Spectacular...My first time in Taos, New Mexico included a romantic dinner at Doc Martin's. A wonderful experience because of the lovely ambience in their lovely room, warm and gracious service and delicious food. The server greeted us with kindness and brought professionalism rarely seen and raises the level of the experience. The food was amazing. We shared appetizers and had mains. Each dish was made with care and attention to detail. It's my hope that my life will bring me back to New Mexico and to Taos. And when that happens I look forward to returning to Doc Martin's. read more

The new menu is fantastic! We ordered ceviche, carne asada and the king trumpet mushroom and huitlacoche mole (best vegan dish in town). We'd order it all again. It's rare to give an entire meal such high marks, but this meal was executed perfectly. We came with kids: they were given crayons, coloring sheets and the staff made them feel like special guests. To our minds, service is as important as the meal when we dine out. The host, manager and server, (Kelly), were all very accommodating -- and the restaurant was packed! Pretty good for breakfast. They are a little slow in keeping the coffee cup full, but I drink it quickly.

Very good New Mexican food. Located in the historic Taos Inn, Doc Martin's is a bit expensive, but very good. My wife and I both had enchiladas. My chicken enchilada in blue corn tortilla was moist and delicious, as were the beans and side salad. Her shrimp enchilada was loaded with shrimp. The waitstaff was excellent. Excellent food, professional wait staff and lovely ambiance combine to deliver a lovely dining experience. The menu is surprisingly sparse, so don't be shocked, but each item is quite yummy so you'll be fine. What must be their signature dish is the crusted chile relleno. It is quite the masterpiece, and taste so good. The highlight is the crunchy exterior which is unexpectedly dark colored yet so satisfyingly crunchy that it makes all other chile relleno seems rather mushy by comparison (because they are). Topped with goat cheese, its texture matches it flavor quite well and is a yummy treat but its over the top expensive, being in the same price class as a filet mignon. The price tag threw me for a lok, I understand that they probably put more work to make this than your everyday chile relleno but I'm not comfortable paying that much for it. The tacos are all excellent, it doesn't matter which one you order. My shock withe the tacos was that the pork belly tacos looked empty when they first arrived. they were flat on the plate with a smear of something that looked like melted cheese and two tiny, short, strips of what looks like overlooked bacon. In fact, that's the whole taco. It's looked weird, plainly empty but the flavor from the pork belly is full and rich, so it almost makes up for the sparseness. I still think the pork belly was overcooked, it was tough and I had to fight with it to tear a piece off and it was a bit hard to chew so that was quite the exercise for my jaw but I was so wanted to enjoy the flavor that I put up with the excessive toughness. The place is lovely and comfortable, the staff is friendly and professional, the place is clean and pretty, with some art on the wall that you can purchase. The parking lot is a bit odd, across the dirt road, behind a wooden fence but you'll sort it out. It seems odd to have to walk along the dirt road back out to the street to then walk along the building to get to the front door but once we finished our meal I discovered the back door which is much more convenient. Overall it was a lovely experience, a bit expensive, and the battle with the tough pork belly taco had me wondering if I would return, seeing as how it does take us a little while to get here (we live outside of Taos) but overall its a likable experience. read more

I highly recommend Doc Martin's. We called ahead and were told there was open seating in the bar area. As luck would have it, a table opened up just as we walked in! We had drinks (my usual Diet Coke) and my partner had his usual boulevardier which was very good. I ordered the rellenos and they were awesome. They made my top ten list!. The service was good, the dishes were tasty. We came during Covid so we all sat outside. (No inside dining allowed by Governor's orders). It was lovey. They made space for us in the courtyard. My wife and I had dinner today (6-20-2021) and she ordered the blue enchiladas with chicken and I the taco plate. Both were served with overly salted beans and uncle ben's rice. The blue enchilada with chicken was mostly cheese inside and out. The taco plate was chicken, carne adovada, and pork bell. The chicken in both meals were really chicken salad. Really, who does this! We let the waitress know and it was like talking to an adobe wall. I know for some this may be adequate or chic, though for anyone who is serious about their New Mexican foods, stay away. read more

Good service on the patio for drinks and in the restaurant for dinner. All three of us started with a cup of green chile. It has just the right amount of heat IMO. Our mains were chicken enchiladas and two orders of chile rellenos. The enchiladas were good, the rellenos were great and worth the $25 price. They're stuffed with goat cheese and lavishly coated with roasted pumpkin seeds. One of the est meals I had in a week in NM. Service was fine - ambiance OK. Wish we had this in VA. read more

I'm torn between a 3 and a 4 here. I really like Doc Martin's because of the atmosphere. I love the legendary Taos Inn and this is the restaurant that comes with it. The Taos Inn is basically on the square in Taos, and has quite a history. The property that the Inn and restaurant sit on is large with lots of buildings. The buildings make up the "Inn", and the largest of them, the restaurant. Doc Martin came to NM in the late 1800s and set up his practice in the largest of homes on the pc of property. That office is now the restaurant at the Inn, Doc Martin's. Since it was a house, it has a lot of rooms. I love sitting in the rooms and thinking about what has taken place there. There's a cozy little nook that I can only imagine was his office. I digress --- people come here to eat! And that's the part that I get a little sideways on. The food is just so-so, it's consistent, but consistently so-so. There are lots of selections, both New Mexican and American. Last time I stopped in, we were there for lunch. We startred with a margarita - very well made from the Adobe Bar, which is in the same building (and makes some darned good margaritas), then had some chips and salsa and actually ordered a large plate of nachos to share. They were good, but nothing to write home about. In the past I have had their seared scallops which are prepared with a little red chile pesto and served with posole. I've also tasted the blue corn enchiladas which are served with your choice of red or green chile (or you can have "Christmas" - which is both) and rice and pintos. They have a fair wine list with good prices. Lunch will run you about $30 for two, all in, and dinner will set you back about $50-75, depending on what you order to drink. If you find yourself in Taos, NM, stop in and have a margarita at the Adobe Bar, and grab a bite at Doc Martin's. It's not anything over the top, but the scene is good, and you won't be disappointed. read more

This is the first restaurant I've been to, when everyone within earshot complained about either the food or the service, but most usually both. Oh, what random service it was! A server stopped by with a glass wine. "What wine is this I asked" - What you ordered was the reply. Can you tell me what it is? No. It' s what you ordered." My neighbor then leaned over and asked if it was a Malbec because he had ordered one some time ago and it had yet to arrive. Then a server stopped by and asked if we wanted bread. Yes we said, and then she disappeared. I guess she was just taking a poll. The food didn't arrive until after we sat there completely unattended to, in a very hot and very stuff alcove ("it's adobe - it heats up and then doesn't cool down.") The shrimp burrito was surprisingly actually fairly good. The elk burger was fairly good. The substantial side salad - which was provided as a substitute for fries because the frier was down - was fairly good too, but our getting it really pissed off our neighbors because they ordered it instead of us! The whole place felt like the kind of "special occaision restaurant" that people go to when they have few other choices, so this place can slide by with an atmosphere, menu and approach to service that perhaps was considered suitable 40 years ago, but times have changed significantly since then, but this place certainly hasn't. It's a time warp in here. And while, Taos thrives on it's history, this is one place that could use a break from its history. read more

Rode 350 miles on the motorcycle, checked in , showered and arrived here for dinner about 6 pm. Pleased they had our favorite Pinot on the menu. The menu is fairly succinct, 8 starters and 12 entrees. 'I ordered he scallops for a starter. Oops silly me, they had run out of those..... almost always on a Sunday night per our waitress. So I ordered a caprise salad. Weird presentation. Mixed greens, grape tomatoes, red onion. No basil, but in the dressing. Mozzarella you ask? oops, they're out. Order the hangar steak for dinner, right on, they are out. Ordered the pasta of the day. Lemon shrimp over angel hair. Good, I'm just crabby now. Dessert. Chocolate cake for dessert with vanilla ice cream. It came with orange sherbert!!! Out of vanilla. I give up and DO NOT RECOMMEND. read more

WARNING THEY AUTOMATICALLY ADD 18% TIP TO YOUR BILL We went there on the advise of a local who said the food was better than Love Apple or La Mese. We had a perfectly enjoyable dinner, I personally thought the Doc Martin Relenos were fabulous. Then the bill, they added 18% automatically. REALLY!!!! I get that you might want to reserve the right to do this to Europeans or South Americans, but to a group of native English speakers from Chicago where we know that 20% is a minimum tip for even average service is unacceptable. To me this is a trick to get unsuspecting tourists to double tip. In Chicago, New York or Washington, D.C. I have never seen this added to a group under 8 without it being clearly announced that the management automatically added a tip because they paid there servers an above minimum wage living wage. Did not see such a statement anywhere. Very annoying. read more

What an experience. As a first time patron I was surprised based on previous yelp reviews. The margaritas were great, food was timely and delicious (chili relleno, carne asada, and ribeye... oh don't forget the lava cake). Atmosphere is cute and nice but the food is just bad. I'm a visitor, came for dinner on a Sunday, new year's day, don't recommend it. Comparing some of the pictures posted on Yelp to what was served, it does not seem consistent. My assumption would be that they don't secure ingredients very well, run out of things and improvise. Also there probably isn't any decent trained cook in the kitchen. things are over cooked, old oil is used to cook things, and dishes are too salty. I'm not a chef but you know when food is bad. I wanted to try the lamb but they were out. We ordered the rabbit rattlesnake sausage, it has no fat content, was super dry and was sliced into all over, which lets all the moisture out when cooked, wouldn't it? The place wants to up hold a high class restaurant but if the food is as bad, it just doesn't work. I'm sure visitors come for dinner thinking it's a decent place, the only thing that's good is the building and atmosphere. Not sure about drinks but would not recommend the food. read more

I'm officially done with this place. They are supposed to have great margaritas, but mine was awful. It's hard to mess up a margarita, but there was not enough lime juice and the flavor was way off. I had the classic, my friend had the frozen classic, and my other friend had the pomegranate frozen ("I Need A Miracle" or something like that) and none were good. We all ordered at the same time, but all of the drinks were delivered except mine. After half an hour, I finally went to the bar and asked the waitress if I was going to get my drink or not and she obviously had not yet told the bartender that she was short one drink. After getting it and tasting it, I wish I'd had just let it slide and saved my money and frustration. The staff is aloof and the margaritas suck. Just skip it. This place is not the same as it used to be in the good ole days. read more

I was told by a local that the hotel that houses this restaurant is two hundred years old. Anabel makes a fabulous cup of chili, that is blended (not chunky). Their guacamole is very good and they have organic eggs. Their salsa has some kick, but not so much using New Mexico standards. The decor and service were all quit nice as well. read more

Went here during the Summer, and was duly impressed. If you're going to Taos, do yourself a favor eat here at least once. No, it's not really 'kid friendly' in terms of options, and in my book that's a good thing. Although it's classy, it's really not that expensive relative to other places with comparable quality. Well worth it. Got the rattlesnake & rabbit sausage dish and it was awesome. Even my picky-eater girlfriend dug in to this The pickled cabbage really brought out the flavor, and it's a unique dish you probably won't find anywhere else. She got the blue corn enchiladas and was equally impressed. Server was extremely attentive and thoughtful, prompt and pleasant. Outstanding service. I had a lunch meeting at Doc Martin's restaurant and thought I would try some special food here. For the first time I ordered their appetizer, Grilled Rattle Snake Sausage (yes, the name was bizarre!). It tasted delicious with the sweet cherry sauce on top. I would also recommend Doc's Chile Relleno Platter, a real popular dish here. Their foods were made from quality farm growth product. I definitely come back to try the rest of the menu. When a hungry family is out on patrol, it is not always easy to satisfy all members of the clan. Doc Martin's was able to do this however, as our wonderful, yet brutally honest (she informed our family that we were high maintenance due to the specific eating requests - some are vegan, others vegetarian, etc.) waitress, Laura, brought us some great dishes. The Chile rellenos to start were delish, and the restaurant had a nice "warm inn" feel to it. Good service, good food. Possibly stay away from the eggplant parm, go southwestern, as you are in New Mexico, the land of enchantment! Also, I would like to compliment the restaurant on trying to source locally when possible - you go Doc! If you are looking for a comfortable option, and need to bring the kids (seems like a child friendly place), as well as the business execs, I believe Doc Martin's is the place to go. The only hiccup we had was in making reservations. I called a couple of days before arriving, got an answering machine asking me to leave my name/number, and never got a call back. When we arrived, I called again - left message again - no call back. We finally decided to go to Taos Inn and physically make reservation - since the restaurant wasn't open when we arrived (3pm), we left a message with the front desk clerk. And we finally got a call back! Unfortunately, when we arrived, they were a bit swamped and our 8pm rez ended up getting us seated at 8:30pm. But that aside, service, food, and ambience were all lovely. We dined on chile rellenos, pork ribs, Caesar salad (with traditional dressing), and amazing lamb shank.
