What we like about this place is that it's open early. My gf works the night shift and sometimes we come here after her shift. The food is hit or miss. Some is really good, some is ok, and some we found lacking. I like the spring rolls, she likes the yogurt and we both like the xoi cuc (sticky rice balls filled with mung beans and pork) and tofu pudding with ginger syrup (probably the best tofu pudding I've found so far). I love fried tofu, and had to swing by Duc Phuong to pick some up. They have a huge variety of food items they sell here- from fried tofu to Vietnamese desserts, boba, durian shakes, food in hot trays, pre-packaged Vietnamese plates, banh mi, etc. If you're looking for a one stop shop, this is a great option. They weren't busy at 2pm on a Sunday, which was probably a sign. I tried the Fried Tofu w/Onion & Fried Tofu w/Lemongrass (both were 4 pieces/$1.25). Sadly, the lemongrass tofu was super bland and didn't have any lemongrass flavor. The fried tofu with onion was ok, but also bland and needed salt. We stopped on this busy Saturday for a few Asian goodies to take on our three-hour trip. On a suggestion, for Vietnamese food and snacks on the way, we picked up a variety of small bites, including eggrolls, three different kinds of fresh rolls, and five che dessert drinks. The services from three employees we came across were efficient and friendly, except one lady behind the che and xoi bar (sweet dessert drinks and sticky rice bins) stood out as the worst service we've encountered. She has reddish Auburn hair and glasses and appears as one of the owners. There is no order that she will service who has been waiting next in line. She will take whoever yells out that they need a large order to go, especially if you are a male. I was standing and expecting an honor system happening to get service. A male customer jumped in front of me even though I told her I had been waiting as the next in line. She shrugged her shoulders, stared at my breasts, and moved on. No apologies, no regrets. The same happened to another customer that had been waiting patiently, and she skipped her and jumped to the next male customer calling out to her. If I were not on a time crunch and had not promised to pick up some food here, I would have taken my business elsewhere. Our thoughts on the few food grabs. The fresh rolls were decent, but their accompanying sauce was full of gummy starch. The egg rolls were small for $1.25 each, had little meat fillings, and had a strange and overwhelming sweetness as if there were loads of MSG in them. The che dessert drinks were overwhelmed with simple syrup. No prices are listed; you pay if you want the items, as they will pull numbers out of the air. There are many things to select from, and I don't even know how they would keep track of their price system. Prices vary daily, time of day, who is making the purchase, and who is ringing you out. This was our third time stopping in, and the prices changed each time. Crying out loud. For pricing reference, today, we spent about $80 for three small trays of fresh rolls, ten egg rolls, and five cups of sweet dessert drinks. It could have been a four-star potential, but we had to minus one star for the ridiculous "no first come, first serve policy" and another star for the sliding scales with pricing--two strikes on in our books. read more

This place is a small Vietnamese deli style shop that has Vietnamese sandwiches and tons of different silky tofu desserts like pandan tofu with coconut milk and sugar syrup, or tofu with durian and other tapioca. They also sell banh beo, banh cuon, rolled waffle cookie thing, and lots of different sticky rices (durian, pandan coconut, etc.) The service is friendly and service is fast. 1 star for service. I just came in today and I was waved by the lady managing the store in the first register. She rang me up and told me my total was $16.50. I gave her the only cash I have which is a $100 bill. She handed me $2.50 in change. I told her that this was not right because I handed her a $100 bill. She then opened her register and insisted that i handed her a $20 bill which she put on the top. We went back and forth until a customer in my right walked over and told her he saw her holding up my $100 bill. I thanked him for being a Good Samaritan. She said to him "thiet ha??" Which is "really?" In vietnamese, in a very condescending tone. She asked her worker to bring up the video from the camera in the back and asked me stand on the side to wait. I asked her where did she put my $100 bill if it's not there in the register, she said she will check the camera footage. I asked the man if he saw where she put the bill and he only said that he saw her holding it up. Meanwhile, customers were staring at me as though I was a criminal. The woman came out and handed me $83.50 the register and said sorry. I was mortified by the experience and wanted to warn people to use their credit card and if you do give them $100, make sure you announce it. read more

Tofu..tofu..tofu love I grew up loving the silken tofu (taho) as I wake up in the weekend mornings with a special kind of alarm in urban Philippines. These mornings would be woken up by calls by this street vendor carrying two metal pails with silken tofu and syrup with tapioca pearls...I remember scrambling out of the bed and grabbing loose change and an empty drinking glass to rush outside our house to meet our "taho" vendor. After paying the usual fare i would have a warm glass filled with creamy goodness which will be my sustenance in the early parts of the day. From that I learned to appreciate the firmer versions which is either fried, stuffed, sauteed or steamed as I matured. Going to this place made me rekindle those memories and enjoy the variety of this special kind of curd. They have flavored ones which were stuffed with onion leaves and mushrooms while others infused with lemon grass and chilies. They also offer other vietnamese food from shrimp cakes, fried bananas, spring rolls and stuffed rice sheets. The tofu isn't directly produced by the store compared to the other place that we go to but it does give you a different variety which I like. It is a bit far from where I live but since my friend does live within the area, I have a reason to pass by again to sample their other items. read more

Just be assertive and flash your money and clearly exclaim "4 pieces white tofu please!," and they will answer, Probably the best quality tofu in town for a decent price. Parking is a nightmare. Beware of little ol asian women drivers moving slowly and need 5 point turns to get out of their spot. But I'd say it's worth it for the quality of the tofu here itself. read more

Duc Phuong is an anchor store for this plaza with a corner and entryway location and good sized store front. Like fellow sandwich and tofu shops in this part of town, Duc Phuong specializes in an area of take out food items as well as a focus on fresh and fried tofu products and ché, a Vietnamese tapioca based dessert. I stopped by early in the morning and found a wide variety of items that had all been recently placed out including Banh cuon (rice rolls), fish cake, and pork rolls. The desserts looked good as did the fried tofu, but I only wanted savory items at the hour. My order (didn't get individual prices but total was under $12) Banh Cuon - a large platter of freshly wrapped grilled pork with rice rolls, lettuce and mint with an accompanying dipping sauce. Excellent. Fresh, tasty and filling. Fish cake - I saw a lot of fried tofu but this fried fish cake looked the best. Good size. Good flavor. Cha Lua - this Vietnamese ham wrapped with banana leaf was tasty but I'm not a fan of the whole peppercorns. Overall, solid spot for some easy take home items. I was most impressed by the freshness as it makes a difference and if you've ever tried an older lot like at Lee's Sandwich, it's a world of difference. Duc Phuong is cash only. read more

This place is clean. This place has a lot of tofu and soy products. But what I really like about is their home made soybean pudding. In someome places, it might be a little iffy with their home made concoctions due to health and sanitary issues, but I had some of these guys soybean pudding and I felt fine the next day. And it is some pretty good soybean pudding. If haven't had soybean pudding before, it's pretty much just like tofu, but served chilled with some syrup infused with ginger. This is my go to place in San Jose to get some soybean pudding, fried tofu and soy milk. This place has a lot of che, sticky rice, and Togo foods to choose from. I felt rushed from the sales lady behind the counter when I was trying rod figure out what to buy. They had banh lot with tofu che and that was a terrible recommendation from the lady. It was plain and lacked so much flavor. The che bop was okay. Che Thai was missing lots of fruits. The che thap cam was the best one. It had a lot more flavors than the rest. Also, you get charged extra for coconut milk and the sugar salt mix for the sticky rice. read more

Girlfriend informed me of a new Vietnamese fast food restaurant in the area. They are currently offering a "buy two, get one free" for tofu and che. I'm interested in neither of these two items, so I decided to order a banh mi. Other than that, the place seemed to offer a variety of fast foods similar to what you'd find at other fast food spots - except for a variety of fried foods like fried bananas, chicken wings, and different varieties of tofu. Like I mentioned, I ordered a bahn mi. I would give their bahn mi 2 stars. It lacked the pickled daikon and carrot, and jalapenos. It was topped with a Fred Flintstone cut cucumber. My favorite tofu place is An Dong Tofu. I come here for the other stuff that they sell, not the tofu. I've had the tofu here and it's usually not fresh and doesn't taste good. They do sell 4 pieces for $1 like most places, but it's not worth getting. They have different kinds of desserts here, sandwiches, togo plates, and cold coconut jello desserts (which are my fav here). I love their coconut jello because it's made fresh here, but you've got to be careful because they also sell these from different makers so you need to read the labels or ask which one was made there. The one thing I don't like about this place is their inconsistency with their prices. The skinny tall man behind the counter is always over charging and inconsistent. Because they have different coconut jellos here, some are $2 and some are $1.75. However, when I purchased it with him he charged me $2 for everything, but the younger female who works here explained to me that certain ones are only $1.75. When I brought this up to the man, he said in Vietnamese, "oh you don't want to sell things to make a profit?" Which sounds pretty bad especially with me as a customer standing there still basically I'm interpreting as, "he's trying to rip me off'". Great service! - I sometimes get overwhelmed going into a traditional Vietnamese store, given the many different things in there that I am not familiar with and usually there is no one to be able to explain things to me - and thus, I end up with the same things that I usually get. I like this store as it has a large variety of different foods, and desserts, AND they have patient and helpful staff. In particular, Kim, who speaks english, she is particularly helpful and patient - she explains things and even provides samples for me to try! The lady put the sandwich ingredients (cucumbers, radish, carrots, parsley) in a small plastic bag, separate from the baguette with meat in it so that I could eat it later in the day without it getting mushy.
