I used to live in San Diego a few years ago. Me and my wife drove to Julian at least once a month and had a mandatory stop at Dudley's. We planned a trip to San Diego last December and had to visit Dudley's again. They have a wide variety of breads and other bakery items. Their Jalapeño Cheddar bread is one of the best I have had yet. We usually visit the store early in the morning and grab a few bags of freshly baked bread. This is the worst over priced food. It's a tourist trap! Do not eat here!! They don't clean tables. They don't change out trash, but you have to clean your table. There are always flies in the restaurant. They don't help customers after an order. I was ignored when I wanted a refund. Please go to the Farmhouse restaurant if you want a hot decent meal. It might be pricy, but better than this place. I had the farmhouse restaurant bring me food outside Dudley's because I couldn't walk after an accident. Best meal I've had all day. Dudleys seems to run off the bakery they are very proud of. I get it. But if you don't know the bakery, just don't eat here, thee front is disgustingly gross, overpriced, under served, disgusting customer service. AGAIN! Do not eat at this restaurant! Oh! Stopped for lattes and pastries to go. Although late on a weekday morning, they were very busy but provided quick service. The latte tasted like coffee unlike the Starbucks latte the previous day that tasted more like milk. The pastries were perfect. Been stopping by Dudley's since the early 70's. 99% of those stops were a 10! But not the one this Monday. My hope is that it was an anomaly. The cinnamon-raisin bread had verrrrry few raisins, and almost zero cinnamon taste. The sourdough bread needed a lot more sour! My brother loved this place so he took me here and now I love it too!! It's so cute inside and very inviting. It was also very clean with Excellent customer service!!! They have a great gift shop and bakery. There are lots of different breads and sweet treats. We ordered sandwiches, but the bakery sweets all look so good we ordered some of those a too!! Sweets First: We shared the Cherry Cheese Pocket, Chocolate Macaroon and Blueberry scone. They were all very good. We all loved them, but I should have bought a dozen macaroons Togo!! BEST BLUEBERRY SCONE OF LIFE. I would add a pic, but I ate it all. If you try anything at this place, try the blueberry scone. It's not hard as a rock like at Starbucks lol. We arrived about 11:30 on a Thursday. It was quite busy as usual but this day there were more people than I've ever seen before. They were all sitting at the tables eating deli sandwiches or drinking coffee with bakery treats. Unfortunately the bread seemed to be sold out except for a few loaves. Our choices were narrow but we found a loaf of cheddar jalapeño. That has been a favorite of ours for years but it has been quite a while since we've bought a loaf. We took a peek at the pastry case. There were lots of beautiful pastries and cookies to choose but they are very pricey and we were saving our sweet tooth for pie that day. The checkout line wasn't too bad. Thank goodness we got there after the rush! Now for the review of the bread. It was a huge disappointment. The recipe has obviously changed. The slices are thinner, the texture is different, and the flavor is bland. Nothing special, nothing like it used to be. What happened Dudley's? I know we will always go back to Dudley's. So... we stopped and noticed this place had sandwiches and since we were hungry, we ordered 2 sandwiches. They were the Black and Bleu sandwiches that were on focaccia bread. The bread was sooooo thick and was completely falling apart that I had to take my sandwich apart and eat it piece by piece. Not cool. I gave 2 stars cause the pastry we got was pretty good. I stopped by Dudley's on the way home from hiking Santa Ysabel. There's lots of baked breads, homemade pastries, and gifts from local artisans to choose from. I picked up an apple crumble pie, a few jars of strawberry rhubarb jam, and two sandwiches for lunch on the park tables outside. I ordered the Baja, which has roasted chicken, jalapenos (so much so that I had to take some out!), and Dudley's jalapeno bread which I loved! And my boyfriend got the Club sandwich which he did enjoy except for the roast beef that he ended up removing. Since the sandwiches are on Dudley's bread, the full size sandwiches are big enough to share and we were stuffed! Wait time for our sandwiches took quite a while, about 15 minutes, but they were worth the wait. We shared the apple pie with our family on Christmas and it was a hit! I also gifted one of the jams. When I opened it, I was surprised it was on white bread! I haven't had white bread since my childhood during the "Wonder Bread" years! I had the most nostalgic experience at Dudley's today and loved every moment of it. I remember coming here in the 80s and 90s standing in long lines for bread in the cold Julian winters and the bread always being so worth the trip, the wait, and the cold! Today's visit did not disappoint--and was actually better! New ownership since I first visited as a kid but they still continued the tradition of what matters the most-- the bread! Service was really good (I think the old reviews of rude service no longer applies because those people are no longer there or got better training), bread as fresh as ever, tuna melt sandwich was amazing, cold brew coffee was strong and perfect. Ringin in the New Year with some Dudley's! Called a few days ago just to confirm they'd be open on Sunday 1/2/22.... and it was a YES! Passed by so many times on the motorcycle and it was great to catch up with my moto group who also, never knew Dudley's had indoor seating! So, that's always an extra bonus. BTW, seating is available outside as well. If Dudley's doesn't grab your attention... you're just missing out! Here's the thing... yeah, we can all go up to Julian and get pie. But, most of those places ONLY have pie and sweets. For me, I want a meal of sorts- something BESIDES pie! And the cool thing is- Dudley's offers that! You can get any sammie available HALF or FULL sammie! Kettle chips are available. Annnnd- fresh bread, pies, all sorts of pastries! Hubby & I are such huge fans of the Jalapeño Cheddar loaf- I forgot how spicy taking a bite into it can be. Just made a fried bologna grilled cheese breakfast sammie... and thank gawd I had my coffee on hand! LOL For our group, dining inside- we shared a whole apple cherry pie with the crumble crust. The pie was just a bit warm when we picked it up from the shelf- letting customers know it was just baked that morning! Crumble crust was light flaky perfection! Sliced apples inside had a slight crunch to them, which I preferred. Not a fan of super soggy apples. Pardon their bathroom renovations in both the male/ female restrooms. Huge parking lot! Great bakery. I did not try the coffee or other drinks but it smelled so good. I went later in the day, about 3 or 4 pm and there was still a good selection but a lot was sold out. Come early! Everything we had was super fresh, soft and delish! They have a huge selection of savory and sweets. I saw pies, cookies, breads, rolls, drinks, beers (in a cooler), brownies, etc. I did see some sugar free options but not many. Did not see any sugar free options for drinks other than the SF vanilla. There is a small area with tables and chairs where you can enjoy your meal. The restroom was not very clean and not too handicap friendly. The door to get in has a code and you can get that from an employee, but it is very heavy, difficult for someone in a wheelchair to get through. The parking lot is very big and fits large vehicles. For years, we have been driving by Dudley's Bakery and every time we have to stop and pick up some bread or a pastry. But it has been nearly two years since we last visited, and how wonderful to stop by this weekend to see such lovely renovations they have made. It is so warm and inviting and cozy inside. They still make the most amazing breads and treats, but they have turned the inside area into a place that is so lovely. Is so much nicer now to walk around and pick up your favorite breads, and browse the items they are selling.
