Many of the reviews I've read are either loving this place or hating on this place because it's a dive bar. While it had divey aspects and parts that make it divish, I didn't really feel the euphoria or disdain aspects of the dive bar. It was just a bar. Yes they had some old men in here, but they also had couples. The bathrooms weren't a mess. The drinks were not dive bar priced at all. It was dark, but many bars are. This is a dive bar. And this is where it's at. I strongly recommend The Drawing Room if you are into dive bars because you will feel right at home. I'm discovering all the dive joints in Los Feliz... this one might just take the cake, if only for the fact that it's open at 6AM (!) Now that's some authentic diveiness. Came here at 10AM with some friends and it was dark as a cave and empty... paid $22 for four HUGE tumblers of Bloody Mary-- large glasses filled with ice then filled up halfway with well vodka (generous pour indeed)-- that were damn good. Given the shady surroundings, it's always a delight to get a tasty drink for cheap, and they made this cocktail so right, with real horseradish and Worcester sauce, shaken up and spicy. We all got buzzed and felt pleased with ourselves before returning to the blinding sun of midday. So if you want to drink before a respectable time, this is the place to come... it's so dark, no one will be able to see you to judge. :-) read more

I just love that it opens at 6 a.m., though I've never been there before 7 p.m. I personally think that the drinks are kinda expensive on the dive bar level (meaning it's pretty comparable to what you pay at other places in the area). This place is a dive, in the best sense of the word. Dark, slightly musky, and the heaviest and cheapest pours in the neighborhood. The have a parking lot, super tiny though so it seems like there are never any free spaces when I'm looking to stop in for a beverage. The bartenders can and will make any drink without attitude. Which is usually why I choose to sit at the bar. If I am with a number of friends I will try for a booth, which can be difficult to snag after 8 pm most evenings. At any rate, this bar is definitely one to visit if you happen to find yourself in the neighborhood. read more

Karaoke here on Sundays is one of my favorite things to do. In fact, if I hadn't thrown out my back, I'd probably be there right now. A really fun, young crowd that's not afraid to sing loudly and obnoxiously. Occasionally a "pro" gets up there and puts everyone else to shame with a rendition of "Poker Face". Cash only, and unless you get there early, you probably won't get to sing (there's a long waitlist), and also people's taste in music isn't always the most karaoke friendly (some nights there are lots of songs playing that I've never heard before, and that's no fun). As far as dives go, this is one of my favorites. The fact that I saw Andy Dick get thrown out on his ass the first night I went there could have a little something to do with it. Just to warn ya'll THIS IS A BAR. Like a place where locals meet to "indulge" in sipping the devils nectar (a term my late aunt Solaris used to use) and "hook up" in the bathroom, which is just another way to say sex (I PROMISE it's true I googled it.) It is still unclear how I ended up here seeing as I started the night helping my cousin Aimee with her baby in San Diego. This is a weird but interesting bar. Very mixed crowd. Hit or miss. There is a sign out front announcing that it opens at 6am. I am happy to report I have never seen the crowd that shows up then. Around 7pm you can go in and find local retirees at the bar, chat them up and get their life story. I have met many people here in show biz - including one woman who worked on set and had just gotten back from her dream vacation learning to drive race cars. I have met groups of nurses just off duty from Kaiser Permanente or the Children's hospital 5 blocks away. I have met brilliant, interesting writers. I have seen cute drunks throw themselves at me just before closing time. I have been cornered by strong, silent types who couldn't take a hint. I have met homeless guitarists and quirky introverts who turn out to have huge drug problems. There are always some laddish drunks and the restrooms look pretty beat up. Around 10pm a wave up hipsters usually hits the place and leaves after an hour. White is the most common color of people, but it's definitely mixed - Latino, Pilipino, black. There was a bar tender for several years who looked just like (a younger) Keanu Reeves. And another big, busty, blond who would wear red sparkle lip stick. There's no beer on tap, but the mixed drinks are pretty strong for the price. The jukebox is good. A lot of new and old rock that's not too pop - stuff that's a little rough but easy to roll with. And they have a dart board. My advice - it's good to mix it up here every so often, but being a regular could get scary. read more

The perfect dive - weird art, great music and so dark that you stagger if you walk in out of the sun. Drinks are cheaper than other nearby places, patrons are weird but approachable (if you move slowly at first so as not to startle them.) There are times when you need your 3 best friends, a booth and an excuse to drink at 1 PM. For those times, the Drawing room is perfect. This is totally what it seems to be: a little dive bar. The drinks are cheap, I'm talking a hefty pour for $5-$6 bucks. The only reason it's not a 4-star is because it fills up early and it fills up with half interesting people and half too-cool-for-school types. The diviest of dives, The Drawing Room is a dark space that smells of stale beer from years past, features an old school jukebox and dart board, and is generally super packed with a mix of hipsters and old alcoholics. The cocktails are cheap and STRONG, and that's why I always stick with their G and T's. Their beer selection is paltry and they recently added Lagunitas IPA to their selection, which seemed to be a begrudging concession to the recent craft brew trend. There's nothing flashy or cool about the place (other than the giant dragon mural on the wall) but it's a great place to drink for cheap with friends. First off, the drinks suck. But it's cheap and stiff - as it should be in the dive bar of all dive bars. The beer selection sucks, but it's cheap with good 'ole American swill. Did I mention it's cheap? This is actually not only a good place to drink cheap but a good place to just talk with friends. It isn't too loud and usually not too busy. They even have pizza (yup, it sucks too, but it's cheaper than cheap - it's free!) during Monday Night football, at least as of a year or so ago. But it's not a sports bar so don't go there for football, unless you want to be the only people at the bar watching on a 20" tv. And they have a rivalry with ye rustic inn across the road. Anyone know what it stems from? I've heard it from patrons on both sides of Hillhurst but can never get what it's really about. read more

I know I am echoing a lot of what has already been said, but this place is a great bar for the following reasons: 1. Cheap drinks 2. Strong drinks 3. Friendly bartenders and entertainingly intoxicated patrons 4. Fun and laid-back environment that includes a variety of video games and sports on the TV 5. Cheap and strong drinks A plus side to this bar was that I could actually get a booth with my friends and this was around midnight on a Friday night. We didn't have to hover over anyone hoping they will leave, either. We actually had a choice. For me, this bar kind of has everything for when you just want to hang out with your friends and drink and you hate places that have "house music" blaring and wannabe celebutantes prancing about. Which for me is always, so I'm officially a huge fan. The only downside was the inefficiency in clearing tables of empties. We ended up doing it ourselves because the table was chock full and no one would come clean it, but whatever. It wasn't too big of a deal. This is a good place to end or begin the night, especially if you live in the hood. read more

I am always in search of a good dive bar and The Drawing Room has what it takes. This is the kind of place where you belly up to the bar, get a beer (I don't drink hard liquor, but my friend said they were nice and strong) and have random conversations with the people next you. Everyone there was cool and friendly - there was older people, college kids, a couple crazies and everything in between. The jukebox is decent. Very reasonably priced as are the drinks. This is the first bar I ever legally had a drink in. Years later, I moved down the street and rediscovered this place. It is dark and dingy and when I get home, I always have the overwhelming urge to hop straight into the shower. But hey... this is a dive bar. If you cannot appreciate the idiocy of the giant red dragon painted on the wall and the Mexican freak show with the leopard tats who keeps grabbing your ass while you order tequila shots, then you're probably going to be the one bitching all night if you and your ugly girlfriend decide to try this place out. Anyway, I'm originally from Texas, where a man gets shot for trying to serve a beer for four dollars or more, and this place has CHEAP DRINKS. They are so strong that when I ordered a vodka tonic, it basically had no tonic in it at all. Pretty much everything is three dollars, and where I'm from that's A-OK. Also, if your fat ass gets hungry, there is a taco stand right outside the bar. It's dirty, cheap, and wonderful and the jukebox has a variety of stuff, so you're not stuck with Salina or some bullshit all night. By the way, the lights are loooow, so when you're wasted as fuck and get that burning sensation in your loins, but the only person that will look at you has a fifty fifty chance of being a man or a woman, it's totally okay to use the "It was really dark" excuse when you wake up next to them in the morning. Seriously, it's that dark. The bathrooms are a shit hole and if you're into quickies with strangers in confined spaces, I have to warn you that you might be infected with a surprise case of herpes or the clap. Not what you were looking for on a Saturday night? Then don't fuck in the bathroom and put down TP on the seat and you should be okay.
