Dissapointed. Not at all like I remember. No potato bread. Squaw bread is pale and dry, not the rich dark bread that I was expecting. No yummy bread smell whan you arrive. I don't know if they actually make bread here anymore, or if it is just for sale with a bunch of "gifts". Arrived about 1:30 pm on a Monday. Maybe its different on another day or time. I'm giving 3 stars because the blueberry struedel and BLT sandwich were really tasty. The customer service, which I'm REALLY big on anywhere I go was subpar. I just didn't feel welcome. We waited quite a while for our sandwich and was addressed with "Jane!" yelled across the counter and our bag shoved our way. No, "thank you" or "thanks for being patient." I understand that the place is busy, but service goes quite far with me. A genuine, "thanks for coming by" would have changed my mind. Dudley's Bakery is always the must stop for our family when heading into the main part of Julian. We make it our first stop to ensure we are able to get everything we want before it is all picked over. We enjoy getting the cinnamon pull apart bread, but Dudley's only makes it on the weekends. This bakery is such a cute place, I loved the ambiance and all the decor items that you can shop while you're waiting for your food. Came here to see what the hype was about. I didn't get to try their pie but did try their garlic sourdough and several of the pastries. The bread was good, very garlic, but a bit more expensive than you would expect. The pastries were just ok, a bit on the too sweet side. They were out of most pastries the weekend after Thanksgiving. You may have to come earlier in the day maybe? Not sure what their baking schedule is. I thought the jams and jellies were overpriced as well. read more

My husband and I currently work from home due to the pandemic. We began going on local road trips on the weekends to get out of the house and enjoy surrounding areas of San Diego. This past Sunday (8/9) we took a drive to Idyllwild and enjoyed the scenic view. We stopped in Julian and thought we'd pick up a pie at Julian Pie Company - we had enjoyed a pie from there the weekend before and it was so delicious we wanted to try a different pie. Unfortunately, the line was out the door and we didn't want to spend our afternoon waiting in a long line so we checked out Dudley's. After all, they are famous for their variety of breads and they also make pies so we were pretty optimistic about the quality of the pies they make. We bought an Apple berry pie with a crumb top. After a long day driving the back roads and enjoying our day, we got home well after the sun set, settled down and sliced into our pie from Dudley's Bakery. The slices of apples were crunchy, not tender. They were under cooked. The crumb topping wasn't toasted well and was not clumped together (it was like dry dust), it needed butter or something to bind it a little. And it needed to be in the oven longer to toast more (for crunch). The berries and the bottom crust were delicious. read more

No trip to Julian is complete without a stop at Dudleys. They have the best bread in the SD area. This stuff is baked fresh and not full of preservatives or other junk. Their buy 4 get one free offer is always in effect. We picked up 2 loafs or onion rye, one loaf of jalapeno cheddar, one loaf of cinnamon raisin and one loaf of garlic sourdough. We also got some fruit bars and an apple strudel thing. Total for everything was a little over $26.00. Well worth it for the freshest, tastiest bread you can get in SD. Dudleys is fantastic. Dudley's food and bread is still as good as it was 20 years ago. They have the best Avocado toast I've ever had! Very cute now with local artisan items for purchase. The staff were very friendly, but made fun of me when I told them their iced tea was disgusting. I DO NOT recommend the Peach Vanilla Rooibos.....tastes like chemicals. I do recommend the mint cucumber lemonade that I had to purchase to replace the undrinkable iced tea. I have always been a fan of Dudley's Bakery. I used to drive up after work just to get out of the city. I always loved driving out east and stopping at Dudley's was a favorite stop. Now that I live in Florida, I can't get the bread unless I visit San Diego. The Bakery is more than just a Bakery. They make some of the best breads I have ever had like date nut and raison, cheddar cheese, sheepherder, Jalapeño Cheddar, Irish bread and many others. One of the newest I got was the Julian apple and nut. The breads are always light and airy. They are wonderful and the nut breads are a favorite of mine for breakfast. The bakery also sells Julian Pies which are absolutely wonderful. Yeah they run about 15 dollars for a pie but they are absolutely wonderful. The bakery also makes their sweets such as cookies, scones, cinnamon rolls and many other treats. The bakery also has a deli inside. You can order a variety of sandwiches on the wonderful Dudley's breads. They also sell chips, drinks and Julian Apple cider. Additionally inside there is a little gift shop with goodies made by locals. If you are driving in this area, STOP, you will not be disappointed. read more

This is a pretty cool looking place. It's a nice stop on the way to or back from visiting Julian. I've heard good things about this place, but from my experience it's been hit and miss. Some of my friends have been the hits, and I've been the miss. The breads are ok, but there's quite a variety. That's good. The sandwiches are pretty depending on the sandwich maker working that day. I got a sandwich during my first visit and thought it was pretty good. When my friends wanted to visit, I was ok with it. I wasn't too hungry so I decided to get a snack. I went for the cinnamon rolls. How can you go wrong with cinnamon rolls? Well, I guess you can. I got some dry stale old cinnamon rolls for the price of a lunch. I could have gotten better from 7/11. Right off of the main road and cross street towards Lake Henshaw. There are small paintings inside and historic pieces that will keep you interested. If you love fresh breads with different flavors (date nut raisin, jalapeño cheddar, sun dried tomatoes etc etc ) then you have to stop at this landmark bakery in Santa Ysabel on the way up or down Julian. They are always busy though so patience is a virtue when you venture here. Today is one of those days. Line was out by the front door. On top of that, they only had one cashier working the register for some reason. If you buy 4 bags of bread, you get the 5th one free. Date nut raisin is their big seller and I can taste why . It is very good, soft with ample amount of date nuts and raisins and when especially freshly baked. Had a little trouble with parking so had to drive around a bit until someone left. Touristy spot and they sell other trinkets besides their bread and sandwiches. They also sell pies, jams and jellies as well. Grab a basket before you start choosing your breads. Otherwise, you end up carrying a bunch because it will be hard to resist not to! so many to choose from. read more

8/12/22 approx 2 pm I remember going to Dudley's for 60 years now. I have been out of state for 13 years I'm back and finally got there, purchased 3 loaves of bread while better then most things you buy in the market not like I remember. Two of the loaves had decent flavor but both have a dry texture like boarder line stale and the third was ridiculous. The label said Sourdough for those of you who are not familar with sourdough it has a pungent aroma a taste that is immediately reconizeable and a texture that that boarders on chewy. This loaf resembled wonder bread. in taste and texture. I very rarely make a public complaint I just don't go back. The point I want to make is it is sad that with a reputation like Dudley's should know better. If I am going to spend $6.50 a loaf for bread I expect a good loaf. I went on a Friday morning and bought several specialty loaves and 2 cinnamon rolls. The cinnamon rolls were terrible. They were very dry and rubbery. They were clearly a day or two old. The old lady with long hair behind the counter wouldn't give the healthcare discount to the customer in front of me. The customer showed her work ID and the old lady told her that they're not giving discounts anymore. Yet, their website clearly states they still are. I left Julian without a pie because I heard that Dudley's made better treats. I ordered the apple pie which was dry and mostly empty of any filling. What was inside was chewy. I also ordered a cinnamon roll with frosting and it ended up tasting like sour cream frosting which I don't like so that ruined it. I gave three stars only because my son ordered a chocolate chip cookie and it was pretty tasty. The prices were high but the restrooms were clean. read more

Jalapeno Cheddar, Irish Potato, Sheepherder, Buffalo Blue Cheese, Date Nut and Raisin, these are just a few of the breads you can get at Dudley's. Dudley's offers some of the most interesting and best tasting breads. My favorite is the Jalapeno Cheddar. I personally think a grilled cheese on this bread is out of this world. If you like cheese with a little spice it is wonderful. My other favorite is the Irish Potato. It is very light and airy with a great taste. I saw a new one this time, Hawaiian Sweet bread. I am excited to try this bread. All of the breads i have ever bought have been amazing. They seem to always have a deal of buy four loaves and get the fifth free which makes each loaf just over 4 dollars. Not bad considering the prices of a loaf of bread at your normal supermarket. I have to be honest out of the many times I have been here I have never ordered anything at the deli. The sandwiches look great and since they are served on some of the best bread no doubt they are good but I can only vouch for the bread since that what I come to buy. I did however get a cookie last time I came and it was very good. Overall it's a great place to stop if you are driving buy and want some awesome bread. read more

THE DUDLEY'S YOU KNEW AND LOVED IS NO MORE. Dudley's has changed hands and it's AWFUL! First of all, I spoke to the daughter of the woman who used to own it, she tells me where they used to support local businesses, using only local honey's and such, they stopped doing so. To skimp on money, no doubt and the taste of the food shows it. Let's start back in August, though. For years I stopped at Dudley's every time I went to Julian. I loved the homey feel, looking at the crystals in the gift shop and, of course, the breads. As I was walking out from the bakery, past the deli, I heard the counter-person say, "No, we can't give you half a sandwich anymore, the new owner won't let us." "Okay...", I thought. Not good. It was after I left that I spoke to the prior owner's daughter, who runs the crystal shop across the street. She warned me that the bread I just bought might taste a bit different (it did) and why. It was still good but not 'especially' good. The loaves are much flatter and the bread just doesn't taste as light or fresh. Nevertheless, my husband found the cinnamon bread worked for french toast (since toasting it was like toasting flatbread) so we stopped the other day on the way to Julian. Much to our dismay, when we walked in, it was HORRIBLE! First of all, you can't walk in from the door near the fireplace anymore (where the Christmas Tree and Santa used to sit), you have to come in the side door. Why? Because they have completely dismantled the gift shop and made some sterile silver and white gentrified nightmare of a cold empty space that has scattered nouveau riche bench-like tables scattered around with other tables interspersed with ridiculous silver upscale 'kitch' sitting on them. Even the tiny Christmas tree sitting in the corner, barely noticeable, looked like it was a poor man's version of what they think a tree should look like on Sacks Fifth Avenue or something, only tacky. They have moved the bakery from the back to the side, behind the deli, so when you walk in it feels like walking into a warehouse. It's completely devoid of any kind of warmth, feeling or anything that Dudley's was known for. Stopping there was never just about the baked goods, it was about the experience, but no more. But let's mention one more thing about how the food has changed, we thought we would get a cheese danish. We always loved them as something special for the holidays, more so than other places. We bought one. I couldn't even finish it. If they had just been honest and called it a 'custard danish' then I wouldn't have even bought it, but that's all it was. Overly sweet, gooey custard. I'd be hard-pressed to know there was any cheese in there at all. But why wouldn't they lie about that? They seem to have no scruples, no morals as to trade on the good name that Dudley's has spent decades fostering. In a matter of a few months, they have completely destroyed an institution. Shame on them. If they wanted to create some sort of gentrified nouveau riche self-serving bullspit, go ahead. Buy an empty building and have at it, but don't steal someone's identity and destroy the reputation they spent years building. That mindset is disgusting and repulsive to me. Dudley's Bakery has been a staple on our trips through julian. The main reason is that they have freshly baked bread and a large selection to choose from. We would frequently buy sandwiches from them which were really good post covid but in our last 2 years, the quality has gone downhill and they no longer have half sandwiches. I was also a fan of the Blueberry cheese danish because it was soft, tender, and flavorful but that recipe has definitely changed, it was dry and devoid of flavor. it's up in the air if I'll buy items from them again. read more

We have been coming to Dudley's Bakery for over thirty years now and I am not sure what has happened to Dudley's in the past two years. On Saturday, November 16, we purchased several things at the bakery including a box of assorted pastries, several loaves of bread and a couple of bags of fruit bars--a perennial fall favorite of our family. Each of the pastries had almost no filling and were a complete rip-off of nothing more than pie dough with a smattering of "something" that is supposed to pass as fruit, but is more like juice at the bottom of the pot smeared onto the dough--and for this they charge $2.45 each! I am honestly embarrassed for Dudley's due to the previous standard of quality compared to what I purchased on Saturday. I usually do not buy Dudley's fruit bars anywhere else because I have found in the past they were freshest at the bakery. Those that I purchased on Saturday at the bakery were dry and hard--nothing like those that I have purchased in the past. The owner makes it a point to respond to Yelp reviewers but I honestly think her time would be better spent checking on the quality of food coming from their ovens. read more

Don't you love when you go somewhere and they treat you like an idiot when you ask for something that they don't make anymore? After coming here for the first time in a year, they completely changed the model. Well... they don't do custom sandwiches anymore. Fine, but don't treat us like dummies when we ask and that used to be your thing! They used to have menu cards that you could literally create your own sandwich, now they have their basic-ass menu of sandwiches and I had to make a bunch of adjustments. Before our trip to Warner Springs, California, for a weekend getaway, we made this pit stop. My MIL insisted we visit this bakery in order to purchase some breads before heading to Warner Springs. The never-ending winding road driving from El Cajon, California to Santa Ysabel was indeed inspiring. Indeed it was a quaint old town feeling in the middle of no where once we reach this bakery. During that faithful Friday afternoon of July 25th we were there, this place was pretty empty and quiet. The service were superb, all the staff are very friendly and are very knowledgable upon the goods they sell. The only time, this place were packed with tourists, customers alike were during the weekends. Yes we made another stop at this lovely bakery on Sunday July 27th 2008 too. They have plenty of bread goods, pasteries, deli, cookies and fruitbars. They also offer beverages. There is also a cute survenior shop in this store. Love the smell of freshly baked breads... Drove a long way to visit Dudley's on 8/27, after enjoying there products as a child growing up in San Diego I remember their products from fundraising events and from trips with my parents to the Julian area. Was really disappointed when I arrived at the bakery today just before 1pm, only to find a sign on the door indicating they had closed early for the day so that the staff could participate in "bonding with one another." Really disappointing and frustrating as we had come a long way to purchase bread and don't get to this part of San Diego often as I now reside in the Inland Empire. Even checked their website the night before our planned visit which did not advise they would not be open til 5pm this date. If we had known about the early closure we would have skipped the trip altogether or left earlier in the day in order to arrive before 1pm, which we actually did. But the doors were already locked at 12:52pm. Sadly won't be back in this area for some time and now I'm honestly not sure I would patronize this business again. Sad day. read more

On impulse, Mr. S. and the Grammy Squad took a little detour last week and ended up at Dudley's Bakery. If we were in a time machine and it was the 1970's again, this place would definitely get 5 stars. It was kind of a sad experience this time around. After building up how awesome it is to see bread baking we were really disappointed. The bread, what bread was available, sat on large baker racks waiting to be picked up. No friendly faces to greet us and definitely no sampling this past Thursday. In fact, the woman running the register seemed to really dislike her job. Super disappointed in our take out sandwich order. We stopped at Dudley's at Santa Ysabel on our way to Borrego Springs RV camping. Sandwich was intended for late lunch once we arrived. The bread was very dry, almost as dry and old as a cracker! What a bummer, we tossed at least 1/2 of the sandwich in order to salvage at least some edible portion.
