Ahhhh a must stop when heading to Julian. I have fond memories of this bakery growing up. The bread is everything it is hyped up to be. You will see people walking out with multiple bags. And how can you not when they have a variety of breads that you can eat by itself. My personal favorite is the Baja Jalapeno (dairy free). I'm sure I would have more favs, but as I am lactose intolerant I'm limited to the loafs. But their lemon poppyseed and banana nut bread smell divine! I'm sure they are. Sure, Dudley's bread is sold at every grocery store in San Diego but the selection here at the bakery is impressive. Not only do they sell bread but they also put it to good use in their deli. They offer several signature sandwiches, but I recommend ordering a custom made one. Pretty good stuff. We were at this place today after a long time we remembered the fresh baked pastries and breads. We were looking for the expiration dates and the list of the ingredients on all the products but there were none!! Strange: is it even legal not to have this information on all products? We bought 2 bread loaves and 2 cakes that were all stale!! Where is the freshly baked bread I remember?? I've been going to Dudley's regularly for over 50 years. In that time they've become an institution & revamped the front several times it's a very pleasant atmosphere in this current version. Their service is as always consistently excellent prices not cheap certainly. They hustle to keep the lines manageable their scones & other baked desserts are terrific. But I'm sorry to say their breads have gone from great to average. I'll try some more varieties but they are more bland & commercial than ever before. So enjoy the drive, the coffee, the treats but probably not a special trip for the bread any longer. read more

Idk how this place doesn't have a higher rating! It's phenomenal! Long line, which moves quickly, but clearly a lot of people like this place. I was visiting the area for the weekend and a local told me about it and said they had the best pastries. And boy was he right! Seriously, the brioche brownie with cream cheese swirl is the best thing I've ever put in my mouth! I'm crying that I only bought one and they don't appear to ship their goods. Like I want to drive back to this middle of no where bakery just for this brioche brownie! We also got an almond coffee cake, delicious. A chocolate muffin, delightful. A good ending to a sad start! That was my experience at Dudleys. Simply ordered a small coffee with a non-dairy creamer. Was surprised that the little extra cost 80 cents, but so be it. The coffee was better than I expected but noticed the curdled appearance of the creamer which irritated me enough to return to the clerk who sold me the cup of java. I asked if the management cared about customer feedback; got affirmation; then expressed my annoyance about the 80 cent curdles. The woman asked if I wanted my money back ("Yes!") and without blinking an eye she reached into the cash drawer and handed me a bill larger than I paid. Now that is good service. I'm sure they will now reconsider the brand of the non-dairy creamer and I hope they will notify guests of the cost of such extras. I plan to return to DUdleys with high hopes. read more

I have been going to Dudley's for over 30 years. Their jalapeño bread has always been highly addicting to me. Over the last several years, the amount of jalapeños in the bread has gone down and down and down. My family brought me home a loaf today, and I think that loaf was shown a picture of a jalapeño, and perhaps baked in the oven with a jalapeño scented candle somewhere in the room. I'm very disappointed in the amount of jalapeños and the jalapeño bread. If people find jalapeño bread too spicy, they should order something else. the amount of nostalgia this place has for me is boundless. i grew up stopping here on each girl scout camping trip when it was on the way. and while the decor has certainly changed in the last 25 years, the bread and hospitality has not. i was graciously cared for by gracie and zea when i stopped in shortly before closing and the two openly listened to my stories, sharing my joy. it was a special moment and i look forward to many more stops along the way. read more

We stopped in on our way home from Anza Borrego, bought 5 loaves of bread (buy 4 get 1 free). The bread was OK but no better than bread from large commercial bakeries. It is a regular bakery with a large artfully merchandised area of gift items. Several I checked were from China, not local. Apparently we missed out on the 'old' Dudley's. Almost didn't stop here since we saw the 3.5 star average review. But I am sooo glad we did. We stopped by after a hike and went a little crazy with ordering, but everything we had was beyond delicious. The vegetarian sandwich was one of the best veggie sandwich I've ever had, my husband had the BLAT, which he liked. We loved the almond danish, croissant, chocolate croissant, and blueberry scone. Got a loaf of the Asiago olive bread to take home. Will definitely be back the next time we are in Julian! read more

My mom asked some questions about a cinnamon pull apart that Dudleys used to sell, and the lady at the register was super rude, dismissive and kept cutting us off. I knew the original owner. He had a thriving business and great products where he used quality ingredients. Life moves on and there are different owners. I was looking forward to purchase some date nut bars. I knew they were delicious. They are no longer made. The young girl tried to convince that the Apple bars were the original ones. Nope but original to the different owners. I did buy some but never again. Dry dry dry. I purchased the Almond Coffee Ring. It looked great but I felt like I was gnawing in a bone. Hard and dry. I don't k ow, inferior ingredients? I did buy some Sat Nut bread. That was pretty good toasted along with the onion dill, so not all was a disappointment. The bakery is not the same. We've lived not too far from here for just a few short years, and only just now recently discovered this wonderful place. We used to live near several excellent bakeries in our former community, and I was really sad because I thought there was nothing quality nearby until we found Dudleys! The quality of the baked goods and patisserie are top-notch. I've traveled throughout Europe and I am a baker myself, so I appreciate quality when I see it. I'm more than willing to make a 30 minute drive to Dudleys to buy a fresh loaf of bread. They make beautiful macaroons and my husband loves the chocolate croissants. It's sad when people make a one star review over a bad experience with a single employee, knowing that this is a small business. Don't read into that-small businesses like this need to be supported, because quality bakers are hard to find and few and far between. Went there this past week and was delightfully surprised by how yummy the pastries were. We got two loaves of bread that people requested, a cherry turnover, an orange almond muffin, a chocolate croissant and a bear claw. I ate the croissant and later the bear claw... both were so great. The croissant didn't have a lot of chocolate inside but what it did have was good tasting Belgium chocolate, which makes all the difference. The bear claw was a good balance of pastry and cinnamon /brown sugar filling. I would definitely get both again. If you're on your way to Julian, stop by Dudley's. read more

It's adorable inside. Currently, there are lots of Christmas decorations. I couldn't resist a sparkly light up ornament. They had honey and baked goods and lots of bread. I was here on Friday, November 12. It's now Monday November 14. I bought a loaf of the Sweet French. Friday it was fantastic. Saturday still great. Sunday seemed like it was starting to dry out and Monday it's dry and tasteless. I was really hoping this bread would last me a week. It's sliced very thin. I don't live in California so it was very important to me to keep this bread closed up tight because I can't just go get another loaf and at $6-7 (I can't remember) that's a bit hefty for bread. I realize it's fresh, homemade with no preservatives, but lasting barely four days is ridiculous. I wish they had a thicker slice option. If you buy the bread eat it fast. read more

Dudley's used to be THE place to go for the absolute best pies and baked goods in the Julian area. Not sure what happened, but this is definitely no longer the case. Our pie was undercooked and basically inedible. We had also gone nearby to the Julian Pie Company and purchased one of their Pies, which was PERFECT!!! After stopping at farm stand close by, we realized the tomatoes we just bought needed some fresh bread to go with them so we headed to Dudley's. We left with a lot more than bread! Decided to split a veggie sandwich that was very yummy with the crunchy, toasted bread. Even my meat eating husband enjoyed it. (Note to self, get yourself a whole one next time.) We left with 2 loaves of bread, apple cider, and of course, an apple pie. Plenty of parking. They have gift items and honey for sale as well. The sandwiches they make are super yummy and are pretty good size and can be shared for a light lunch. They have seating inside and out. The ambiance is so peaceful there (actually the whole little area is). They bake on Thursdays, so Thursdays and Fridays are the best days to go. We always get the garlic sourdough and their jalapeño cheese loaves when we pass through. The staff is always so friendly and helpful. read more

Fresh bread!!! Heck yes! When you walk in there's a souvenir shop which seems a little out of place but if you skip past it, you'll see a sandwich shop. I wish my friend and I would have had lunch here because the lines weren't nearly as long as the ones in the town center. There is indoor seating. As you walk past the line to order deli sandwiches, you may or may not see a long line for the bakery. You pick up your bread as you wait in line. It's a good deal to get 4 loaves and get the 5th free. My friend and I both took advantage of it. Everything smelled amazing and looked delicious. I found 3 friendly vegan options for bread- the San Diego Sourdough, the Maple Pecan and the Prairie Sqwua... all were delicious!!! There is plenty of parking and a popular stop among tourists. I have been coming to Dudley's bakery since I was a kid. Love this place. Over the weekend my wife and decided to take a day trip out to Borrego Springs. As we got closer we realized "Oh Yeah, Dudley's is on the way"! We had to pop in. Unfortunately , they were out of my favorite bread( Jalapeno Cheese) but not to worry, there are plenty of other delicious breads available. We picked up some Hawaiian Sweet Bread, Baja Jalapeno , Asiago Cheese and Black Olive. We also got a Blueberry/Cream cheese strudel and a tasty ham sandwich to go. Due to COVID they only serve pre-made items to go and no sitting inside. We were sent off ready for our little day trip with a week or two worth of darn good bread. read more

As you drive down the rolling hills entering Santa Ysabel you can't help to see a white building out in the distance where fellow drivers/bikers are pulled over to take a break. Patrons sitting outside on the steps enjoying pastries, bread and sandwiches. Although you can buy Dudley's bread in grocery stores in San Diego, the variety of flavors that they do offer at the store itself is not comparable. I came in with my daughter for the first time. We ordered an egg sandwich. After about 10 minutes I went to check on it. A young gal behind the counter barely looked up at us and said the buzzer will make a loud sound. She never bothered to check. I went up 10 minutes later the same gal very rudely tried to push the buzzer back towards me when I inquired again. Luckily another worker helped look into it. It turns out the gal behind the counter never hit to submit order. This could have all been avoided if the worker had checked when I first when up 10 minutes into my wait. At this point I just asked to be refunded which they did and I appreciated. What must have been the owner or manager was very nice and put a few muffins together on the house. That was also nice. I get that mistakes happen. But again the young gal (with a bandana in her hair) that refused to check, make eye contact or apologize absolutely ruined it for me! Extremely rude. Very frustrating 30 minutes and poor customer service from that one worker. read more
