I've been eating at DW's since I was in high school and it was under different ownership but man nothing has changed. Come here mid afternoon on any day and you can expect to find a gang of young boys and girls eating sandwiches and drinking slushes. So, every time to go this this shopping center, I see D W Subs in the corner, and there are always people coming in and out of it. One day I decided to try it out. I ordered a hot meatball sub, which was alright. The item that really got me was their malts. They take a few healthy scooping of ice cream of your choice, some malt powder, milk, and mix it all together for a great thickness goodness! Another item I absolutely loved about D W Subs, was how clean they were. This place is crazy clean! You walk in the door and there is a smell of bleach, and the place is spotless. I have worked in restaurants and grocery stores---nothing I have ever seen has compared to how clean it is here! Place has nothing to do with Mortal Kombat. I looked pretty stupid walking in with my Scorpion costume ready for battle. The shop is located in a strip mall next to a Stater Bros and some other random stuff. Very hole-in-the WALL-E....... Aside from being 900 years old, the woman that made our sandwich was very straightforward, and impersonal. But for some reason I don't see this as a bad thing. It fits with the whole mood of the place. On one visit my friend ordered the Dagwood and asked for extra yellow peppers. She looked at him with a perplexed stare and said, "they're just going to fall off the sandwich if I put more." and didn't add any extra peppers. I giggled, my friend got kind of upset, but he's a whiny little B so who cares. I told him, "Just eat your sandwich and stop complaining, and while you're at it get out of my country!" as tears ran down his eyes from me shoving the sandwich in his mouth. He's moved to Canada and has changed his name to Jack Stanley in an effort to get away from me...But as made obvious by my previous statement, I found out where he moved to, and what his new name is so he better move again! My all time favorite is the turkey bacon n' avocado, which should be renamed to "angel meat dipped in unicorn blood with just a sprinkle of all that is fantastic and good on this earth...sandwich." What makes the sandwiches special is the dressing, ohhhh that mouth watering goodness. Plus the price is fair. There is always a daily special that takes off a buck from whatever sandwich they've selected. I had their roast beef once as a daily deal, and it was okay. I realized after ordering it that I have never really been a fan of roast beef. Unless I'm drunk at a party in a room with a lonely girl...but we'll let Brazzers tell that story. I was intrigued by their ice cream selection because I thought that maybe, just maybe, they made their own ice cream. So I asked the woman if they indeed birth their own ice cream. She said "NO." This place used to be great! We have been coming to DWs for years. My mom would even come back in the day when she was in high school. The previous owner, Terri, held it down and never disappointed. Things have changed since the new owner has taken over. What changed? Well the meat to bread ratio for the sandwiches is absurd, you need to order extra meat every time. The blonde lady is pretty rude to the employees & customers- the kids working are very nice, but don't seem to have a clue what they are doing & they make it known to you. Nobody working wears a mask despite the state wide order to do so. They also don't prep food wearing gloves which is dirty & gross. I asked for additional sauce on the side which resulted in me not getting any sauce on my sandwich & having to pay extra for sauce. A family run sandwich shop located on Orangethorpe & Kellog in a small shopping plaza with Stater's Brothers. The sandwich shop is located between the Thai place and liquor store. The sandwich (turkey club) was yummy, the service is friendly and watching the whole family in action (including the kids helping mom) put a big smile on my face. First time picking up a sandwich and was surprised to see the workers with no masks or gloves prepping the sandwiches. Pre covid-19, gloves should be worn. Now in the midst of covid-19, gloves and a mask should be a must. Worker with worn off polish digging her hands into the lettuce was a bit disturbing. Hair was not tied back for any of the workers. Terrible service, ok sandwiches, and good root beer slushies. They need to cut the menu in half and double the staff to better serve their clients. They have cold and hot (microwaved ingredients including how they cook the bacon) subs, slushies, ice cream, and milkshakes. There is always the one frantic woman making sandwiches and a clueless teenager taking her sweet time to make milk shakes, scoop ice cream, take phone orders, and ring up customers. I had asked for avocados and instead got day old guacamole paste. And the kid behind the counter unapologetically gave away the last of the iced tea to the regular in line in front of me after saying to him "I only have enough for one more and have a call in order for one already. Anyway, D W subs is truly a diamond in the rough. Holy crap do they know how to make a GOOD sub here. Its a small, unassuming place at the corner of orangethorpe and Kellog. Its old, in a stater bros. plaza where old people try to take you out with their cars..Theres barely anywhere to sit, just a counter where you order and a counter where you can watch a REAL sandwich artist at work. I worked at the business park on La Palma and Kellog and stumbled upon this when our secretary was making a lunch run. I also found out that my sister went here when she went to school at Esperanza High which is literally a little ways down the street. This is important to know because it's here mainly for the kids. Weekday Lunch draws long lines and likewise, it generally doesnt operate when the high school doesnt. They have a menu of sandwiches with short nicknames and a little description of what's in it, but I only get one thing here. And really, there's only one sandwich that you need to know about: THE BOMBER. Its thick and delicious slabs of cotto, genoa and sopressata salamis and other italian meats on a HUGE footlong loaf of Italian bread with provalone cheese, tomatoes, shredded lettuce and the best part of all, homemade Italian dressing. I say with pure conviction, its better than good. Its a fucking sexual experience. The construction is tight yet still has the characteristic dripping of Italian dressing. The meats are thick, not paper thin, and are bursting with flavor. The vegetables...who gives a shit about vegetables? but this is a great sandwich. Its all you need in one sandwich. Nothing left to be desired. Here's where I start throwin down: It is the Best Italian sub Ive ever had. Now, I havent eaten everywhere on the planet so if there is a better sandwich, let me know ...but as for me right at this very moment Im drooling because Im thinking about my sandwich. Yeah, they have other things like different flavored slushes and ice cream but you NEED to get a sandwich! there's nothing better...NOTHING. The cost is high school student cheap. You can eat very well for under or about $10...you can get sandwich, chips, drink and dessert for that. The people here are cool, too. I mean, yeah, typical high school kids but they're nice. The best person here is the older sandwich lady who makes subs from behind a counter for everyone to see. Thats the mark of quality...and she's SOOO NICE! I hate this overused cliche, but you can taste the love in there sandwiches. So now that you';ve witnessed me wax poetic about sandwiches from a small dive in a strip mall, go get a bomber, would you? They're consistantly great and knock your face off delicious. This place is a great hole in the wall that has been around for 35 years. As a high school student in 2003, I would swing by after school and grab slushy but never tried out their sandwiches until last year. Their sandwiches are the best you can buy in the city and only are rivaled by Stefano's down the street. If you are looking for a good and fresh sandwich this is the place to come. First thing you notice when you walk in is the smell. It's just smells like a hole in wall authentic sandwich place. Terry is a great woman and can make a sandwich like few others.
