In our San Diego book it stated Julian as a place to visit and states Dudley's Bakery is a MUST STOP location. When we arrived I understood why. So much fresh bread makes this place the best stop of our trip. There are so many choices of bread, we did not know what to choose. We ended up purchasing a cinnamon pull apart bread and a cinnamon raisin bread. The Cinnamon pull apart was very delicious, it was soft, gooey, and sticky. We ate half the bread that same day. The Cinnamon raisin bread was soft and sweet for breakfast. I feel bad I didn't buy more. read more

They ran out of the top 3 breads I wanted to try. BOO, and it wasn't that late in the day. :( But the Shepherder's bread (fourth choice) was excellent. Very filling... not so airy and squishable, like supermarket brands. The bag itself was very heavy; you could tell it was quality bread. The lemon-filled pastry (minus the lemon part) was WAY TOO SWEET... made me feel ill. The lemon part was amazing, though. The line was way too long... and since they didn't have the bread I really wanted (sun-dried tomato or sourdough, I think), it was kind of not worth standing for 20 minutes. Some of the best bread in the world. No trip to Julian is complete without stopping here and picking up a loaf or 7. I've given them as dinner gifts instead of wine, and everyone loves them. Literally the best Potato Bread in existence. Perfect taste and consistency. Jalepeno Bread, multiple kinds. Fantastic. What's even more amazing is getting a sandwich on freshly made bread. Phenomenal. There's a great little pasture in the back with picnic tables. It just feels so country. If you drive all the way to Julian for some pie, then duh-duh-dudley's is a must! I was at first a bit taken aback since it pretty much seemed like I was in Costco's bread aisle. But Dudley beats them in variety. They had over a dozen to choose from, but the one that made me drool was their jalapeno bread. They recently added a deli, so we filed out our order and waited patiently to stuff our face. Kid's Grilled Cheese on Jalapeno Bread - OMG, one of the best grilled cheese just because of the awesome chucks of jalapenos they put in their bread. So good! I'm starting to drool just thinking about it again. The price is killer awesome too, hah^^ ~I don't want to grow up, I'm a Toys R Us Kid~ Fruit Bars - Keep hearing about their darn fruit bars, so I go pick it up and was so confused; ginger and molasses? Why the freak is it called a fruit bar?!?! Sucks for the folks who were looking forward to eating a fruit bar that had fruit in it and not ginger and molasses. The bread smelled good, but the selection was lacking in artisan variety. This isn't the place to go unless you're a sliced bread aficionado or just want fairly cheap, fresh bread. I passed on the bread, but did buy a few turnovers that were tossed in the fridge and toasted up two days later. The pastry dough came out incredibly flaky and crisp, which was good, although messy and a little dry in the corners without filling. - Apple turnover: Delicious. The filling wasn't too gooey, tart, sweet, or spiced (I don't like too much cinnamon with apples). I'm guessing that they used the nice local Julian apples. I was very pleased with this one, especially since apple turnovers are one of my favorite pastries and I've had many that fall short. - Lemon turnover: So-so. The flavor of the gel-like filling was too zesty and overpowering, so I ended up scraping out most of it. You have to come here if you're nearby. When I'm in SD, I drive out of my way to come here because Dudley's bread is just something I was weened on. Granted, there are A LOT of places in San Diego to buy delicious bread. Dudley's has been around so long that they sell their bread out of stores all over San Diego now. It's kind of crazy. The first time I saw Dudley's bread in a store near my house (nowhere near Santa Ysabel) I was so excited! AND NOW IT IS EVERYWHERE! But yeah. Go with friends. They have a great deal where if you buy four loaves you get one for free. All the loves are big and all delicious. I would never ever ever come out towards Santa Ysabel and NOT STOP in at Dudley's. It just doesn't happen. I haven't been in almost a year so I cannot attest to the reviews saying the bread has changed. I REALLY HOPE THE BREAD HASN'T CHANGED but according to the reviews it may have :/ which would be SUPER depressing but also completely understandable given their rise in demand. ... 20 year sago this icon of an establishment would have received a 4 star rating from me, as I have literally been stopping by here for nearly 40+ years when my father would swing through on our way back from Julian / Cuyamaca. But, this is a rating for the past two stops (in January and May, 2017). I can lament about the good ol' days when you could watch them prepare and bake the bread across from the counter tops, but I am sure that that came to an end due to some California Health & Safety laws; or due to the massive growth from those good ol' days causing them to bake some of their product off site. But, I digress... I have stopped here at least once or twice a year for quite some time, so I think this will be a fair assessment of the business TODAY: The quality of bread has diminished significantly over the years, but these last two visits has almost assured I will stop buying what I believed was once some of the finest locally baked bread in SD County. In January I purchased three loaves: Sourdough, Julian Apple Nut and their Multi-grain. Of the three the sourdough bread was edible to the point of consuming the entire loaf over 1.5 weeks. I guess it would be pretty hard to screw up sourdough. The Julian Apple Nut was VERY, VERY, disappointing. Not only was the general taste lacking, unless you loaded it with butter (you would actually need "apple butter" to near the correct flavor as advertised), but I could not find one SINGLE piece of apple OR nut in any SINGLE slice! Very, very disappointing. If they were trying to use an extract flavoring that did not even work in the batch used for the loaf I purchased. Why give it this name, if you are not even going to use the actual physical ingredients? I tossed the loaf... I bought the multi-grain for the wife and I have to agree - terrible and tasteless, too. She tossed that loaf. Stopped in again two weeks ago. Sourdough, good to go. I was not going to gamble with my wallet on any of the others, due to my previous disappointment. However, my buddies did. One purchased the Julian Apple Nut. I warned him, but he rolled the dice. We went outside the store and he opened up his loaf. He literally flipped through each slice and found NOT one piece of apple or nut encased. He looked at me astonishingly and stated, "you weren't kidding bro!" I was disappointed for him, hoping my experience from a few months earlier was an anomaly. He did not take it back in, but thought he would give it a shot at home. He later texted me that he had to lather it up with 'apple butter' spread (see above LOL). I did purchase a pastry this latest go-around, their round coffee cake with sliced almonds atop it. I will admit that it was quite tasty, but you better eat it within a couple days or it will go stale. I am a creature of habit and have no doubt I will stop in here in the future, as I drive by and it is open for business. I'll revise my ratings if deemed worthy. Really yummy bread here~! I love bread, and I used to think Schat's in Bishop was the best place for it, but the flavors at Dudley's are more diverse and more true to what I'd expect. The Rosemary bread was definitely my favorite, though I also liked the Cheese/Jalapeno/Blue Cheese and Date ones as well. I came with a bunch of friends, so we easily earned 2 free loaves (it's buy 4, get 1 free). We also took advantage of the free casino play ($5) at the Santa Ysabel Casino, where I happened to win $25. The lady who rang us up was very friendly, too. read more

When heading to Julian it's a must to stop by for bread & sweets. I always get bread for family & friends. They have a great selection of breads, rolls, strudels, sweets, jams, etc. I don't have a favorite one because it's hard to choose just one. But, you can buy 4 loaves and get one free. The average price is about $6 for bread, but it's definitely worth every penny. There's is a deli inside, so you can pick up a hearty sandwich. I love Dudley's bread! I stopped in yesterday on our way back from apple picking to get a loaf or two and ended up walking out with 5 thanks to the buy 4 get one free. I got the standard Date Nut Raisin, but then also grabbed Jalapeno Cheddar, Maple Pecan, Hawaiian Sweet, and Sweet French. It must have been awhile since the last time I was in Dudley's because I honestly don't remember them having so many different flavors. It was hard for me to choose from all of the offerings, next time I want to grab a loaf of the Squaw, it looked really good. If you are in the market for an apple pie, the caramel apple is addictive! It had been a couple years since my last visit to Dudley's Bakery in Santa Ysabel and I was really looking forward to purchasing a couple loaves of bread hoping it was every bit as good as I remembered it. I bought a loaf each of Apple Nut and Irish Potato breads and I was sorely disappointed in both loaves. Both were dry, sliced paper thin and had none of the good yeasty homemade flavor and texture that I recall from prior visits. Now for a review by someone who actually WENT to Dudley's and not someone who is commenting on the bread that they picked up at some "market" here in San Diego. Dudley's was kind of a let down I hate to say. The place has this huge bakery which looks like it doesn't get used much. When we went there on Sunday 8/31/08, they were all out of just about any bread people wanted. There were a lot of touristy types there, and everyone was asking, "Do you have this? No? Well what about this? No?" Oddly enough, we went to the grocery store located right next to the place, and found a better selection THERE of Dudley's bread. So we decided to eat some sandwiches while we were there, and those were actually pretty good, but be prepared to pay about 22 dollars for two sandwiches. Yeah. Kinda on the pricey side. My girlfriend found an ant floating in her iced tea. And a lot of the tables inside were dirty, so we had to eat in that separated area near the restrooms. The people who work at Dudley's were the high point of the experience. They seemed very friendly, knowledgable and hard working. From the young girl in the bakery, to the older woman at the sandwich counter. I would have to say that any problems that I've mentioned here are most likely NOT their fault, rather the fault of the management. I've lived in San Diego longer than most people I know, and believe me, I would LOVE to give this place more stars. There was a time when Dudley's was worth a long drive just to buy a loaf of their wonderful Raisin Date Nut, Potato, or OMG their Cheddar bread! It was fresh, hot, full of ingredients, rich, and dense. It had that home made quality you came to expect of Dudley's. It's just so ordinary now. Their bread isn't any better than what you can buy at the grocery store. In fact, I bought a loaf of their famous Cheddar bread today and it was hard, stale, and crumbled apart. It was horrible and had to be thrown out! I bought five other loaves of different flavors and they were at best, OK. It makes me sad to see what has happened to Dudley's. The quality has declined steadily over the years. I don't get the 4 and 5 star ratings given by previous customers. I can only guess they are influenced by the great location, fine tradition, amazing selection, a restroom stop, and their still yummy-after-all-these-years...Fruit Bars! I recently bought a loaf of dudley's date nut bread from Sprouts. They have really chopped down the quality. I remember this being a hearty, delicious loaf. Now it tastes like a typical processed bread. It used to be a dense loaf with thick slices. Now it's full of air, very light, no weight to it. Skinny slices. It is such poor quality that the slices will not hold up in a toaster; they break up. Someone took a good product and ran it into the ground. read more

I stopped at Dudley's on 4/28/18 for the first time in several years. I was surprised to find the parking lot almost empty because, in the past, weekends were a madhouse. I bought 5 loafs of bread hardly being able to contain myself from sampling them before I arrived home. When home, I tried 2 different types of the bread and they were dry and hard; not fresh at all. I love the new look of Dudley's. It is fresh and modern, yet comfortable and cozy. Pastries are much better than before, their brownie is to die for. Staff is friendly and trying really hard to accommodate every guest. They sell my favorite local jams that you cannot find anywhere else, as well as local produced honey and beauty products. Fun and exciting atmosphere that is not only homey and welcoming but it also modern and stylish! l love coming to dudley's to grab a quick sandwich or even just one of their pastries. Seriously, they have some of the most delicious chocolate chip cookies I have ever had. stopped by on the drive to julian, and onto pine valley. not sure what i was expecting to see here, but even around lunchtime, there were maybe 3 customers. maybe i would have been more likely make some purchases if there were a lot of customers. i fumbled around with some of the breads, and the fruit bars didn't appear all that appetizing. i wanted to buy something at least, so i bought a few peanut butter cookies, which were okay. they were soft, at least.
