I think the food here is excellent, I had a selection from the salad bar with kale and Brussels sprouts salad, Caesar salad, red cabbage salad, chicken salad, meatballs, tilapia, whole wheat pita. They have a huge selection besides the salad bar including tossed salads, Asian noodle soups, hot and cold sandwiches, pastries, coffee & tea & smoothies. You can sit at the various tables placed around. However, it was freezing in there and I wasn't near the door. That ruined my eating experience. Only recommend in summer or take out. I saw Dishes and it reminded me of my first job right after college what seems like an eternity ago. I came way after rush hour, past 3pm, so it wasn't busy. I noticed the staff being pretty unfriendly and inattentive, some even trying hard to look away. Odd. Food was bit dry and not much left, expected after lunch hour, but still sad. Coconut Crusted Chicken. Orange Roasted Sweet Potatoes. These two looked so attractive in this upscale salad bar. Dishes, family owned, is located on 45th Street between Madison and Fifth Avenues. I knew this place but never went in. Now in two weeks I have eaten here twice. Frequented by office personnel who take out but others stay in to eat. Like I did. Both the chicken and sweet potatoes were delicious. I also took some greens, rice salad and other foods. Then on the second visit after I ate, I filled a box with four chicken pieces and another with sweet potatoes to eat at home. I also bought two cookies: flourless chocolate for Age and a chocolate chip one for myself. No doubt this is a fairly pricey place with fancy offerings like crab cakes but it is tasty and worth every penny. Dishes is a clean salad bar with music and a pretty restroom with muted chartreuse green walls similar to the walls in the interior. All the employees were professional and friendly. I'm not sure if they use organic ingredients or whatnot, but I filled a small plastic container with foods that weren't that heavy and the total cost came out $23! For a meal the size of my hand. Dishes at 6 East 45 Street is great for controlling my portion size for lunch. It's not far from Bryant Park and the Public Library. I can eat as much as I like when they have a buffet. I like to take my food to go sometimes. There's lots of public seating in the park where I can relax and eat. It's another neighborhood I enjoy taking the long walk to from Upper East Side. I eat small portions so my meal usually isn't expensive. I get a little of this and a little of that. The pastries are really good and I like the coffee too. It can get costly if you're hungry. I have always had a pleasant customer service experience at Dishes. I'm recommending you visit this location when you're in the area and you don't want a traditional restaurant experience. 2.5 stars for service, 5 stars for food We did a big group order for our office lunch. It was delivered 30-40min late and all the orders arrived in two big bags with NO labels. It was basically impossible to figure out what each wrapped sandwich/plate was, so everything had to be opened (slightly unsanitary) and still guesswork had to be done to decide which dish was what. However, my salad happened to be easy to discern and although I had to switch out my dressing last min bc they didn't have the one I previously ordered in stock, the lemon juice worked perfectly and the rest of the ingredients were absolutely delicious. Went here for lunch and was dissapointed at the limited protein options. Compared to other food halls in the area, this one was subpar. The prices itself was very overpriced for the portion. But I found they didn't have a lot of fish options, just plain old tilapia. I'm not sure if they have different menus for everyday but I went on a Monday and the options there sucked. For some reason, I was very insecure about Dishes. It's right across the street from my office and I'd heard good things, but every time I wanted to treat myself to breakfast I'd find myself shamefully shuffling by. There are lines everywhere, and the food areas seem kind of haphazard. Like, you call it an omelette bar, but I see quiche back there! I see quiche, Dishes! When it's empty, it lends itself well to wandering around and deciding your wares, but if there are people there and you don't know what you want, then you sort of feel like you're in everyone's way. At least if you have a crippling social phobia that still raises its ugly head from time to time. But today, I was gonna get breakfast at Dishes if it killed me. I started by trying to go into the wrong door. Dishes basically consists of a hot breakfast buffet (eggs, veggies, pancakes, like 5 kinds of oatmeal, meats). On the other side of this buffet are prepared foods like sandwiches, wraps, parfaits, etc.) There's an omelette (and quiche) station and a coffee bar with juices and pastries as well. They encourage you to just grab food. No lines. I can totally see how this would suck if it was super crowded. However, I like it because I don't feel obligated to get in line without knowing what I wanted. I basically circled the buffet on the outside and tried to decide what sounded good. And in the end, nothing really did. My breakfast of choice involves cheese and egg in some sort of sandwich format. Bonus points if you add fancy ingredients. But at Dishes, the only vegetarian breakfast sandwich I saw was their wrap, which was tiny. The sandwiches looked delicious, but they all had meat. Maybe this is why I had such a hard time here. Nothing really caught my eye. In the end, I got a scoop of scrambled eggs, two slices of roasted tomato, a few hash brown potatoes, and a piece of French toast. Everything tasted super good. Even the scrambled eggs (not my favorite kind of egg). I didn't notice the price, but in keeping with my fellow reviewers, I'm sure it was expensive. My company caters from here, and I love it. The sandwiches are to die for. Whether it's breakfast or for lunch, everything that I've tasted from this place has been great. I've always gotten the egg and cheese one, but the BEC is the usually the first one to disappear, so I'm pretty sure that one is good too. The egg is sunny-side up and a bit runny, and the cheese (I think Monterrey) is melted to combine the bread with the egg... in other words, absolutely amazing. As for regular sandwiches, try out the chicken one with ricotta and apples. Literally, my favorite sandwich that I have had in the city so far, and before you get on my case about all the great NYC deli options, I don't like sandwiches, so unless they're the only option, I don't go for them. I have been going to dishes for years. Recently they increased the price of their soups which is understandable with inflation but they are also cutting quantity. I get a large chicken meatball soup and one time the manager filled my soup and I had four small chicken meatballs in it. So last Friday I ventured out of my office and down the street to Dishes. So this place has lots of selection, it's very clean, and they take credit cards with no minimum (take that Cafe Manhattan!). Sure it's packed with people but the line moves fast and the cashier's are efficient. The food here isn't going to win any awards however. My salmon, rice, and steamed vegetables was no better than what I can get at a Whole Foods buffet. What I can get at a Whole Foods buffet? A much cheaper lunch. This place is absurdly expensive! A half filled container cost me $11. Ridiculous. Not sure I'll return. Maybe I can stomach soup a few more days a week, especially if it's $5 less. read more

The flow for customers is a disaster for lunch time. Service: where it all falls apart for me. My experience I am sure is very similar to others'. I get it, you're busy. It a happening place. However, the service level is almost next-to-none. I have asked for things multiple times just to get the response, "I don't know", "we don't do that", and sometimes complete lack of staff at a station. Especially after 130pm. They must send 90% of the staff home. I waited 18 minutes for someone to come to the soup station last week. To me, this is unacceptable. Overall: in an industry where service is highly regarded as the cornerstone of keeping customers, Dishes seems to have greatly missed the mark. I knew I wanted a light lunch but looking at the prices, I don't think I can afford to have a real lunch here. At $7 for 8oz of food, you'd be surprised by how much stuff weighs!! This place is so busy, I hate to give it props. Seems like the word is out, so... There is no better cafeteria bar food, but today the specials were out of this world. My favorite today was an empanada, which happened to be the best ive had anywhere, which forced me to write, a pasta with 3 mushrooms and some ridiculous meatball with a pink sauce that I think had feta and tomato. Every time I go, I leave very happy. I usually here once a week. One of the things I like the most about it is how many different salads they have. I also find that if you're looking for vegetarian options they usually have at least 10 things. I can tell that they put some thought into the food. There is always hummus and tahini available. I also really like that they make gluten-free cookies and even flour free cookies. I have found that the fresh juices and smoothies are OK but they tend to put sugar in the smoothies and the juices are not made with the freshest vegetables.
