It's a good establishment. Would like to come back and try their Teriyaki. I had originally come here with the goal of getting Teriyaki chicken but wound up getting the spicy Korean chicken. The chicken was good - a decent amount of spice - and really good seasoning in the bowl. My issue was that the vegetable-to-chicken ratio was a little ridiculous. It tasted fine, sure, but I would have liked more chicken. There's a place you can find in malls probably across the country called Sarku Japan. They give you about a 1-to-1 ratio of vegetables to chicken, so you get A LOT of both. But the difference between Sarku and Edokko is that Sarku's vegetables kinda suck. But I digress. I would like to come back to try the Teriyaki. A good place overall. read more

My family has been coming here since before I was born, we usually always get the gomoku yakisoba, which is such a delicious noodle dish that is hard to find in other Japanese restaurants! It's heartwarming to step into Edokko and see the same tables of Asian seniors everytime at their regular joint. The serve ramen here but I think their strength lies in their Japanese comfort food. You know, donburi, curry rice, karaage, mabo tofu, etc. The wait can be a bit long sometimes so we try to get there right when they open. I'm sure they have a small staff in the back so it takes a bit longer than the larger restaurants. The service is great and servers are cordial and friendly. I rarely ever write bad reviews. I made it a motto to write only 5-star reviews unless there are no redeemable merits for that particular establishment. This is the place! I've been here 2-3 times before. Service has always been slow...but tonight, it was EXTREMELY SLOW. I ordered the ramen combo with fried rice and shumai. Twenty-minutes passed when the waitress dropped off a small plate of pickled cabbage. A freebie, I supposed. I had to get up and grab utensils. Another fifteen minutes before the ramen arrived (we're 40 minutes in). I was already upset and had decided to get everything packed to go. Another ten minutes passed before the rice and shumai arrived. They packed everything and I paid. I left a $5 tip on a $15.10 bill. It wasn't the waitress's fault. Went here last night for a friends birthday and I thought it was ok. My friend has been going here for quite some time and raved about it. She got the green looking cold noodles and loved every bit of it. I got a side order of teriyaki chicken and a Hawaiian roll. The Hawaiian roll was ok, but maybe it was made the more traditional way, and I'm used to the American way, slathered in sauce. The teriyaki chicken was ok as well, just a really tiny portion. I've been finding it increasingly difficult to scout out good versions this dish, but Edokko II prepares it flawlessly. If that isn't nom worthy, I don't know what is. I had a craving for something new the other night and found this place by accident. Ordered up the seafood ramen and was pleasantly surprised. Large shrimp, great broth and the fish was good. The noodles were perfect, not too soft, slightly chewy. Broth was slightly salty, but very flavorful. Super tasty. The only downside was the long wait that I had experienced. But once the ramen came out, the wait was well worth it. The waitresses were very friendly and helpful. And the hot tea is not served in one of those crappy little aluminum tea pots, they give you a large cup of tea and come around so often and refill it. Nice touch. A nice fulfilling meal all for about $7, I'll definitely be back. Disclaimer: I'm NOT from San Francisco, so my uneducated palate does not know what the hoity-toidy ramen houses are capable of producing. What I do know is that the water in Sacramento tastes way better than the community swimming pool water they pump through the taps in the bay area, and since the broth is mostly water based, I must assume that our broth has got to taste better than some hot chlorine water masked with oyster sauce. read more

So, I was craving some noodles and I've been wanting to go to Shoki for a while. Got dressed and told a friend to meet me at Shoki. Closed. Totally annoying. The Yelp page for Shoki says they're open on Mon, but they weren't. We went to Edokko instead (thank you Yelpers!) Kind of way out there if you aren't used to that part of town, but, you know it was good. I was pleasantly surprised. Weird strip malls with no cars in them at 8PM give me the creeps. Not to mention Edokko is next door to a Taco Bell. Hmmm.... Like I said, I was craving ramen. I ordered #89 Maguro Sashimi ($6.95) for an appetizer. The pieces of fish were large and had a great texture. It was very fresh (one can tell when a piece of fish is not fresh.) And, five pieces for that price is a good deal. Nothing fancy, but good. For dinner, I had the (#11) Tan Tan Men ($6.95.) Ramen noodles in a spicy miso flavored broth topped with minced pork, shiitake mushrooms and bamboo shoots. I had my requisite spicy conversation with the server. I want extra hot, not white people "hot". It was spicy alright. I think I may have broken a sweat. (Yeah!) I want to go back and have the #13 Challenge Ramen. It has a hot and spicy chicken with vegetables - your choice of medium hot, hot, very hot, super hot and crazy hot. Now, there's some choices! Any menu item that goes from hot to crazy hot in four steps is a place I will go back to. For reference purposes, it's not just sushi and ramen. They also have Udon, Soba, Cold Ramen Noodles, Donburi (bowl of rice topped with breaded deep-fried meat and egg), Yakisoba (Fried Noodles), Chahan (Fried Rice). Their sushi is limited and not served in a sushi bar setting. For sushi/sashimi they have Tamago (Egg), Ika (Squid), Tako (octopus), Unagi (broiled fresh water eel - yummy!), Sake (Smoked Salmon), Hamachi (Yellowtail), Maguro (Tuna), Ebi (Squid). They also have a couple of handrolls and six piece rolls that all contain the items I mentioned above. Nothing fancy, no extras, just simple food. Great servers who were very accommodating and willing to stop back by to make sure we didn't need a fire extinguisher. I don't know what the point of contention with a number of people on Yelp about having to wait 45 minutes for food. Our food was on the table in less than 10 minutes. Let me be upfront about this. I love ramen and I always just assumed that to satiate my quality ramen cravings, I would have to visit SoCal (*spits*). Bay Area has a few decent joints, and gave up on ever finding a good one in Sac. I also like super spicy food. So when people here are raving both about the ramen and, in particular, the heat in the Challenge Ramen... I mean come on... my curiosity was piqued. So my first trip to Edokko, the waitress was incredibly friendly and was all ready to let me start looking when I pretty much said, thanks, but I know I want the Challenge Ramen. Now, I never want to pre-judge heat at a new restaurant, but just to be safe, I went with the Super Hot (second hottest) instead of (as I normally would) just go with the hottest they have available. 20 minutes later and I get a huge, piping hot bowl of ramen. It's pretty basic, chicken, bean sprouts, veggies, and those pink and white fish patty things, but everything in the broth was covered in the chili. Just looking and smelling, I knew it was gonna be good eats. The veggies they used were very fresh, no question. If anything, I'd say Edokko went lighter than I'd like on the veggies. The ramen noodles were definitely fresh, but nothing outstanding about them. The broth was light and very spicy. Clearly the chilis were taking center stage with the Challenge ramen. On my second trip, I went with the Crazy hot Challenge ramen, and it was pushing me on comfortable heat. It was completely manageable, but I was definitely breaking a sweat (I think the summer heat didn't help here). Also, by the point it's at crazy hot, you're losing a lot of the flavors of everything else and just tasting the chilis, so from a flavor perspective, I'd probably bring it back down a notch in the future. I'd say that with the Challenge ramen, Edokko is doing what it set out to do... feature a hot and spicy bowl of ramen. I'd just like to see the noodles cooked with a little less firmness and a heartier bowl of food. Seemed to be a bit too much broth to not quite enough noodles and veggies. This has been my favorite place for udon and ramen since the late '90s. Yes the restaurant itself is a little "hole-in-the-wall" and has not changed at all during that time, but don't let that phase you. Their noodles are SO GOOD!!! I always get my orders to-go and have learned to arrive about 10 minutes later than the time they give me, especially if I order during peak lunch or dinner time, because they do tend to run behind. I like how they package up your meal piping hot, with the noodles and broth in separate containers, that way the noodles still have that perfect texture whether it's 10 minutes or 1 hour later before you get to eat them. One last thing. I wish they were open Saturdays AND Sundays, and closed instead on say, Mondays. Also it would be great if they stayed open straight through the day instead of closing at 2:30 and reopening at 5:00. I go here all the time with my family when I want a lot of Japanese food. Like others have said the wait time on busy nights can be long. But the wait time isn't going to stop me from coming here. Who can say no to a giant ramen set??? A nice sized bowl of shoyu ramen, large plate of chahan, salad and you choice of side (i.e. karage, gyoza, etc). I really really want to give this place more than 2 stars but they missed out on a few crucial things, but they did do some things right. My tempura udon, was good. Udon was cooked good, dashi was tasty. I could have used a bit more noodles. Ms waitress if your family run joint is trying to be authentic Japanese please pronounce tempura correctly. The wife had nabe yaki and she liked it. To me the dashi tasted pretty good, but usually it comes in a much bigger bowl. My kid had a chicken teriyaki, tempura, onigiri kids plate that he seemed to enjoy. The chicken teriyaki had some type of funny BBQ sauce on it, maybe its a family recipe but it did not taste like teriyaki. The onigiri was the biggest disappointment of the evening. I saw that nicely triangle shaped onigiri with a wrapped in nori and it brought back some good memories. First bite, ehh this gohan is mushy, like really mushy. I looked past the mushy rice to find that they did put ume in the onigiri. It was a nice tart find inside of the my mushy onigiri. I only wish the rice was better. I think I will give them another shot for sure. This is the only noodle place I have found in the area that serves cold udon, or cold somen. My friend recommended this place because I was craving yakitori and I'm so glad! The food is deLICIous! I got a chicken yaki meal and the hubs got pork tonkatsu and both were SO good. Mmm... Only con really is they're pretty slow. The phone in to-go order took about 45 min - we thought our food was going to be cold because we got there in 30 minutes with the traffic, but we still ended up waiting. However, I'd been warned they can take a minute. The other thing is there's really not enough space for waiting parties. 3 chairs. So for 5 minutes we awkwardly stood in the way of other patrons trying to pay while 3 ladies rested their purses on the chairs as they waited for their table to be cleared. WHERE'S THE BUTTON FOR NEGATIVE 5-STARS????!!!!!! Not like it used to be...... The current owners of this place have become known for convenience instead of good service or great food. I went in last month after a 3 year absence and my experience was aweful. The frontend staff was the same familiar face from 3 years ago...."hello Michelle"!! It's the owner/cook in the back that makes me write this review. It took over 25 minutes to get my meal. My sister ordered a kids meal for her son and it was the incorrectly made.....chicken teriyaki instead of sesame chicken. We sent it back to be corrected and it came back 45 minutes later because the owner/cook said that he will make it after the orders already in place. Now, I don't own a restaurant, but when is it ever a good idea to make a 4 year old wait for his food when the mistake was on your part. One would think that if you make a mistake in someone's order, you correct that order as soon as possible to keep a customer happy and try to keep that customer coming back. This is not the case. Mr. Owner/Cook kepy my nephew hungry for 45 minutes. That's not only ignorant, that's bad business. If you are hungry and want to eat anytime soon, this IS NOT THE PLACE. It took over 45 minutes to get our food! Other patrons complained and the waitresses politely apologized. However i would have thought they could have offered the complaining customers a discount. Now this was not the first time me and my family has gone to Edokkos. I have been here at least 5 times over 7 years thinking i would give them another chance!! HOWEVER same old ways and they TAKE FOREVER getting out their orders!!!! So those that say the service is great i have no idea where they got that and i know they had to have experienced long waits. I love this place and simultaneously hate it. I love it because the food is exceptionally delicious. Their ramen is very good and their kare udon is by far the best I've ever had. It is 10x better than Shoki ramen house and, as my boyfriend put it, I feel like my food is "made with love." I've never had a bento box so I can't comment on that but since they're a ramen restaurant, I suggest ramen/udon is what you order. My favorites are the nabeyaki udon, butter corn ramen and kare udon. Now I HATE it because it is SLOW and the service (not always but most of the time) SUCKS. I'm a reasonable person, I'm usually willing to overlook these things for yummy food but I've had some ridiculous experiences here. The first few times I've been here everything was fine, it was slow but I know it's slow because they take time to craft their food. I got hooked. A few weeks ago when we went we ordered chicken karaage and it took no less than 45 minutes to come out and our actual food didn't follow for at least another 40. The place was pretty packed so I didn't mind to much. The last time we went it was packed again and there were no tables available at all. At the door a server assured us it would only be a few minutes and sure enough a table left almost immediately. We waited awkwardly by the front and no one came out to clear the table. The server disappeared into the back for a long time and two other people came in (for to go orders I think) and were also standing around not knowing what to do. When a server finally came out they gave the new people no acknowledgment and continued to take orders. We waited for probably a total of about 20 minutes before going to Erawan. It's about a 20 minute drive from my downtown apartment so I was pretty irritated. Sadly, since I am a noodle soup fanatic and there is no comparable establishment in the area, I am a slave to this place and I will be back again and again. Once you sit down in the restaurant, you will notice that almost every local Japanese customer is eating soup. My favorite is the Edokko soup, an Udon soup with chicken and shrimp tempura. The broth is flavorful, yet clean. The chicken is wonderful. How can adding shrimp tempura be bad? But honestly, the broth is the best I have ever tasted anywhere, hands down. The other dishes are very good, namely the chicken katsu or sesame chicken. The sushi is good (not the best) but you can't beat the price. For 2 pieces of maguro (tuna) it's $3.25. It's the cheapest you will find anywhere. In replace for the cheap prices, the wait can be a little bit long. However, all of the girls are very friendly and helpful. Over the weekend I was getting a mean craving for some noodles, but not just any noodles, I wanted a huge bowl of good ramen. So, I decided to saddle up and head down into the Greenhaven area and go to Edokko's. First off let me just say don't come here if you're in a hurry or you're on your lunch break and need to get work to work relatively soon because their service does tend to be slow. That being said they make one of the better bowls of ramen that we have to choose from here in Sacramento. On this outing to Edokko's I had my usual challenge ramen at their "crazy" hot level with double the amount of noodles. The ramen came out in a large heavy bowl nice and scolding hot. The spiciness was more than adequate and as I slurped down the steaming hot noodles and spicy broth my desire for ramen slowly became sated and I knew it was going to be a good day. I have not tried many of their other offerings but most of my dining buddies have and the feedback on things from the gyoza to the bento boxes have been largely positive Overall, if you catch a case of Asian fever that can only be cured by a bowl of good ramen Edokko's might be just what you need. read more

Wait time in the restaurant can be 30+ minutes even if they're not busy. If you order take out add another 30 minutes to the time they actually tell you. Staff is usually apologetic but I think they really need to work on their efficiency. I love Edokko. I' started going here after the Edokko on Broadway closed down. Which still enfuriates me to this day. That was my favorite restaurant. Anyway, Edokko II on Florin is great. The servers are really friendly. I go their frequently and they always take care of my boyfriend and me. They really make us feel welcome. I always order the soba ankake soup! It's delicious. The broth in this dish might be the best I've ever had - ever. My only critique is that I wish they would add more tamago and vegetables to the soup. I've had their salmon/ tempura bento box. That was good. The salmon was a large piece. I think the tempura was a little greasy though. Their sushi is mediocre. I don't normally order sushi from here. Then again, it's more of a noodle house anyway. Their portions are large! So that is great. I can't stand when restaurants skimp on food. Prices are great. Cheap! And a small Sapporo is $2.95!! That is unheard of! My boyfriend and I get two dishes soda and a beer for $16.00! and we leave as full as an f'n stuffed potato! Came here on a Saturday afternoon shortly a little after their afternoon closure. Decor was... let's say "Asian Minimalist" - although I couldn't tell if the underground bunker light fixtures were WWII inspired, or just came with the place. While small, I'd say the place can seat about 35-40 comfortably, 44 if every seat at each table was taken (yeah, I counted seats while waiting for my food) Service was awesome - the two ladies deftly served the steady stream of dine-in and take-out customers, all with an honest smile. I guess a number of regulars come by here as the ladies addressed a number of customers by name. Food was -ok-. I ordered their Gomoku Ramen. It was seriously smack dab in the middle. It's ramen, better than the instant variety, but nothing about it really stood out in my mind. Gut Reaction Rating: Three Stars. No Tilt. It takes a while to get service sometimes, on one occasion we waited an hour for our food, I was alright with it because, me hearts bbq pork and noodles. The ramen is really, really good here... but if you come on a Friday or Saturday night, be prepared to wait for a table if there's more than two of you and then wait a pretty long time to get your food... you may want to have a snack before you come? Edokko is an old school noodle shop that has been in the Pocket area since the late 80s. The restaurant is not known for it's size, but it is known for their Japanese home style cooking. Although they have other items on their menus, their primary specialties are their noodle soup lunch bowls. Overview: Although I have never eaten dinner at this Japanese noodle diner, I have dined there countless times for lunch for several years. Their sushi appetizers are fresh and their noodle portions are large. Overall, you will get your money's worth if you plan to spend your lunch hour here. My only real issue with this place is the service. If are lucky enough to walk in on a slow hour, you will get phenomenal service. But if the place is busy, you may have to wait a little for your food or for service. PROS: Quality Japanese home style cooking that does not disappoint. A varied menu that includes fresh sashimi and assorted rolls. Great value for the amount of food ordered. CONS: Inconsistent service; especially when the restaurant is busy. The soup base is not made from scratch and may contain preservatives. Small dining room with a maximum capacity of 50-75 people. Restaurant Class: Lower-Middle Food: (3 out of 5 stars) The noodles are good and the portions are generously large. Additionally, their appetizers are quite fresh and is worth getting if you are in the mood sushi. However, the soup base for the noodle tend to run on the saltier side. We went here a couple days ago. I wanted to test out restaurant in our area because we just moved here. They have good customer service but their food are not that great. Well the ones we orders. We order a Bento Box and it was the same tasting like anywhere else so that was fine. We ordered the Rainbow Roll it came with 8 pieces for $10 that was okay price because I've been other places for cheaper but that sushi tasted like amateur and was really big. The only thing I was disappointed the most was their Edokko Fried Rice. When I go to different restaurants I want to test out their main dish or the dish they call after themselves which was the fried rice; it was so plain and the shrimp in it tasted like dirt. Great Japanese food for the price. Portion sizes are great for the lunch prices. Portions sizes are very generous for the dinner menu. Service is great. Staff is always friendly and happy to help with selections. Food is always hot and fresh. Only warning is that if you are in a hurry, it would be best to go at another time when you are in a leisurely mood. read more

Yes I am from the Bay Area. Not only that, I moved here only 4 months ago, so yes the taste of *insert long namedropping list here to prove I'm a bay area foodie* is still fresh in my mind and dearly missed. But I have to be realistic. It's a 2 hour drive to San Jose and about 1 1/2 hour drive to San Francisco. As much as I get a craving for noodles I'm not spending that much gas money and adding that much mileage to my car for a $8 yummy ramen or udon. So what do I do now I'm stuck around Sac? This place is simple in decor and food, no multitude of deep-fried items or sushi rolls slathered with kewpie mayo. Almost everyone orders udon, soba, or ramen here ($6-$10 or so)because it's cheap and the portions are huge. The broth is clean and flavorful and the noodles aren't soggy. On a cold night the Challenge Ramen with tender chicken thigh pieces and loaded with veggies, or the udon with chicken and shrimp tempura really hit the spot. I've never noticed the wait times but I do admit, I'm always with good company when I come here. I've heard weekend nights are the worst. read more

I've looked at the reviews. I see a whole lot of 1-2 star reviews ("Takes too long!") and a whole lot of 4-5 star reviews ("Great service, excellent food!"). 12 March 2016, POURING down rain. My date and I were seated immediately. Service was there immediately. "I'll give you one more minute," and holy cow she actually meant 60 seconds, and she was back to take our order. Having read the reviews, we expected a wait, and ordered warm sake, which appeared (and strangely disappeared) almost immediately. Me: Tan Tan Men w Udon (extra spicy). Her: Shio Ramen w pork (and extra pork w poached egg). We settled in for a long conversation, holding hands and re-living our day with each other, occasionally glancing at our cell phones and sharing texts from friends and other media. Our reverie was suddenly and rudely interrupted by the timely arrival of our meals, well ahead of any reasonable wait time--how rude! (Ok, how totally not rude.) My meal was perfection, exactly as I'd hoped. Udon soft, chewy, not overdone. Ground pork, flavorful, rich, not at all dry. Soup hot and extra-spicy, but not too spicy. The GF loved hers too--the broth is more briny than salty--but the portion size was too large (oh darn!) and she couldn't finish it, despite being hungry. Hey, who knows...maybe the good folk at Edokko II have been reading their own yelp reviews. All I know is, we will both be back--and soon. read more

I've been coming here since the mid-90s, meaning *fifteen* years of loyalty! And now that I don't even live in Sac, I still make an effort to come back to Edokko every time I'm home. This is a local joint serving up very good food whose quality hasn't diminished one bit in one and a half decades. My go-to dish is the spicy seafood udon. (And with that, I think the servers just confirmed my identity.) It's a large bowl of piping-hot soupy goodness, with a generous serving of thick and chewy udon noodles hiding under a mountain of accompaniments: napa cabbage, carrots, onions, shrimp, imitation crab, pink fish cakes, calamari, scallops, and the occasional bamboo shoots or baby corn. The broth is perfectly fiery without sacrificing flavor, and keeps well if you want to take your leftovers home and heat them up with fresh ingredients the next day. My sampling of their other dishes has largely been limited to snatching bites from others' plates, but they've all been very well executed. Now that I live in NYC and have a better sense of what "authentic" Japanese food might mean, I'd still choose Edokko over them any day -- for the tasty food, the generous portions, the always-friendly and prompt service, and the non-wallet-emptying prices, Edokko's a clear winner. read more

I've been coming here for over ten years. I love the family-style cooking here. It's like eating at a nisei or sansei's house. Authentic and with generous portions. One will not find fancy rolls here. The menu is extensive for a small place but all dishes are executed with care. If one is in a hurry, I'd eat elsewhere. But it'll be worth the wait.
