a nice smile on my face, as I was expecting frozen or prepared bbq sitting over a warmer. My only complaint about this new place is the ordering system. The place was packed, but I can see one reason the line is backed out of the door. When you walk in on a busy day, you are unable to read the menu, so you need to wait until the line moves. When you make it to the food counter, you are asked for your meats and sides. The meat guy did fine. The next staff in line had to ask me about 6 times for my two sides. Fried Okra and Green Beans, not real hard to remember. This kept our food from moving down the serving counter. This step was repeated with the customers in front of us and behind us. One suggestion, either give us a little notepad with the available selections so we can checkbox our items, or move the menus to a more visible location upon entering. Or have a staff member taking a written order to place with each tray. This way the food and line can move swifter. Overall, I would go back. The food was prepared good enough. It is not the best BBQ ever, but it is one of the better BBQ only places in Elk Grove. Enjoy! read more

The food is VERY good, and they are listening to issues and finding ways to improve. The BBQ sauce is drinkable level! The regular staff are amazing and remember us, our orders, and are friendly. We now eat here weekly or more! The addition of giving regular customers credit off was great! The only downside is sometimes I can't eat there due to really long, slow lines. ( Over 30-45 min. of waiting without even getting to the counter to order.) While we love the food, we are hungry people too. And there are tons of great places to eat. read more
