Poor service, mediocre food, and okay margaritas... sums up my first (and last) visit to El Maguey. I was excited to see they had several patio seats open when we arrived, since it was a summer Saturday night. However, when I asked if we could sit outside, the hostess simply said that they were only sitting people indoors. I then watched them seat other parties on the patio after they already sat us inside... Our waitress was not friendly at all, taking forever to even get our drink order and ignored us for most of the visit. The food and drinks were fine, but they were nothing spectacular. Overall, the food was really overpriced and the service was terrible. Do not recommend, there's plenty of other Mexican restaurants in town that will treat you much better and have way tastier food! read more

I have been eating at this restaurant for over 20 years, and it is a good deal for the meals usually and we like it. I stopped in today though to the only remaining Grindstone location in Columbia, MO for a to go order since we're still socially distancing right now personally. I ordered steak fajitas (light on the steak meat, heavy veggies), no sour cream, and a Mexican salad with no dairy (cheese or sour cream) or guacamole for our order. Order was prompt, and when I asked for extra salsa they didn't even charge me, which was nice (they refill free in restaurant eat ins usually) but they messed up our Mexican salad order (guac on it and no cheese on the fajita beans or guac on it). It can happen, no biggie with special orders glad we checked though. I didn't take it back, we just swapped metal containers partway through eating, since it was family. I did still go back in then though because we were also missing the 3 flour tortillas that come with the faijitas. I was in within 5 min of our order being taken, but the lady at the register told me they were in there. I told her my mother checked and they were not. She told me to go check again. So, on a cold drizzly Feb. day I went back to the car and we were right, no tortillas still. There were numerous to go orders so I am guessing she just put them in the wrong order, but it was weird over some flour and water to basically call me a liar and not give or charge me for extra tortillas, which cannot be much cost) and send me out empty handed, I wasn't lying, I've been a 20+ year customer, I used to go to the Conley Road one before they closed as it is closer to me. I didn't go back in as I have tortillas at home, and it felt awkward after being called a liar basically, but with a 25 min drive back home they were cold by the time we got home, and they were supposed to be included in my order. I should not have needed to buy my own tortillas for $13.50 lunch fajitas (no special Sunday deals like the rest of the week, which is on me, not them). I've generally had good experiences with eat in here, but I'll hesitate to do another to go order after today. Customer is right El Maguey, didn't you learn that? I mean who would make up no tortillas to get some free add on? read more

I've heard good things about this location from my family, but my husband and I were underwhelmed. I ordered an entree that came with several items, intending to get a sampling of offerings. I was not impressed. Flavours all seemed muddled together with too much heat/ spiciness. I don't usually complain about spice, but was suffering. And my chile relleno tasted just like my enchiladas. On the contrary, the beef taco meat had absolutely zero flavor and was overly dry. Service was slow and inattentive, it was obvious that our server was more interested in leaving work than refilling drinks. Pretty nice colorful authentic Mexican restaurant. The Queso with beef and chips .. . I would recommend their steak Quesadilla as well. Reasonable price on majority of the dishes. The tables we were given were not clean and it seems they were training a few waiters and hence when we were dining their focus seems to be on the training than the customer and hence we felt that they failed to pay attention to details. This El Maguey location is always a winner! The food is consistently delicious, the drinks are always good, and the staff is always friendly. Their happy hour also has a good deal on margaritas. My last time dining here was last week for happy hour. The last time I was here was for happy hour last week. I had the shrimp enchiladas and a strawberry margarita. It was all very good. I was surprised that at this location, the shirmp is diced and served on top of the enchiladas, instead of inside it, like at the other locations that I've been to. It was still very good and very filling. No complaints over here. Keep in mind, that you're supposed to pay at the hostess desk, but when i've put my card on the table because I've forgotten that, my server was always kind enough to handle it for me. read more

This is the El Maguey restaurant closest to me. While the restaurant is part of a chain, each one has its own look and feel. This one is my favorite. It has the feel of a family-owned place even though it isn't. The interior is nice. There are a few tables, while the rest of the place is all booths. The TVs normally have Spanish TV shows playing. The food is great. The best Mexican in the St. Louis area. I LOVE LOVE LOVE their chicken taco salad. It is perfect every time. And the fresh chips are great. The service is great as well. The employees know us by now and remember our orders most of the time without having to ask. They always refill chips and drinks quickly. The waitstaff has always been an incredible pleasure. Every single time I have been there, it has been a good experience. One particular experience that has stood out to me is this. A year ago, I had a breakdown and decided to withdraw from my current college, take a semester off, and then transfer. I was beside myself about leaving my friends, so my brother took me out to get dinner and a margarita. I had very obviously been crying (i.e. EXTREMELY puffy eyes, blotchy face, red eyes, whole 9 yards) and the waiter was very kind. When he came back to give us our drinks, he had made a tulip out of foil and put in on my drink. He didn't say anything, didn't pry, but I still think about that to this day. I wish I remembered his name because I would tell the management how much of an impact he made for me that day! read more

I love El Maguey. Never had any issues when we ordered our food in the restaurant. My kids get the same thing every time, a really basic bean burrito with the cheese sauce on top. I ordered the food through doordash. I ordered 2 bean burritos with "special instructions" of placing cheese sauce on top of each at $4something a piece. Which is the normal price. I later got notice from doordash that El Maguey raised the price an additional $8.39. I tried to contact the restaurant personally because I was afraid there was some kind of mistake and they didn't understand my order. Nobody answered the phones so I contacted doordash and they expressed that the restaurant is entitled to raise the prices due to any "special instructions". I personally do not feel that cheese sauce on top of two basic bean burritos does not cost an additional $8.39 on top of the $4.something a piece. Absolutely ridiculous. read more

Miss C. got the fajita pita (talk about fusion!!) -- $6.50 -- she chose chicken as her protein (beef also available), served with lettuce, sour cream and pico, accompanied by fries. Miss C.'s friend got taco salad fajita (another interesting mix) -- $7.10 -- she chose chicken as her protein (steak also available) served in a crisp flour taco shell with melted cheese sauce; and sauteed onions, green pepper and tomatoes; topped with lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, sour cream and guac. I got fish tacos -- $9.99 -- three small flour tortilla tacos of fried tilapia (kinda small pieces of fish), lettuce and cheese, accompanied by the requisite beans and rice. Miss C. liked her pita. The fries were homemade and either breaded or coated with seasoning (or both), and tasted good. The taco salad was rather a runny mess. She drained all the liquid accumulating in the bottom, and was able to eat some of it. It just became a gooey thing. I think there were too many ingredients. My tacos were good. Wish there had been more fish in each taco. Each was individually wrapped in foil. I ate two, adding salsa. I added hot sauce to the beans and ate some. The rice was incorrigible. Service was spot-on. When hot sauce was requested, he brought out three different kinds. We had a to-go vessel of fries, one taco, rice and beans. read more

The food is decent but the management has much to be desired. They will do whatever the can to avoid accepting a coupon. And don't seem to care about their customers. We had a $5 off with the purchase of two entrees. We ordered two entrees, a coke, and a beer that was on special. When it came time to pay our bill, we were told we could not use the coupon because the beer was a special. I asked if they would have honored the coupon if my husband had ordered water instead of beer and was told "yeah, sure". We dined with another couple. They had a buy one get one entree coupon. It too was not honored. The reason was because one of the meals (the less expensive one) was on special. Okay.... It's buy one, get one. Who cares if it is on special? Before he swiped my card I said that I was very disappointed how this was being handled and that neither couple would be returning. He just shrugged his shoulders. So it's safe to say, with all of the other options for Mexican in the Valley there is no need to take your business to this location. read more

I wish I could give a rating lower than the number one. The beef quesadilla, tacos, and burrito all had grease running all over the plate, but the quesadillas were by far the worst. The waiter simply said, that's how the beef does. I'm sorry sir, check with Chipotle or Qdoba, there is not any grease covering the plate at either of these establishments. The food is terrible. El Maguey is my go to place for getting a cheap standard Mexican food fix. I usually come here for a lunch date or with coworkers for a quick marg and dinner after work. Their margaritas are great and the food is constantly good. You will not find anything out of the ordinary on the menu here, so a craving for a specific meal and its consistency is why I have came back here many times. I usually get the same thing when I come here. The white cheese dip, a strawberry margarita, 1 soft taco, 1 chicken enchilada, and their mexican rice. You cannot go wrong. The service is hit or miss, but again I do not come here expecting anything fabulous. I would never go out of my way to come to El Maguey, but if you live or work nearby chances are you will like it and come back for an occasional Mexican food craving like it do. And if you do not live nearby, El Maguey is a local area chain so chances are there is another location somewhere near you. read more

The true and authentic Mexican cheese dip. My great love. The kind of cheese dip you lick off the plate. A cheese among cheeses. If you have not tried white Mexican dip then you have no idea what I am talking about. If you have well then...you totally get it. The best I have had. The rest of the menu is great as well. For less than 30 bucks, you and your honey can get; chips and salsa, a killer guac, 2 maragritas, and two dinner platters. That's a lot of food and one heck of a deal...that's muy bueno! This was the worst! 9/16/16, 7:30pm We entered the restaurant and stood there for 10 mins. No one greeted us or offered to seat us. Finally, after 15 mins., we asked to be seated. There were 4 of us plus a 2 yr. old. The 4 adults ordered drinks and one of us asked for water. I then excused myself to use the ladies room. It's a single ladies bathroom. Needless to say, clogged toilet, filled with toilet paper and poo. Gross! I left the bathroom and told them the problem -- 15 mins later, no one had addressed the clogged toilet, so I had to go to the restaurant next door to use the restroom (Satchmo's bar and grill), and then returned. My friend then asked for water a 2nd time (remember that I said we had a 2 yr old -- all he wanted was water). Our drinks then came, and we ordered. one of the drinks ordered was a Dos Equis Amber on draft. It was flat and tasted like sewer water. Needless to say that was the end. We paid for our drinks, cancelled our food order and got out of there. Water never arrived! I would not recommend and will never go again. Poor service, dirty and inattentive. read more

I admit I rarely eat Tex Mex when I'm in the mood for Mexican food, and I rarely stop by El Magueys because there are so many of them in this town, I just couldn't remember which ones are decent and which ones are below average. We stopped by here on a Friday night around 6 PM. It was already filling up. If we didn't show up for another half an hour, we would have to wait in a line that snaked out the door. Everyone ordered Fajitas (really, it's the only thing I crave when I get Tex Mex). I got the El Maguey fajitas which had chorizo, chicken, shrimp, and beef. One thing I like about this place is how many types of fajitas they offer and they are very reasonable priced. Most places charge you more than $14 for a fajita, especially when you are talking about "supreme", "multiple meat". But you can save a few bucks here, especially if you choose the double serving (two people share). All the ingredients were tasty. Chicken was a little dry, but the vegetables were well cooked. It was a little on the greasy side. I had a banana margarita that was the shit. I know it sounds gross but try it next time you crave margaritas. Service was fantastic. Our waiter was very efficient and checked on us constantly. We got our chip basket refilled multiple times before our entrees got onto the table. All in all, this may be one of my favorite Tex Mex places in town, on par with Las Palmas # 3 on Page and Matador in the Chesterfield Valley. read more

This makes placing an order for carry out ahead of your arrival exclusive to calling in. Unfortunately, when I did this, the lady taking my order struggled with English thus forcing me to order when I arrived and making me wait. Even then when I got home the order of 6 items was incorrect on 2 of them. Lastly, the food was mediocre, at best. I learned my lesson and will continue to patronize the Chimis location a 1/2 mile west on Olive the next time I eat Mexican food. read more

It's been almost 4 years since I ate at an El Maguey. Has anything changed? Am I missing anything? Let's find out. At least the restaurant looks well worn. Now for some food and drinks. It's hot outside so why not order a cold pitcher of Bud Light for $9.99. Bad idea. The beer arrived warm and flat. Even the two mugs were at room temperature. At least the complimentary basket of tortilla chips were fresh and crispy. That's a plus! Wish I could say the same about the watery salsa. For the main course I should've walked out. But we stayed and I bravely ordered the El Ranchero. A seemingly interesting combination dinner featuring: a verde chicken enchilada, a mini chicken chimichanga, and a beef burrito complete with a side of mexican rice. The chimichanga was actually quite good. The white meat chunk chicken did not taste canned and was nicely seasoned with cumin and green chiles. The verde chicken enchilada didn't fare as well. Ground beef was mistakingly used instead of chunk chicken. In addition; the ground beef was extremely dry and contained minimal seasoning other than a little chopped onion. The red sauce that covered the burrito resembled the watery house salsa. Too bad! The Spanish rice was special. My friend ordered the steak chimi dinner. The chimichanga was quite small and filled with grizzly steak. Overall, with the stale beer and all, bad deal. I guess that's the reason I stayed away so long. read more

Horrible management! Threatened to call cops because i was unhappy with the chili rellenos that were made with prego spaghetti sauce. It is my son's birthday and they ruined it by insisting prego is the norm for chili rellenos! Asked me if I had ever had them before and everything! Duh!
