"So... where's Edokko ONE?" I asked. I mean if this place is Edokko II, then there's gotta be an Edokko I, no? Turns out, there isn't a I, and actually, this place is officially called Edokko - no numerals. Confusing, right? It must be authentic Japanese. The real story behind this all is that the owner used to have two locations but sold this restaurant, so therefore this is the only location and is officially Edokko (no numerals =P). For Sac standards, this place deserves a 4, but I'm a spoiled little south bay girl surrounded with Ramen Houses. You know it's gonna be good when most everyone eating and working there are Japanese. Affordable option for a place that serves both Ramen and Sushi. I prefer the sushi here over Akebono despite the limited variety and lack of special rolls. Also, it's a cute little place with alot of personality , not commercial like Akebono. If you're looking for good Ramen, Shoki's the best. If you're looking to accomodate more than a party of 2, then hit up Akebono. And if you're looking for something in between, Edokko is a cute little restaurant with great lunch specials. read more

The ramen here is definitely comparable to Shoki Ramen House, minus the long wait time, and crammed dining area. They also have more of a selection at a cheaper price than Shoki Ramen House. Most dishes ranged from $6-$10. There were so many things on the menu that sounded good, so it took me a bit to look over. I looked on Yelp and many people ordered the ramen here, so I decided to try it out. They definitely have generous portions. I ordered the Tan Tan Men and I wasn't even able to finish my bowl. The broth was tasty and had a fair amount of meat in there as well. I just wished that they served whole mushrooms instead of chopping them up into little pieces. How have I never posted a review for edokko?! I have been coming here for at least 8 years and every time I order the same thing - edokko don! It's two shrimp tempura and breaded chicken steamed in sauce over a bed of fluffy eggs, onion, and rice. Yum! The portion is large enough for two people to share, but if I'm really hungry I can eat the whole thing (don't judge me). Even when I was away at college, I missed my yummy edokko don! I haven't found a place that compares. They serve a variety of other traditional Japanese items like udon, teriyaki chicken, soba, hand rolls, etc. When I say traditional, that means no Americanized "sushi" rolls covered in three different sauces haha. I've tried their sesame chicken, which has a different sauce than other restaurants, but is tasty. My boyfriend enjoys that as well as the teriyaki beef. Their tempura is also more dense than others, but still good. Seating is limited, but I advise to just call in your order for pick up. From my experience, if you dine in your food can take around 40 minutes. If you call in, your food is ready in about 25 minutes. I'm don't really get why they're so slow when you dine in, but their workers are always friendly. They aren't open all day, so check their hours when you plan to go. Yesterday I called in an order at 4:30 and was told to come around 5:15 because their kitchen didn't open until 5. Edokko usually sends us coupons in the mail too - so that's nice. This is such a hidden gem. I ordered the Chicken Katsu Curry, and it reminds me of home and Japan. It tasted so home-made and so flavorful. I have tried to make curry myself, but mine doesn't even compare to this. As the curry soaks the chicken, it creates such a flavor bomb when you take a bite. I also ordered cold Soba noodles and it also reminded me of my time in Japan. After a hot, long day, a cold refreshing dish does wonders. A walk down memory lane... I used to come here back when I used to live in the area! I decided to come here for with my old friend for a belated b-day dinner and reminisce... Well, this is what we decided we would do after eating at Edokko... We marched over to the liquor store next door to pick up some booze. Clutching my prized fried rice in my hands, we went in search of drinkable booze. Something good, but not so bad that I would left hungover on a weeknight. I found it! Mike's Hard Lemonade, an oldie, but still a goodie. In my anticipation of getting that sweet, sweet Mike's Hard down my gullet, I sat my fried rice down on a stack of boxed beer... I left the place with all smiles holding our booze. It wasn't until I got all the way back to the house that I realized I left my delicious fried rice at the liquor store. I figure the dude from the liquor store probably found a nice little surprise when he walked to the back of the isles, or possibly, saw me set the little pouch of goodness down, and didn't say anything so he could enjoy my fried rice! Edokko is the place I go to for Japanese food (other than fancy sushi rolls). They have everything from yakisoba (fried noodles), chahan (fried rice), udon, ramen, donburi, etc. Everything I've had from here is always really tasty, really big, and cheap too. Typically, I order for take-out from Edokko because the wait for dine-in can be kind of crazy sometimes. But if you do choose to dine it, it's not too bad, you just have to have some patience. They do offer free tea, so that's a nice plus. My last visit was a dine-in visit, and our group of four ordered: -Sunomono (free): I liked it; it's just a small appetizer portion. -Edokkodon: this is hands-down my family's favorite dish to order here. It's breaded chicken and shrimp tempura, cooked with egg and onion over rice. It's super tasty and the portion is more than enough. You get two pieces of shrimp and plenty of chicken. -Spider roll: this was just alright; compared to the other dishes we got, I probably wouldn't recommend ordering this one. -Ramen set (comes with a mini shoyu ramen, chahan, salad, miso, and nanban chicken): this is plenty of food and a pretty good deal. The ramen is about half the size as the regular ramen, but still plenty of food. The plate with fried rice, chicken and salad was already more than enough food. I liked the nanban chicken. It was nicely fried and was really tasty with the fried rice. -Sesame chicken ala carte: the portion was huge. This was way more meat than we could finish. The sauce on the chicken was perfectly sweet, but not too sweet. It is served with a salad also. The total for all of this food was about $35 and we had plenty of leftovers. Everyone agreed that the food was great and that we'd come back. Service can be a little bit on the slow side for dine-in, but it's because they are super busy. Yes, I dare say it. I guess I'm just not a ramen kinda girl. =( I've been to a few ramen houses before and was never too satisfied but STILL decided to give Edokko a shot. I was pretty excited because there was a cute, elderly Japanese couple dining next to us and I figured this place has to be authentic and good if they were there! Then..my excitement slowly dwindled as the wait became longer. Although we were seated and given menus right away, we were sitting around waiting for the longest time for our orders to be taken. Then when our orders were taken, our food took even longer to come out. However, they did try to diverge our attention from the long wait by giving us a little salad and the place was fully occupied so I forgive them. They were also quick to refill our waters! I ordered the Tan Tan Men (based on Yelp reviews) and he ordered the Challenge Ramen, extra crazy. The ramen noodles had a nice texture and was topped off with a nice amount of roasted pork, mushrooms and bamboo. Although it was quite flavorful, it wasn't at all spicy. Not one bit. So I find it peculiar that fellow Yelpers are saying it's spicier than you can imagine. The Challenge Ramen definitely had some spice to it but notttt so much. Overall, the food was decent but I rather pay 75 cents for packaged, instant ramen at home (I actually crave that stuff, damn MSG!). So this is what happened. When I walked in I was the 6th customer. It was 11:26 A.M. Ordered at 11:30 am . A simple dish, Ramen. And please remember I was the 3rd table in the restaurant. Waited and waited and the ramen never arrived. I asked, got told it was coming and finally at 12 pm, yes a full 30 minutes after I ordered I finally got up and left. It was just ridiculous! We used to go here a lot about 10 years ago when there weren't many Japanese places around. We stopped going because the service was really slow. Some friends recommended it so we thought we'd try it again. Well the service is a little quicker, but now the food is bad. I had the chicken teriyaki with tempura. The chicken was way overcooked to the point of jerky and the sauce was so heavy and thick that I couldn't eat it. The tempura had too much corn starch in the batter and made hard and crunchy. It's supposed to be light and crispy. My wife and other dinner companion had the beef teriyaki and tempura. They both didn't eat theirs either because they said it had too much fat and gristle in every bite. Needless to say we won't be going back anytime soon. Great service. Not so great food We came here based on the the other yelp reviews. It's a pretty small location with minimal seating. It wasn't too busy when we arrived. Mind you, it was a Monday night. Service was prompt and friendly. We made the mistake of ordering 2 bento boxes. The portions are huge. We could have easily shared one bento box and probably still wouldn't have finished it. On top of that, we also ordered a Hawaii roll. Although there was plenty of food to eat, most all of the food didn't taste good. The miso soup was very salty. We added our tap water to it to make it better. The chicken katsu was purely flavorless. The mustard chicken was also extremely salty and rubbery. The grilled salmon did taste quite well but some parts of it was salty like the rest of the food. The roll was basic but it was probably the best tasting item on my plate. I'm reluctant to return, but if I do, I'll try the ramen. We ordered the shoyu ramen, challenge ramen, the one with chicken/vegetable/shrimp (same as the challenge without the spice), and my friend ordered tan tan men. The shoyu and tan tan were delish. Tan tan men is better than the ramen place off S street. Broth more light at Edokko. They give you a lot of food for a decent price. Food was 3.5 stars. Service was 4 stars. Speed in which we got our food ONE star. Not more than 3 parties there that hadn't gotten food (inc us). We had a party of 4, another couple at another table and then another party of 3. I dub thee, "Shoki's (lesser quality but more quantity) Twin" due to your similarities in so many aspects and difference in that specific aspect. Everyone will probably agree with me when I say that Shoki is higher in quality of ingredients but Edokko gives more bang for the buck in amount and options. They are also similar in two major ways: -They both serve Ramen. That's a given. and -The long wait. Some may not notice this but the wait to actually receive your food at Edokko II may be just as long, if not longer, than Shoki. While Shoki is more upfront about the wait, Edokko seats you immediately but secretly prioritizes serving takeout orders before their in-restaurant diners. Last time I came for dinner it took 40 minutes to receive my food! So next time you come here because Shoki had an hour wait, I recommend ordering takeout. read more

So I'm stuck on ramen right now, I've tried several ramen houses in Sacramento and I have to say...Edokko II is no good! My friend and I thought we would give it a try because it's something other than what were used to. Food: we ordered two ramen bowls. Tan tan men and the challenge bowl extra spicy. It was so so. The tan tan was way too salty, the first slurp of broth was good but when you continue it just got saltier and it just wasn't good. The challenge bowl was bland and It wasn't even spicy. Both bowls were over filled with soggy noodles and for once we didn't even finished our food! We also ordered the spicy roll which I think was the only good part of our meal. Service: The service was prompt. Nice and informative. Maybe because it was super slow and no on was in there just my friend and I. Overall I don't think I would go back to Edokko II. read more

I grew up in Sacramento and our family has been coming here for years. I agree with the other reviewers that the service can be slow when they are busy. Go for an early dinner (6:00 p.m.), and you will have a great experience. No wait, food comes out promptly, in and out in 30 minutes- BAM! It's delicious, affordably priced, homestyle Japanese food. Extensive menu. Love the Edokko udon, which comes with shrimp tempura and grilled chicken. The broth is very flavorful and the udon is chewy (the way I like it!). The bento boxes are good if you want to have an entree with tempura. Sushi is pretty good too. But I think it's their noodle dishes that will have you coming back for more. It's a casual, unassuming, no frills restaurant, but a great place for Japanese food if you're in South Sacramento. read more

There's only one reason I come to this spot and that's the Ramen or the Edokkodon. Not sure how the sushi is because they do these other dishes so well. The servers are nice and fast, however be prepared to wait for your food. It does take a little while for the food to come out, but anything good is worth waiting for. You have a large assortment of ramens to choose from. I prefer the karage ramen. The ramen consist of small tasty chicken nuggets, sitting on a bed of perfectly cooked noodles, bathing in an awesome broth. It comes in a huge bowl and everything is piping hot. Be sure to blow on each spoonful before shoveling it in your mouth. I fully encourage getting the extra noodles for $2 more. It's well worth it. This dish is my go to when I feel like Japanese comfort food. The Edokkodon is the Godzilla of rice bowls. It is a pork cutlet, lightly breaded and fried, cooked with about what seems like a half dozen eggs. They then mix it all together with some sort of sauce and set it on top of rice. There was a point when I was getting this dish about twice a week for a month. Order this when your stomach is talking because it's a beast of a dish. read more

I had the deep breaded and deep fried salmon special which was not on the menu and written on the wall. I forgot the name of the dish but it was basically salmon katsu and was good. My husband ordered the katdsu curry dish and it was good too. We were seated as soon as they opened. We had a party of six and there was no problem getting a table; however, the restaurant became very busy. Our food came out in a reasonable time frame. I did feel sorry for some of the latter diners because everyone came in around the same time and there were togo orders too. My brother said the restaurant tends to be busy and there are many regulars. The atmosphere reminds me of the restaurants in San Jose's J-town or Sacramento's 10th and W streets area back in the day.
