Pre-covid, the deli was really good. The high quality meats and veggies matched the bread. The baked goods and bread are still amazing but don't bother with the over priced tasteless sandwiches. The lettuce was dirty and the meats are not good quality. read more

We stopped to charge our car and discovered this gem. The atmosphere is very comfortable with a country home feel. Sandwiches were incredible as was the New England clam chowder. Disappointing + False Advertisement: Been shopping here for over 10 years since residing in Ramona, although product remains good, customer service leaves much to be desired, just tried to place an order for take out over the phone and the young lady said without hesitation that I could not do that & that I had to be there in person (even though the website advertises a section for "Phone Orders") to which i replied: "okay no worries, then could you please set aside some scones for me?" to which the young lady on the phone, clearly mildly upset, said: "Sorry we can't do that either, we're very busy right now and we're almost out of scones" ... Would Only Recommend to Management to Update your Website and Yelp respectively to REMOVE PHONE ORDERS Section and also remove that you OFFER TAKEOUT, additionally wouldn't hurt to invest in providing customer service training to your staff. Surrounded by speed traps. I mean -if you are in the area.... and happen to be starving this is a place to eat. I will say I love how they cut and wrap a sandwich- it is proper!!! If there are two of you- I suggest you share a sandwich and 'tato salad- it is yummy and enough food unless your a total lard; and if that's the case, order your own sandwich and top it off with a pie and a extra large pop- truly, this is the place if you enjoy -refined sugar and carbs. Horrible driver, no consideration for anyone. Was at Homdepot and he decided to park his delivery van in front of there roll up door blocking my and other peoples cars in. This place has awesome sandwiches for great prices. I particularly loved the Italian sandwich. The meats were delicious and flavorful and the bread...well, this is a bakery known for bread. It was awesome. The have an amazing selection of all different breads and pastries. I also got the almond croissant, and it might have been the best I've ever had. Filled with a very generous amount of creamy almond paste, I was in love. The boyfriend had a chocolate cookie that he absolutely loved as well. The last few times we've been we've been disappointed, sandwiches aren't as big and full as they use to be. Service is so slow and customer service is lacking. The sourdough bread is no longer a full sized loaf(sandwich size) I'm not sure the reason behind making it more similar to a baguette size. Pastry's aren't as large or as good as they used to be either. Came in at about 10 minutes to 8am today to see about getting some breads to take home to my family in Arizona. Wasn't quite on the way but I figured a 10 minute drive each way was worth it. Sadly, I was mistaken. Despite what the website days about being open on Mondays from 8am to 3pm, the bakery was closed, the open sign wasnt lit, and a big poster sign on the door said closed. We bought a total of 7 loaves on Sunday 1/31/21. The place is very cute and they moved the purchases well, but the bread has gone downhill. We bought two loaves of apple/walnut bread and between two loaves, one of them had a pin-sized piece of walnut, and neither loaf had a speck of apple. We could not find anything organic. We are also not impressed with the other loaves we bought compared to when we first purchased years ago. The bread is not cheap but they are really cutting corners now. It used to be much better. One long weekend I finally decided to drive over to Julian to see what the hype was all about. After a while of driving along long winding curvy roads we got to a mall full of stores so we parked and took a little walk around. Ended up walking into Dudley's Bakery. As you walk in there's tons of little trinkets and souvenirs and turquoise jewelry that reminded me of the kind of truck stops/trading posts you see on the highways further out a few states over. Hung out here for a bit - long enough to have some apple pie and cider. Bathrooms are kept quite clean. Cashier at the bakery section came across as if the communists were coming so we figured nah we don't need any bread - let's just GTFO. Nice pit stop but that's about it. First sign of civilization as you're coming from Ramona. Plenty of parking. read more

I came here for lunch with some friends during a day trip to Julian. Lots of easy parking, several sandwich options made to order, friendly staff and some seating for eating in. I got the meatball sandwich special, and it was $5 and largely portioned. An extra bonus to this place is the bakery in the back of freshly made bread, strudels, etc. read more

The little store in the front is cool. We've gotten a few wind chimes and geodes from there. Sandwiches are nothing to write home about, very basic. I mainly go for the bread and sweets. (2 loaves just under $10) I'm not the type to stray from my dark russian rye bread.. Bread in and of itself is a no no for me, since it's all starch and carbs.... but I just had to try this place-- it was highly recommended and so famous as a hotspot. If your headed this way STOP BY! Ok, Dudley's, what the hell has happened to your bread? The cheese bread used to be MARBLED with thick veins of cheese. Not anymore. The Jalapeno Bread used to be dense and moist and chewy and spicy and now it's a light loaf of nothingness. I bought the "buy 4 get the 5th free" deal and gave a couple loaves to family members. Older family members... who clearly remember how great this bread used to be and they were...well.. graciously appreciative and then expressed that it just wasn't the same anymore. I still only buy the 'unsliced' bread because I don't like the skinny slices they now offer. There is a new bakery here in town and I'm going to try it. I'll let ya know how that turns out.... Famous for their bread, the bakery also has pastries, a deli counter, and a gift shop. It makes for a great stopping point when passing through on the way to Julian, Warner Springs, or Borrego Springs. THE GOODS: I have many memories from my childhood of holding and promptly devouring a slice of Dudley's Date Nut Raisin bread as my family drove through to any of the numerous campgrounds in the area or into Julian for the day. We would almost always come away with a couple loaves for later at home too. If there's a certain kind of bread you're looking for, they likely have it. If not, you'll find something you'll enjoy on the winding racks of fresh-baked breads inside the bakery. My gold standard Potato Bread is made here; it's my absolute favorite. So moist and mildly flavorful! THE VERDICT: GO GO GO!! -- This place is a San Diego tradition; it's been around for ages and rightfully so with delicious products and a strong local following. read more

I had plenty of experience going to Dudley's while growing up in San Diego and visiting our family's farm in Ramona. So on this occasion, I decided to take the 1.5 hour drive out from the Desert to pick up some bread. I have to say that over the last couple years, there have been some changes to the quality of the bread. The breads are lighter and fluffier then in the past, and I do not seem to enjoy the German Brown or pumpernickel (man I need to change my safety word) as I did in the past. I found the jalapeño and cheese to be lacking flavor and the sourdough tasted pedestrian. They do have a good crowd of people there for their sandwiches; which makes me think that on our next visit through this area, we may stop for a sandwich and pass on buying bread. read more

Stopped by later in the day on a Sunday at about 3pm. The store was a bit quiet and only had a few employees at the time. We did the usual. We bought some bread and then also ordered five sandwiches at the deli counter. There was no line at the deli counter. So our order was taken almost immediately. We had no trouble getting a table inside. The young lady at the deli counter was nice. But, because she was by herself it took almost 40 minutes to get our order of 5 sandwiches. The sandwiches tasted great. But, 40 minutes is a bit of a long wait. Would I buy sandwiches here again? Definitely. But, I'll bring something to do while I wait. read more

While this place makes great bread they are horrible as a deli. Holiday weekend and they are understaffed at the one hour mark for three deli sandwiches. Watching those that bitch get their tickets filled. I watched them ask the status and the girls pull the ticket over. It is what I saw and the owner saying it is not true is irrelevant. I guess I need to become an ass or never come back. I pick never come back. This choice was validated by the owners rebuttal. They know it is high season and so they should staff and organize accordingly.....but I guess they have no incentive since the line is out the door no matter how bad the service is......How about hiring someone....help the economy......every dollar they earn is spent eight more times in the community. read more

I don't get what the big deal is about Dudley's. I think once a business makes it past the 20-year mark, they get some sort of legend status. Maybe it's because it's one of a few business within the small town of Santa Ysabel. There's not much of a choice for desserts and breads around. Their breads are pretty good and their pastries are sugary and gooey like they should be. I'd give it four stars but they need to take down the pictures of Ronald Reagan and other GOPers who they apparently idolize. I don't eat no Republican bread. read more

After the drive to/from Julian Dudley's is the perfect stop! Their sandwiches are HUGE! And I mean HUGE! If you are not absolutely starving there's no reason that you can't split with a friend (unless you want to take the rest home to eat later- which I did) The French Dip was superb! The roast beef was piled high and the cheese was melted beautifully. The hubby went for a Reuben and he was super impressed. Even he was super full! For two sandwiches, chips, and a soda the meal was about $21. But then again I really had a full lunch the following day easily! We went on a mini road trip this weekend and drove up to Dudleys for some sandwiches. We had been there before for bread, but had never tried out the deli. For around $9 you can get a sandwich combo which included drink and chips. And before you scoff at the price, let me tell you....The sandwiches were huge and stuffed with so much meat! I had turkey on jalapeno cheese bread, and it was delicious. It was even great the next day, didn't turn soggy or anything! Drove through the area on my latest trip to Borrego, hoping to stop in here for some treats...kept right on driving when I saw the Gadsen flag flying at their door. Used to stop for in pastries, won't be back for the tea. **Update** Was contacted by the owner recently. Apparently they hung the flag in support of Marines & not in support of the Tea Party movement and have since taken the flag down to avoid confusion. I am sooooooo relieved that Dudley's will continue to be a great place for me and my family to stop in on trips to/from the mountains & desert. I had high hopes for this place as my husband said it was a great family tradition to stop here all the time with his family. The inside felt so dreary and weird. Just didn't make me feel like I was in a bakery. But that's beside the point. I got a blackberry scone from the case, which was pretty good; however, I got a loaf of the Cinnamon Pull-Apart bread and I was so sad. I grabbed it fast as my family was waiting outside, but when I got in the car and read the ingredients I was so bummed! Seriously, I could've bought this at any grocery store. This is where tourist go to buy 7.5 ounce jars of Bee Pollen for $19.95 when you can get an 8 ounce jar online for $6! or perhaps you would like a 12 ounce jar of honey for $8.50? I guess I was suckered, but I wont be going back soon..... And I agree with what other reviewers have said about the ingredients of the bread, it seems more mass produced now, just like any bread you could get at the grocery store.
