When I saw that Dumpling Story had opened on Fillmore, I was super excited to try it! I visited with a friend for lunch on a weekday, and it was pretty busy. Still, we waited less than 5 minutes for a table and the service was good. I really liked the ordering system - they give you a laminated menu and a dry erase marker so you can mark down what you want and they can still reuse the menu later. Overall, I thought everything we ordered was pretty good! We ordered the Brussels Sprouts with Truffle Salt, Tofu with Sweet Soy Sauce, and Vegetable Bao. I thought both the Brussels Sprouts and the Tofu were amazing - they were both seasoned perfectly and had a nice texture. I liked the Vegetable Bao too, but it was not as flavorful. For San Francisco, I thought the price was reasonable but more on the high end compared to other places I've been recently. Most menu items were $3-4 dollars more than I would have expected. I think the price is worth it for the quality of the food, but something to keep in mind. read more

As a big fan of Dumpling Home, I tried Dumpling Story as soon as I saw it and I was not disappointed Food: I crave these dumplings just about every day! The XLB has the most perfect thin skin and most delicious soup. The pan fried juicy pork bao is everything I could ever want in a dumpling. The green beans are crispy and delicious. You basically can't go wrong here! Service: kind and efficient! we had no complaints, our server was great Ambience: cozy and chic! I am in love with the decor here. It's definitely more of an upscale vibe compared to Dumpling Home Overall, it is on the pricey side for a casual bite, but I think it's worth it. The wait times aren't as crazy as Dumpling Home (for now) and I'll be back soon! read more

Pretty decent spot for XLBs. Service is quick and the interior of the place is super modern and cute! I got the XLBs, pan fried pork baos, brussel sprouts and dan dan noodles! I personally liked all the dishes we got and would recommend trying this spot at least once if you're in the area. read more

Came here with my daughter and her new boyfriend. She's been so difficult since the divorce, I think this new boyfriend is another way for her to act out. The pan fried boa is amazing, I had the beef and the vegetable, highly recommended. Her boyfriend is awful, I swear this Neanderthal is barely literate. What happened to my baby girl. The Brussels sprouts are fantastic too, I didn't know they're grew so small. read more

Decent dumplings, although it's missing a little bit of spice. The DanDan noodles are simply okay and could stand to have a little bit more chili oil. The pan-fried dumplings are pretty good if you're in the mood for a bit of fried food. read more

I didn't know this until I got to the restaurant, but this location is actually the sister restaurant of the widely popular Dumpling Home. Dumpling Home/Story is the best Chinese restaurant in the Bay and this is coming from a someone who has grown up eating chinese food all her life! After trying Dumpling Home in Hayes Valley, I knew I had to try Dumpling Story on Fillmore. I heard there was a long wait so we made sure to come right around 5--we were one of the first ones to be seated. It's a beautiful restaurant, just take a look at the interior! We ordered lots of dumplings to try, but my personal favorite was the pork xiao long bao. They wont pop when you pick them up and are so juicy! The food is amazing. But please be careful w the soup dumping. Like, I guess I bitt too much and a flood of magma-hot juice shot right up my nose. I was really high and I forgot that she warned us. Delicious, but you need to start w a tiny nibble to release the internet pressure. The staff contends for "nicest staff on Fillmore St." I really appreciated their good energy. I'm super excited that this place opened in the neighborhood! The interior is beautifully designed - simple but elegant. Their Hayes Valley location is already known for the best dumplings far and wide, especially the xiao long bao. And I'm happy to report that the dumplings as well as the noodles here are equally delicious. The service is also polite and attentive. What I'm most thankful for is that they have fried bao with a filling other than meat, which is usually impossible to find. They could be slightly larger though. But if they also add sheng jian bao with shrimp filling I'll probably be here every day! read more

Sister restaurant to Michelin Bib Dumpling Home in Hayes Valley and the food is just as good here. Of course got the famous Juicy Pork Bao. The restaurant space is smaller than Dumpling Home but is super nice, clean, and modern. It can get hard to get a table though because of how small the restaurant is. I came in on a Sunday night right when they opened at 5. Got seated right away, and by 5:20pm, all tables were full. Ordered the Juicy Pork Bao and Pork Xiao Long Bao. The Juicy Pork Baos were hot (temperature) wise as advertised, but so juicy and delicious. I would come back and get them again. Great service, staff, and food came out super fast. We've dined here about 5 times -- and had take-out once. Every visit, and nearly every dish....delicious! Work your way around the vast menu to find the items (and cooking styles) that you really like. And then go for it. You really can't be disappointed by anything here. The Chicken Dumplings in Sesame and Chili Oil are hall-of-fame worthy. The kitchen is visible through glass and it's busy and spotless. The table service is top notch, swift, and perfectly executed. Stopped in here for lunch on a Saturday when we visited San Fran on a business trip. Excellent all the way around. It was busy; but they have a kiosk for checking in, which we did. 5 minutes later seated. Tried a few of the baos- so good! Great tasting cuisine here. Also, the service is great! What a surprise and delight! My friend saw this dumpling place on Facebook and said, We gotta go!! I am so glad we did! I'm not an expert but I've been looking for the perfect soup dumpling (Xiao Long Bao) since I had my first in New York City at Joe's Shanghai in Chinatown. 15 years later I think I've found them! Dumpling Story is now my favorite! So much soup in the dumpling and for the first time in 10 long years, not a single dumpling on my plate or my friend's plate split, leaked or broke!! There is no greater satisfaction when your dumpling is eaten whole and soupy! And no greater disappointment when it sticks to the paper and you watch all that deliciousness drain away from you to settle on the table under your bamboo steamer!! While visiting San Francisco for the weekend, I was craving some truly delicious food and stumbled upon this place--and I still can't stop thinking about how amazing it was. We ordered the beef brisket udon soup, which was incredible. It felt like it healed my soul. We also had the beef dumplings, which were perfect and clearly homemade. The wings were my favorite, though it's hard to choose since everything was so delicious. The service was excellent, and the ambiance was just right. My family and I saw this place nearby and wanted to check it out. The design inside was very different. Almost like a futuristic type of design I want to say. We were greeted right when we walked in and they were super nice checking on us and would ask if we had any questions with the menu. As for the food, it was ok. Maybe the flavoring was off but I just felt like something was missing. If you have time to wait, I would eat at Dumpling Home instead. If you need a quick fix-this place will do! read more

Beware!!! Soup is hot!!! Carefully rip a hole and let the soup cool down before eating. My friends and I order the cucumber salad, chicken pan fried dumplings, and pork soup dumplings. The pan fried dumplings are soup dumplings as well which I didn't know. The soup is extra hot so don't risk it and take a bite and have the soup gush all over the place. Speaking from my own experience . The broth for both dumplings were flavorful and comforting. The pan fried dumplings were not oily, which was surprising and the skin was more bao/bread like which complimented the hard, crusty bottom. The soup dumplings had a thin, slightly chewy skin. It's so hard to find soup dumplings that get it right. Make sure to eat quickly before they get cold though! The cucumber salad was too salty in my opinion so maybe I'll pass next time unless you're craving something salty (like that intense chip craving you get randomly), but it didn't taste pretty fresh! Overall I would definitely go here especially if it's not too busy inside. We went later at night around at 8ish on a weekday and we waited 20/30 mins? It wasn't too crowded since it was closing at 9pm after we came but it was full of groups and couples, maybe not the best place to have a solo self care restaurant date. It was worth the wait tho! So delicious! You can join the yelp waitlist and shop around in the meantime since there's a bunch of fun shops :-) read more

Two words. Wowww wweeee. This place is so good and had a great atmosphere. Definitely get an order of the steamed pork dumplings. We also got the smashed cucumber and ginger scallion noodles. As someone from Shanghai (the birth place of xiaolongbao) this is by far the best xiaolongbao I've had in the US! I've never found similar quality for this price even in nyc. I would even say it's on the same level as the ones in shanghai. I will definitely visit often. The beef brisk noodle was also amazing!! Both dishes were 10/10. read more

Food: I enjoyed the food. I think other people would enjoy it too. I really like the soup dumplings and pig ear. I think its hard to go wrong with the food here, and I don't think that there would be many complaints about it if you ordered from here. Service: The service was very good. When the waiters noticed empty plates they would take it pretty quickly. Anything I asked for they would provide for immediately. I believe they also filled water frequently Ambience: the place is definitely smaller than I expected. We had a party of maybe 11, and we took up half the restaurant space. Decided to try this place out on a whim with the craving of some dumplings but what took the spot light was their DanDan noodles ... it's so goooddd. I find that most places I go to with DanDan noodles don't have grounded meat like Dumpling Story does. And if they do have grounded meat, it's not spicy at all. I also enjoyed their cucumber salad ! Their Xiaolongbaos were soupy which is good. Also really enjoyed the pairing of the spicy wontons with the DanDan noodles, excellent taste for both. Service was good, the servers were quick to refill our water and ask if everything was good. Moreover, I love the interior of the place, it's aesthetically pleasing along with the utensils which were really heavy and good material, presentation here is everything! I just had a delightful dining experience at Dumpling Story! The braised beef noodle soup was surprisingly light and refreshing, perfect for a satisfying yet not-too-heavy meal. Food is always so great here. It's unmatched to other dim sum restaurants in the city. The steamed vegetarian dumplings are lovely especially with their spicy sauce. Their chive and egg turnovers are one of my favorite items on the menu. It just has a soft crispy outside and the inside is just perfect. I also had the chive and mushroom dumplings and they were perfectly shaped and had such a wonderful flavor. I especially like their sauces. Thank you for another great experience! read more

Dumpling Story is definitely a place worth trying, but it might not be for everyone. The restaurant is on the pricier side, although the portions are generous. The atmosphere is okay, but it can get quite loud due to the number of people. On the positive side, the service is fast, and the food comes out quickly. However, flavor-wise, it's nothing extraordinary--just your standard dumplings. Additionally, the menu lacks variety and doesn't offer any full meals. read more

This will be my favorite dumpling place in SF Bay. It's new on Fillmore and such a great location so i can say. The dumplings were so flavorful and I totally love it. Haven't been in person yet so I am speaking solely off of takeout options. So after getting their food about 4828732 times I think its pretty long overdue I drop the deets on this little gem. This is our "official" dim sum option for weeknight take out. Personal favorites for me are always going to be the salt/pepper wings, the steamed pork buns, the crystal shrimp dumplings, and the scallion pancakes. My wife loves the soup dumplings, the shu mai. We could eat those dishes every week until we die pretty much, they are reliably good and comforting. Particular shout out on the pork buns though because they are just the absolute best consistency from a filling/bun standpoint. Soft, pillowy, they are glorious. I used to get pork buns from Good Mong Kok Bakery, but tbh, this is about 10x better. The soup dumpling also are quite good, I like the spicy ones but the black truffle is defintely worth it for the occasional splurge. They give you the red vinegar for it too which not all places do. Everything one needs to enjoy. I haven't been in person so I couldn't speak for the service or the location, but if you want a spot that delivers on time and often includes items for free (the pork buns are now free for orders over $50), this is great value and just great food.
