Great spot! My husband and I came for lunch on a Saturday. Victoria was our server and she was fantastic! Super speedy, nice, courteous. I ordered a vegetarian burrito Christmas style & she pointed out that both of the chiles are made with meat broth; so I should specify needing vegetation sauce. Happy hour from 3pm- closing if you are seated in the bar area! Excellent food and service! We really enjoyed what we ate - stuffed sopapilla with carne adovada and the shrimp/calabacita enchiladas! They also had live music on a Friday night. It was busy but seemed everyone was seated pretty quickly. We'll be back. read more

I'm so sad to say that we can no longer go to El Patron and sit in the bar area. My friend and I have been going once or twice a month to get nachos and margaritas. Occasionally we order a full dinner instead. The food and margaritas as absolutely delicious. The problem lately is the slow and horrible service. The last time we went it took a server 30 minutes to even acknowledge us. Therefore we moved up to the bar. We love one of the lady bartenders there. Unfortunately she was so slammed that it took her another 20 minutes to acknowledge us and make us margaritas. People we waited 50 minutes for a margarita!!!! It took another 15 minutes to order and another 45 minutes to actually get our nachos. We also noticed a bottle with simple syrup in it or something and it actually had green moldy spots inside of the bottle!!! It was so nasty. I rarely give bad reviews but with as much time and money that we have spent here to be treated so poorly by being ignored for so long we decided we cannot come anymore. Super sad face. We tried the restaurant after seeing the commercials. We were looking to take out of town guests but we thought we'd try it first ourselves. Glad we did. The service was good, the food was terrible. I had the El Patron Tacos. I figured if they branded their tacos after the restaurant, I'd be in for a treat! Nope. Nothing special about them. The crispy corn taco shells tasted and had the texture of the kind that comes from a box already made, I suspect they were. chicken had no flavor tacos were just blah with lettuce and cheese with a little cup of salsa to pour on them... I'll be looking for a better New Mexican restaurant to take our visitors. read more

We've been to this location in excess of 30 times. The beef fajitas always delight. I asked if they had a change in kitchen staff recently because our fajitas and vegetables were burned to a crisp. I showed a piece to the nice server to show the front of house manager. Manager said "The fajitas continue to cook in the cast iron skillet". I'm aware of this. This is why when they place it off the grill, they squeeze alittle oil on it and it arrives at your table sizzling. This sizzling aroma also helps other tables to order the fajitas. These arrived burnt no steam or sizzle. After 29 years as GM of corporate restaurants, she was in complete denial as to what was happening. Only deflection. The food and margaritas are pretty good. I like the steak and shrimp tacos. Combination plates are all right if you're in the mood. Carne adova is good. The "uno mas tiempo" margarita is my favorite. The patio seating is nice. They have low key live music inside that is not obnoxious and my kids love it. The service is pretty much a disaster much of the time. The service on the patio can be very very slow. We have waited 25 min with a reservation for 4. They have spilled a margarita on my wife at least twice. On holidays they do special menus and lose their collective minds. If this restaurant was in a normal city it would die but i am sure I will be back next month. read more

My experience at El Patron was decidedly average. I probably wouldn't choose to eat there again, but if I had to go back I wouldn't refuse. The highlights of dinner ironically were the freebies. We got great chips and salsa (spicy!) to start the meal and delicious sopapillas with honey to end it. But my entree was just okay. I was excited to try the blue corn enchiladas - I chose red chile and added chicken. The blue corn tortillas and chile were pretty good, but the chicken was unbelievably dry. All in all, it was fine. There's definitely better New Mexican food in Albuquerque, but you also do worse. read more

Completely worthless!!! No one answers the phone, Cant use the web site to order because it will not let you hold certain items. Or... On the taco plate, (of 3) will not let you order 2 of 1 or 1 of the other. Wont let you mix. Called like 5 times, no answer, when you do get an answer it is a recording and you cant leave a message. I have eaten here before, wanted to try the Tacos. BUT NOPE!! Stay away. The is much much better food at other places that will answer the phone. read more

We got four meals to go this evening, or tried to at least. I had the enchilada casserole, which in theory comes with sides of beans and rice, though they forgot the rice. My husband had the blue corn enchiladas, again in theory coming with beans and rice, and again they forgot the rice. Then they forgot the fourth entree altogether, so they put the first three entrees under the warming lamp while they cobbled together the fourth meal. We have been regulars for 10+ years and we love the food, ambiance and especially Agnieszka and Ricardo at the ElParron on Wyoming, we've been to the El Patrim on Montgomery too, we love the Wyoming location because its smaller, more personable! One issue we do have however is the Mgr Christina, who is not supportive of the staff, one Sunday, customer orders were in the window for a very long time and when she finally came out to help, which was way overdue, she yelled out staff names, to pick up and deliver orders but didn't help the staff, just complained and yelled their names, we thought that was inappropriate, and unfair. We just love the other staff at El Patron on Wyoming! Food is always awesome and hot and fresh, Thank you Jimmy! read more

Amazing service and food! Alan/Alex? was a very nice server and very professional. The live band makes the experience well worth it. The complimentary chips & salsa, to the chocolate mouse for kids and the sopapillas are soo good and unheard of for a restaurant to offer such amazing compliments. My 5 yr old Son loves this place. I will def be coming back when I return to ABQ and letting all of our friends know of this delicious place! read more

History

Established in 2012.

Veteran restauranteur and businessman Nick Kapnison and partners Nadine and Jimmy Daskalos have grown up in the restaurant business. Them and their families have, throughout the years, owned landmark restaurants in Albuquerque and elsewhere (as far as Acapulco Mexico...). One of them being the original "El Patron", opened in the 70's and ran a successful decade until it was sold in the eighties. The partners took over this old mexican plaza-themed restaurant (a "historic" building itself) on Montgomery, and after a long renovation, they reapplied the old "El Patron" concept, reviving some of the old recipes and updating others to suit Albuquerque's unique palate.

This place was really disgusting. Not only was the food cold and unpleasantly textured, but the service was dog shit. The floors here looked like they haven't been mopped in years! And the sugar packed container at my table was dirty with some mystery red sauce on it. That was there before I even got my drinks! I'm not a germaphobe by any means but JESUS CHRIST. THIS PLACE SURE MADE ME FEEL LIKE ONE. As for the service- well... I wouldn't blame the servers. They seem to be doing their best with the small staff they've got. (After what I'm about to tell you, you'll know why they're so short staffed) When I say nothing could have prepared me for what I witnessed that night I was there... I mean NOTHING. When I saw this my heart and stomach dropped. I saw a manager corner a waitress and yell at her. I already saw her running around trying to get the job done, and being a server myself back in the day this shook me. I felt so sick to my stomach. If he talks to the staff this was IN FRONT OF COSTOMERS- I can't imagine how he treats them when no one is around. What the fuck? After talking to other staff members I found out his name was Justin. Came here on a Saturday evening, it was busy but we were seated immediately. The person at the front desk seemed like they had absolutely no idea what to do. Generally just tentative and not taking initiative. Lucky for her, there were open spaces - of which we occupied. The customary chips and salsa quickly followed. The chips were very thin and a little too salty for my palette. The salsa didn't seem fresh either as it identically resembled the thing you'd generally pour from a jar. I decided to order a New Mexico staple - The Green Chile Stew. It was affordable and I was hoping the portion would be generous, alas it was not. It was a fairly small bowl. I ordered some sopapillas to go with it. They didn't arrive for 7 minutes after my stew arrived which to me, is unacceptable. By the time my sopapillas arrived - my stew was cold. The stew did taste good though although I felt it was a small portion. Overall this was a very average experience. Albuquerque is full of this sort of restaurant. A restaurant that doesn't try and do anything different, they play everything safe and take advantage of the customer base being used to mediocrity. I'll pass this next time. read more

Had a great dinner at El Patron at the Montgomery location! The food and drinks were both excellent from start to finish. I ordered the shrimp tacos with rice and calabacitas, and everything was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. My friend got the chicken tacos and loved those too. We started with chips and salsa and added a side of guacamole that had the perfect spicy kick without being overwhelming. The margaritas were delicious and paired perfectly with the meal. To finish it off, we had fresh sopapillas with honey that came out warm and were the perfect ending to dinner. One of the best parts of the experience was the live mariachi band going table to table taking song requests. They did an amazing job and really added to the fun atmosphere of the restaurant. The portions were great, service was friendly, and the whole experience made for such a fun night out. Definitely a place we'll be coming back to! read more

These were the best I've ever had--crispy on the outside, perfectly tender on the inside, and stuffed with a delicious blend of cheese and spices. My wife has a citrus allergy, one time the chef made a mistake on our order and the manager came over and apologized and then waived our whole bill! I have been back several times and aside from the one issue, which they promptly resolved, the food, service and drinks have been fantastic.
