The Cinnamon Roll. We drive through Wilmington on our way to New England to visit family, and this was the first time we stopped at Dot's. It was early morning, and as soon as we opened the door, the friendly woman at the counter warmly greeted us like we were locals. She asked if we wanted to sit in a booth or at the counter, and when we explained that we were just passing through and wanted something to go, she handed us a menu and gave us a few minutes. Then she walked back over to us and said, "Get the cinnamon roll." Having had many cinnamon rolls in my lifetime, I wasn't convinced, especially when I looked back at the menu for a wordy description of it only to find the humble two-word "Cinnamon Roll" listing under the Quick Breads section. She must have read the look on my face because she guessed that we had never eaten it before and then went on to explain how it was prepared: a homemade, hot cinnamon roll, fried on their griddle with butter and topped with a generous amount of sweet glaze. They sell out of it quickly, and I can see why! We got two, planned on splitting half of one (they're huge), and ended up sitting in the car eating the whole thing before we even started the engine! Can a cinnamon roll be both super-soft-melt-in-your-mouth AND buttery crispy at the same time? Yes ma'am. It was pure heaven. Get the cinnamon roll, no matter what you stop at Dot's for! read more

My family and I tried Dots for dinner when staying in a near by town for a night on our way home from Maine. I was the only one at our table of 5 that enjoyed the " award winning" chili but it was definitely not the best I have ever had even by a long shot. Reubens and fries were good but nothing special actually nothing was superior just normal food. Prices were high for the amount and quality. Cozy and friendly, this local spot made a fabulous stop for me and a friend to have a delicious lunch. The cute cherry and polka dot tablecloths adorned a welcoming dining room with picture windows and family photos. The coffee was delicious and fresh. As much as i wanted! A very conveniently located place with crappy service and sub-par food. The waitress asked us about drinks as we were being seated, failed to bring them over, and then asked again when she brought over the menu. When she came to take the order, I attempted to get a Boston omelet (tomato, onion, ham) with mushrooms and cheese (fine print under the listing of omelet specials offers a selection of extras), to which she snapped, "That's not a Boston omelet, what do you want in it?" Now, I hate to pull the "customer is always right" card, but the customer is always right, so there's no need to make me feel incompetent when I'm doing my best working with the very limited menu. We went to Dot's after a long day of skiing and it hit the spot! It was the perfect comfort food. We each had a cup of chili that was SO delicious and fresh tasting- it had a great smoky flavor and a bit of a kick. The homemade French fries were also out of this world!! Incredible food, a beautiful interior, and an absolutely amazing staff all amount to one of the best breakfasts I have ever had in my life. With superb award-winning chili, moist french toast, spot-on eggs, and definitely some of the best pancakes I have ever eaten in my life, Dot's is a must-stop for any food lovers passing through the state. Ok, where do I start? First of all, our waitress Cindy was amazing and worked hard to serve us quickly even though I am pretty sure she was like the only waitress in the whole restaurant at the time. As for food, the Berry Berry Pancakes here are utterly amazing. Moist, with an almost bruleed top leading to a reservoir of juicy berries at the bottom of each pancake. Served with real maple syrup, the pancakes have a hint of nutty toasted corn meal in the batter and are definitely some of the finest you can snag in the state. I think even the New York Times mentioned how awesome they are. Their chili has won numerous awards and I can see why, it is flavorful, deep, smoky, complex, and very awesome. It is marked all over the menu as "spicy" but I found it to be pretty mild. I think this might just be because I had the morning batch, made for the omelets. That brings me to the eggs. They are amazing, perfectly cooked and incredibly delicious. Also they are served with a homemade bread (get the the cinnamon raisin!!) that is so, so, so good. They could charge a lot just for this amazing bread but they just give it to you on the side of your eggs like it isn't even a big deal. So yeah, trust me when I say this place is awesome. I have not yet been here for lunch or dinner but please believe me when I say that, when it comes to breakfast at least, this is about as good as it gets. read more

Don't believe the hype. This place is the only game in town and they know it. Most of the staff is friendly but we had the nastiest waitress on the planet and after a thirty minute wait and another twenty five to get our food it was pretty disappointing. The waitress had an attitude as soon as my mother in-law ask for a substation because of a food allergy and it the food was bland and really a let down. A group of us were in town for the weekend and we came in and had breakfast which was wonderful as it always is at Dots so we decided to try and do takeout for dinner for the first time. One person in our party is what we call a "picky vegetarian" so with the little bit of options for a vegetarian for dinner there we decided to call and inquire about what is in the pasta primavera...the girl who answered the phone was extremely rude and advised us to "hold on, we're very busy" as we heard her in the backround tell someone to get on the phone and tell us what was in the dish, in which he told her that they weren't busy and she can get back on the phone and tell us herself...which we heard on our side of the line and it rubbed us the wrong way. We decided what we wanted to order and called the restaurant again and got the same person (as I assume) and the tone was the same, as if we were bothering her and that our business was not wanted. read more

We were there for breakfast and tried: Cinnamon roll - fine. nice because in the world of cinnamon rolls, it had a pretty nicely balanced sweetness. I may get it again if Im craving something sweet, but she woudln't. Sausage Gravy & Biscuits - This was really quite good. Almost like sausage dressed in gravy - rather than the typical gravy with some sausage floating in it. The biscuits were on the dry side but...well the gravy helped quite a bit. Sunny eggs still had raw white around the yolks - cook should have scraped off, but I am OK doing it myself. Home fries were crisp, seasoned -really nice. Eggs Benedict - sub Sausage Patty for Canadian Bacon - Really good. Hollandaise nice - eggs poached perfectly, dried off before building the Benedict - so the sauce did not break and nothing was soggy. Sausage patty was really good in place of the Canadian Bacon...not something I have tried before, but will again. This place is essentially exactly what I want in a breakfast spot. Slightly dry, but it might have been all the meat they put in it! Veggie Egg-White Omelet - Exactly what I was looking for that morning. Kinda hungry, but it was nice and light with a lot of flavor. Homemade Cinnamon Toast - A MUST!!! LUNCH: Father Salad - Garden salad with Teriyaki chicken. Really tasty and lots of it. My family and I visit Wilmington once a year and are sure so have breakfast here everyday during our stay. We talk about it and dream about it all year long, to the point where we have contemplated driving up from NY (3 hours) just to simply have breakfast here. You'll start your visit with coffee on the porch while you wait for the sweetest man to arrange your table. You'll have a hard time choosing what to order (I'd recommend the Sausage and biscuits or the Cajun skillet) but regardless of what you order you MUST get the homemade toast. Dot's is delicious. The menu's pretty standard for an American diner (chili, milkshakes, chicken fingers, onion rings), but preparation and quality ingredients set this place apart. On a frigid Saturday in December, I was impressed by their chili (wonderful with garlic bread) and the fried clam strips (fresh and tender). The only dish that failed to impress was a cherry crumble for dessert (bit syrupy), but I'd definitely return. read more

There are some places that live up to their reputation. This happens to be one of them. They have battled back from the hurricane and amazing flooding of 2011, and are better than ever. Sure some of the quirky things I grew to love such as the completely sloped floor are gone, but the new Dot's is great. Expanded seating area - bright - clean - etc. If you come at peak time on the weekend, get your name on the list, enjoy a coffee that they provide outside, and anticipate how delicious breakfast is going to be as soon as you can get in. Favorites on the menu for me are the Cajun Skillet, and the banana pancake. The banana pancake isn't quite as legendary or cult followed as the berry-berry, but it's my favorite. Caramelized rings of banana engulfed in batter.....delicious. Served with REAL VT syrup - as it should be. Not in the mood for breakfast, their sandwiches are great also.
