As soon as we got the food, we checked in Amtrak waiting room,& we saw oil spilled in the bag. I went back with the wet sandwich. She really thought we should pay 25 cents to get a new bag,or keep the oily bag. She got an attitude. But what if we didn't check immediately, we would've ended up with being angry on a train! This used to he my fav spot in Penn Station to snag a sando before hopping on Amtrak, until tonight, about 2am before my train boarded. I went in thinking it was all normal, lol. I guess when you're the only business open, you can take advantage. Somehow an $8.75 turkey sandwich and a liter of cheap water came out to $15.75 (no receipt). I ordered extra lettuce and literally got one leaf on each side. They were a bit light on all the toppings, including the cheese. I swear they thought I was a lost tourist with tgese crazy unexplained increases. I've paid a few bucks less when I come in during busier times for almost the same order. White there trying to decipher the pizza choices 8 or 9 years ago, I overheard some one order a ham and cheese ... no, make that 'brie,' sandwich on pump with lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle. I stepped back to watch the production. Production it was, like a ballet. About 2 minutes later it appeared on the counter...MONSTAH! Heck with pizza, I'll have one of those! Paired with a cold beer it's the perfect train companion for the trip back up to Bastoon. We have made it our go-to ever since...not one regret. There used to be a Subway at Penn Station (I'm referring to the place that makes sandwiches, not the New York City Subway). Then, it shut down due to the (totally unnecessary) LIRR expansion project. As a result, Don Pepi became my de facto sandwich shop whenever I'm at Penn Station. They give you a decent amount of meat and the sandwich is somewhat delicious. There are so many options on the menu...you know how your brain is thinking this or that lol I finally came to a decision and ordered a Smoked Turkey on a roll with Mayo, lettuce and tomato...the guy picked the cheese for me as there were so many different kinds of cheese...he went with Cheddar for moi. Small very unassuming deli near the AMTRAK in Penn Station. Went for breakfast and it had a decent size line but moved VERY fast. You order, head to the register, and by the time you pay you already have your meal ready. They have a small menu for ideas but most people just come up with their own orders/fillings/combos. BREAKFAST: I got a breakfast wrap with 3 eggs, pepper jack cheese, sausage, bacon - came out to $6.55. Bacon was definitely better than most other places, thicker slices. Sausage was pretty generic, eggs were cooked well. The tortilla was your basic flour type. SUBS: Went again and got an italian hero - came out to almost $10 after tax The size was good - your regular 10ish inch sub size. I'm lost for words that I would even give this place a 1. I work next door for united airlines. I come here faithfully for breakfast every single day. 5 days a week. The food here is amazing. It's all made with love. It's fresh, everything smells great. But today is the day that I'm considering going else where. Besides I'm in Pennstation surrounded by several restaurants. Yet I always come here because like I said, the food is delicious. But I'm standing in line with another customer in front of me. This other customer walks right in and stands next to the customer in front of me, and the employee attends the man that walked in after us rather than attending me that was patiently waiting in line. I almost walked out after that. I don't care if the man is a regular because so am I. Hopefully no one else will experience what I went through this morning. The food is literally, it doesn't matter what you order. Everything is really good. But they need to be more organized. What can I say, I'm still coming here every day. I was treated with total disrespect when I ordered a sandwhich and came back with a receipt telling the manager that the staff gave me something different from what I ordere. He kept telling me to take a picture because I threw the sand which out after realizing that I didn't get what I ordered while on my train home. He showed no remorse for the mishap which I was upset about because I paid for a sandwich and went home hungry. the staff pretended like they never saw me before knowing that I am a transit employee that comes there frequently. Usually when they make a mistake like that I come back and they exchange it out but because I didn't see this until I boarded my train I was shocked at how the manager especially handled the manner while also pointing at me like I was his child. the worst egg salad sandwich i've ever had in my life and it was over 10$. incredibly bland and the only flavor that is there is somehow not the flavor of any egg salad ingredients? it almost tastes like really questionable bacon grease but not even salty. the texture is also like no egg salad i have ever had- it's like gritty baby food. I needed something quick to grab in penn station. I stopped at the Dunkin' Donuts. For a hot tea. Next to the Dunkin' Donuts there is this don Pepe deli. I was excited to come across some real food in penn station. Don Pepe is a full deli. Using boars head cold cuts. There was 2 people in front of me. The location is small there was really no structured line. I ended up ordering a turkey lettuce tomato sandwich on a roll. It ended up costing $8 and change for the sandwich. There wasn't a lot of meat or lettuce on the sandwich. There are defiantly other delis that give you more meat. But it was enough to fill me up for lunch. If you get the combo that comes with a drink they charge you $11. I think that includes a bag of chips I'm not sure. They had salads at this location to go. I was almost going to get a salad but they were in to go containers with stuff that I dident really like. Olive and onion yuck. Well. Overall. It's defiantly a different place to eat at in penn. I give 1 star for service. The breakfast sandwiches are good, but you have to watch them CLOSELY at the register and order your food a certain way to avoid getting "nickeled and dimed." That is no way a business should be run. I shouldn't have to watch you like a hawk. If Penn Stations rent is too high and this is what you have to result to in order to make a profit. Well you can't afford to be in Penn Station. If you don't pay attention they WILL over charge you, AKA steal your money. I caught the woman at the register multiple times attemping to over charge me. The most ironic thing about it is when she is called out about it, she tries to talk over you and say sorry over and over as you're talking at an attempt to drown your voice out so the other patrons don't hear that she's been caught over charging you. The only reason I come here is because Penn Station is undergoing a rehabilitation right now and Don Pepi Delicatessen is the only place serving "fresh" breakfast. Once that changes, I will not be back. As I continue to go in the meantime I pay DILIGENT attention to how I place my order. For instance, they have "combos". Let's say the #10 is a bacon, egg and cheese on a bagel with a small coffee/tea. Let's say the price on that is $5.75. If you walk up and say, "Give me a bacon, egg and cheese on a bagel" the person taking the order will then ring you up INDIVIDUALLY for every item on that sandwich. Where you could've paid $5.75, you're now paying $9 for ONLY A BACON, EGG AND CHEESE, the coffee/tea is NOT included. Okay so you've gotten robbed while placing the order, let's walk over to pay now where the next robbery occurs. When I'm paying, I'm super attentive because thats where the extra thievery occurs. Also if you qualify for any kind of discount. Do not mention it until you've seen your total. If you mention it ahead of time she will enter it in the middle of adding other items so that instead of getting a discount on the ENTIRE order you (which is a percentage) you only end up getting a discount on an ITEM (which ends up being way less). read more

This place is str8 trash. I'm a train conductor who until today ate there at least 3 times a week. This evening I stopped there for a ham and cheese sandwich plus a bag of wise cheese doodles. So the bag of cheese doodles already has a price of .99¢ preprinted on the bag from the manufacturer. However, something in me told me to ask for the price. the worker there told me it was $1.50. I said the price on the bag says .99¢. He became nasty and told me either to buy it or leave it behind. This is when I decided to stick to my principles. I told them it was against the law to sell food that has a preprinted price from the manufacturer for a higher price. The worker kept arguing. Super quick and quality sandwiches. I ate mine on my train home after an exhausting day marching throughout the city and it was AMAZING. I was starving and really did not want any greasy or processed food. I was so happy I took the NYPD officers suggestion to try this deli out. It was excactly what I was looking for. Not heavy but still delicious. I got sliced chicken deli meat, cheddar, vinegar, mayo and lettuce and a huge bottle of water for about $16 Apple Pay(expected for NYC/Penn). I changed my order a few times and the staff did not seem annoyed by it at all. I do wish they also had white onion as well as the red onion. Other than that no complaints this establishment is great, will be returning and is my new go to place for food in PENN station. :) read more

Solid bagels, extensive selection of sandwich options (or BYO sandwich), and good prices. This is my go to spot at Penn Station if I need a quick bite to eat. Their everything bagels are good, they put a decent amount of cream cheese on them, they have good deals ($4.40 for a bagel with cream cheese and coffee and so on) and they're always quick to get your order out. Don Pepi is a breakfast/sandwich stop in Penn Station indistinguishable from the others, save for the slightly lower prices. Generally the food in Penn Station is unremarkable at best, and often it is quite bad. The food at Don Pepi is functional, but nothing I want to eat with any regularity. I found their breakfast sandwich to be heavy on processed cheese, disguising the taste of the egg entirely. The bagel wasn't so great either. Additionally, there is no established line so people arriving several minutes after you will likely be helped first -- in a word, frustrating. Actually, when running late to catch your Amtrak / NJ Transit / LIRR train, same is true. So I followed fellow Yelp reviewer's recommendations and now count myself lucky to call Don Pepi my "go-to" regular deli when I'm at work. I work a super long shift each weekend so I pick up a bunch of food and drinks each morning and I'm always thankful. Besides that the folks working are so nice, remember my orders, package it up beautifully (the cashier is the BEST!), and make it a great experience. This is a well-managed place: They know everyone is in a hurry and hustle to get you your food asap. What's great: - large iced coffee with milk and sugar OMG yes!!! deli coffee so good! - egg platter: scrambled eggs with potatoes and toast (you can get bacon, etc. too) - egg platter: ham and cheese omelette with potatoes and toast - egg and cheese on a roll, etc. - #15 Italian is AMAZING but is a gut buster -- FYI they slice the meat fresh for each order!!! - the "American" version of the #15 -- might be the #9 - less hardcore than #15 still great - anything on a hero is great - bagels with veg cream cheese and tomatoes - bagels with lox and cream cheese - large pasta salad (i pick off the vegetables usually) - grilled vegetables (it's deli-made but if you need something green) It's a Boar's Head deli -- so they have the full array of meats and cheeses so it's really solid. I've been meaning to try the dill havarti (not sure if they'd do a grilled cheese but suspect they would). They have croissants and muffins and stuff too -- pretty yummy. They also have Tropicana juices, MASH, Aloe drink, coconut water, and the usual (Pepsi-contracted?) drinks that are available in Penn Station. Salads are a little packaged for me -- there are a lot of chopped salads places around (in Penn Station and outside) so this is not really the place for that. But if you are taking the train and it looks good to you, i'm sure it's fine. If you need any confirmation, the Amtrak / transit / police & security folks eat here. And just now I saw them making like 40 sandwiches for a huge to go order -- and they still got me my order super fast. I've been eating here for about 6 months every week and have had a great experience every time. Yep -- this is a great spot to grab a sandwich and drink before boarding your train to "wherever". I personally am a fan of the Chicken Salad with BLT on whole grain, but the selection is fantastic. My co-worker grabbed prosciutto and arugula on a baguette which looked yummy, Fantastic selection of drinks and chips. Fresh tasting - fast and was better than the club car food. Check it out! I'm not from New York. I grew up thinking deli sandwiches are disgusting. I used to associate deli sandwiches with Subway and Jimmy John's. I know this sounds crazy but where I'm from people don't run to the local deli for a sandwich. I was in Penn Station and needed food immediately. My better half who's from New York pushed me to try this place. I got the roast beef sandwich with Swiss and coleslaw. This sandwich changed my life and perspective about NY deli sandwiches. The pizza here was delicious. There are a lot of choices offered. I got sausage, pepperoni, and sautéed onion. The sausage is crumbled style. My slice was $3.75 but it's a really large slice. Four stars isn't relative to all Deli-sandwich places everywhere, but relative to the often depressing fare available in Penn Station, definitely a worthy cut above average. They are very fast and efficient, and the sandwiches are decent, and there's a good variety of beverages. They've got three high-top tables with two seats each if you're looking for a place to sit down to eat. It's a little hard to find because it's around the corner from the main Amtrak waiting area, but look for it at the end of the lines for the 283 train at 4/5 east boarding area. read more

Who knew you could find a fresh deli sandwich in the depths of penn station. This is one of my favorite delis in nyc. They obviously serve boars head which is the golden standard when it comes to deli meat and serve it on classic hoagie bread. They should call this place Don Disgusting. These are the times I wish there was a zero stars or a negative stars button. I came by before leaving on a day trip to Boston. I understand that this is deli and I'm at Penn Station...however I would have done better at the Dunkin Dounuts. 1. The pasta salad looked like it had been sitting there for days...and it tasted that way as well. The broccoli that I think was supposed to be green (or at one point it maybe was green) However today it was this rotten colour or a very pale pale green with a little brownish bits for texture. Don Pepi's really deserves 5 stars - not because it's the best deli ever, but because it really truly is the best option in Penn Station. Don Pepi's deli is the ONLY place in Penn Station where you can get a normal sandwich made to order. Shocking, isn't it? Above ground, I think of the deli sandwich as being an essential part of NYC but go down an escalator or two and all bets are off. I got turkey and cheese on rye and a cup of tea.
