El Pollo Rico was my first Peruvian chicken spot. After over 15 years since this experience I've patronized quite a few different places and ventured back to where the journey began to compare. Spoiler Alert: It's number 1....

1. Though what I really like about the place changed. When I first went all they offered was Chicken, Cole slaw, and fries. In a world of many option I actually thought this sent a message that we are so good we only offer a limited choice that's you will enjoy. Tbf the fries can't compete w McD or Chikfila Waffle fries but they were good. The service counter is modernized and they are efficient and friendly. The layout if the restaurant is still basic like the limited menu they used to have. No frills no gimmicks just good food. Still the same vibe The chicken was still very good. Other places are fairly close but Apollo Rico is just a touch better. The charred seasoning is evident. What tipped the scales for me in comparison to other places I've been is the green sauce. It liked fresh. It wasnt like other places where that has the consistency of ketchup it looked bright green and freshly made vs other places where it seems as if it was poured out a container.

We ordered a half chicken with yuca and beans as the sides. It was very quick, we got our food within seconds it felt like. The chicken was probably the most flavorful kind of Pollo a la Brasa that I have had. It wasn't too greasy...

either. Just very tasty. The beans were delicious!! I didn't think I would like them as much. The yuca was pretty good too. Nice and crispy. I do wish they had slightly more options for sides, maybe even an Arroz Chaufa. This is a no frills kinda place so don't expect anything too fancy. But it is clean! And that's what makes it more authentic and fun in my opinion! Will definitely go back if I'm in the area.

need a new word for how much motion this had. It may have caused all ring cameras within a 3 mile radius to go off. A top 5 bird I've ever had. The sides were also operating at a high level, but if we are being honest that portion of rice and beans were light. Maybe the Bourdain episode got to them a bit, idk. The sweet plantains were just as life changing as the bird. Sweet plantains have to be the most underrated side in the world. The more data I collect, the more I am starting to see that no one does chicken better than the Peruvians. It's like the Dagestanis in MMA right now. They just have the game on lock. El Pollo Rico is one of those legendary chicken spots that you can't miss if you're in the area. It's one of the few restaurants that can truly unite the world. Flavorful chicken, good sides, attentive service. Plenty of parking but get filled fast as this place is very popular. Expect to wait a while if you come during the week at around noon. Plenty of seating inside with tables that can accommodate large parties. A few desserts available too such as gelato, alfajores, flan, rum cake and tres leches.

I went to this establishment today around 3:30 PM to purchase one whole chicken, all dark meat. A meal I have purchased here since high school, we are talking over 20 years. However, due to a very rude and unreasonable employee, I left the establishment with nothing. He refused to sell me dark meat chicken because he had mostly white meat left. When I explained to him that I do not and have never eaten white meat and I'm willing to wait until more dark meat is available, he refused. He mentioned the only way he could sell me a whole chicken would be two pieces of white meat and two pieces of dark meat, but he was not willing to sell me four pieces of dark meat. I have never experienced an establishment who sells only chicken refusing to allow a customer to at least wait for what they want. Disappointed! This individual should not interact with customers as he will continue to drive away business.

When I said I was coming down to DC for a weekend, my comments were flooded with El Pollo Rico requests. What really got me was one person said Anthony Bourdain shot an episode here back in 2007. Done. Sold. That guy is on my Mount Rushmore. I stepped out of my uber onto a freshly paved parking lot in what felt like the back of a strip center. I opened the door and nearly fell to my knees when the unmistakable smell of Peruvian Chicken blessed my nostrils. Chemical warfare in the best way possible. This is my happy place. The interior is the definition of no frills. It's what I imagine a classic chicken spot would look like in Peru: Chickens rotating over a fire breathing charcoal, brightly colored metal chairs and tables, a run down white tile floor straight out of the 90s, and a handful of pictures lining the walls that show love to the home land. These types of places hold a special place in my heart, as you will see people from all walks of life. You will see some fresh off a job site and others fresh out of Capitol Hill. El Pollo Rico specializes in just the one thing and serves it well. As the name suggests, simply roasted chicken with delicious sides to complement are what you should expect, and while you're not going to be blown away, the amount of food, complexity of flavors, and price will keep this as a top choice for your lunch or dinner run. Ordering from their short list of menu items is simple (quarter, half, or whole chicken) and since all their chicken is roasted in a rotisserie, they're usually pretty quick to fulfill the orders (as long as they have them already cooked). Just get there early before the crowds of locals to ensure you get something before they sell out! We decided on takeout but they also do have some casual seating inside. The chicken is seasoned well with their dry rub and super moist on the inside. Each bite of their white meat is first met with flavor followed up by the tender meaty interior. And don't forget about the meat on those bones and the soft bones! As for sides, this time around, we got mainly fries and fried plantains. You can never go wrong with a bit of crispy potato and sweetness. Always delicious when fresh but with the fine work of an air fryer, they come out just as good as leftovers! Overall, El Pollo Rico is your neighborhood hotspot for rotisserie chicken with a Peruvian flair. Exceptional tastes at reasonable prices make this mom and pop small business a gem to hold dear in this community! Whether you're a local or visitor, this is worth swinging by to get a taste! This chicken spot is always good. Although I have tried others in the area, El Pollo Rico is always going to be my go to. In addition to the chicken being the star of the show, the beans and rice, the fries, and the sauces are all a home run. If you're looking for a quick lunch spot, or don't feel like cooking dinner, you can't go wrong with El Pollo Rico. Every time I come here, I always receive service with a smile. That can be a little tricky when you have people waiting and on a time crunch. But they always manage to do a good job with customer service. El Puerto Rico also offers the option to eat in. If you wanna grab something quick and don't wanna have to eat in your car or risk it getting cold by the time you get home, there's plenty of seating for you, friends, and family. The price point is reasonable and on par for the area and for what you receive. If you have never been and happen to be in the area, don't hesitate to stop by. You will not, and I repeat, you will not be disappointed! Happy eating!

Finally got to try this spot after having the highest of expectations forever. Although the line was long when we walked in, they move quick with the orders so it's not too bad of a wait. Everything is served so fresh, and this is honestly one of the most macro and wallet friendly meals you can choose to have when eating out. $17 ish for a 1/2 chicken regular with 2 sides is honestly a great deal. I've never had such a flavorful marinade on Peruvian chicken before! The yuca fries were also crispy and perfect ($1 extra for these). And the plantains were also cooked perfectly. The green sauce was good but not as tasty as some of the other places I've had it. They serve authentic looking firenze gelatos for about $4 too - definitely need to try those sometime. They have flavors like coconut, guava, lucuma, passion fruit, and chirimoya! The place is super hole in the walley, the tables and chairs were so colorful it brought my kindergarten memories back. But ambiance isn't the important thing here - the food is.

This is one of the places that I was told you have to try since moving here, and me and my lover finally did. The chicken is 5 stars and is worth a trip here. The sides and sauces are 3 stars or below. You get your food quick and the dining area is nice and clean. I recommend to at least check it out if you are in the area but I wouldn't make a special trip.

This is an Arlington staple that has been recommended by many. I am always skeptical of rotisserie chicken since it can easily be very dry if done wrong. This is not the case here. The chicken comes fresh out the oven and is super juicy with a nice slight char flavor. Paired with the crispy fried yuca and some white sauce makes for an amazing bite! There's a reason why this is an Arlington institution that you must try!

The staff here are super friendly and move very quickly, parking is limited if they're super busy. Just to keep note, it isn't cheaper to order a la carte chicken, as you have to order your food with two sides (same price if you don't get sides) Half chicken with 2 sides ran me about $20 which included a $2 tip. The chicken is on the crispier side and being very honest I've had better in the northern va area. I did really like the Yucca here as it was cooked perfectly!

About a 2-2.5: I was excited to try El Pollo Rico out as another Peruvian chicken option in the area. The chicken itself was okay, where the skin was well-seasoned, but did not permeate throughout the whole meat. The sauces that come with seemed a little bit watered down for me. The aji sauce seems more mustard-based rather than the salty tanginess that you usually expect. I give it 3.5 stars The chicken is good. The seasoning is delicious, skin so good. But the white meat can be a bit dry. Anyway, the chicken just isn't enough for me. The sides are miserable here. Plain white rice, (bad) cole slaw, steak fries. No thanks Yellow sauce is good. Green sauce is spicy but that's all. I've been here a few times now and also gotten both EPR and super pollo at the same time, and SP wins for me hands down. The chicken is just as good, and the sauce and choice of sides puts it miles ahead in my book. read more

I've never had Peruvian food in my life and this was an awesome first bite of it. I discovered this place from watching Anthony Bourdain and knew I just had to come here. We took a taxi here which is probably the only way you can get here if you don't have a car yourself. It wasn't too crowded at first since it was kinda early on a weekday, but as time went on there were a lot of business people that came to pick up big lunch orders to take back to work. A very good sign. My Aunt and I split the half chicken with rice and fries. The chicken was the absolute star. I went at it Filipino style, just with my hands. It's probably the best way to eat chicken like this. It was juicy and a little tender. The spices on the skin made it. I couldn't tell exactly what the spices were, it's just something I've never experienced before. They were delicious nevertheless. The rice and the fries were just there to sop up the leftover spices and juices after demolishing the chicken. We got ourself a taxi back home and I wish we had brought some back for my Dad, because I knew he would love this place too. We almost came back here for dinner, but it was a little too far and we were tired from walking around Arlington that day. I really wish we had made the effort to come back twice in one day. As pollo la brasa goes, EPR gets top marks and is my favorite locally. Seasoning can make or break peruvian chicken, and EPR's is bold and flavorful, while still maintaining that familiarity that makes you feel at home. Always cooked to perfection, the skin is firm with the slightest crunch while the inside overflows with juice. Not overly greasy as many are, and never overcooked like other spots. Like many of the best things in life, they keep it simple - two choices of sides are coleslaw and fries, along with house-made green and yellow sauce. It's a hearty meal, a great value, top-shelf taste, and that home-cooked goodness just like Abuela made. read more

Never had a bad experience. Food is always great. Sometimes it's a little loud but it's a gem of a place. Everyone I've brought has loved it too. I think it's cash only so be prepared for that. There's an atm onsite. This place made me: 1. Love cole slaw and 2. Mix my food because it's somehow better that way. read more

Top notch Peruvian chicken! The building is older and the interior is dated, but don't let that deter you. I think most customers opt for carry out anyway, and that's what I do. I was told the recipe for the chicken marinade is top secret and it's easy to see why - you'll never taste anything like it in the area. Also don't be turned off by the long lines - it moves fast. read more

(I'm currently visiting an old friend of mine in the VA, and this is one of the places he took me to.) I'm a sucker for chicken, and Peruvian chicken is one of my favorites: not too saucy, very flavorful, and closest to au naturel - thus accentuating the capabilities of the chicken without sacrificing its essence; so when my friend recommended this place, I was understandably excited. The inner decor was very colorful - kinda cute. But I'm no interior design major, so I'm not one to dwell on that (and we ordered to-go, so we only spent about three minutes in the actual restaurant). I mean, I'm no food connoisseur either, but... Regardless - the food! that's what we're here for, not your usual nonsensical blabbering! Well, there are plenty of other reviews from people with more refined palates, so why are you even reading mine?? Did it disappoint? Not a chance. I ordered a half white with fries and coleslaw, and none of those choices were regretted: The chicken was juicy and very flavorful with the skin (there are sauces for the less flavorful portions, and the sauces were great too: one is dark green and seems to be a mash of peppers, and the other is light green and is more akin to a mayo mixture - very tasty), the fries were slightly crunchy on the outside and potato-y on the inside (like wedges... now that I think about it, they were just potato wedges...), and the sweet coleslaw was great alongside the two saltier portions of the meal! Overall, I was very, very satisfied with both the taste and portion of the meal. read more

Excellent food!!! You can see the chicken cooking when you walk in. We went when there wasn't any lines. The chicken had really good seasoning but had limited sides. They ran out of rice (so i had to get coleslaw... i hate coleslaw). Overall, this is one of the best chicken place i've been. it beats going to KFC The parking is TERRIBLE! But people do go in and out pretty fast. But for a place with that many customers they should get more parking spaces. read more

Delicious chicken. I wish they had a few more sides. Anything really. Mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, sauteed spinach, pickled beets, green beans, red beans, collard greens, kernel corn, anything. They have 3 sides and they are always starches (rice, french fries). El Pollo Rico or El Pollo Rundown? Area Impressions: Declining rapidly! In fact, there's a seedy looking motel and some vagrants nearby. Thankfully, no dead bodies around. Inside Cafeteria style layout. Limited Menu 1 meat option(chicken), a couple sides/desserts. LQQks are deceiving: So why is El Pollo Rico so highly rated on Yelp? Answer: Rotisserie station! Located behind the register where you order/pay for your food, you can't help but notice it. Once you smell/see the chicken rotating/cooking over some charcoal embers, it becomes evident why El Pollo Rico is so popular with the masses. Sauces: Comes with Jalapeno and Citrus Mayo. This place has all of the elements of a great hole in the wall. It's dirt cheap, it's got kind of awful atmosphere, and it's cash only! I got a quarter chicken with slaw, fries, and the two sauces (mayo + hot green stuffs) for only $5 and I couldn't even finish my meal. What a deal! :) My only beef with this place was that my chicken was burnt! As a result, it was sort of dry and not as yummy as I'm sure it should have been :( Saddd! The sides were very tasty though. I think that I'd come back though and give it another try :) If only I still lived in Clarendon... :) read more

Though El Pollo Rico has great chicken, I would have to say I prefer Super Pollo. EPR's lack of sides and the mediocrity of their only two sides really hinders the experience. Their chicken is great, but I think the chicken at Super Pollo is just as good. If you want additional side options, I would recommend Super Pollo. If you are just interested in chicken, you can't go wrong with either of these great Arlington Peruvian spots! read more

I love coming here! It's so fresh and tasty! The quarter chicken does the trick even when I'm hungry because it's a pretty hardy portion. The chicken is kept so moist during the cooking process. It is served with two side sauces (the white mild sauce - almost a mayo & the spicy green sauce - finely chopped jalapeños). I recommend mixing the two sauces together. The plate is served with two sides - coleslaw and French fries. Overall super delicious combination for lunch, dinner, or any time in between. The menu is limited, but they do not need to add anything else. This is their specialty! You could also split the larger plates among friends as another option. This place is definitely a hidden gem in Virginia Square. So glad that I gave it try because I have enjoyed every meal. read more

It's been around forever. Probably one of the first spin chicken joints in Arlington but they do something to the chicken that is deliciously different that makes a crispy skin. Their sauces are their own recipes and are great. The menu is pretty simple, chicken and thick fries. There's always a line. The sign of any good restaurant is when you see customers who know this food packing in to get some. read more

Scientifically and factually proven that the food here is the bomb. Seasonings 10/10 Price 10/10 Chicken 10/10 That magnificent white sauce *chef's kiss* 11/10 I've been a loyal patron for 22 years (or whatever age you can feed children solid food), my mother many years before my conception. We'll never get our rotisserie chicken anywhere else for as long as we live. My future mini-mes will be introduced to this Godsend whenever they get here. Look. I love this place. It's a true Arlington and DMV staple BUT the once super efficient process that marked this great establishment has seemed to stall a bit. I feel like they may have hatched, raised, killed and slow roasted the chicken while I was waiting on line today. Same with the beans and rice. They had to be cultivated from seedlings to justify this wait. Listen, it's simple. White or dark. Fries or not. Each person should order, pay and get their food in a matter of 90 seconds -- like it USED to be. That said, the food still is delish. So wait I will. But speed it up! Awesome tender, juicy, and warm chicken. The skin is perfectly soft and crispy and very flavorful. Get half regular (dark meat) with cole slaw and steak fries -- the portion is huge for $11, and you can bring home the other half for another day's meal! The chicken also comes with two sauces (yellow and green), and you can get one of each if you want. Green sauce was too spicy for me, but if you like spicy, go for it. I like the yellow sauce, which has an intriguing flavor (kind of like mayo but with a lemon-like bite), and it's not spicy at all, at least for me. Interior is cute, bright and colorful. Also worth knowing: my friend and I had just ordered around $100 in food and drinks at the end. Nothing finished. No refund offered, no apology, no manager. If management thinks letting one guard humiliate paying customers in front of their friends is good for business, here's your feedback. But to be honest... even with "fork and knife pizza" the toppings should not be goopy and slippery. Does the best pie and Arlington hold like that on the regular? Nothing special about the toppings either. The crust and dough were the best part of this experience, but an amazing pie, should have all component's complimenting each other. Is it decent pizza? Yes. Best pizza in Arlington? I don't think so.

I've been a loyal customer of pollo rico for over 26 years, which makes this experience especially disappointing. On Mother's Day (May 10, 2026), I ordered three whole chickens for a family lunch. Each chicken comes with two sides, and I also paid extra for two additional sides. When I got home and opened the bags, I realized two of the sides I paid for were missing (about $10.49). I immediately called the restaurant, and the person who answered was dismissive and rude. I was told I could "come pick them up if I want." I explained that I couldn't make a 30-minute round trip and requested a refund instead. I was then told only the owners could issue refunds and that a note would be left for them. Two days passed with no refund. I called again and was told to call back around 3 PM when the owners would be there. I did, selected the option to speak with them, and left a voicemail with my name and number--but never received a call back. At this point, it's not about the $10--it's about accountability and customer service. Mistakes happen, but how a business handles them matters. After decades of being a customer, this experience was enough for me to decide I won't be returning. read more

I am a chicken lover. I don't think I could ever give up chicken for anything, but this place makes me ADDICTED. I have been going to El Pollo Rico for some time now, and I have to say I crave this chicken at least once a week (but probably eat it more than that!). The combination of spices put into El Pollo Rico's chicken are absolutely some of the best way to marinade, spice, and cook chicken -- Peruvians have it down perfectly. I have had a lot of Italian-home cooked chicken and this restaurant always makes me feel like it's home cooked. They will offer you your choice of amazing potato wedge-cut fries, rice, or coleslaw as a side. But the real treat is in the sauces. One green hot and one yellow mild mixed together makes a medium sauce that gets me scraping my fries on the sides of the plastic cup to get out every last ounce of flavor. Finally, as if all that wasn't enough, the price is the best I've seen for this quality of food. Between $5-10 (cash only), and you can literally be eating in seconds or out the door. I recently visited this restaurant and was blown away by the quality of the food. First off, let's talk about the chicken. It was cooked to perfection, with a crispy exterior and moist, flavorful meat inside. It's clear that El Pollo Rico takes pride in their chicken, and it shows in the taste. But the sides were just as impressive. The sweet plantains were a standout for me - they were perfectly caramelized and had just the right amount of sweetness. Super Pollo: Forget it El Pollo Rico (EPR): The best! A) For all those complaining about Yuca... What's that great about yuca? I mean its ok. But Yuca vs. French Fries? Seriously... for all the people who complain about EPR not carrying Yuca, you can get dry paper-like rice-cakes at your local super-market. If Yuca was that great all DC area McDonals would be selling them. Sheesh. B) EPR's chicken rocks the house. There's a reason there's a long line for El Pollo Rico, there's a reason when they were first ones to sell the chicken, they were so good and so successful.. then everyone started copying them... sure there's some good presentations by other chicken places.... but trust the original. C) For the price, you can't beat El Pollo Rico. D) You know everyone who goes to El Pollo Rico goes for the food and maybe some Inca Kola ... although I always get the orange juice... which for me is a better compliment than soda or water. read more

Cheap, easy, and delicious. El Pollo Rico is easily the best Peruvian Chicken in the area. Simple marinated chicken that is cooked over a charcoal fired rotisserie. Ordering can't be any easier. You can either get a 1/4, 1/2, or whole chicken. No matter the size, the chicken is consistently moist, the skin is delicious, and the seasoning is just right. All platters come with fries and 2 different sauces on the side. The white sauce is similar to mayonnaise and is my favorite for dipping the chicken. The green sauce is chili based and hot, so be careful. The interior is open and utilitarian. Think more cafeteria than restaurant. That is all part of the appeal. You come in, get your chicken and some Inca Kola (tastes like bubble-gum soda), and watch as dozens of customers stream in and out of this little hole in the wall. Credit cards are not accepted, but there is an ATM as you walk in the door in case you forgot to bring cash. read more

I was here the other day. And I was very happy with the food. Did you know they cook it with a wonderful fire oven? Its a wonderful sight. Especially on a empty stomach. The smell alone gets one in the mood for food that's good beyond belief. The reciepe is also nicely seasoned. I'm very amazed. I went on google to find a similar reciepe. But i'm not sure my cooking abilities can recreate the great magic. Of course also I don't have that wonderful fire oven. I would buy that oven if I could. But I'll leave it to these guys for their great work. I will come back again. And again... And again. read more

Wow. Peruvian chicken is amazing. Who knew that plain rotisserie chicken could taste this good? The first time I had rotisserie was from Shoppers (the grocery store) and I decided I did not like rotisserie. Then, my friend introduced me to Peruvian chicken and in particular, El Pollo Rico. Muy sabroso! Ask for extra yellow sauce and mix the green chile sauce into the yellow sauce for an explosion in your mouth. Also, they started offering rice now, not anything special - stick with the fries. Another good Peruvian chicken place (that has a bit more variety with different dishes) is Super Chicken. read more

I'm mad. Mad that I've lived within walking distance of here for almost 3 years and just came here for the first time. This place is a hidden gem! The line may be long, but it moves quickly, and it's totally worth the wait. The Peruvian chicken is simply delicious. It's juicy, well-seasoned, and comes with two amazing sauces. The yellow sauce has a nice kick to it, while the green sauce adds a tangy flavor. The sides are also fantastic, especially the fries dipped in the yellow sauce. My favorite food at the moment is pollo a la brasa aka Peruvian Chicken, from El Pollo Rico. I have been to a bunch of area peruvian joints and this one is by far the most authentic and delicious, not to mention pretty light on your wallet. Get the plantains! And I prefer the yellow sauce but both yellow and green are ridic good - dip your chicken and fries in them to make your tummy happy. Line moves very fast, so don't fret if it's packed when you arrive; surface parking is a godsend in that area, as well; typically easy to get a space even at busy dinner rush. read more

You live in the DC area, well then you haven't really lived till you've waited in line for the good stuff at EPR. You can see the chicken being cooked with hot fire with your own eyes and the cuts get cut in front of you. That's what government workers call, transparency. And the food is addictive. If you are a Washingtonian or one who lives in Arlington, there is no reason to ever go to Kentucky Fried Chicken or Popeyes. I'd go to KFC if I am in some other part of this world. This is some of the best chicken I have ever had, period. The spicy and french fry sauce complimented the food well. This stuff is fantastic and highly addictive. I have brought many of my friends here and they all get hooked. 5 stars all the way!! The only cons that I could think of is that the parking can get hectic in the busy hours and the lines are long, but they serve fast so you don't have to wait in line too long. The best picnic food in Arlington. Take it down to the Potomac and enjoy. The line can be long at times and a little daunting but it is worth it. Ask for dark meet and extra sauce and you are good to go. Not sure how they make it so savory but it really is amazing. Parking can be rough but it's the city so what can you expect? read more
