Have you ever wanted genuine New Orleansy food, nothing too fancy, you have guests you want to treat and they don't have expensive taste, but you still want to have a clean, somewhat upscale, fun environment? Well then Dooky Chase's is for you. It's such a fun restaurant. The waiters are relaxed and candid yet with formal attire and courteousness. For example when we asked about one of the dishes, the waiter just said "it's all right". When you got that much honesty, it's a good culture. Their menu is filled with New Orleans classics. I just had to get the fried chicken even if it was dinnertime but I supplemented it with the side of jambalaya and a cup of crab soup. I got to pick dark meat against white meat and when I picked dark meat I expected to get a thigh and two drumsticks but I got two thighs which was a nice surprise. Everything was tasty and down to earth. No fancy ingredients, just good old New Orleans cooking. Now once all that is in, we have to talk about the price. It is definitely somewhat elevated due to the tourist appeal / New Orleans cooking appeal. So be ready for that. I would say this is a place you should try once, expect to dish out some money, but bring good company, and you won't regret it. I've heard that there are many people who make this place a regular thing but I just feel like it shouldn't cost so much for what it is. Dooky Chase's storied reputation made it a must-stop on my trip to New Orleans, and I'm glad it was. Not only to honor Leah Chase, but to honor everything this restaurant stands for. And because I really liked the food. I went for the lunch buffet and quite enjoyed it. It's reasonably priced and has a variety of offerings, and I'd stick to that. I went with the greens, fried chicken, red beans and rice, and salad. The soup was chicken vegetable and the dessert was peach cobbler. The greens and fried chicken were great. I could barely eat and still had to get seconds. The chicken vegetable soup was extremely fresh. And the peach cobbler was rich and flavorful, and one of my favorite versions. The decor is is nice, but worn. The artwork is great. The hostesses are insanely nice and friendly--I tried to be as nice to them as they were to me. My server was good, but I experienced what others have--she disappeared. And when I needed hot sauce it was a while before I saw anyone on the floor that I could flag. So service could definitely be more attentive. I arrived around 11:40 on a Wednesday, and in about ten minutes, Dooky's was packed, so that seems to be the right time to arrive. Went to legendary Lisa chase restaurant in New Orleans , hard to get a reservation. We walked in and see a handwritten sign for their dress code. Which when we made reservations was not mentioned. The art in this place is amazing , and the bathroom is beautiful. They placed us in a party room since we were a large table I'm guessing. There was another party with kids crying and stomping. PLEASE MAKE A RESERVATION. I absolutely love this restaurant from the red carpet to all the white walls, to include the art hanging on the walls. This was my first time visiting to be honest and I had a wonderful time. They start with taking your temperature at the door of course because of COVID. Second if you don't have a reservation please make one because you will definitely be turned away because of the limitations on seating due to COVID. Food- the Chicken Creole was great and seasoned very well. Some say it was salty but it was just right for me. Don't sleep on this meal. Shrimp Clemenceau wasn't to tasteful to me. The potatoes could've been seasoned a lot more and I also hate green peas. No refill on the lemonade that was oh so marvelous. That garic and butter bread is the bomb. Crawfish etouffe was pretty good. My fiancée enjoyed his chicken creole; mother in law enjoyed the crab cake and friend green tomato; and my bonus daughter enjoyed her fried chicken and fries. Quintessential New Orleans restaurant that's been around since 1941, and now run by the charming Mrs. Leah Chase. It's a favorite stomping ground for politicians, musicians, celebrities and even Presidents. It was also featured in the Disney movie, the Princess and the Frog. Be prepared to wait in line with many eager people, but the line moves pretty quickly and totally worth the wait. There's a dress code to adhere to the family environment. Once you walk in you feel like you've stepped back in time. The decor feels like dated yet home with tall ceilings and white pillars. The smell of that delicious food hits you the second you walk in and the temptation to get started immediately is hard to resist. You can order a la carte, but why would you do that when you can get the buffet and try a little, or a lot, of everything for around $20. You get the soup of the day, the buffet and a dessert. You will not leave hungry, I guarantee you! Once in line you can start with a salad, but who wants to fill up on that honestly?? I went straight for the butter beans and rice, the jambalaya with shrimp granny I, the mirliton stuffing, the whole fried catfish, the hot sausage, and of course their famous fried chicken! The gumbo here was phenomenal; it was easily the best gumbo that I've ever had. The soup was well-balanced, not at all salty. The spiciness and depth of the flavor of the soup paired well with the rice and generous heap of sausage and chicken. Some points of improvement, I would have liked more shrimps in the gumbo and the price of $6 was too high for a small cup of gumbo. Overall, it still was a very enjoyable cup of gumbo (4.5/5). My friend got the lunch buffet. He said that the fried chicken was very juicy and flavorful. The meat was tender and moist, contrasting the crispy outside. They are know for their fried chicken here after all. The lunch combo is definitely worth its price for fried chicken lovers. The service and ambience were equally as amazing as the food. Our waitress frequently came by to check on us and tended to our needs. Southern hospitality is very much rooted in the service. I felt bad not eating the buffet because of how worried the waitress was that I only had the gumbo. She also brought me a complimentary serving of peach cobbler, which was supposed to be part of the lunch buffet only. I can understand why this place is a lengendary and local favorite. The absolute worst customer service ever. The room was too small for our party but they really tried to accommodate the miscalculation of expected guests but not without attitude; refusing to allow us to sit on furniture that was completely unused because it was "antiques" that had a nasty liquid dripping platter on the chair. We were not allowed to order anything extra food-wise in a restaurant! We had a pre-set menu tried to add a side w/a protein. Couldn't mix that dish so we requested to order a serving of their prized Mac & cheese - we were told that couldn't be done either. 2 plates were held for 2 of our guests until they were in their seats. We were over 50 yrs of age I think we can hold a plate, until our chair was free, since we couldn't sit on the antique furniture. It was 1 silly issue after another and then told they were disappointed in us! The Tracy person lets u know in no uncertain terms, she is stressed and no preferential treatment is given regardless of the circumstance. It is business as usual. Def try the food but I suggest u take it to go, if u have contested exceptions, changes and have flexibility because days of operation is at their whim. Man, I really hate to leave this place a bad review... I was really looking forward to the experience of eating at such a storied establishment with such great food. We had a reservation, and got seated and got water quickly. And then... tick tock tick tock... No one "willingly" came to take our order for over 35 minutes. Not drinks, not bread, not "I'll be with you in a second." Not anything. At one point I noticed the guy at the table next to us pointing at us and saying something to the waitress. He was apparently telling her we needed help. When she left, he said to us "I can see you guys have been waiting a long time, I know the feeling." Still... that guy ended up paying his bill and leaving & wishing us the best of luck and that waitress still hadn't even made eye contact with us. I finally had to stand between the kitchen and the waitress to ask her to PLEASE take our order. I will say she was gracious once I begged her for help, but damn... Anyway, long story short, after all that she took our order and then my husband never got his meal. She never came by to make sure we were ok, to ask if we needed anything (like a whole missing meal) while she carefully set a table behind us with linens and silverware for 15 minutes. Maybe it was an off night. Our waitress did say (when I literally grabbed her and begged her to help us) that she didn't know who our server was. So I hate to even give her a hard time if she picked up a table she wasn't supposed to have - but the breakdown here was atrocious. Someone should have been assigned our table. But then again, the guy next to us told her we had been waiting, pointed at us and everything, and she didn't come by and ask if we were ok, if we'd been helped, didn't tell anyone we needed help... I had to chase her down to get our order taken. it was a pretty bad failure of communication all around. Really disappointed because I was really looking forward to the experience, and it was... not that. The fried chicken that we did get was great. That's the only reason this is a 2 star review instead of a 1. Sorry Dooky Chase. You let us down on our vacation. You can do better. read more

If you are looking for a place to have a great dining experience this is the place for you. We were in NO in October 2020 in the middle of COVID19 and had the best dinner. The staff there was so kind and pleasant to us. The food was good from the first bite to the last one. I love crab cakes and fried green tomatoes and these were seasoned to perfection. The chicken was seasoned and crispy that I could not get enough. The cheesiest mac and cheese I have had in a restaurant. The greens were seasoned like they were cooked at home. Dooky Chase is hands-down heaven in a plate. We went there for early morning and were one of the first parties to be sat. We had a larger table and definitely shared a lot of great food. One of my favorites was the shrimp Clemenceau. From the crispy potatoes to tender peas and mushrooms, then the buttery shrimp I would come back to New Orleans just for this dish. I'm very sad that I didn't get to order some of the mac & cheese because my friend literally talked about it all weekend. Apparently it was filled with garlicky goodness. Another can't miss hit was the Fried chicken. It was one of the best things I had. But better not skip out on the gumbo either. I'm basically saying you need to order the whole menu. The food was good but the service was literally probably the worse service I have ever experienced, not exaggerating! I literally could of gotten better service at Denny's. First, I made a reservation online but the system did not register it( which they said can happen), so my husband and I had to wait for over an hour. Then they brought us bread but it was so little we asked for more and it was never given because the kitchen wasn't making anymore. They forgot to bring us one of our appetizers and we literally asked for it twice and they finally brought it well after we ate our first appetizer. Then my husband ordered the Ribeye steak, brought out the steak but completely forgot his side baked potato. I asked to speak to the manger and we waited for like 15 mins after we paid and she never came, so we left. Very disappointing for such an iconic restaurant and reading other bad reviews I realized they don't care. The food was completely excellent. I had the stuffed shrimp and gumbo and it was full of flavor. My palate danced at each bite. The service and the staff were superior as well. With something as simple as water, my glass stayed full. I had a Grand D. ( aka ole fashioned) made to perfection. My wife had a grand mimosa which she loved. Management checked in regularly. On my trip to New Orleans, I had to go here! I had heard from other people and reviews that the service is slow with limited staffing. The waitress/ waiters did great trying to balance everything they had to do. Yes, it could have been a tad quicker but honestly, my husband and I just enjoyed slowing down for once and really enjoying the atmosphere of this wonderful place. The gumbo is to die for!! Our waitress was a lil slow but like I said her service wasn't bad, mainly due to another large table of about 7 she was attending to. I got the lavender Lemonade (alcoholic) to try and it was pretty good. Definitely tasted the lavender, couldn't "taste" the alcohol but it was in there. But I'd be careful with it if you not a drinker. I got the gumbo to try as an app because I heard it was pretty good. It was good but I was expecting a lot more from the way ppl talk about it. We also got some lil garlic breads to eat on as well. Once the food came out it was time to get down! Them stuffed shrimps was really good! The tarter sauce too! I'd definitely get it again. Was in NOLA for a conference and was so excited to try gumbo. Tried multiple places and was lacking. Came to Dooky Chase's and they redeemed the gumbo and took out all competition. It was incredible!!!! A bunch of us shared some dishes and the salad with pecans was so delish. Chicken was great but the Mac and cheese sent me into a food coma! The bread pudding was legendary. I'm not a beans and rice girl but even that was good. The staff are super friendly. Make a reservation ! Also, I am a sweet tea girl but even I could appreciate why they don't serve it. (Ms Chase didn't drink it) The lemonade was a perfect replacement. It's a beautiful place with a lot of history so bring your manners. This iconic restaurant is an important part of the city of New Orleans. The chefs, waiting staff and reception people are just wonderful! The Chase family are still represented when you come to visit. I've been bringing people from out-of-town to Dooky Chase on a regular basis. (And, by the way, they made my birthday very memorable.) But, unfortuantely, the "typical tourist" mostly see other restaurants on travel sites that are inferior and over-priced. (What's up with that?) This spot was recommended by our taxi driver who gave us great advice and knowledge of places to eat. We arrived and had a 15 20 minute wait. Not too bad as the place wasn't super packed. The buffet lunch was the way 4 out of 6 of us went. They had salad, red beans and rice, sweet potatoes, sausage, ribs, green beans and fried chicken. Then they bring a vegetable soup and dessert. Took away a star because our waitress was not all there. She didn't ask us what we wanted to drink nor for a refill once we got the drinks. My children and I are here visiting from NYC and we were BEYOND excited to actually get a chance to visit this AMAZING city before they start school as a family vacation. Everyone we encountered in the city said that we had to try Dooky's before we head back home, because the food and service was unmatched. Not to be missed they all said. 1. We attempted to call before we arrived to no avail because no one answered after numerous tries. 2. When we arrived, my daughter walked up to the hostess station where the host was standing not too far off from the hostess stand but didn't bother to acknowledge her. I then walked up and greeted the hostess very warmly and with a huge smile... just happy to be there at such a historic landmark for the community. I was greeted very dryly with an attitude as if to hint at I was annoying her. I dismissed it because I've always learned, matching people's negative energy is a waste of time. Especially as it pertains to customer service. I proceeded to give her the correct spelling and the pronunciation of my name. She said it would be about a 22 min wait. We happily agreed. This was at 1:30pm. 3. About 30 mins later the the same hostess emerged and looked at me and then shouted for "Kamal" a few times until my oldest daughter corrected her, to which she responded "whatever the name is". This was intentional for the simple fact I shared with her when we first arrived the correct pronunciation of my name. Names are as important as good customer service. We recognized this might be the start of a bad experience but decided to follow her into the dining room anyway because we didn't want to let 1 employee ruin our experience that we have come so far for. 4. The server BJ was nice enough but didn't appear to be very enthusiastic or attentive. She took our drink orders and promised to bring us some bread. It took about 20 ish minutes for her to bring the drinks. From that point we waited for over an hour. 5. During this hour, we waiting patiently with just our soft drinks to keep us company... we had to find ways to make time go by faster so we started researching the history of the restaurant and much to our surprise the extremely rude hostess is actually a part of the Dooky family. Tracie. She appears to be either a daughter or the wife of the son, either way... utterly shocking that we would have that kind of interaction with someone who by default should be more hospitable to their customers just because it's their family business. Also, during this painfully long wait, we were able to see firsthand that a table that was sat 5 mins before us and 2 tables that were sat 20 mins after us all receive their food before us. I know what you're probably thinking at this point... however, we all ordered the exact same thing. The patrons that came in after us, sat right behind us. We finally flagged down our server BJ and expressed to her our frustration about such an extended wait but also point out to her that the tables right before and after us are well into their meals... her response was even more shocking then finding out the hostess is a descendant of the original owner... "different pieces of chicken take about 30 mins to cook". Maybe, we would've believed this tall tale if the tables behind us didn't order the exact pieces of chicken that we did. She left to supposedly go check on our food and never came back. My daughter had to go find her. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that I do believe this was very intentional by Tracie, the hostess because of the initial exchange when we arrived to when she purposely mispronounced my name.
