Weird place... Huge bakery with several large cases of pastry and cookies, and then racks of bread of all sorts, and then a coke machine but NO MILK!! YOU ARE A BAKERY SERVE MILK!!! who wants cookies and MILK? ANYONE? HMM? You want some cake? A strudel stick? How about some milk? NOPE... SORRY NO MILK!!! MILK MILK MILK!!! GET SOME MILK! Seriously people! MILK! Anyway the cookies were good, the pastries less so, but I guess the bread is tasty... Who knew? The staff are all funny high-schoolers, and the kid who sold me my cookie, said: "If you eat the cookie before i get back its free" he had gone to get my diet coke... the cookie cost $.35 yeah that's thirty-five cents it hardly seemed worth the rush... Always love stopping by here to buy the bread. Freshly made loaves of Jalapeno, Jalapeno Cheddar and the fruit bars are so good. The Jalapeno makes awesome grilled cheese sandwiches. Their deli sandwiches are really good and quite big. You could make at least two or three more sandwiches from all of the meat they put into them! I don't like the fact that they make you snake through a maze to get to the bread and they only have one cashier now? Plus they did the same thing with the gift shop where they made it really narrow and hard to get to the isles if there are more than one or two people trying to look at jewelry or other souvenirs. Loved this place since childhood. If you've never been... It's one of the 'must dos' in San Diego county. $5 for a loaf of bread you say? Yes and take two, you'll thank yourself later. I don't know why, but I'm not going crazy over their breads even though they're good. had the Date Raisin loaf and also tried the California Roast Beef Sandwich (lots of meat and love how they grill the bread so that every bite is crunchy). Also, the Raisin Ginger Molasses Fruit Bar was recommended by yelpers so I wondered myself what these taste like. SPOILER ALERT: it taste like just like gingerbread cookies (very gingery). This place is fantastic, go here. The bread is awesome, I have purchased 5-6 different types of the bread and they are all aces. The flagship is the Date Nut Bread and just as Julian is powered by pie and in the pocket of Big Apple, Santa Ysabel's economy is based on the combo of dates, raisins & yeast. The line is tortuously long on weekends but you will realize that it's worth the wait as you plow through your sixth or seventh piece of Dudley's loaf-shaped bliss. Me likey. read more

Dudley's Bakery is another required stop on the road to Julian, and today, the line was nice and short, so we were in and out quickly. Dudley's has been in business for almost 50 years, which is not surprising, considering that they make the best bread I've ever had! This time we got the Asiago Cheese & Black Olive, Cheddar Jalapeno, and Pecan Maple (a new flavor - tastes like pancakes). On past visits I've also really enjoyed the Potato and Date Nut Raisin loaves. Great sandwich and service! I asked for my sandwich to be lettuce wrapped and they accommodated me and made it into a salad instead. They even double checked my daughter's super basic sandwich. ~ Greetings, ~ Where do I begin to tell this tale of story....~ Now, we were on our way yesterday to stop by Julian CA to spent some time, there~ We gathered up with our tour bus, and arrived at " Dudley's Bakery...around 12:00 noonish.....prior our final departure at Julian... ~ Our tour guide spoke and spoke, and spoke of what a great bakery this place is~ You know, from the first moment, I felt it was just an advertisement for this place~ With me I had one of my Dear Friend's which pretty much raised and breaded in Europe, and has much knowledge about baking different kinds of breads, sweets and savory, and main dishes~ I, myself....also bake, cook different types of food, and create recipes~ ~ Now, where do I begin....first and for most...it's a touristy attraction, extremely busy....to a point that you what to say... au revoir until tomorrow...and maybe next day...OR maybe forever.... ~ Then...at the entrance....you don't see any bakery...you practically walk into a metaphysical corner, where anything from dream catchers, to gemstones such as clear quartz, fluorite, and pink quartz and so on and so forth~ ~ The energy of the place is so scattered.....then, you walk all the way back to find your true gems....the bakery section....line as long as line going to Egypt with a camel....then, you can't really pick any bread....you have to wait in line, and it's during that time....when....you can pick and chose any loaf of bread.....~ Now, prior to that moment...I am thinking sort of to myself....that I am walking to purchase really artesian....home made sort of breads....~ Please....just stop by your local grocery shops....you will get much authentic breads..... ~ Okay....We kept picking and looking at the breads...then...putting them down, individually..; nothing sounded to our taste....date and walnut bread....oh...Why...No..no...no....then...cheddar and jalapeno...how ancient is that.....People were buying these breads as if it's the end of the world, and there aren't enough supply of bread left to go around ......Lollllll..... ~ We were looking at each other...then...we said let's just leave...we were almost about to pay...then, my friend and I, purchased one pumpernickel loaf each...we look at each, and we jetted out of there...Lollllllllllllllllllll ~ Now....tasting result....we came back, and tried the bread.......pumpernickel.....Now...which part?!?!?!.....it tasted so extraordinarily delicious...Lolllllllllll..., I wanted to ask the driver to stop by again....so we can purchase dozen and dozens of them....Lollllllllllllllllll....You can just imagine what we tasted.......~ Maybe in another world that we didn't know of that's how pumpernickel breads tasted like............... ~ End of story read more

My Brother and I always take a day road trip up to Dudley's when we are craving sandwiches and their bread!!! I walked in to Dudley's today (through a random side door because the front doors are locked), and did not recognize it. It looks like a mostly-empty warehouse. I have been patronizing Dudley's for 40+ years and have seen changes over the years, but always improvements for the better. This was not good. Instead of having one counter for those who are ordering sandwiches and one for buying bread, there is one place for everything now, and while the line was only about 8 people long, the wait was ridiculous. I was told by an employee that this was apparently the vision of the new owners. WOW. You take an almost 60-year old, well-known San Diego institution and immediately render it unrecognizable? Crazy!! I haven't tasted the bread I bought today, but I'm hoping the reviews I just read about it not being as good are wrong ... that would be a terrible shame. read more

I've been going here since I was a kid ( I'm 39) My typical purchase is the Jalapeño bread and the fruit bars. I'm not sure if they changed their recipe or maybe they outsourced the production of their bread. but the quality definitely isn't there anymore. The bread has become super dry and the same goes for the fruit bars. I thought maybe I got a bad batch, but sadly every purchase has been slightly more and more disappointing. My biggest complaint is the fruit bars. Not only are they dry and crumbly, but there's barely any fruit in them anymore. We stop here at least once a month when we ride up to the mountains (this bakery is biker friendly so a great half way stop from the coast) The bear claws are always great but today as we had our kids with us we ordered the brownies. I've been coming to Dudley's Bakery for over a decade and they never fail to disappoint. From their fruit bars to their jalapeno cheddar bread, I've had it all. You can get most of their breads or bars at Henry's but it's like going to Fiji for their water it's just better from the source. So on my way to Santa Ysabel my pitstop always has me picking up loaves for my friends and family. Most frequent requests are the Cinnamon Raison and Jalapeno Chedder. read more

This is always a fun place to stop on the way to Julian. Dudley's Bakery has a deli where you can get sandwiches and a gift shop. But the bakery is where the magic happens. I was really surprised at not only how much fresh bread they had for sale, but the variety as well. We bought a loaf of the sweet French bread and it was excellent. Also purchased was a bag of their molasses fruit and raisin bars, which to be honest didn't sound appealing to me. I changed my mind quickly when I tried one though. They were delicious! I'm not from California and I had no idea that Dudley's has their items for sale in large grocery chains in the area. It was a very pleasant surprise to walk into an Albertsons and see those same molasses fruit and raisin bars for sale. Score! I wouldn't make a special trip to come here, especially since you can buy their products elsewhere, but if I was in the area you can bet that I would stop here. read more

This shop has an extensive selection of sliced breads that you have to try if you are in this area. The date nut bread is one that you can't find anywhere else, with a good amount of dates and walnuts. I also got the rosemary olive oil bread, which has a beautiful aroma even through the packaging. The shop is kinda dinky and in the middle of nowhere, but if you are driving through that way anyways, you should stop and get a loaf of bread. The breads taste ok, but when I looked closer I realized these breads have more preservatives, artificial colors & flavors than any bread I've had before. I love the fresh baked pastries and bread from Dudley's but considering it's out in the middle of nowhere it's really hard to rationalize a trip JUST for that. I try a one-two combo of Dudley' and Mom's Apple Pie to seal the deal. After all it does take over an hour for me to get there. They are only open 4 days a week, so make sure you check before you drop-in. The bakery is almost always packed full of people with a line out of the door the three times I have been there. The prices are decent but there is a wide variety of items to choose from. I guarantee they have something for everyone, unless you despise delicious baked products. In that case, stop reading now. This place must have over 20 different types of bread from date nut to rosemary olive. Talk about selection, right? In addition to the bread they also sell fruit bars, baked treats and have a deli in the same building. This makes for a great pit-stop on your way up or down the mountain to Julian. This may not be the best bread or bakes goodies you ever have but after a long drive it hits the spot. Give it a try and decide for yourself! read more

If you like the outdoors then there's some awesome little towns situated in the Laguna mountains east of San Diego. Warner Springs has a nice open valley and serves as a stop for Pacific Crest Trail hikers on their 2650 mile trek to or from Canada. There's also Julian for apple pie and Lake Cuyamaca (sounds funny - I know). Finally, at the cross roads between both of the above towns sits little Santa Ysabel (it's actually much larger than it looks) and Dudley's is right there. After a recent backpack trip to the wind caves in Anza Borrego, we stopped at Dudley's to get out of the rain and get some warm food. The workers let me in - despite my muddy shoes and I ordered hot veggie soup and half a veggie sandwich. I warmed up fast and even had some apple pie. Sure, it's a cafeteria style place and the lines get long, but the experience was worth it. I like: - They let us in with muddy shoes - that's notable - Fast service - you won't be in line that long - Bread bits with your order of soup - Fresh baked goods I dunno - They gave my order to someone else, but fixed it fast - Won't serve warm slices of pie - that matters Overall, go here if you want another choice for pie, but you won't get the warm pie / cold ice cream combo you'd find nearby. You have to go here if you haven't been before. This should be on every tourists list to do. Before you get into Julian, which in and of itself is a nice romantic and nostalgic place to visit, you have to stop at Dudleys! I used to sell this bread when I was a kid for school fundraisers. They have a large selection form Jalapeno cheddar to Apple Walnut to Classic German Black breads. They also sell traditional Julian Apple pies and like a fat kid I always sneak a crumble apple piece of pie at the end of my order. It's so good and inexpensive. Loaves are $4 a pop but if you buy three loaves you get the fourth one free. Yummy yummy yummy! read more

One of the best parts of going to Julian is that on the way home we get to stop at this bakery called Dudley's. They make the best breads there, my favorites have to be the cheddar cheese bread and my new favorite: Garlic Sourdough. We bought a ton of different loaves, but I took those two home with me back to San Jose.
