Decided to give this spot a try after after passing by several times. Drinks were good and service was attentive. The food however was lacking. We tried the guac, which was essentially avocado and no seasoning. The salsa was so watery with no flavor. The chips weren't hot or fresh, which id expect from a restaurant like this. We did get street corn which was the only saving grace here. I asked my server for a recommendation and she basically said everything was good. I appreciate a server who can really guide her guests. I got the chicken street tacos and my husband the fish tacos - both left a lot to be desired. The chicken was quite salty too. Refried beans were tasty however. Thisvery popular restaurant on the wharf. The food is very good. It's a great spin on Mexican. We enjoyed their fish tacos and steak and fries. The restaurant is funky-decorated with lights and interesting decorations. What was most impressive was the bartender, Gus. We went to try to wait for a table and the wait was very long so we sat at the bar. As you can imagine the bar was packed with people drinking and with people waiting on a table. As we sat we enjoyed the skill it took to manage the turn over and all the very complex drinks. The best part was he was amusing customers with humor as he mixed specialty drinks. Would definitely recommend THIS PLACE WAS AWESOME not now. I have been back a ton of times and every time it gets worse. They now have gone cheep. Food is served on weird metal trays, everything is a extra charge. If you want you guacamole spicy it's a dollar more ect .. the Quality of food is way down. Wow. This place looked promising as we approached on Friday evening around 9:00 pm. It was pretty crowded though there were open tables. The decor and atmosphere are nice on the two levels. And the trays of food looked pretty good as they passed by. But the staff! Dear God. When we arrived they made a point of telling us that there would be a 20 minute wait. Ok. They took our number and despite the empty tables on the ground floor, sent us upstairs to the jammed bar above to await seating. We sat out in the cold for 20 mins and then came down to see how things were going. At this point there were 8 empty tables and the staff informed us that they were trying to close the lower level. What?!? If they didn't want more food customers, just say so. I wouldn't be offended, but we waited nearly half an hour for a table they never intended to give us. Just awful. read more

We ordered the house guacamole (which is HUGE), the rangoons, and gluten free famous fish tacos. Overall we left happy, full, and with leftovers. Awesome food. Horrible service. Let me start by saying the food is outstanding. If that's all you want, then stop here. So my brother recommended this place and my wife and I tried it out. 9/23/21 around 2pm, upstairs bar. The service couldn't have been worse. My kids would have been better servers and they're under 10. We waited for about 15 minutes before even being acknowledged...once they finally saw us, we made sure to put in our entire order. Food and drink were good. But thankfully we did that as we were never noticed again. We had to shout for them to close our tab (didn't even ask if we wanted anything else)...we were never even given silverware or napkins for our food (thank god we were next to the service station to get our own plates, napkins, and silverware). No hello when we showed up, no goodbye when we left. Literally nothing. Was extremely surprised the "paying the bill" process didn't take shouting and honking a horn for their attention. So if you are willing to put up with horrible service for good food, it may be worth it. But if you want to actually be waited on and enjoy and overall experience - absolutely move along. It's almost as if they went to the local homeless shelter and hired the first 4 people they saw who never even knew what customer service was, let alone how being a part of society worked. The servers were not rude at all. I must clarify. They just were barely present. And it wasn't just one of them, it was as if they all made a mutual pact to avoid contact with any customers as long as possible and see who won the game. They all won. read more

This used to be one of my favorite restaurants in Newport, but they've made some really poor menu changes. The portions are smaller, the prices are higher, and the food quality has slipped. My go to order used to be the Perfect Quesadilla. It used come with snow peas, but now you have to order them as an extra side, which they ran out of during this visit. The quesadilla itself turned into essentially two poor quality mini tacos that were overfilled with cheese and had a weird flavor. I couldn't finish the food it was so bad. The guacamole Del Mar went from a very generous portion size to a really tiny bowl. To get the old portion size you have to pay significantly more. They also have this really odd salsa that tastes like spicy marinara sauce. It cost extra for you to get and is not worth it. This visit they did have an old menu item (the pork belly tacos) as a special that had not changed in quality, but you can't really count on that one thing being there in future visits because it was only brought back as a special. The highlight of the meal was the service. Our waitress was very in tune to how we were feeling about the food and comped us 2 drinks. She was attentive throughout the meal and tried to fix the issue to the best of her ability. The drink quality does appear to be the same. read more

The thai chili dipping sauce that comes with the rangoons- yea I put that on everything. It was amazing. *BEST* fish tacos I've ever had. Diego's is a nice place, with good food and drinks and with high potential. We ordered margaritas and beers and really enjoyed them. However, their staff, at least on the day that we were there, was a disaster. We had to remind them 3 or 4 times about our drinks order as they completely forgot. We had to ask 2 or 3 times about our food as it took almost one hour for some tacos. The waiters responded saying that they were really busy, without even apologizing. A waiter should always apologize and never come up with excuses, as it is not the customers' fault. If you're too busy that's your problem and the restaurant's problem. Food came out pretty good but certainly the experience made it taste a lot worse. read more

We went for lunch and had a 45 minute wait which was expected on July 5th. What was unexpected was the server took our drink and food order and then disappeared. We had to go to the bar to order drinks, steak tacos arrived and the steak was cold as it was in a refrigerator. The manager was walking by and took the tacos to have them warmed up. The server seemed actually shocked and appalled when I suggested he should follow up with his guests when serving tables. He proceeded to drop the bill and credit card on the table and walked away without apologizing or saying a word. The tacos were actually delivered by the hostess 30 minutes later after we paid our bill and we're walking down the stairs to leave. Went to sit at the upstairs bar. After sitting for about 5 minutes of waiting for someone to serve us we moved down to make room for a party of 4 that came in. The new party was welcomed and given menus before they could even sit down while we were still left unattended after being there first. We were finally tossed menus without a word and not asked what we would like while the newer party was immediately served. After another 5 minutes of being ignored we got up and left. The newer party was 4 white Americans while we are two minorities. Seems clear the motivation of the 3 male bartenders who all ignored us. Won't be back. read more

if you want a table at diego's i'd recommend getting there (or sending a representative from your party) about a half hour before you want to sit down. then you have some time to walk around the nearby shops while you wait for them to text you that your table is ready. the service was pretty good and despite the crowds our food didn't take long. the street corn salad was very good but not spicy like i was thinking. the nachos as well as the 4-way salsa starter were very fresh & full of flavor. overall a great meal! read more

Great spot for brunch! We were in Newport for our friend's wedding over the summer and friends recommended this place for breakfast. The wait was about 30 minutes, which was not too bad since there were a bunch of shops nearby. Our waiter was super friendly and attentive (even though he had a black eye covered up - rough night?). Diego's was dog friendly and had super cute/laid back decor. We were told to order the spiked chocolate milk called a cold quikie. So glad I ordered it because it hit the spot and helped my wedding hangover. They also have many breakfast deals. You could get a breakfast plate for $5 if you get a cocktail. Great deal right?? Rude and arrogant host. Not many pet-friendly restaurants in Newport RI during the cold weather season. They claim to be pet-friendly, but once we were seated, the host asked us to move our dog to another spot a couple of times, and finally, requested for our large-sized (i.e., taller than the table) dog who did not bother anybody and was sitting as close as possible to our table on the floor to sit under the table to accommodate other guests. Did not appreciate the mansplaining that "we all have to work together to make things work". The food is also nothing to write home about: $15 for 2 street tacos with very few toppings on soggy corn tortilla... you can do better. The one star goes to our server who was lovely. Came here with my husband from CT while we were in Newport for the weekend. The service is alright, not bad but not great. Kind of like a "nonchalant/I don't care" attitude from the waitresses. Nobody greeted us when we got there and we felt a little lost. I ordered the vegan nachos which were a big portion and really yummy, it was really different and nontraditional with the vegetables but I enjoyed it. My husband ordered the vegan Cali burrito with tofu and it was really good, they put fries inside it. Price is fair for the area. Would recommend 8/10- good spot for vegans/vegetarians, they offer an entire separate vegan menu. read more

We were seated 30 minutes after our 8:15pm reservation. At first, our service was very good, polite staff good drinks. My friend (vegetarian) ordered the mushroom quesadilla and was served a chicken quesadilla. She was very upset and lost her appetite. Even when they brought her the proper one she couldn't eat it after biting into chicken. I get it accidents happen but then at least take it off the bill. Even though we weren't drinking, the brunch food was pretty good. We ordered the diego's huevos and our wharf hash. Both meals were $8 each, and the price goes down to $5 if you order a cocktail with it. I didn't eat the wharf hash (because of the cod) but heard it was really flavorful and cooked perfectly. My dish, diego's huevos, was delightful! It had some spice to it, which I really like and the baja aioli was a nice touch. We tried to come back here at night for drinks, but sadly it was too packed. There are only about 5-6 seats at the bar, so try to get there early if you want to sit there. Also, be prepared for some loud (but good) music. read more

Had lunch here during restaurant week for the first time and was pleasantly surprised! All the food was super fresh. Amazing fish tacos. Great guac and the flan was out of this world but the shining star for me were the drinks. They have a great drink menu, especially for mezcal lovers. The service here is so weird. I came here recommended by my friend, who is a local, and was raving about this place. We were seated, but our server was so awkward. She would not refill our water jug, consistently forgot to bring refilled drinks, and did not let us know when our food would be coming out. We ate lunch around 3 PM, and the restaurant was probably only half full, and when we had asked where our food was, she said she would check for us and just avoided us until our food came. I think our food took at least 30-40 minutes to come out. Since we were starving, we asked for chips and guac with salsa, which she later comped for us. (Bump up one star). She didn't even give us plates or anything when we were eating our chips. The salsa was getting everywhere. Here's what I ordered: Fish tacos (comes in 3, with guac, salsa, and rice) - These were good. Were they the best fish tacos I've ever had? No. I've definitely had better. I didn't like the pineapple in the tacos, it added a weird sweetness that I didn't appreciate. Definitely get the Baja rice, since it had a lot more flavor compared to plain brown. Duck and carmelized onion empanadas - I really didn't like the sauce that came with these. It tasted almost like liquid apple pie? It did not taste good with the duck/onion... The onion was very tender, but honestly these two empanadas looked like something you could get from the supermarket in the frozen section. Overall, the dining experience here was very whatever. I really didn't think the food was that great, and the service was terrible. Tips from our table: The diet coke was VERY good. Even though it came in a plastic cup with ice, it tasted like it came from a bottle and was freshly poured into the cup. Bathroom is located by the host stand - you need to ask them for the key. The salsa that comes with the chips is VERY watery. I don't know if I liked that. We were eyeing the table next to us with sangria; it looked really good. read more

We accidentally found this place while exploring Newport's harbor area and thank goodness we did. The atmosphere is perfect with great music and the staff was amazing. Trust me ask for recommendations they will not steer you wrong! Loved this restaurant! They have a variety of mezcal & tequila drinks, which happen to be my favorite! They have sweet versions as well as spicy versions which were exceptional! Zach, our loyal bartender, made great suggestions with drinks and food! The seared tuna tostada was the perfect mid day light lunch bite! It was so fresh & definitely add the avocado. The guac made at Diego's is made fresh and it was tasty and spicy, didn't need even a pinch of salt, which is usually my critique of guac made at restaurants. Two other friends and I came here after the beach one summer weekday for dinner. We ordered a margarita pitcher ($30), choosing to go with the peach flavor. Food: My loaded fish tacos ($20) were incredible. * Get them with tuna - cooked medium rare. So delicious. * There wasn't much Baja aioli sauce, but for good reason, as a little went a long way. 3 tacos were served along with about half a cup of brown rice. The tacos alone were very filling, and truly 'loaded' with the ingredients listed. Atmosphere: For all the chaos that goes on in Bowen's Wharf, sitting on the patio of Diego's was remarkably relaxing.
