What was ordered was supposed to be a combo with French toast eggs sausage hash browns and two drinks. You looking for some home-style diner food then the Dixie House is for you. I have been here for breakfast and dinner and I always have a good meal. The food for breakfast is the standard fare. With eggs anyway you want them nice and hot. The plate portions is a very good size with plenty of food. The coffee will keep coming to your table. Can be a little busy at breakfast but there is plenty of seating. You will be seated and you will have table service. The service is very good fast but not pushy. You can sit and enjoy your coffee. Dixie House has some nice pies to choose from. I'm always full so I never tried them. For dinner I like the chicken fried steak my favorite food. They do a very good job at making this meal. And the sides are very good also. They have great iced tea nice strong not that weak stuff. Not very busy at night during the week. So there is no wait to be seated. So I make the rare decision to order breakfast to go and I think of Dixie House Cafe right down the street. Reasonable prices and the food was pretty good. Great assessment of pies too. So I decide to order online. No way to do to that. I do find their menu online but it doesn't list the prices. Very strange. I google Dixie House Cafe and prices and find a menu. I decide to order the Vegetable Omelet listed at $6.40. I call and make my order. Go to pick up my food and the price is over $14 for an omelet, hash browns and toast! I told the cashier what the menu said and she told me it was a mistake look online that that was an old menu. The food was pretty good. Toast was soggy though. What's there to say about this place that stands out. The service is weak because they tip pool, meaning all the servers get the same tip regardless of effort. As a result, they avoid you if they can hoping someone else will deal with it. Tip pools never improve customer service. The food is generic, often times room temp or cold, never fresh, lots of canned veggies, etc. everything will taste exactly as you anticipate but slightly worse. The atmosphere reminds me of a car dealership waiting room. Dark, bland, and uninviting. I've been 3x in the last 4 months and always wonder why I keep going back. Now I won't go back anymore. This is a good place for down home cooking. On Monday's and Wednesday's for a limited time you can get either chicken fried steak or chicken fried chicken and 2 sides for $5.99. (no sharing). The chicken fried steak was pretty tasty. It had a nice crunchy batter and the white gravy didn't overpower. The steak was crunchy until the end which is a sign of well fried steak. Had the mashed potatoes and fried okra. Real mashed potatoes and the okra was fried perfectly. We opted for the cornbread which is sweet but it lacked some salt. A little disappointed in that. I drove out to this café specifically for a slice of pie. This was my first visit. When you walk in there is no host stand but it isn't self seating. When I walked towards the dessert case filled with beautiful delicious looking pies a host appeared from the right of the dessert display and took me to a booth. They have booth seating along one wall, window side. The majority of the café is table seating. The pie was delicious and the tea was exactly the right amount of sweet. A slice of pie was only $3.50. Saturday morning, my brother and I went to dixie house care on lacaster to get breakfast. We both ordered a combo special, 1 pancake, 2 eggs with cheese, hashbrowns, bacon, toast. The food then came, and for starters no cheese on the eggs as asked and only one pancake was brought and I was told mine would be brung shortly. So I began eating my other food waiting on my pancake which NEVER came. I waited 10 minutes and no one ever brought it to me, as well as I had to wait 5-6 minutes just to get some plastic silverware I had to go to the front and get myself because no one came back to check on our table. Then after about 15 minutes I got annoyed, went to the front, explained to the cashier and was told I would be charged for everything else but they would take the pancake off. I paid with no hassle because I didnt want to start an altercation. BUT I am a loyal customer at dixie house cafe on lancaster for many years since I was a child, and I feel as if at the LEAST I would have been compensated for the meal that was messed up to began with, and that they didnt finish bringing me. Ruined my breakfast and Saturday morning, and was told "sorry about that" like it was not a big deal. How do you have 2 of the same orders and you only bring out one full order? How does that make sense? And what kind of customer service is that to not even bare witht the fact it was THEIR mess up and not mine? I did try this place. I had the pork chops on one visit and chicken fried steak on another visit. Both were good. On my last visit I had the fried chicken. The chicken was excellent. The black eyed peas superb! My only complaint was the fries were not crispy. I sent them back to be cooked some more and I never got them back. I guess that was my punishment. But I did get some peas to go instead. I'm going back today for more chicken and to see what sides I can get to compliment my meal. Plus I'm bringing a guest. I hope they're not disappointed. The food at this place absolutely SUCKS!!!. I'm giving it a five star rating because I don't want to hurt their business because it's the only place near my home to eat breakfast in a pinch. This place has gone downhill since I was last here. I used to love stopping by here but I won't be going back after my most recent experience. A group of 5 of us went for breakfast before we began a day of errands. We were seated quickly but it went downhill from there. After ordering our drinks by one server, another server took our food order. We had not been sitting there more than 2 minutes and she was frustrated we did not know what we want. She was rude and short with us the rest of the time. When you order you apparently can't make any substitutions (even toast instead of biscuits) and there are no add ons allowed. Our drinks had still not been delivered as we ordered food and we are becoming irritated as we ordered and found we could not get anything we wanted. When our food did come out it was greasy, over cooked, and tasteless. We never were offered refills and we seemed to be forgotten by the entire staff.
