Dinner was delicious and views were amazing. I had the red and white sangria pitchers, mango guacamole, crispy calamari, empanadas, and the ahi tuna tostada. I would recommend all of the above! The white sangria is definitely on the sweeter side. The one thing I would have wanted was more chips for the guacamole but they brought us more upon request for no extra charge. We could easily split the two apps among 6 people. The tostada and the empanada together were too much food so I would recommend sharing. Another group had the nachos and enjoyed those. Ordered delivery to our hotel and the food arrived quite quickly within the promised window, good start. Then we checked our bag. 4 rangoons for 8.50, ok we know we're in a tourist town and elevated food comes at a premium, but they were noticeably lacking the shrimp that was promised. 2 small pulled pork egg rolls for 10 bucks...had we known it was going to be such a small serving we probably would have ordered two servings, these things are anemic for the price. And the 24 dollar duck enchiladas?! I'd be hard pressed to identify them as duck if I didn't order them, they're also quite small, filled with more undercooked squash? Than anything else, and the red rice was some of the worst I've ever tasted having lived all along the southwest border and beyond. Bland, undercooked, like it was dumped out of a birds eye freezer bag. Oh well, hungry tourists gotta eat...oh wait...no plasticware was included in a delivery to a HOTEL. We were sat right away... they have tons of seating and a great view of the water on the second floor dining area. Service was great. My son was obsessed with his burrito with steak, French fries, and guacamole, pico, and cheese. I had chip and salsa as I didn't know they have a vegan menu and ate before I went out. Was disappointed by Diego's after hearing from multiple friends about how great the tacos are. Got the fish tacos, they were just okay. The fish was good, and the veggies and pineapple were fresh, but the tortilla was not good, it was not soft at all. Tasted like the cheap kind I buy at stop and shop. But the nachos were awesome! Best thing we ordered. The street corn was okay too, very small portion for the price. This place is on the expensive side. Ugh! I do not see the appeal, the drinks were ok, but man, was the food way below par. Let me start by saying that our server Wyatt was great! Attentive, happy, and wanted to make sure our food came out quickly. We started with the salsa sampler with the add guac. The salsa was bland, lacking flavor and had no redeeming quality, the only one worth its salt was the tomatillo salsa, which was still just meh. The add-on guac was not worth the extra price, a 3oz plastic soufflé cup which had 1 giant chunk of avocado, some smashed bits and 1 tiny chunk of tomato. I think the staff forgot to add the onions, cilantro, garlic, salt and lime. We also ordered the crispy calamari, another subpar dish, a paltry 2-3 tubes worth of calamari chopped and fried, with more blue corn tortilla chip "garnish" than actual calamari. The poorly named "crack fries" which seems like a person that named it has never had anyones life changed by drugs. The "fries" were actually potato wedges that were still pretty toothsome on the inside, and coated with a bunch of cheese. For $10 we were expecting a nice plate of fries, but it was a single layer of potato wedges on a 1/8 sheet pan. We also opted for the duck gravy, which was okay, but more of a broth than a gravy. Apps 1/5 stars Mains I ordered the barbacoa burrito, maybe they forgot to put the pork in, because it seemed like a pretty small 10" tortilla filled with cheesy rice and a few black beans with a purée of straight up jalapeño. My wife got the fish tacos, they were okay, she wasn't a fan of the batter, and 2 tacos with no side was a bit pricey. I feel bad for my parents the most though. They ordered the oaxan roasted chicken for 2. On the menu it seemed promising but the actual dish was underwhelming. A large plate of or boiled rice with a slight hint of tomato and no other seasoning, topped with what looked to be about 1 breast of bland chicken, served with black beans and street corn. The street corn has some flavor but the corn itself was chewy like it was frozen corn that was thrown in a broiler that was left to char, mixed with some sour cream. When someone orders a meal for 2, you expect for it to come out with some grandeur, instead it was overall underwhelming and flavorless. Mains 1/5 Drinks This was seemingly where Diego's star shined the brightest. The only hiccup here was we ordered Mexican coffee, which is typically coffee with tequila, and some sort of coffee liqueur like Kaluha, instead I got a cup of joe with a shot of tequila, which is not very appetizing but luckily the coffee was hot and the liquid blanket of tequila helped to warm me up. My wife got the silver Fox which was a blood orange and elderflower margarita and she enjoyed it. My second drink was the passion of spice which I loved. I'm a huge fan of del maguey vida so this drink had a great balance with the smokey mezcal and the spicy habanero infused tequila with the sweet but tart passion fruit Drinks 3.5/5 Overall, I understand the price of eating in Newport, especially during the fall of 2021, but this seems more like a tourist trap that panders to people that are afraid of the actual flavors of Mexico and only cares to appeal to those "looking for something" close to where they're shopping on Bowen's Warf. Paying over $200 (including a generous tip, since this was no fault of our server) for an at most sub par meal is not something you'll ever catch me doing again at Diego's. read more

The food was delicious but the service was horrific. I made a reservation for 3, a day in advance, that was the easy part. When we got there, we were seated quickly. However, we weren't given menus for quite some time. We knew it was going to be a problem when our waitress came over, saw we didn't have menus and asked in a very odd way, if we needed menus. It wasn't busy when we were there, by the end of it, yes. Some sides were missing from the plates - the birria tacos were delicious, thank you cook line. Bartender made some yummy drinks and was busy himself. Again, the wait staff ruined it for all of us. They finally gave us our check and then had multiple people, including our waitress, several times, walk by without taking the check so we could pay. We had our jackets on and were clearly ready to go, but still, no one looked our way and we were seated by the door where everyone passes. I understand short staff but this reached the point of unnecessary or plain laziness. They didn't have a wait for 2 for a table inside (no water view). The interior table did look like it was placed there just to maximize seating capacity, but we were hungry and took it. I came here this past Thursday for lunch after liking for something new in Newport to try. This place is super cute. We loved the whole vibe & decor. The way the entire restaurant opens up makes it feel like you are sitting outside no matter where you are seated. There was an extensive and intricate drink menu. They had all types of mixed drinks and many different concoctions with tequilas and mezcal. We love that everything here seems so fresh and that there was real thought into the concoction for drinks and combinations of food items. My friend and I have been trying to cut back on eating meat. This was a great choice because they had many vegetarian items on the menu. We got the Frutas y Verduras Guacamole, #11 Rangoon's, & La Coliflor Quesadilla. The guacamole was good & had a nice presentation. The grilled chunks of pineapple were a nice touch. Could of had a bit more flavor. I felt bad because it came with a big basket of tortilla chips & it there was no where near enough guacamole for the amount of chips. Was a bit pricy for the amount we received. The #11 Rangoon's were our favorite. The dipping sauce was so yummy we put it on some of the leftover chips & quesadilla. We thought the cauliflower quesadilla was really different & we were eager to try it. It was good but could have used a more filling. It seems like just a bit of cauliflower, mushroom & cheese inside. There was a super small pico de gallo served with this. I asked for more & the waitress said sure thing. When we got the bill we were charged extra for the additional pico de gallo without warning. I got the Spicy Paloma as a cocktail. You could get it Medium or Spicy. I did Medium & it was just the right amount of Spicy. I would definitely say if you're in the area to give this place a try. Great atmosphere & interesting menu. Tri level space, great atmosphere, curious as to how we got seated on a busy day. Ordered an app as we considered dinner. It was supposed to be four different salsas and chips. We added guacamole for a three dollar up charge. The plate came. The chips were cold. Here is my description of the four salsas. Three of the four had the consistency of water. They were so runny that you couldn't get them to stay on the chip. The tomatillos salsa was very salty. The guacamole tasted like an avocado run thru a food processor. No seasoning at all. The pineapple salsa was cut squares of pineapple. The drink menu was extensive. We chose not to have dinner and just moved on. This a small place with two person round tables that are outdoor style iron tables with seats that are fairly uncomfortable. The lighting is that of a bar with an overwhelming Hugh of red. Basically a bar environment with an extension for dinning. Now for the food! For a "Mexican" restaurant I found the appetizers to be bland, lacking the basic salting, not to mention any sort of spice. The guacamole was a disappointment, and the fried calamari, claimed to be crispy on the menu, was a bit soggy and again lacking in flavor (at least some salt people). The roasted chili peppers were the only appetizer that was on par. Redemption was achieved with the main courses though, so simply skip the appetizers. The Korean BBQ Taco was very well prepared, and worth a try. Skip this if you do not appreciate Kimchi though. Tacos, were filled to the hilt and the pork was well prepared and flavorful. The "Perfect Quesadilla" was in fact true to it's name, we tried the chicken! The Burritos were also a hit with or without the Beans, you do need to ask for extra BBQ sauce, as they were a bit dry. Overall experience was ok, see the photos, and skip the appetizers. read more

(Vegan review) Ask your waiter what is vegan. Our waitress said most things are made with butter. I ended up getting the watermelon tacos, which I have to admit, I was really apprehensive about at first. When they came out, the watermelon isn't even noticeable. It's like a crispy texture in the Taco but I barely tasted the watermelon flavor itself. I don't usually mess with vegan cheeses but I decided to get it on the taco and it was really good. DO NOT BRING A LARGE GROUP HERE! We had a reservation for 20 people for dinner and were told for a group of our size we would be required to use a fixed price menu. The menu options we were given were for a $25 or a $35 fixed price, with 20% tip and tax NOT included. That was fine, except when we later compared the menu prices to the regular menu prices, we realized there was a significant markup for the fixed price. For example, the three entree options on the regular menu cost $12, $14, or $17 each, and because we were 20 people, we had to pay $25 plus tip/tax (worked out to $32 each, before drinks). The food quality was good, but what bothered most members of the group, on top of the perceived value for the money, was the incredibly slow service. Despite 6:30 reservations, things weren't quite ready and we weren't seated until closer to 6:45. We didn't get even chips until closer to 7:15 and it was almost 8 by the time we got our entrees. Given that the chips were our only appetizer (and a sure thing, since it was the only app option on the fixed price menu), AND that chips are just chips, and not something elaborate, those should have been coming out to us promptly when seated. We had a similar expectation for the main course, since there were only three options, it should have been easy to prepare our dishes. The poor service, combined with the overpricing, would lead me to not come back to Diego's again, with or without a big group. But I would certainly caution anyone using the fixed price menu to think twice. read more

Came here on a recommendation from a local uber driver. It was described to us a cool and hip place to eat where a lot of young people go. Right up our alley! We dined for lunch. The place is small with only about 15 tables or so. Seated right away for a 2pm lunch for two. Good assortment of Mexican food with some original recipes peppered in here and there. Things like Korean BBQ tacos (made with pork belly) and a Cali burrito. I opted for the Cali burrito, my husband got the loaded fish tacos. We also got the salsa sampler for an appetizers. Chips on the salsa sampler were good, not great. They are served room temperature seasoned with salt and pepper. You get 4 types of salsa with the sampler. The original was not for me, it looked like a salsa smoothie, no chunks and with tiny air bubbles like it had been aerated or something. The smoky salsa was my favorite. Then there was mango salsa which was very fresh and then a guac cream style salsa as well that as a thick and crunchy texture which was good. The Cali burrito was large and filling. As were the loaded fish tacos. While both were good, I wasn't left licking the plate not did I find myself trying to fit it another meal at this place before we left to go back home. It was just alright. Service was a little slow, but in their defense they were very busy. Just be forewarned if you are in a rush and need a quick in and out, this may not be your place. read more

I will precursor this for RI locals or others... we are from So Cal & are Mexican food fans/afficianados so when a place boasts flavors that would otherwise be local to us we have to try & chime in. This place has great atmosphere & location. Brunch looks PHENOMENAL & recommended but we were there on a week day. That being said, my husband's tacos were 'okay'. The rice was like out of a box. My Tuna CRUDO was excellent fish but the dressing of it was a bit of a miss. Nice flavors but OVER dressed. If you showcase local seafood, why put so much sauce on something all you taste is the spice & not the fish? This begged for a drizzle v a puddle of sauce & wanted some citrus like lime. Wasn't a big fan. They were swamped so it wasn't the most pleasant experience. Kept waiting around on numerous occasions. The food was subpar. Cheese fries had hard cheese on top of them as if they were setting around for over an hour before getting to the table. Fries were also pretty thick and unseasoned. Not even going to lie the quesadilla tasted just like Taco Bell if that's something you are in to. Coca Cola I ordered was flat and I never could get a fork/spoon with my meal. So i had to handle a messy quesadilla before I had the opportunity to ask for a fork.
