Dudley's has been around for forever and a day! I don't get up to Julian all that often, but when I do, I always stop at Dudley's. I'm not a bread person but I can't resist a great loaf of pumpernickel bread....and Dudley doesn't disappoint. Their bakery is exceptional. This past trip, I enjoyed a chocolate filled croissant.There are so many delicious baked goods to choose from! Their prices are reasonable and their products are delicious! We've been going to Dudleys for over a dozen years about once a month to get great bread and pies. Recently bought a Apple-Peach pie at Dudleys in Santa Isabel. Went home to enjoy it later that night, when we started eating it ,we noticed odd ,not enjoyable taste. My wife said we should put it it the freezer and save it till next visit to return it, we did that. When we went back yesterday, some skinny lil boy with glasses said without a receipt he could not do anything to compensate us. We asked for another pie ,he said nope, we asked to swap for a couple strudel, he said again nothin he could do for us. The pie was only like $20. We didn't want cash . Needless to say , we won't be back there to buy pies anymore . We will instead go to Moms for our bakery wants. Sad that they would not offer to make issue better. They just lost a years long loyal customer. We ended up throwing the pie in the trash can right there as it tasted so bad, It was only missing one regular size piece of pie. read more

After hiking the Volcan Mt. and enjoying scrumptious Peach Pie at The Pie Co. (on Main St. in Julian), my friend wanted to stop by Dudley's and get Date Nut Raisins bread ($6.60). Her words, "The bread has a slight sweetness. It is sooo delicious when you toast it and spread a little bit of butter!" It's a great place for a quick stop. WOW! Dudley's new owner is really stepping things up! They'd been going steadily downhill for years, but after hearing about the new owner, we went in there the other day and it was CLEAN and revitalized, and the pastry selection was HUGE! My gpa used to come out this way when he was younger. He always mentioned they stopped by for bread when heading back from Julian. We finally had the opportunity to come out here on the 1 year anniversary of Covid Lockdowns (2021). I was VERY pleased with how they handled covid restrictions. There is clear tape throughout the venue to manage the line. Most people are good about compliance and social distance enough and wear masks. The ladies running the counter are quick and efficient to keep the line moving. They have a great selection of breads.. the cookies are delicious and chewy.. and we absolutely loved our sandwiches. Baja warm and the TBA cold.. really hit the spot with the snow play we had later on. They are generous with the kids meals -- could actually feed an adult (half sandwich and a bag of chips!). I know it's a local and nearly historic institution. They definitely get our support and we love the jalapeno cheese bread. We'll definitely return and recommend. Give them your love! read more

Super great pit stop for our weekend "loop." We drive out through Valley Center past Lake Henshaw and on to Dudleys. Nice clean bathrooms, sandwiches if you're hungry, and enormous macaroons! Plenty of seating inside and always a a huge selection of bread. Our favorites are the squaw bread, asiago olive and cinnamon. There are some great picnic spots past Julian but we like to take our provisions up to the Sunrise Highway and enjoy the sweeping views while eating. read more

This was a great stop on our way into Julian. It wasn't too busy and the service was nice and friendly. The chipotle sandwich was super good but I kinda expected it to be a hot sandwich and think it might've been a little better that way! My partner got the club sandwich and absolutely loved it (he tore into it before I got a picture lol). My first time at Dudley's and it was fun bakery to visit. Took a few moments to find where the line was to order because I was too distracted by the yummy pastries along the way. Marketing tactics, check! Ambiance was fun but a little dark inside. I love all the lemon infused pistachio Venetian cookies and lemon pistachio biscotti! I was craving an apple turnover. In my mind I was thinking Pepperidge Farms. Dudley's apple filling is very fresh and delicious. Pastry dough outside was too dense for me and I was hoping for more flaky texture. What I love about Dudleys is that its the halfway point, meet up spot, the place to grab coffee, some fresh baked bread and some pastries when I go for a long drive. Whether Im going to Mount Laguna, Borrego Park, Palomar Mountain, or Julian, Dudleys is the spot I or my friends make a pit stop too. I usually get out pretty early. They open at 8 Am which is super helpful. The parking lot is nicely paved and has plenty of space for 40+ cars. Its a sight to see from this as well. From the fields with the cows, its all really relaxing. The staff is friendly. Its really a great Sunday drive spot and you see all the travelers usually stop by here. read more

Purchased an apple-peach pie to serve for the holidays. Very first bite of very first piece had 2 pieces of plastic in it. No one else in the family wanted to try it. Next day, husband took a small piece because he didn't want it wasted. Chewed for a second, spit it out in the trash and then threw the whole pie away. It was our first time coming in. I probably spent more than I should have but the bread, pie and pastry selection were incredible. The staff was super friendly and so patient. I went back in October during the fall festival. It was super busy. They have an array of different farmhouse decor. The prices are super reasonable. I will be going back. All of the breads, and desserts were delicious and you can just taste the freshness in every bite. Nothing like store bought products. The location is relatively easy for parking. I've been going to Dudley's regularly for over 50 years. In that time they've become an institution & revamped the front several times it's a very pleasant atmosphere in this current version. Their service is as always consistently excellent prices not cheap certainly. They hustle to keep the lines manageable their scones & other baked desserts are terrific. But I'm sorry to say their breads have gone from great to average. I'll try some more varieties but they are more bland & commercial than ever before. So enjoy the drive, the coffee, the treats but probably not a special trip for the bread any longer. read more

I have been going to Dudley's for over 30 years. Their jalapeño bread has always been highly addicting to me. Over the last several years, the amount of jalapeños in the bread has gone down and down and down. My family brought me home a loaf today, and I think that loaf was shown a picture of a jalapeño, and perhaps baked in the oven with a jalapeño scented candle somewhere in the room. I'm very disappointed in the amount of jalapeños and the jalapeño bread. If people find jalapeño bread too spicy, they should order something else. the amount of nostalgia this place has for me is boundless. i grew up stopping here on each girl scout camping trip when it was on the way. and while the decor has certainly changed in the last 25 years, the bread and hospitality has not. i was graciously cared for by gracie and zea when i stopped in shortly before closing and the two openly listened to my stories, sharing my joy. it was a special moment and i look forward to many more stops along the way. read more
