Writing this from inside. Took them exactly 30 mins to make two sandwiches when there were three customers inside.

On impulse, Mr. S. and the Grammy Squad took a little detour last week and ended up at Dudley's Bakery. If we were in a time machine and it was the 1970's again, this place would definitely get 5 stars. It was kind of a sad experience this time around. After building up how awesome it is to see bread baking we were really disappointed. The bread, what bread was available, sat on large baker racks waiting to be picked up. No friendly faces to greet us and definitely no sampling this past Thursday. In fact, the woman running the register seemed to really dislike her job. We did buy five loaves of bread and jar of Julian Jam's pomegranate jelly. The bread is great but not as awesome as I had remembered. I guess sometimes you can't go back in time. read more

Super disappointed in our take out sandwich order. We stopped at Dudley's at Santa Ysabel on our way to Borrego Springs RV camping. Sandwich was intended for late lunch once we arrived. The bread was very dry, almost as dry and old as a cracker! What a bummer, we tossed at least 1/2 of the sandwich in order to salvage at least some edible portion. It must have been obvious that the bread was too old to use when being prepped. Double bummer! read more

If you have not been in a long time you gotta stop here. It was completely redone on the inside and offers excellent coffee and pastries along with the bread. However be aware if you are going on a weekend be patient. ;-) read more

I can remember this place since the first time I took a drive out to Julian. I stop here every time without fail!!! The bread is so delicious and fresh, the pastries are too good to pass up even if you plan on going into Julian for the apple pie lol. My friend bought so many loaves of bread for her family and I bought the pecan maple loaf! It's good on it's own but would make a really good French toast! The staff is friendly and wonderful, the line looks long but they get to each customer pretty quickly. This place is a definite stopping point!!!! read more

The breads tasted good but they have too much preserves. We forgot we didn't finish eating half loaf of chala bread. I left it on our counter behind our fruits. That bread sat for three weeks but no mold developed. read more

A very busy but delightful bakery, coffee and cafe experience! The baked goods in particular were fresh and phenomenal - we had a cinnamon roll and blueberry scone. My iced latte was premium! Very big space inside with a lot of comfortable seating. They kept the line moving, too. Lovely place! Prefer this over the very very busy downtown Julian. read more

Drove a long way to visit Dudley's on 8/27, after enjoying there products as a child growing up in San Diego I remember their products from fundraising events and from trips with my parents to the Julian area. Was really disappointed when I arrived at the bakery today just before 1pm, only to find a sign on the door indicating they had closed early for the day so that the staff could participate in "bonding with one another." Really disappointing and frustrating as we had come a long way to purchase bread and don't get to this part of San Diego often as I now reside in the Inland Empire. Even checked their website the night before our planned visit which did not advise they would not be open til 5pm this date. If we had known about the early closure we would have skipped the trip altogether or left earlier in the day in order to arrive before 1pm, which we actually did. But the doors were already locked at 12:52pm. Sadly won't be back in this area for some time and now I'm honestly not sure I would patronize this business again. Sad day. read more

I have been enjoying Dudley's "Raisin, Ginger & Molassas Fruit Bars" for perhaps as much as 18-20 years now. So I know what I'm talking about in my review below. Sadly, I am no longer a customer :(( I sent correspondence to Dudley's back in July 2018 regarding burnt fruit bars I purchased and received a response accompanied by an offer to replace the bars. I declined knowing this was a family run business and I was sure this was just a one-off experience and I would once again enjoy the bars I had come to love-- soft, bursting with flavors of ginger and cinnamon and moistened by countless, plump raisins. Fast forward to January 8, 2019. On January 8, 2019, a co-worker/friend who lives a couple miles from Dudley's brought three bags to my office knowing how much I loved these bars. I placed a bag in the kitchen to share with my office mates. I then opened a bag and sheer sadness and disappointment overtook me. These bars were HORRIBLE. There are maybe three to five raisins in each bar (one bar, there were no raisins). The sharp ginger and cinnamon flavors were gone (as was the darker coloring of the bars) and the bars were dry. Even my office mates did not enjoy them. Such a terrible shame. Never ever thought these bars would change, but I guess economics have had a negative effect on Dudley's. I've now had two bad experiences. I wrote to Dudleys in January and welcomed a reply; none came, hence my review here. Please bring back the original recipe....please. read more

Can't recommend Dudley's Bakery enough! I stop by there every time I go on a hike and pass through Warner Springs. The Rosemary & Olive Oil bread is my favorite and is amazing when making avocado toast. Highly recommend their veggie sandwich if you're up for a bit of spice. I haven't gone wrong with any of the cookie selections. The snickerdoodles are definitely my favorite. read more

Dudley's bakery seems to continuing having issues with their "Fruit Bars" still drying out too fast in the plastic resealable bags. I had always purchased them previously at our local Sprouts store (formerly "Harry's"). The product drying out too quickly while being sold at the stores was an issue addressed by changing the packaging, to the white waxed paper bags, and finally to the plastic resealable bags, which seemed to help. I was at the Kobe Swap Meet in San Diego a couple of weeks ago and decided to take another chance and purchase a bag of the Fruit Bars. When I got home, I opened the bag to taste one of the fruit bars and to my disappointment, the product was like before, no where near soft and chewy, but hard and dry! A waste of money, and lesson finally learned! No interest in their product anymore! read more

What can I say. It's Dudleys. Soft tasty breads. Gets crazy busy here especially around the Holidays. They also bake pastries and have so many bread options. Picked up some Cinnamon Raisin for my son. He loves it. The date nut bread is awesome also. Parking easy and if they are too busy, go next door to Don's Market, they have it fresh there too. read more

Heading to Julian with a group of people and they were saying that we needed to stop at Dudley's. I asked what that was and they looked at me like I was crazy. Turns out it is the most amazing place to get bread ever! When we arrived I wasn't even planning on getting anything but once I went inside and smelled the lovely bread I couldn't stop myself. They had many choices but I ended up with a loaf of olive oil rosemary and a loaf of jalapeno cheddar. They also have other pastries and items to purchase as well as a sandwich counter and gift shop. read more

Bread, bread, bread! All types of bread. My parents have been craving like crazy, especially the date nut raisin, their best seller! Since it was buy 4 of any loaf (or fruit bars, strudels etc.) and get the 5th free, so we bought 6 loaves of date nut raisin, one pecan maple and a big apple strudel. YUM IN OUR TUMS. At their deli I ordered Rosie's Special. That sandwich was huge! I ate that sandwich like there was no tomorrow. The sauce was oozing all over my mouth and hands, the roast beef was plenty, the pineapples were sweet... everything was delicious. There's a little gift shop at a corner of the place with souvenirs, mugs, dream catchers, wooden carvings, gems, rocks.. I like rocks. read more

Sorry Dudley, but your customer service and charm has apparently worn out! We just spent a fun day at Julian and waited to get our apple pie at Dudleys (yes this is tradition). We walked into empty shelves, dissatisfied customers, and unfulfilled bellies. Someone suggested going to the grocery store next door, which we could've done at home at Stater Bros in SD. Such a shame to see a long standing local favorite go into such a sad state of business Apparently you have forgotten the happiness you brought for years and all the traditions for our families and kids up (who are now adults) to always save room for Dudley's... For our second tour stop with Pasadena City College, we were in Santa Ysabel, and they have two pie shops here - Dudley Bakery and Julian Pie Company (on the other side of the parking lot). Didn't really get a chance to browse thru Dudleys since I only had 10mins to spare, but the place smelled divine and delicious. They got your assorted apple pies as well as savory sandwiches that you can eat on the road or in there. They even got a gift shop too! Practically, your one stop shop, lol! Very cute place, just bummed that 30mins are long enough! read more

I stopped by on a Sunday afternoon I know it was pretty close to closing time but I still had 15 minutes before closing. There was one young man an employee specifically that was rushing me thru and actually physically was standing at the door pacing back and forth just staring at me, by that time it was 5 pm closing but that was such poor customer service that I just put down the items that I was going to purchase and told the guy as I was leaving that was very poor customer service and he replied very sarcastically " oh well, have a good one". I've worked customer service all my life and know that is not how you should treat your paying customers, but I guess they don't need the business.. read more

We have been stopping at Dudley's since 1983 when we lived in Borrego Springs and regularly traveled to se parents in Ventura County This is our first trip by here in 20 years but still same great selection of bread and pastry. We bought 5 loaves of the raisin date nut bread, plan to work on one and freeze the others for later. Note they are closed now on Tuesday and Wednesday, but we found that Don's Market next door has a small selection for sale. We also heard from staff that they deliver bread mid week to several stores in San Diego. read more

The bread here is so good we used to sell it for fundraisers in high school. It's a necessary stop whenever you drive to Julian. Bread time! The best ones are the Danish Apple Nut and the Raisin Date breads. The fruit bars are so good I buy two bags and bring them back with me to my home in the Bay Area. They're full of molasses and brown sugar and studded with raisins, like a nice chewy gingerbread. Their brownies are delish, too. Some local markets carry Dudley's bread (like Windmill Farms in Del Cerro), and Longs used to carry the fruit bars, but alas now I can only fill my fruit bar craving by coming to the source. (If anyone knows where I can pick them up closer to San Diego let me know.) The market next door to Dudley's (Ron's?) also carries Dudley's bread for those times when Dudley's in closed and you're super bummed (like this year for me the day after Christmas when I was making my annual pilgrimage). read more

Come to Dudley's for a sandwich and take home an armload of bread. The sandwiches are tastey, and big. I normally get a whole sandwich at the chain places...at Dudley's, the half sandwhich is bigger and better. Consider getting a whole at Dudley's and have them wrap half of it for dinner. I had the Italian...it was really good and filling. The top quality ingredients really shine through. Before leaving, it was essential to pick up a few loaves including date raisen nut, Sheepherders, monkey bread (pull apart cinnamon), and cheese jalapeno. I'd would have picked up a few more loaves except my freezer is currently full from successful hunting and fishing trips (OK, and there are a few things from Costco in there). read more

Dudley's Bakery is a must stop if you are ever in Santa Ysabel and hungry or you just want a great cup of coffee. The deli is one of San Diego's best and has been around since 1963. They make all of their own unique breads daily. Gourmet recipes that include everything from Asiago Cheese to Sun Dried Tomato, my favorite is anything Sourdough. In reading about the history of the bakery, I was amazed to learn that the original owner and name sake, Dudley Pratt, would take two months off each summer to explore Europe in search of new bread recipes that he would then bring back to San Diego and recreate for his patrons- that level of dedication and magic still shines through today. I can only imagine how incredible the bakery must smell each morning as the ovens are fired up and the loaves turn golden brown before the sun raises over the mountains. I know it may sound silly, but Dudley's is more like art than just baking - it really is that good. Whatever the occasion, when I'm in the area, I stop by to check out the specials and I at least get some deserts which are every bit as good as the breads. If you can, a stop by Dudley's is always a good call. read more

It is sad to see how much Dudley's has changed over the years. We started going to Dudleys close to 30 years ago. It was charming, the bread was great and the workers were always friendly. We drove to Dudleys as my suggestion this past Labor Day weekend. Customer service was awful!!! The woman at the register was completely unfriendly and almost rude. She dropped one of our loaves of bread on the ground next to her and then picked it up and put it in our bag. We spent over $50 on bread and 1 pie. You think she would have at least been a bit nice to us. By the way, the cherry pie with crumb topping was one on the worst pies I have had in a long time. The crust and topping was the biggest disappointment. A complete fail at $15 a pie! The crust was pale and tasteless. A generic store pie has much more flavor than this did. Everyone in our group thought the pie was awful. We are often in Warner Springs and used to love going to Dudleys. I really like supporting small business but we will pass on this bakery. They seem to have really lost caring about their customer base. read more

What happened to Dudley's? It is now so utterly charmless! The bread used to be fabulous but now it's thin and tasteless. We bought the fruit bars (have loved them for years) - and the first thing we noticed was that the color was light instead of rich brown. Even worse, they were brittle and dry. I even checked the label to see if they were manufactured in a factory but, no, it said made by Dudley's. The new? owners of Dudley's have completely lost the plot. We'll be driving right on by the next time we're on CA-78. read more
