This place has old-age diner food with good service but nothing really stood out. I tried Bobbie's artichoke and tomato benedict, added bacon and a side of hash browns as well as biscuits and gravy. Benedict was ok. The eggs were poached good and the hollandaise sauce was creamy but the rest of the dish was bland. The muffins on the bottom were burned at the edges, hash browns had no flavor and were mushy on the bottom and the canned taste of artichokes was hard to hide. I have to say that adding bacon helped out. Biscuits themselves were ok and the gravy was on the lighter side, though I found it to be very sugar sweet and couldn't eat a lot of it. Service was friendly and quick but the request for well-done hash browns was returned with mush on my plate. II doubt I'd come back here. read more

The waffle was like any waffle you make at a hotel brunch -- our waitress made it, not the cooks. Sausage patty was really the only good thing. Egg whites and hash browns were both flavorless. The home fries were disgusting. Tasted like boiled potatoes with no seasoning. They were both overboiled and underfried. The coffee smelled and tasted like burnt water. Today was the first time my husband and I decided try it out. This is a great local spot. I tried the San Diego Style breakfast and my husband had the Two Eggs Any Style breakfast. The fruit was fresh, hash browns and English muffins were perfectly toasted, coffee was freshly brewed and our cup was always filled. They have an amazingly delicious, homemade, custom salsa which I hope they name soon. With the friendly service and delicious food, I will definitely be returning for more. read more

Really, a 3.5 if I could. Their "raved-about" (on reviews) homemade hollandaise sauce is very strange and clearly not REAL hollandaise. It has such a weird taste and texture that I'm disappointed in reviewers, but most do not know what REAL hollandaise IS! I found it very distasteful when tasting it from a tiny sample I requested, which they cheerfully provided. (This is a common complaint of mine in most any review of a breakfast place that advertises REAL, homemade, hollandaise.) It rarely, rarely IS. Anyway, the rest of the breakfasts in my group were receiving good reviews, hence my 3-stars. I had the chicken friend steak and it was good, a solid 3-star. The mashed potatoes were REAL and pretty good, too. We will come back and our service was commendable, too. We had a nice, leisurely Saturday morning breakfast here in Carlsbad Village area of Carlsbad. it's north of San Diego on the way to LA. It's even convenient to a beach. They have outdoor tables on the sidewalk too. Good hash browns and waffles. I had an Kielbasa scramble that was loaded with sausage, cheese, and mushrooms. My soon had a classic waffle that was kinda heavy but very good. We read about this place on Yelp and decided to go there today. We were instantly greeted and got coffee which was great. We both ordered Omelets with hash browns and biscuits. The Omelets are huge and everything in them is so fresh. Ours were bursting with jack cheese bacon spinach and so good. Someone knows how to cook back there. It's a bit off a side street in Carlsbad away from the over populated Carlsbad village. I've come here for the breakfast. They do breakfast right. Food wise: I've had the Spanish omelette but I'm sure all the other ones are just as good. This was made to perfection. The hash browns were crispy. Just how I like it. The portion size was huge and filled me up and I only ate half. Ambience: it's a diner with a country feel. Service: The waitress was fast and got us in and out to enjoy our day. I am very pleased with Don's Country Kitchen. Everything was superb. We came on a Saturday morning around 10 am and we waited a total of 1 minute to be seated outside. Considering we are in coast highway on a Saturday morning that was amazing!!! Joyce was very pleasant and very funny made us feel comfortable right away. The guy who took our drink order was also very nice and very welcoming. Our service overall was OUTSTANDING!!! The food was also very good!! My husband had a Bloody Mary that was delicious just the right amount of spice and vodka, I had one of their specials the stuffed hash browns with bacon, spinach, avocado, cheese, and mushrooms. So, there are two Don's kitchens. Made the mistake of coming here instead of the other location; the other location has mimosas. This one does NOT. They do not claim to, however the other location did, I assumed they would be the same. It was a Saturday am at around 10:30am. We waiting for about 10 min, if that. Got a table inside. Service was excellent. Like, really really great. Everyone is happy to help and happy to be there. The food is Pretty good. I love using Yelp in unfamiliar cities. This was a nice quick walk from Stay America and a great price for great food. The biscuits gravy had onion in them I think so they were a little different than I'm used to, but they were pretty good. The biscuits were a little doughy, but not bad. I loved that when I ordered my hash browns and bacon on the crispy side they were actually crispy! They are super dog friendly and brought my dog water and didn't flinch when I ordered her scrambled eggs. Outdoor seating was chill and a couple locals were there so that's always a treat! Small and authentic diner layout. There is a variety of seating, tables, bar or outdoor. Parking is a bit tight, but there's multiple public parking lots near by. It's close to the beach too, witch makes it even better. Not your "basic" Denise/ IHOP place. First was introduce to this little gem in downtown Carlsbad. The establishment gives a warm hearty feel. I always order the waffle with nuts and bananas -good portion and price is descent and let's not forget my cup of coffee( that never goes empty). We found Don's a few years ago and fell in love. Everything is so tasty. My favorite is the stuffed hash browns, without the egg on top. I don't like eggs so I love having a choice of other things. Came here on a Sunday morning basically because it was the only restaurant around that was open and didn't have a 45-60 minute wait for breakfast. My bf and I stayed overnight in Carlsbad for a wedding and we didn't like the hotel breakfast so at 9am we were on the hunt for something else. The restaurant is quaint and cute. It was confusing when we entered since no one greeted us and there was no obvious hostess stand. We were not sure if we were supposed to seat ourselves or what to do. After seeing the confused look on our faces one of the other customers told us there was a red sign in sheet that we need to put our name on for a table. The wait to be seated was no longer than 10 minutes. As for the food, I wasn't overly impressed. I ordered the avocado-bacon benedict which sounds like it can't go wrong, but it wasn't that great. The hollendaise sauce was not very tasteful, it was pretty bland. The hash browns were very very greasy, they were almost inedible. The coffee was good and they offer free refills. Came here for brunch and sat outside which was nice. Wish they had mimosa flights like the other Don's in Oceanside but sadly they did not which was a bummer. My boyfriend had the stuffed hash browns which was bomb! It had cheese, gravy, and sausage in it with eggs on top and it was really good and HUGE! I had the corned beef hash which was good- also a full plate. I ordered a side of avocado to offset the beef and egg which was nice because it added a creamy flavor to the dish. We split the coffee cake as a dessert and it tasted great with the coffee. Overall, it was a nice brunch, it's a very diner and homestyle type of cooking. The food was very delicious (though the house fries are a little bland for my taste despite the fact that they have bell peppers and onions in them- fools gold), The prices are pretty good, there are plenty options, and the service is really good, too.
