The glazed donuts are fantastic. This donut has a sole. It has texture and perfectly sweet. A little chewy even. Its a great bite. Not a huge fan of the chocolate they use. For the chocolate covered donuts. But that is fine....I will have the glazed and be happy as a clam. I tried their kolaches. They are good but a little too much bread. Needs more meat or less bread, I think. But they are good and I would get them again. I tried the tacos. Not a fan. The cheese they use tastes like a really cheap cheese. I am guessing Easy Melt from HEB. I did like the meat to egg ratio in the tacos though. The cheese really turned me off though. I had to throw them away. I would definitely get them again if there was a no cheese option or if they used a better cheese. This review is rated on the donut. They are a donut shop and they make damn good donuts. I realize you might be distracted by the nearby Shipley's, or you might feel that a Krispy Kreme would be more predictable in quality. Or, you know, just for convenience's sake, you could get your doughnuts at HEB, because you need to stop in there for Tilex anyway. My bf is from Houston and always complains about the lack of Shipleys in Austin. He loves them for having good Donuts AND good kolaches, not one or the other... So, in the past when he had a donut AND kolache craving we would have a stop at Kens donuts and then Kolache factory to fill his needs. After our move to slightly north-er Austin, we drove by Donut Crown and stopped in. Much to our happy surprise Donut Crown offers a yummy selection of both. And with a pretty fair amount of variety in the kolache fillings and of different donuts. Everything we've tried has been good. Like other have said, its a small little store and not a lot to look at inside. But, the ladies working are always nice and even with a long weekend line, things move fast. This place saves my life every Saturday morning (especially after meetin happy hours). It is about 5 minutes from my place and I still want to speed there to get my usual jalapeno and cheese kolache, pig in a blanket and a bag of donut holes. It is the perfect breakfast for watching sucky Saturday morning cartoons. The two young ladies who work at the counter provide super fast service and are always willing to warm up your purchases. I imagine that the rest of the donuts they have are good too, but I can never get over wanting my usual order to try something different. So I have to take a moment and thank the wonderful yelpers that informed me of this place. In searching for new places near my house I found the wonderful Donut Crown. After visiting this place once, I have determined one thing: If you're in the mood for a very unhealthy but delicious breakfast, this is THE place to go. The donuts are light and fluffy, the kolaches seem to have the perfect texture, and above all they seem to have spicy versions of their sausage kolaches. Must have gone at the wrong time, at -- you know, 6 am. It was empty, the donuts and kolaches were cold, they were out of milk, and the one gal working wasn't interested in helping us learn about what was good or fresh. Now I understand. NOTHING was good. After 15+ years of supporting this business I'm done. Never been treated like this before I've literally bought thousands of donuts from this shop. They are in my neighborhood . Several weeks ago I went in and bought 6 doughnut , the young woman never took her ear buds out and had to ask me several times what I wanted. When I got home I realized she had shorted me 2 chocolate donuts that she had put in a second bag. No big deal Today I went in and nicely informed the same young woman that she had given me an incomplete order the last time I was in. She loudly said No ! I then told her it was hard to forget since she was on her cell phone during the whole transaction . She then told me it wasn't her and that she was on vacation 3 weeks ago. Are you kidding me ? Oh my, Donut Crown, how do I love thee? You are still my favorite donut shop in town, even with some new contenders. I love their variety, not only in donuts but kolaches. I love the fact that they are always open super early so I can stop there on way to work or very early on a weekend when the toddlers have woken us up. My kids (and me) love the flavored iced donuts-maple, strawberry, vanilla, chocolate-they are all yummy and delicious. The cake and regular donuts all taste great. I love the chocolate donut with glaze. And the fritters are the absolute best in town, hands down, no matter what the flavor (cherry, apple or oddly delicous banana!). The kolaches are tasty too and there is always a good selection of milk/juice in case and the coffee is passable, not great, for a donut shop. The lady who ALWAYS works at the counter is so dang nice and it is always tidy and clean in there. Our kids love choosing donuts and sitting in the shop so that says something. I don't know what makes this place so fantastic. It has a cute vibe, one that's not easy to pin down to a word. The raspberry jelly donut is divine - I don't know what makes it so delicious. But it's tart, fresh, and extremely messy if you don't eat with caution (finally, a place that doesn't skimp on the jelly!!!) The kolaches are good, but my personal favorite has to be the strawberry cream cheese croissant. It is flaky, warm, and each bite is a little different - lots of jelly/little cream cheese, lots of cream cheese/little jelly - but they're ALL good. Amazing cake donuts as well. I just got back from Donut Crown and am making a pig of myself as I write this. I appreciated the fast and friendly service which is exactly how others on Yelp described it -- quiet. Because I really don't need to know half of someone's cell conversation or all of a live convo. The donut holes, I kid you not, melt in your mouth. The maple donut is...ahhh...mapley, crispy, sticky, and sweet. Sweet without that Krispy Kreme cavity overload. Also without that Krispy Kreme uniform structure. On an economic note, my Donut Crown breakfast was fairly inexpensive. 99 cent donut holes and a 59 cent maple donut. And there is a ton of donut holes in that little bag. The only thing lacking was a cherry-iced donut. I have yet to find one of those ever again. read more

Austin's dirty secret is its severe deficiency in donut shops. I'm not just talking about Shipley's here. I've lived in cities where there were Dunkin' Donuts on practically every corner. So, moving to Austin was a huge donut disappointment to me. That is, until we moved near Donut Crown. It doesn't have Dunkin' Donuts coffee, but it *does* have kolaches, which more than meet my native Texan standards. The plain glazed are the perfect level of sweet for my not-so-sweet tooth, and the coffee isn't bad. There isn't a whole lot of seating room, but I just always take my donuts home anyway. And have I mentioned the price? I got half a dozen donuts and two kolaches for just under $7 today. (And then my husband blew the rest of our cash on Magic cards, much to my dismay.) read more

First Donut-Day of the new year! Not a part of town that would normally be on my radar for my monthly fried dough indulgence, but I was in the area and Donut Crown emerged victorious in the battle for my business. I arrived around 8:00ish on a Saturday morning. There was one person enjoying their goodies in the shop, but no other customers otherwise. I selected an apple fritter, a glazed old-fashioned, and an eclair/long john. Total was $3.56 I was pleased! I took everything back to the house, and enjoyed the eclair that morning. I absolutely LOVED that it was about half the size of a normal eclair. I could eat the whole thing with my eggs without feeling like I was going to explode. I sampled the other two that day as well, but planned to finish them later. The fritter reheated well in the toaster oven, and was on par with my favorite fritter from a shop off Metric. Alas, the old-fashioned remained lonely until Tuesday morning, at which point I polished that one off without too much trouble. read more

I agree with all of the reviews below! I went their today to get a dozen donuts and some kolaches! The total with tax was ten dollars but I got a dozen mixed donuts, and three very large kolaches! The donuts had a light, sugary, not at all greasy taste, and I liked them way better than something like Krispy Kreme or even Dunkin' because they all taste of pure sugar now, but on these, you could actually taste the flavor of what you were eating. The plain glazed were perfection. They have interesting kinds, like iced devil's food cake, chocolate glazed, sour cream, chocolate and nut dipped, cinnamon and sugar, plain cake, chocolate cake, and there were tons that we did not even get to try but hopefully will get to someday. I was in and out of there very quickly, parking was easy, and the sweet lady kindly advised me that everything there is made fresh every day. She offered to heat the kolaches, but since I had a ways to drive, she told me just to heat them up individually in the microwave for 20-30 seconds and voila! Done! She was right. I confess. I have never been inside this store. My boyfriend, you see, he works nights and gets off around 6. Oftentimes, as a way of spoiling grateful and thankful me, he'll go and get some things to surprise me with for breakfast that will make the painful act of waking up in the morning easier for me. Oh, poor me. :) Anyway, he'll usually grab me a kolache or a cinnamon roll to which I roll out of bed less grumbly and more happily for. In exchange, I wake up quicker and he gets to spend some time with me before he has to go to bed. YAY for everyone! The Kolaches are wrapped in this really light airy dough. It's good, with sweet undertones. The cinnamon roll, I suspect, is made with the same dough. It's freshly coated in a layer of their glaze and what I love about it is that it's crisp in the only way really good donuts are made. The true test, folks, is not when the donut is hot. Any donut is good hot. The kicker is when it's cooled off and if it's still got that crispness that only freshly made yeast bread has before it's glazed off. I know. I have developed a love for Donut Crown. First let me say that there are not very many donut places open before 6am! I was very excited that Donut Crown was open at 5am! I had to be at work early and wanted to take donuts to my students. We stopped at Donut Crown and I was mesmerized by the lovely looking display of donuts and croissants. I had a tough time deciding what to get but I decided to get a sausage and cheese croissant and the chocolate eclair! Both were heavenly and tasted as good as they looked. It was a cold January morning. I drove up the unassuming North Burnet industrial corridor. My ultimate destination was Donut Crown, a local fried-breakfast-good institution, which cranks out a large variety of the unhealthy goodness. I also needed gas. Why not fuel up my stomach and my automobile's tank? Phillip needs sustenance as well, though I am certain that gas in a car is healthier than donuts are for my stomach. Prepped with low blood sugar, which was induced by a night of slumber, I was prepared to indulge in a few well-selected offerings. I drove down the street to enjoy a couple bites as I pumped fuel into Phillip, and as I reached into my bag, I was frustrated that I could not remember whether I ordered a banana or apple fritter. I guess with such a sweet, moist, crumbly item, it is hard to even taste the distinction of an extract. The devil's food cake donut was honestly the best cake-style donut that I have had. It had a nice cocoa nuance without too much sweetness or chocolate excess. The dense, moist (is that an oxymoron for a foodstuff?) interior was awesome. Heck, even the glaze possessed the perfect amount of sweetness. The crumb twist was one of the most tender donuts that I have ever had. It ripped apart into pretty much flour and butter again. Many a twist that I have sampled have far too dense a dough along with an abundance of glaze. The one here was simply just perfectly molded dough topped with a healthy sprinkling of "crumb." I love this place. A long-time Austinite recently told me I HAD to go to Howdy Donuts if I wanted a real donut. We'd been going to Donut Crown and were pretty happy, but there was such overwhelming positive feedback about Howdy that I thought maybe we were missing out. So we went to Howdy, and were pretty disappointed in the quality of the product, the variety, and especially the service. And we went back to Donut Crown and were extremely happy. They don't skimp on filling. The service is fast and friendly. They have great variety. And the donuts & croissants taste awesome. I'm not a donut snob. Maybe I just have plebian tastes, but I'm more than OK with that if that means I can easily & cheaply find something I really like without waiting 20 minutes in line, only to be disappointed (I'm talking to YOU, Howdy!). I'm not saying my long-time Austinite friend was wrong; I think she's had some really fond memories of sucking down those Howdy donuts on lazy weekend mornings, and the hype machine doesn't hurt. But as someone who is a relatively new transplant and just looking for a good donut on a lazy Sunday, I'm proud to be a Donut Crown fan. read more

I might need an intervention from this place!! The donuts are light and fluffy and the kolaches and croissants are stuffed, not lacking in ingredients. They have a large variety of donuts and drinks. The staff is very friendly and patient, the place is very clean and doesn't smell of old donut grease/oil. Plenty of parking. I'm very picky when it comes to donuts and this place has won me over. We bought 1 ham and cheese kolache, 2 ham and cheese croissants- one with jalapeño, 2 chocolate iced donuts, 1 coconut covered donut, 1 chocolate iced and custard filled long donut, 1 raspberry filled donut and 1 banana fritter, all for $13! read more
