After my initial one star review of Dickey's I received an apologetic message from the manager. The message seemed genuine and I must say that I was impressed that the manager cared enough to take the time to write...A+ for effort on this. Since the manager took the time to write, my wife and I decided to take the time to give Dickey's another try. So, a little over a month later, we just finished our second meal at Dickey's. We both ordered the brisket plate. Between the two of us we shared the Mac & Cheese, Baked Potato Casserole and the BBQ Beans sides. In no particular order: Mac & Cheese: The first time I got this side it was more runny cheese than mac and what little mac I did get was way over cooked. This time around the mac to cheese ratio was much better. The mac was still over cooked but, honestly, it's Mac and Cheese. We're not talking gourmet here. I'll never have a specific craving for Dickey's Mac and Cheese but, as a side, I would get it again based on my experience today. Baked Potato Casserole: I really only remember tossing this side out the first time. It must have been that bad. This time around the potatoes had good flavor and the side wasn't a goopy mess. Sort of ironic that the potatoes were on the dry side this time but they were good and I actually ate the entire helping. BBQ Beans: The beans had a sweet flavor. They weren't bad but nothing to write home about. Now for the Brisket: The brisket didn't have any flavor and was a bit on the tough side. That's the bad. The good is that the former was cured with a bit of BBQ sauce. My wife didn't think the Brisket was tough but she got her's chopped and I got mine sliced. Maybe chopped is the way to go to get rid of some of the toughness. The toughness wasn't bad though and really didn't do much to take away from me enjoying the Brisket (once I added the BBQ sauce). Overall, I enjoyed the brisket. The Flies: Yes. Flies. They were still there. Not as bad as the first time we visited but enough to be annoying and make me wonder what has been hovering around and touching my food. I did notice that Dickey's added fly catchers though. Might I suggest adding a few more? So, my overall impression based on our second visit is that Dickey's isn't bad for a quick BBQ meal. I didn't leave there feeling like I "must" come back but I was certainly left with a better impression than our first visit. We'll likely give Dickey's one more try before giving it the final thumbs up or thumbs down. read more

I discovered Dickey's about 6 months back when my boyfriend said he was craving some BBQ. Me, being the picky, skeptic that I am, didn't think this place would be any good. I was wrong. The bread rolls are delish! I am a bread fiend. I usually order the two meat plate and share with my boyfriend. My favorite sides are the baked potato casserole and the green beans. My husband and I were looking for some BBQ to eat for dinner. I searched YELP and was reminded that Dickies was nearby. We have never tried it, so we took our first trip to Dickies. The moment we walked into the foot, we were greeted by Daniel who welcomed us as we shared it was our first time at the restaurant. He was very patient as my husband and I read the menu to decide what we want to eat. He made a few suggestions for us and was very easy-going. My husband was wearing his Star Wars Darth Vader sweater and the Dickies staff commented on how much they loved Star Wars. It was really nice of the staff to build a rapport with us. We felt totally welcomed!! We also noticed how the staff paid extra attention to other costumers and made sure the lines were moving. They welcomed each customer, and even walked the tables to make sure everyone was enjoying their meals. Daniel and Katie walked to our table a few times and made sure our meals were satisfying. We also noticed the staff working together as a team and heard the staff help one another and provided encouragement to one of the staff that shared she was exhausted. The restaurant was very very clean. The food was yummy and tasted fresh! We are new fans and definitely coming back, but next time bringing more friends and family with us! We were only coming in to redeem a gift card that I received for Christmas but wow what a surprise c: I had no idea how good this restaurant would be. The staff was very friendly and answered all my questions before ordering. Returned here again last weekend, and ordered the same meal, Texas-style Brisket sandwiches, but with larger side orders. We can't get enough of the okra!! Just as good the second time. I told my parents to go to the Dickey's in Folsom, and they had brisket and ribs with okra and green beans as their sides. They agreed with me, and loved their location as well. The BBQ sauce is bland. The Mac & Cheese tasted like it came from a blue box. The BBQ beans tasted like they came from a can. The pulled pork was bland. I had to drown it into a combination of bland sauce to get any flavor out of them. The briskets were bland. The whole experience can be said in one word : bland. I did not enjoy my experience here. The people behind the counter doesn't seem to enjoy working here. I waited a few minutes before she could look up and see me. Like hello. If you don't like your job just go home. I had a very bad experience, first of I walk in and the two lady's working didn't say anything they acted like they didn't know what they were doing and when they did talk they talked so low i could barley hear them, I then asked if they could put extra Mac n cheese and they said no, I have never been to a place that can't put extra on anything and just charge me extra and then there's two people working and instead of tag teaming the food and getting me out of there faster ones just in the back on her phone while the other does all the work, I also went to go get my drink and there soda machines are absolutely gross and a health hazard, I will be calling to report this restaurant, and never come back to this place again customer service is horrible read more

I'm starting to think maybe I just don't like brisket. Even so, I did enjoy my meal at Dickey's. Came here on a whim when I was stranded in Elk Grove at dinner time. Everything on the menu looked awesome, from BBQ chicken to brisket to pork ribs. I decided to save a couple bucks and ordered the brisket, with sides of mac n cheese and green beans with bacon. The brisket was tender, but bland. Maybe this was by design, to encourage excessive use of their house-made BBQ sauce. I followed this protocol and it made the beef much more enjoyable. The original flavor was tasty, but I liked it even more when I mixed the spicy and sweet flavors together. As for sides, mac n cheese was heavenly--deliciously creamy, no weird cheese skins or chunks like what's usually found on restaurant mac n cheese. Green beans didn't wow me, basically just filler. Kind of disappointing considering they had bacon in them, and as far as I'm concerned, anything with bacon should taste magical. Interior had that kitschy/roadhouse vibe filled with Americana that seems pretty standard for BBQ joints. I'll be back, but next time I'm getting the ribs! read more

I love great BBQ and when I have the time I choose this Dicky's location. My favorite is the meat salad. This location has a friendly staff and the service is always fast. My wife loves that they have free vanilla ice cream and always gets a cone. A huge plus for me was the fact that they offer catering. I hired Jared, the owner, for two catering events. One event was a breakfast meeting for 35+ people and the second was a lunch speaking event. The attendees at both events were very happy to see Dicky's there. My husband and I had the brisket and the spicy cheddar sausage. Both were very good. And since kids eat free on Sundays, we got our daughter her own kids meal which comes with your choice of meat, a side and a small drink. My family and I visited this place on a Monday night. Had a coupon so we decided to give it a shot. PROS: 1. Meats were all delish!!!! Pork ribs were falling off the bone, pulled pork was smoky and tender, chicken breast was delicately smoky and JUICY. 2. Free soft-serve ice cream 3. Fresh baked rolls were pillowy and yummy CONS: 1. By 7:30 pm they had run out of brisket, turkey, and polish sausage. 2. Really overpriced for the portion size. Rib plate was $13 for 4 ribs. It also came with 2 small sides. 3. Sides we got were mediocre at best Mac n cheese is made with a canned cheese sauce, green beans were flavorless. Okra and french fries were ok, but what food doesn't taste good deep fried? 4. Just because there isn't much BBQ in Elk Grove isn't a reason to give this place as high of a rating as it currently has. Don't get me wrong, the food here isn't bad, but saying it's the best in the Sacramento area is quite a reach. I'll give them credit for having ribs that were fall-off-the-bone, but I prefer ribs that either have a delicious sauce or a flavorful rub -- these ribs didn't have either. Maybe I'm just a "ribs snob", but these didn't fulfill my craving; not sure if I'd order them again. The sauce was "okay", but it's more generic than it is special. The brisket wasn't bad, but nothing to write home about. As other reviewers stated, the Mac and Cheese is also of your standard variety (just kind of there). I did like the "Baked Potato Casserole" (which is really Mashed Potatoes with cheese and green onions), but that's because I'm a mashed potato addict. Best part of the meal was the free soft serve (especially considering the price). I'd come back if I was really craving BBQ and didn't want to drive downtown, but it's definitely not worth waiting in a long line for. I stopped in for lunch because I was working nearby but I would have made an excuse to do so anyway. By now, I have eaten at many of their locations and have not been disappointed; Elk Grove is no exception. I usually get their 3 meat plate: beef brisket, St. Louis style pork ribs, and jalapeno cheddar kielbasa. These are my all-time favorites​. I have never actually tried their chicken but my wife has and she loves it. Their meat is always tender and tasty. The three meat plate was $13.95 and my large drink was $2.50 -- great price for the quality and serving size. Not only is the BBQ great but so are the sides. It seems rare that you can find a great BBQ place that also has great sides. I have tried just about all their sides by now but my current favorite is the Asiago cheese creamed spinach. I absolutely love the stuff. You get two sides with the three meat plate and I love that creamed spinach so much I ask for two. I even love that little roll that comes with your meal. They serve Coke products with 8 different selections plus two kinds of fresh brewed iced tea (sweet and unsweetened). In my opinion, it's impossible to claim you have a great food joint and not serve fresh brewed iced tea. So that's another great score for them. They also serve lemonade. Don't forget to finish off your meal with some free softserve. Every location seems to offer this. Grab a cone and treat yourself. It's not just for your kids and you deserve it. The place is very clean and the employees are friendly. I highly recommend giving them a try, you will not be disappointed. To me the formula is very simple: Great food + great service + great prices = value I will, without a doubt, return. read more

Absolutely fantastic customer service. I was very impressed the first time I came in by how cordial the staff was and was doubly impressed when I came back for the second time. I came in ten minutes before close (I thought they were open later on the weekends) and they gave me two free sides with my family pack just because they didn't have any rolls. So this is hard to write because I know times are tough for restaurants right now BUT. We are in town for ONE night and we ordered from Grub Hub. We ordered $50 worth of food. I will say the order arrived quickly so yay to Grub Hub for that. HOWEVER. We ordered - pulled pork sandwich with potato salad. Brisket plate with roll, mac and cheese, beans and 2 sauces. We did not receive the pulled pork sandwich, any of the sauces, any silverware or napkins, the bag was not sealed. When we called the poor young lady on the phone was being fed lines by her manager (he should have immediately taken over the call and spoken to me but he hid behind his poor clerk) that "oh sorry" we refunded your sandwich and you can come get more food if you want but we are very limited in what we have and you'd have to come get it because we are closing soon. Like WHAT??? Where am I supposed to find ANYTHING at 830pm in ELK GROVE, California? Why didn't someone let us know you were out of pulled pork - we would have ordered something else? Where at least are the sauces for the $20 plate of 2 pieces of brisket that you DID manage to send and what kind of service is this???? Poor clerk says I'm so sorry - we'll refund your order. But dude!!! I don't need the money - I need the food for my 73 year old dad that now has nothing to eat!! I just gave him my stuff that we ate using a CRACKER as a spoon since we had no freaking silverware!!! TRUE STORY. And, like, here is my thing - if you are in tough times, as so many are, when someone goes out of their way to order $50 worth of food and pay fees to have it delivered the LEAST YOU COULD DO is TRY to provide a good product and decent service! We live nearby, and finally had a chance to try Dickey's. The first thing we saw was the free soft-serve ice cream as soon as you walk inside. Nice! After checking out the menu, I decided to get the Texas-Style chopped brisket sandwich. I've had this before at the now-defunct Flying Pig restaurant, and thought it would be safe. For my sides, I got the BBQ beans and the Potato Casserole (sort of like mashed potatoes with cheese and chives). The brisket sandwich was ok, but I probably won't get it again. The meat was dry and not very tasteful, even with their BBQ sauce. The Potato Casserole tasted good, but was also dry. It needed more butter. The beans were like any other BBQ beans I've had. My wife got green beans and bacon, but after one bite, almost threw up. I tried it (how can you go wrong with bacon?), and I did the same thing. It didn't taste like any other green beans and bacon I've had in the past. The green beans were huge, and the bacon was soggy and mostly non-existant. It should be crispy, smaller pieces, and more of it. The best part was the free ice cream afterwards. The worst part was the guy chopping the meat. He hacked it so hard and repeatedly, you couldn't talk anywhere in the restaurant while he was wacking. I guess no one showed him how to rock the curved knife back and forth to cut the meat up, silently. read more

Best Ribs ever!!! I would say its a little pricey for the meal, but honestly, you get what you pay for, and this place has top notch ribs/meats and delicious sides. Here in Sacramento I hear nothing, but bad things about Dickey's however, the online reviews are consistently 4-5 stars. So to put this mystery to rest I decided to try the place for myself. My experience at Dickey's was not bad at all. I was greeted as soon as I opened the door. The first lady on the line explained the menu and started our order. The food is prepared in an assembly line style fashion. I ordered the brisket sandwich, mac and cheese, and BBQ beans. The place was relatively clean. There were a couple dirty tables, but a few groups just left before I arrived. I did find several clean tables to choose from. The area where the drinks and BBQ sauce is was also clean. All of the food my family ordered was good. Nothing was exceptionally good, but nothing was bad. The best way i can describe it is cafeteria-style. Karen cleared our plates when we were finished eating and reminded us to get some free ice cream. The workers behind the counter thanked us for coming and said good night as we were leaving. Taste of food wise, some may consider Dickey's food to be bland when compared to our local Sacramento BBQ hot spots, but at the end of the day the food is not bad and the service is good. read more
