This is a very cool place right by Fenwick Park. It is definitely a high end please, with an extensive set of French wines on offer by the bottle. They also have a number of craft whiskeys, craft rums and spirits. I ordered the New York strip steak. In retrospect, I should have asked for the French fries vs the cut potatoes, so I mentioned that for anybody who would rather have that choice as well. For dinner, I arrived with a party of 7 for a Wednesday 6:30pm restaurant. The table only needed a few minutes to prepare; staff invited us to the bar to wait but proved unnecessary. I managed to try the fried calamari appetizer ($18) and the Wednesday plat du jour, the whole roasted branzino ($42). The fried calamari proved addictive. The light batter with old bay seasoning and aioli reminded me quite a lot of Taiwanese style popcorn chicken, packed with flavor from 5 spice. The whole roasted branzino also impressed. I did not expect it to be deboned. The branzino itself was flaky, not dry, light in flavor, and not fishy with a crisped, taut skin - exactly what a roasted white fish should be. Size seemed to be 1/2 - 2/3 lb portion. I also wasn't sure how the dish would incorporate blue crab. Turns out, the crab meat was stuffed into the middle of the fish. Imagine butterflying a chicken, adding stuffing, and folding it up again. This added an additional briny flavor, almost acting like a really fancy salt rub. The fried shredded turnips helped cut the fish's oil, and the hollandaise added depth to the savoriness. The wine program also impressed. One member of the party who works in the industry talked up a storm with the server about stocking interesting bottles. One example was from a German vineyard, Adamswein, that had gained prominence from their chardonnays and pinot noirs. Service was pleasant throughout. Staff maintained their attention to detail when plating, clearing plates, etc. They also knew exactly what to say to this party, from waiting for some late members (a round of drinks?) to waffling about appetizers (we can put in a few and get more as you decide). read more

We visited this restaurant on a Friday evening before a Red Sox game. It was an interesting mix of diners some of whom were dressed casually as would be appropriate for this semi formal atmosphere and some (a lot actually) in Red Sox apparel. That said the child's salmon and fries ($18) provided a decent size filet and an abundance of fries. Our granddaughter gave it high marks. Other dishes at our table included a beet and burrata salad which was a little undersized but good and a burger which looked plenty large enough and was also reported to be good. The only disappointment was my entree which was the special of the night billed as Cacio e pepe with house made pasta. The pasta was good, but was not spaghetti or tonnarelli. It was a short ruffled pasta that resembled very small lasagna sheets. Overall the Cacio e Pepe was as far from a Cacio e Pepe as I have seen and was basically a bowl of buttered noodles with some pepper flakes sprinkled about. If they had advertised it as a buttered pasta I would say this was great but they called it a Cacio e Pepe and I couldn't find the cheese anywhere. Service was pretty fast and pleasant. read more

Came here at 4PM on a Saturday but should have asked for a different table. Although the place was not busy they sat our party of 4 in the far back corner. Gee thanks. Inside the place has upscale vibes but the menu while diverse is pretty basic and high-priced. My braised short rib was well cooked and a generous portion sitting on mashed potatoes and a veg. The butternut squash agnolotti (an appetizer) was subtle and favorable. The spicy chicken sandwich was also well received. The hamburger was OK. The drink list was quite varied. Visited Eastern Standard for the first time for brunch, and had a really nice visit! One of the biggest perks of this place is that due to its size and mid-level popularity, you can get a big group reservation at the last minute, which is exactly what we did. It's kind of in an odd spot tucked away behind Fenway with limited foot traffic, and the place was relatively quiet for a Saturday at noon. The space is really pretty though and it started to fill up a bit more the longer we were there. The staff was really nice and attentive. We started out with a round of drinks and everyone was pretty happy with their brunch cocktails - the espresso martini and bloody mary were the winners for our crew. The food itself was really good, but nothing too special - which is why this place lost a star in my book. Think classic american brunch menu with some good bakeshop and dessert options to top it off. It's not wildly expensive, but definitely not cheap either. I think you're mostly paying for the atmosphere and neighborhood here, but it's a solid choice. It would be great before a game or show at MGM. Not bad at all - especially if you're looking for a reservation in the middle of Boston that can accommodate a large group and has something for everyone. Eastern Standard has the vibes of a diner for when you want to dress up, in that the menu covers most of the American classics, so you've got burgers, pasta, a raw bar, steak, seafood. The night we went, they were doing a pop-up menu with a Malaysian place called Sekali - we ordered most of the appetizers from that menu, which were tasty. Also did a dozen of the oysters, can't go wrong there. The food came out very promptly. I went with the roasted chicken breast for my main. For an eye-watering $34, it was fine, juicier than I expected, though I couldn't taste much of the dijon in the sauce. Portion could've been a tad bigger. This is no slam on Eastern Standard in particular but whenever I order the chicken breast at restaurants, something about it tastes like conference food. Everyone seemed happy with their meals. Our waitress was the standout of the night. She was super upbeat and sweet and came by often to check on how we were doing. We were seated in the back and it was pretty loud. I couldn't hear much of what the other side of the table was saying. One last note - they add a 4% kitchen appreciation fee to the bill. I won't wade into the debate of the affordability of eating out versus restaurants' profit margins but I do wish this was something that was disclosed upfront, either on the website or on the menu. Been here a few times since they opened in this location. Came here for a friend's birthday celebration for dinner on a Saturday night couple weeks back. Our friend is quite the regular here at the Eastern standard and so all the staff know him well. They even wrote Happy birthday across the wall behind the bar for him! There were probably 10-15 people that were invited for either drinks or food. They had combined 3 high tables to have enough room. This was setup just a little distance from the bar area so people could stand around or sit. We ordered food - I ordered my usual salmon dish which came with veggies and barley. Salmon was okay and veggies were good. I barely touched the barley - not sure it goes that well with this dish - would have preferred rice personally. The hubs ordered the sausage rigatoni pasta which looked really good and he enjoyed it too. It was quite tasty and flavorful! He finished it all. I ordered a hot water with lemon and the server brought it no problem although I did have to ask for it a second time before I got it. Server was friendly Overall nice experience! read more

I visited Eastern Standard on Thanksgiving and we had their pre-fixe menu, not the traditional one. This was my first time at the restaurant and I was a bit disappointed but holiday dinners at restaurants tend to be lackluster. I will point out that our waitress was wonderful and very attentive. However, right off the bat we were told that several items from ever course were sold out, which feels a bit crazy seeing as we were there a 6pm. Poor planning in my opinion, how were multiple appetizers, entrees, and desserts already sold out? This left my group to have to regroup on what we had our mind set on. One thing I will say is the serving sizes were great, especially the macaroni and cheese and entrees. The short rib and tuna crudo, were the stars. Plates were obviously premade (which was expected) but it meant most of it was quite dry, especially the traditional Thanksgiving plate. I'm not sure if it's because of our group size or not, it took us a long time to get our food order in. Our server came and took our drinks order in and then there was a huge gap between our drinks getting here and them coming to take our order. Their brunch menu looks decent but not so extensive. I got the hot honey chicken and waffles - the sauce was a little too sweet for my liking; as well as the waffles. Their butterscotch bread pudding, however, was sooo good. The bread pudding wasn't too sweet which balances the caramel sauce as well as the ice cream. The apple cider donut crisp was just okay. my friend recommended eastern standard, we sat at the bar for dinner and saul was our server. we sat at a high top and started with complimentary bread & a dozen oysters, half from chatham and half from pei. i loved the pei and the chatham were great too. then we had the bone marrow which was absolutely delicious. for our main course, we split a 12oz ny strip, roasted chicken breast, and asparagus. the steak and asparagus were great, and the roasted chicken was my favorite. The new Eastern Standard in Fenway is absolutely beautiful! We had the Mac and cheese and Caesar to share, both were great and I loved the presentation of the Caesar. I had the Baked Rigatoni and it was good, but wished the ricotta hadn't been baked as well as the rest of the dish because it ended up feeling dried up. Service was good! I visited Eastern Standard today with my friends and was not disappointed! They have a special for everyday of the week and our only goal today was to try their Saturday Prime Rib Special. Our waitress started us off with the typical bread and butter for the table. However, Eastern Standard does something differently than other places, and that's to also include pickled vegetables with the bread and butter. Maybe some other places do it too, but this was my first time experience it and it was phenomenal. We also ordered calamari for the table. The calamari was not as crispy as I wanted but the flavors were definitely all there especially with the dipping sauce. Now, the prime rib special... I would eat it over and over again. The prime rib was so juicy and the horseradish sauce enhanced the dish to another level. The bone marrow popover was great too but it couldn't be compared when it's next to that amazing prime rib. I will definitely come back for other dishes. The dish I would like to try next time is their bone marrow appetizer; I heard it is pretty epic. The restaurant itself was bigger than I imagined. There are plenty of spaces in between tables so you won't feel like you're packed into the restaurant like sardines. A reservation is definitely recommended. We went on steak night, Sunday, before the Heart show at the Agganis. Let's start with service: Our primary server did a good job, and tried her best to cover up a plethora of mistakes from the side help, but ultimately couldn't: Salads served before we finished appetizers; steaks arrived before done with salad; lack of utensils and lack of utensil turnover; lack of steak knives; plate clearance haphazard. Wow. The limited menu was what it was, and while the steaks were of good quality and properly cooked, the sauces (you chose one of three) were simply poorly done. I tried the chimichurri sauce with my NY strip, and it flavorless, the oil had separated from the parsley and garlic. Plus the steaks were under-seasoned. A good cut of beef, properly cooked, bland. The room wasn't too loud, though at times we couldn't hear across the round table. Ambiance was upper end pub. Nothing to love or not like. Price? Quite expensive for what we experienced. Great atmosphere in the new location! The bar area is a really good size with comfy chairs and two TVs for when local sports games are on. Cocktail and wine list were excellent as expected and there were some decent beer options as well. The food is a bit more on the sophisticated side rather than casual, but the dishes we both tried were delicious! Nice servers, nice atmosphere, and it ends there. We ordered the burger, salmon, and pasta, only the pasta was good. The burger felt like it was cooked from frozen, the fries definitely were. The salmon was fine, but nothing to speak of. The drinks were expensive and sub par, cheap liquor, and not even chilled at $15+ for a well rack cocktail is just embarrassing. The service was good. The service was the only acceptable part of the night. I'd give 0 stars if I could. I came with a friend for the prix fixe menu, which was about $95 before tips and taxes (btw there are hidden fees). I expected at least three courses (including dessert), but instead, I got an alright appetizer and a lousy entree. No dessert. The complimentary bread was stale, for some reason, so I didn't necessarily expect much for the upcoming dishes. Somehow, my low expectations were not low enough. The prime rib was the fattiest rib I've ever had the displeasure of eating, and it actually came cold at first. A server took it back to get heated up, and although it was hot when it returned, the medium rare was obviously no longer medium rare. Temperature aside, the entire dish was just so greasy and fatty, I decided to cut my losses and just stop eating lest I get digestion issues. I took about four bites of the meat total and could only finish the potatoes. Even the greens were too greasy for my tastes. Unfortunately, I did not cut my losses soon enough. Both my friend and I had upset stomachs at the end of the evening, which, as you might expect, resulted in a few hours in the lavatory. I didn't want to ruin Christmas for any employees, so I said nothing the night of, but I think it's only fair I let other possible customers know of the incredibly disappointing Christmas meal I had. Side note, I noticed on the way out that most guests who ordered the prime rib did not touch the meat much at all, and instead opted to finish their greens, if anything. Really enjoyed the vibe here. However be forewarned that as it gets busy, it can get pretty noisy. The service was great and the apps were top notch. In addition to wine, beer and cocktails, they do offer cocktails. I really enjoyed the St Elsewhere. For apps, you can't go wrong with freshly shucked oysters. We also ate the smoked bluefish pate and that was my fave app. The shrimp cocktail was also really good as the shrimps were jumbo sized. The salt cod fritter was good but not my fave. For entree. I had the lumache with cider braised pork. The pasta was slightly over al dente but the pork was delicious and moist. I really liked the carrots and pesto as well. What was really the star of the show was the drizzle of olive oil. I don't know what kind of olive oil it was but you can tell it was high quality because it was very vegetal! Def want to come back.
