Great place to eat. Is just not affordable I think I was over charge $35 for 8 tacos and 4 drinks?

Went on a Saturday morning around 10. It was packed!! Ordered the chilaquiles breakfast plate, and the refried beans and French fries were really good! The chilaquiles were ok, too many tortilla chips, not enough cheese in my opinion. The flour tortillas were super fresh, to the point of tearing a bit in the middle they were so soft! What's gonna make me go back is their carne guisada with cheese taco! Amazing!! Parking is tight, as well as where you pay up front. You're literally standing next to a table where people are trying to eat. But, plenty of room once you get past the register. Servers were very friendly, and food was pretty good! read more

Love the food, great quality. The customer service is what will stop me from going at all cost even from ordering to go. It's almost always packed you have to almost hunt down someone to get your name down and then the waiter doesn't pay proper attention as needed. Every time I order to go the lady at the counter, seems to be the same one is so rude. My husband once asked for sugar because the didn't have sweet tea(only un-sweet) and she rolled her eyes at him. Not to mention the other times where my to go order is wrong and charged wrong. I'd say go if you have patients and just understand what you might get yourself into! read more

Probably the best I've had during my visit to SA. I usually got the Papas a la Mexicana, and it was full of flavor! The portions were wonderful, and the price was cheap. The home-made tortilla's had really good flavor, I'd suggest this place to anyone wanting great Mexican food. read more

I have ordered menudo about five or six times from this restaurant, and each and every time the menudo has been consistently fresh, hot and delicious! This is a plain little hole-in-wall place that is frequented by the everyday, working-class juan, so it is a casual, come-as-you-are type of place. Are breakfast here whilst on vacation in San Antonio. Pretty good! Simple menu but don't order too much! Tacos are big and the plates have a good amount of food. Bean and cheese tacos are the bomb. Just like grandma use to make em. Also great green sauce. read more

Ok so Ive lived in SA for over 14 years and have sampled the local food dives all over the city and this place by far is one of the best spots for breakfast, there food is amazing, well prepared and the service is second to none. Fresh homemade tortillas filled with all your favorite breakfast items for example chorizo and egg, potato&egg and cheese etc... El Rafas is good it's worth it waiting the in the morning I mostly get potatoe and egg but it's good.

Mmmmm...handmade corn tortillas so thick, you'd almost think you were eating cornbread.

When you first drive into El Rafa's Cafe, besides the crowed parking, you quickly realize that it's a house converted into a restaurant. Upon entering, I admit, the way the table is set it up makes it crowded it but that's to be expected up a house turned into a restaurant. I order a glass of water with lemon, (my usually go to drink) a torta with carne asada with mayonnaise instead of mustard and no tomato, my mother orders the puffy taco platter and my boyfriend the fajita taco with cheese and a carne asada with cheese. When my plate arrives, I bite into a delicious hot torta that just seemed to wolf down my throat. My mother forgot to say no cheese on her puffy tacos so I take it and add it to my torta, I am verily disappointed, the cheese is all I seem to taste rather than my carne asada torta. The cheese drowns out the flavors and and I start to think if I hate the goat cheese they used for my torta or my mothers shredded cheese. My boyfriend says the same concerning the cheese flavor. Other than the cheese crisis, the food is delicious, the tortillas are made fresh. If you are going to eat anything with cheese in it, ask the waiter if you can try some or say you want some on the side because in my opinion the cheese was too harsh and it over powered the flavors of the meat. read more

We were visiting from Minnesota and were looking for really good Mexican food. Our hotel gave us a few options but we continued to press them. "If you could eat at any Mexican restaurant, where would you go?" We had a car and were staying downtown and told them we would be willing to drive anywhere within a hour drive. This is the place that was recommended. Fantastic enchiladas! I had the brown gravy one (with chicken) and my mom had the green one (again with chicken). YUM! Great food, unfortunately the Lady at the checkout counter is not friendly. Every time we have gone we never get a hello or a thank you. She never makes eye contact or asks you how your experience was. It seems as though she feels she's doing you a favor. Not a very good impression to leave on customers. I love this place! My husband and I eat here at least twice a week and it never disappoints. The waitresses are super friendly and service is always quick. Their tortillas are always hot and fresh and their menudo is one of the best I've had in San Antonio. Their daily specials of sopa de fideo, chile relleno and pork chop plate bring us back for more and for those enchilada lovers.... WORST EXPERIENCE IN A RESTAURANT EVER. to start off when we walked in on a Friday night about 7pm the place had three customers already seated, really only three on a Friday night, the waitress took 10 minutes before acknowledging that we were there. after our order was taken another 15 minutes had passed until our food was brought out. after about half way through the meal one of the three other people in there started screaming as if they were spooked by something in their bowl of soup. the lady yelled that there were huge mosquitos in her soup. the waitress came over to see for herself, she then explained that mosquitos and roaches had been a problem and a customer found a roach leg in their hot sauce. this was really grossing out another member in our party since he was also eating soup. when the manager came to the tables all he could do was say sorry all while try to hold back his laughter. when the member in our party asked, the manager told him that all soup was in the same container. we decided that dinner at Rafas was over. the waitress brought the bill to the other party and ours, and yes they were CHARGING for that mosquito soup. only after everyone agreed not to photograph what the lady had spooned onto the table (3 mosquitos) would he take it off the bills. and when we asked if he intended to throw out whatever was still in the kitchen he said he couldn't make that decision. you think if the ownership had good communication or didn't have employees probably intimidated that food safety would be priority over food loss read more
