I am a wedding planner and my client hired El Coronel to cater a casual wedding in Sonoma this weekend, June 22, 2024. The food was really, really good. The appetizers were prepared hot, and there was plenty of chips and salsa. There was both beef and chicken fajita, with freshly grilled corn tortillas to wrap them in, rice, beans and an amazing guacomole salsa that had nice spicy heat that lingered on the back of the tongue. The pico de gallo was fresh, and the salsa roja was terrific. Even better, though, the service was top notch. The bar never really got backed up, even with four different mixed drinks, and the sparkling wine was poured right on time. The food servers were quick, efficient, yet pleasant and always smiling. Used to be a great establishment. Not anymore. Service is slow, checks are always wrong, order a second drink never came, but was billed. Brought back bill after we brought it to their attention and was given somebody else's bill. Not one "I am so sorry". All the positive reviews seem to say the same thing. Hmmmm are they being told what to put? Granted, this is the only Mexican restaurant with a full bar, but food is meh. If they make a mistake, they will blame either you or give some made up excuse. Dropped off car for service at Freeman Toyota and noticed this food truck. I ordered 2 tacos. One chicken and one pastor. Came with roasted peppers, caramelized onions, sliced radishes, chips and salsa. I chose the green salsa for my chips and tacos. Delicious. Hot , fast and friendly. Good prices. I always check meats for Mexican food. Pastor was juicy, flavorful and generous portioned. Same with chicken. read more

Just... wow! I recommend this restaurant 1000%. Our drinks were never empty, the complementary dips and chips were always refilled before they were even gone and the food was absolutely amazing. The service was on point and the manager stopped by our table several times to make sure that we were happy. Along with our meal, we received complementary nachos, dessert and shots. I am sad that I do not live in this area and cannot visit more often, but we will definitely stop by whenever we are in the area. Highly recommended! read more

Stumbled into this place driving past Sebastopol. The place is very inviting. There's indoor and outdoor sitting. They have great Mexican music playing! The staff is very nice and welcoming. Waters and chip and salsa are brought to your table right away! Their red & green salsa are delicious and authentic. On top of that you are also served a cup of refried beans (amazing) and a mini nachos which was a delicious surprise, never been to a Mexican restaurant that also gave you a side of nachos. For drinks we ordered a Michelada, tamarindo and Horchata, all very well made and delicious. They have a FULL bar and a wide variety of non alcoholic drinks as well. We ordered the Tortilla soup (huge), Enchilada Suiza & steak & a two item with a chile relleno & a sope. Food came quick, was nice and hot, all beans were really good and tender. At the end we got a complimentary sopapilla with whipped cream and a strawberry or cherry sauces drizzled. Everything was well priced, for the portions we got. For the 3 of us it was less than $100. Totally recommend this place and will for sure make the hour drive from our home to come to this place again! read more

I've been to El Coronel twice. To say that this food is pedestrian and underwhelming would pretty much sum it up. Nothing special, just run of the mill refried beans, Spanish rice, and whatever your entree happens to be. Drinks ar so so. First off, the food is wonderful and the young man who waited on us was fabulous BUT, we were there for lunch today and they hand us a LUNCH MENU where their house margaritas are priced $7.99. We ordered 2 each along with lunch and the bill comes and charged $11.99 for each margaritas. After bringing this to their attention, the owner tell us "no actually they are $11.99 and that is a mistake on the lunch menu and our cash register is not updated" and refused to grant us what his lunch menu stated. TRUST ME, IT IS NOT ABOUT THE MONEY, IT IS ABOUT WHAT IS RIGHT. Came to celebrate a family member's birthday. Although we were a larger group, there were only 4 other tables, and yet, we did not receive our food orders for an hour and a half. I wish I was exaggerating, but it was an hour and a half of waiting for food that after numerous reminders to the waitstaff, was still not exactly what we had ordered to begin with. However, after waiting for so long, we took what we were given so we could get out of there as quickly as possible. Food was not only not what we ordered, but also lackluster. Me and my girl went there last night we ordered a horchata and it had so much powder that I couldn't drink and didn't have flavor, then we ordered a carnitas plate and the rice seems the cooks put a lot salt because it was too salty and disgusting. I ordered coronels sampler and the tamal was cold and so greasy along with the other stuff in the plate didn't have taste all you can taste was the flavor of the cold flautas. Friendly service (our server Magaly was great!!), large portions, and great variety of dishes. The chips were not greasy, and the rice and beans on the side of our dish were also well prepared and flavorful. The decor and music also felt authentic and added to the overall ambiance. Service? I don't think so. I walked in to get some take out and it was like I was invisible as a young waitress worked on her makeup at the bar. I waited for the woman helping the phone order guy get his order and then as he was finished she picked up a call and she could of told the phone order person to hold but she didn't. I've been coming to El Coronel off and on for over 10 years. The food is good but service has always been lacking. You need to go hunt down someone to get a drink refill, more chips, salsa or a proper knife for cutting steak. Doesn't matter if the place is full or practically empty. Coming sense is the staff to check regularly with each table .. or at least make eye contact just in case you need something. Again the food is good... the service needs a bit of work and if the manager(s) or owners keep letting it slip Then they to need a wake up call. read more

I went on a trip to Sebastopol, and at the Coronel I enjoyed a meal and margaritas in a pleasant atmosphere. A girl with contagious energy and a lovely smile served us. I really appreciated that she introduced herself when we greeted her, and she always very pleasant whenever she approached our table. In the end, she sent us off with some small desserts on the house, telling us that dessert goes to the heart, not the stomach, and how true that is. We wew happy. Ask for Alisia. Fast attentive service. Excellent house margaritas. My wife had a carnitas mole burrito, which was huge. I had the chicken mole enchiladas. Lots of extremely good food. We loved the mole. great dog friendly outdoor seating. chips and three special dips served upon arrival can be a meal in itself. ordered their tortilla soup for 7.99 and i was pleasantly surprised. it was a very hearty bowl full of chicken bits, corn chips, fresh herbs and seasoning. served piping hot it was one of the better mexican style soups i have had. combined with a shedded chicken taco it became a very effective 11.99. lunch. pete my terrier loved getting some of the broth covered chicken. the staff was very welcoming and attentive great choice for lunch. read more
