I love this restaurant but was disappointed that they closed their dining room early this evening. I arrived at 7:44pm but upon arrival I was told, "to go only". I got dressed up to go to dinner, not to mention drove quite a distance to dine out tonight. Needless to say, I took my business elsewhere and did not get food to go. I love Yelp! Again, this community is the go to for recommendations. Time and money are important and it's good have a resource you can trust on where spending both. The only outside dining is a picnic table, so if you bring your dog, you can get food and eat out there, but there's no table service outside. We ate inside... walking into a slice of 1960s Americana feels like walking into a movie set or being on a road trip across Route 66. The clientele did not disappoint for people watching, they seemed perfectly cast for the ambiance. Some have probably been regulars for decades. We opted for 3 pieces fried chicken with waffle to share between two people. They know what they are doing and they do it up right. Both were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. (kind of like my personality). The menu says the waffle comes with maple syrup. Our server said it's real.... but if you are skeptical, as I am, go for the apple butter in the jar on the table... it looks more like vegemite, but it has a nice apple spice flavor that goes well with the chicken and waffle, but it's gilding the lily, because they are both good without added embellishments. I was bragging about this place to my fiancée for weeks about how good the food was and how it's my favorite place to come too my family has been coming here for years but unfortunately we always get the worst customer service here and it's normally always three older ladies i think two of them are twins and some other older lady with short black hair anyways I don't stop coming because I love the food but dislike the snotty service I always get. Huge fan of fried chicken and this was some of the best in my opinion! If you are looking for the spicy greasy variety this is not it. This is the least greasy fried chicken I have ever had! It had a more subtle taste and minimal breading, more like an old fashioned grandma's homemade type of cooking. The chicken is also never frozen and my drumstick was super plump and juicy, not like the scrawny ones you get at some other fried chicken fast food chains. Especially in this f'ed up economy.) Manager offered me a stuffing sample and pineapple coleslaw sample. The stuffing was 7/10 and the pineapple coleslaw was a 9/10. And I HATE coleslaw; but this one was AMAZING!!! Food took about 12 minutes to come out and it was hot! . Got home and started eating. The food was okay. I expected better, but I think all the hype got my expectations too high because I've been waiting a whole week to try this place. Mac n Cheese: the noodles were a little undercooked. I didn't taste any seasoning whatsoever. But the cheese was kicking pretty good. 5/10 Pineapple Coleslaw: OMG!!!!! Amazing! I f***ing HATE coleslaw, but this will definitely make me come back! 9/10 and not a lower grade! Chicken: The chicken was decent. I got a bad leg piece because it was very chewy and looked very dark. Dinah's fried chicken is so good. We've been coming here for 20+ years.. They currently have a dine in special if you order something that is $5, you can purchase chicken legs for $1 (5 max). We usually split a jumbo combo(5 pieces of chicken, 2 sides, and a dinner roll) their pineapple Cole slaw is the best Cole slaw, their dinner roll is amazing when you add butter and their apple jam. Their mashed potato and gravy is also good. I liked the waffles with apple jam instead of the syrup. Their servers are always so nice and if you have any questions on the menu they will be sure to help you. But I don't think you can go wrong with anything on their menu. They also serve pies for dessert. I've never tried them because we're usually full from the food. The corn is fried, I'd much prefer boiled or steamed..the neighborhood has changed a bit recently. I returned to Dinah's a week later for my second visit. I was expecting good things but boy was I disappointed in the food inconsistency from the first visit. I was able to find a few spots in the tiny parking lot. And the spaces are tight! I walked in the shop and there were 4 to 5 people waiting for their order. I actually didn't get the same good vibes as my first visit. So I patiently waited my turn to order. I basically ordered the same thing as last week. I had a10 piece family special. A word of caution, order or announce that you have a Groupon right away. The lady gave that mad dog look as she was redoing the order. Whatever lady, we are all human. The pot pies were on sale for $6 with the sign on the ordering counter. After I paid, I went next door to Vons to pick up a couple items. I noticed for the first time there are two curbside pickup up spots and two picnic tables. Not a very appealing outdoor setup for eating imo. So like clockwork, I came back in ten minutes and my order was ready. This time I made sure to ask for butter. I was give 4 artificial butters made with vegetable oil. I won't ask for these again. Just a waste cuz I will not knowingly eat vegetable oils. Once I got to the car, I decided to sample a piece of chicken right away to have a taste of the texture. It wasn't as crispy as I thought it be. I definitely tasted the seasoning on this piece of wing. I like the skin to be super crispy and I'm not sure if take out is the answer. I get home and unbag the food. I opened the styrofoam containing the pot pie. Ehh, not the same as last week. The pot pie was obviously much greasier just looking at the crust. I soon up the first bite. Oh yeah, super greasy. I tasted the grease and saw it at the bottom of the pie plate. I already know what the rolls taste like. And the pineapple coleslaw was a winner last week. It tastes the same and delicious. The new side I chose based on the reviews I read was the stuffing and cranberry sauce. I liked this better than the MP&G last week. Mmm, very good. I ate several bites with the cranberry. I ate a thigh piece. Well seasoned is kinda an understatement, maybe the chef was heavy handed on the seasoning... Yeah, it was salty imo. I dunno, if it's like this consistently, then I'm out. I swear they must pressure cook their chicken because the chicken is cooked to perfection, especially the coating they use for their chicken. It's light and crispy. I say it's cooked to perfection because the meat just fell off from the bone. When you cook fried chicken, there are different degrees when preparing chicken. They nailed it. Cooked to perfection. I can't explain it. Super tender and JUICY. You know when chicken is cooked well done because it will be dry. With Dinah's Chicken, it's soft and falls off the bone. NOT DRY. IT'S DELICIOUS. The breading isn't thick and it's just right and not so greasy! Our friends told us that there were all kinds of sides that we missed out on like, cornbread and macaroni and cheese because we got the coleslaw and macaroni salad. WTH. The coleslaw is lightly sweet and has pineapple. Somehow it tastes like Hawaiian macaroni salad but instead, it's coleslaw made into heaven?!!! Next time, I'm buying two of the large sides of the pineapple coleslaw! Their macaroni salad is on point, too. The macaroni pasta was cooked al dente and once you have a bite of the salad, it takes you back to some good days at a July 4th cookout with your friends. Everything was so delicous! First of all, I want to say that their chicken is to die for particularly if you get them to make it fresh and they don't give you something that they may have had laying around so I will gladly wait for fresh chicken. The one thing that's a problem and has turned me negative is that they close at 8:30 but they close the dining room at 7:50 now why does it take actually 40 minutes to worry about cleaning maybe one or two tables? On my way home today I decided to stop by for fried chicken, Dinah's you did not disappoint! I was planning on ordering online but did not see stuffing as a side through grub hub. The meal I chose was $39.99. I decided to just walk in and order instead. When I walked in I saw that there was outside and inside seating available. The signage was encouraging social distancing and all the employees and customers had on masks. I was greeted by a friendly cashier that took my order. The meal was listed as 30 and change in the restaurant and I was able to order the stuffing. I was told the stuffing is made in house and included a side of cranberry jelly. Yum! I paid and sat down maybe 10 minutes. Then my order was ready. So fast! Good thing I didn't stay longer as those pies were so tempting!! I ordered the 10 piece family meal which included 2 sides and 4 biscuits. Our fried chicken was tasty and still hot when I got home. The sides were delicious, the stuffing was moist and flavorful and the fruit mallow was a perfect dessert. The parking is free in the lot and on the street. The service was friendly and fast. My friend John grew up in the area but we were in the area making a sales call and was telling me I was going to love this place. He was right. They have a seating area outside; a pretty nice setup. We didn't know so we went inside to see if we ordered first and the young man told us we could sit down first and we did. He walked over right away and was very nice and courteous. My friend mentioned that he grew up in the area and loved this place. Our waiter said that they had opened a second location. The owner sat some friends not far from us and then came to our table to thank us for the business. Everyone here was very engaging and the service is quick, which is great for a working lunch. I got the 2 pcs chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy but had to add the side dish of the coleslaw with pineapple. Everything was hot and tasty.
