I decided not to try the sauces. Carlos was friendly and it was prepared quickly. It was $12.95 with taxes $14.41. Looking at this place from a far you really don't expect much. For years I would drive past it on my way to church, but never gave it a chance. I tried it for the first time today & when I say this place is the bomb; do heed my words with great attention. I ordered 2 Pupusa Locas & 2 Carne Asada Tacos. The Tacos tortillas were a perfect corn tortilla with extremely tender seasoned meat. Also the green sauce and red sauce ( I dont know what the sauces actually are) are so good with this. The Pupusas were the perfect moist & crispy combo with the world's best cheese pull. Did i also mention I showed up a few minutes before closing and got this high quality food, within 10 minutes. Seriously, best tacos I've had since I left Texas. Their pastor is perfect, carnitas were great, and the horchata is so good. I tried their flan and it could be better, but honestly, I don't care. It was definitely more about the tacos for me! I'll definitely come back. read more

Ok - appearances aside (this place is spartan, to say the least), the food passes muster and then some. Only real problem you may encounter is a bit of a language barrier, and maybe a short attention span, but trust me - the food is worth the trouble. Load up on tacos and pupusas (had the pork and cheese and cheese pupusas'; and beef, chicken, pork, and barbacoa tacos - pork and beef definitely the best). Skip dessert though... Ordered empanadas and they were lacking. Next time I think I'll try something grander, and there will be a next time, most definitely. If you live anywhere near the Burg, go to El Asador. read more

Definitely have a snack or two before trying to eat at El Asador. Food is very very good. But the wait staff's lack of attention to really anything makes coming here unbearable. 07/25/2017: Ordered placed over the phone at 12pm to dine in. (did this in order to limit the wait time for the food to arrive). Staff member on the phone said food would be ready around 12:20pm, arrived: party of 3 at 12:30pm. 1st plate comes out around 12:50 to be incorrect(ordered a sopa de Res, instead was given a sopa de pollo - Sent back) corrected and brought back with correct soup along with another member of party's meal (carne asada) Time: 1:15pm. 2/3 of the tables meals have been served and 3rd member is left to watch them eat as the wait staff had forgotten to place the order for the 3rd meal being a chicken torta. No drink orders have been taken. 1:30pm: still 3rd meal not served. Instead was seen that 1 of the only 2 waitresses running to the store next doors with bags of groceries for what I imagine to be for the kitchen staff and quite possibly my meal. (I unfortunately was the 3rd member of the table). By this time still no drinks were brought to table after only 3 waters were ordered. 1:40pm: Waitress comes with the waters (Bless Up) but still 3rd meal is missing. We ask what the delay was and she admits that the kitchen had run out of french fries but the torta was ready and it would only be a few more minutes. 1:45pm: Alas my meal is finally brought to the table for me to eat as if I had never seen food before. Sandwich temperature was sup par to say the least but the flavors were all there. I would have said something else if i hadn't already waited more than an hour for this $10 sandwich. Needless to say this place needs the presence of an experienced restaurant manager and an actually trained wait staff. Unfortunately I will not be returning under any circumstances. read more

My girlfriend is from El Salvador and we both moved to Fredericksburg for various reasons and were very unhappy with the lack of good ethnic food. El Asador was one of our first regular places in the area. It's very reasonable (like it should be), delicious, and she likes it because they play her novelas non-stop. The pupusas revueltas, tamales de elote and the horchata are all great. The majority of the customers are Salvadorians and the waitresses will speak english, but I'm not sure if that's always the case. read more

On a recommendation from a Salvadoran friend... We took the plunge into this small unassuming place. First off, I would not know AUTHENTIC if it bit me in the keester. With that said... I DO KNOW good food! There is a little language barrier which makes it all the more fun IMO. I love the Ala Carte choices, makes for great mix & match. The side sauces were excellent and not too hot. Even our "sissy" friends could eat them. :) The Chicken Tamales were wonderful, as was the Taco Carnitas and I could go on and on about the flavors and quality. Instead, to sum it up... 4 of us at the table for lunch and all 4 agreed this place is a keeper. I'm going back to try the Sopas. Humble atmosphere, very clean, reasonably priced. DO IT! Went there for the first time last weekend. The food was OK, but the perceived rushing by our server was a bit annoying. She was at our table several times in 5 minutes to see if we were ready to order. She was also there several times while we were eating to check on us. This was OK, but the attention got to be quite annoying. When it was time to pay the check, we waited for her to come by, but she finally told us that we had to go to the cash register to get our check and pay. The credit card machine was not working for American Express and I had to use a different card. Like I said, good food, but everything else lowers the rating. read more

Friends and I stopped in here after the Historic Half Marathon in Fredericksburg this weekend. We were craving some post-race tacos, and found this place in a quick Google search. Thank you, Google! We ordered pupusas, tacos, and burritos. All of those were delicious! I also highly recommend putting some of their green salsa on whatever your order, it's spicy and flavorful. Of the tacos, the table favorite was the chorizo. Absolutely delicious! The starting chips and salsa, however, left something to be desired. The red salsa was ketchupy and not very good. El Asador sells authentic Latino style food within a few miles of downtown Fredericksburg, Virginia. I have lived in walking distance of other Latino restaurants and still preferred to drive to El Asador based on food quality. The service is friendly and eager to help. Once seated customers are treated to on-the-house fresh corn chips and salsa. Unfortunately, the restaurant does not sell beer. Portions are moderate and flavor is huge! My recommendations from the menu are the Mexican-style tamale and the pupusas. A variety of pupusa fillings, including beef, pork, and cheese, is available. read more

Saw this place during my daily drive on Route 17 and decided to give it a try after seeing pics on Yelp. I'm always looking for authentic "California" Mexican food. Ordered 2 carnitas tacos and a carne burrito. Tacos were on point!!!! Didn't need the salsa, but gave it a try. Salsas are good. My order came with two types. The red has a nice smoky flavor. The green was very fresh and flavorful. I'm happy to report that I will be back! They also serve menudo daily. So don't have to wait til the weekends. read more

Dont order lobster they will serve you a lobster shell with no meat in lots of butter, a couple hard eggs and a fish cut... Similar thing will happen when [caldo de res] is ordered, they will serve you instant beef broth with preboiled meat, this is incredibly tasteless. read more

Been coming here for years, love the carne asada tacos and chicharron pupusa's. They also have excellent sauces.

I just tried this place for the first time and I have to say this is definitely a hidden gem. Very authentic Salvadorean food with that delicious sazon. The only reason I did not give it a 5 is because the service was very slow, but once the food came out it was so worth the wait. I will definitely be coming back with my daughters who loved it along with me ( and that's saying a lot seeing as they're picky eaters) read more

The starter chips sucked. Tasted stale and cold. Salsa looked like ragu sauce...straight out of a bottle. Taco del carnitas took awhile for them to bring out considering it's a small item.
