I am looking at all the great reviews and wonder if we just hit this place on a bad day. I went for dinner last night with a friend. The food was cold. The homemade mashed potatoes were tasteless and grainy. The cucumber salad was covered in a thick covering of paprika and was not enjoyable. The chicken cordon blue was mediocre and the schnitzel did not have much flavor. Our waiter was very busy, but he was very helpful and did provide good service. I would not likely return to this restaurant based on my first experience. read more

Third time is a charm! We've made two previous attempts to dine at the new Edelweiss Biergarten. The first time the parking lot was completely full so we went elsewhere, and last Sunday there was a line and a wait that could be over an hour (They don't take reservations for less than 10) so we left again. Tonight, we went early, were immediately seated and found out what our neighbors were raving about. While some attempts have been made at decoration, it pretty much reminds me of the previous inhabitant. It feels dark and old and dirty. However, upon a closer look, things such as tables, utensils, etc., were clean and it was the food we came for, not the décor. My hope is that things will eventually get brightened up. Larry Roberts plays the accordion and sings Bavarian songs and polkas. He was not overpowering but livened the place up. They have a lot of beers but I decided to save my carbs for dessert. I ordered the Rinderrouladen since it had always been a specialty of my late mother in law and I wondered how it would measure up. This is thin sliced beef that they roll up around a stuffing of onions, pickles, and bacon. It comes with spatzle (little mini dumplings) and red cabbage. MIL's Rinderrouladen was always about the size of egg rolls. What came out from the Edelweiss kitchen was a roll of meat that was bigger than some burritos I've had. Even the staff was commenting on its giant size. I did not get the impression that this was the norm. It was good--really good. The spatzle and the red cabbage was delicious. I wish the cabbage had been hotter (Not sure if it came out of the kitchen that way or if it cooled down because I was eating other parts of the meal first.) I enjoyed my dinner but only managed to get through half of it. Funny, we skipped appetizers because we wanted to make sure we could finish our entrees. My husband liked his Jagerschnitzel (pork cutlet) and they were happy to accommodate his request for spatzel instead of potatoes. We brought home a good portion of his meal also. We got a slice of the Bavarian Cream Cake to go. A few hours later it was time to finish off the evening on a sweet note. The wait staff was friendly and accommodating and the food was quite good. It wasn't fancy--no sprigs of herbs sticking out of foods or artistic drizzles of whatever on the plate. It reminded me of something out of grandma's kitchen--tasty and authentic. Went there last night around 8:30 after a last minute trip up north. The parking lot was packed so we almost didn't stop but when we got inside there were plenty of tables. The ambiance is definitely lacking and I'm hoping they get that a little tighter. It's like they were in such a hurry to open that they threw up some flags and fabric and left all of the the old Wagon Yard stuff. The women's bathroom was gross. There was a plunger in the stall that had a nasty brown stained handle. It was yuck and again still had Wagon Yard stuff up. I was really looking forward to a Jagerschnitzel but they were out which is understandable late on a Saturday night. I ordered the Hungarian schnitzel to share and the chicken brat plate. We ordered drinks , German beer never disappoints but the soda my daughter ordered had no syrup in it. She had to change drinks because the waiter said it would take awhile to change the syrup. Our food came and the brats were moist and well cooked. The sauerkraut was excellent and my daughter said that it was all very similar to what she got in Czech. The only thing was the fried potatoes seemed like they were taken from a batch that had been sitting around. They were not good at all which was a bummer because this was a cheat day and we were really looking forward to those. My schnitzel was very disappointing. It was cold and over cooked. It had a smear of paprika sauce that was very bland and too thick. It was literally only a smear that covered the center 3/4 of the meat. The paprika sauce had a very heavy raw paprika flavor to it. I asked for a side of sauce and was charged a dollar for it. We had to salt it which is something I never do. I got a small pile of mashed potatoes about the size of the bottom of a water glass. Again, please give me a restaurant size serving, it's cheat day. They too were bland. The cucumber salad needed more vinegar. I was really looking forward to that but it was cucumbers in water with paprika. Someone needs to relax on the paprika. All in all we were disappointed and left unsatisfied with the overall experience. At first I would swear to never step foot in there again but may give it a chance once they settle in. You just get a feeling that the whole opening was too rushed to satisfy the Oktoberfest crowds, but in the rush don't forget about the people that will come month after month for some food from the homeland. read more

The only thing German about this place is the name Edelweiss and the assorted german and austrian beers. The schnitzel was like a frozen breaded country fried steak. I couldn't tell the difference between my wife's swine schnitzel and my veal schnitzel. The crust was not "puffy" like the real Wiener schnitzel. The paparika "hungarian sauce" tasted like water and paparika mixed. The only good thing was our friends had the hungarian sausage. A hungarian restaurant without goulash?? Having lived in Germany for 22 years and my wife, who is Austrian, have eaten at thousands of restaurants, gasthaus and pensions. Plus my wife and mother-in-laws made "haus gemacht" food. Apfel strudel was hand made and pulled. No fillo dough or puff pastry. Was not impressed at all with the Edelweiss. Go to Zur Kate or Bavarian Point in Mesa. read more

I've been dining at Edelweiss for about a year but sad to say, the quality of food and service has gone downhill recently. Strike one: I ordered the sauerbraten dinner through Grubhub and the restaurant didnt have it ready to pick up until 2.5 hours later. Strike two: I took a friend there several nights ago and our meal was a disaster. The dark beer that the wait staff recommended was horrible and they did not have my first choice of entree. We had a long wait for our food and when it finally came, my friend's chicken schnitzel was tasteless and my side dishes were stone cold. My husband and I drove 45 min to try this place, I'm sad to say that we won't be back. The building reminds me of an old biker bar turned into a "trying too hard" family restaurant. The beer selection, and the large pretzel with beer cheese were great! Dinner however is where it all went bad. The smoked grilled pork chops had no smoked flavor, and were as dry as shoe leather. The cucumber salad, while it had the correct flavor, was mushy from the cucumbers having been cut too thin. The spaetzle was chewy and doughy-and tasted like raw flour. The red cabbage was salty, when it should have been sweet. The Jägerschnitzel was deep fried (pan fried is the traditional method) and the mushroom gravy accompanying it was seemingly out of a store-bought jar. I found it odd that it was served on the side in a separate container as well. As a side note, the techno music played at full volume was just annoying. I had hoped for an authentic German dining experience, but I guess I will have to go back to Haus Murphy's for that. If the ownership is of German decent, they need to re-examine their business model to make this restaurant more authentic because the menu is very promising on paper, but it doesn't deliver on the plate. I left a review on their Facebook page the evening we stopped in to eat, now 3 days later... nothing. Crickets. I have noticed that they love to comment on all of the positive reviews-on every outlet, but completely ignore the negative reviews. If you are truly a business owner looking to survive, it would be in your best interest to reach out to those of us whom have had a bad experience and try to make it right! If you don't, you'll find yourself closing your doors much sooner than you expected. Shameful. read more

This place is so good. My son, DIL and I went for dinner yesterday and it was so good. We had the Budapest Salad and Opa's Favorite for appetizer and it was delish. For dinner my son had the Eisbein (ham on the bone that fell off the bone) which was so good. My DIL and I had the Pork Schnitzel which was also so good. The mashed potatoes are made from scratch as is the sauerkraut. Every bite was wonderful. Our server, Gregg, was very knowledgeable and explained how they prepare all of the food from scratch, just like grandma. We will definitely be back. I went here with some friends a few weeks back and the food was great. It took a long time to get the food but it was wonderful. We thought it would be a good idea to have our graduation party there because of how fun the atmosphere was and how good the food is. However, when we called to make a reservation, they were very rude. For example, they were annoyed that we had called and when we inquired about a grad party they said "ugh I guess. We will have to ask a bunch of follow up questions though" when we agreed to that, it was followed by complete silence. We really enjoyed our dinner here last night. Our server Josh was excellent. It was our first time in so he explained the menu for us and offered suggestion on food and beer. He was very friendly and fun to talk to. Everything we had was delicious. I had the Huhnerschnitzel which is chicken in a garlic sauce and I loved every bite my husband got the German brawurst and he really enjoyed it.
