I have been going to this restaurant for many years. It started out as a good place to get Mexican Food food but is now going downhill very quickly. I stopped in yesterday to pick up some food to go from my family about 730 in the evening. There was only one person working behind the counter and about four people waiting to pick up their orders. It was evident that nothing had been serviced in the restaurant for quite a while, and everything was dirty. The salsa bar had no sauces or anything else in there except for some jalapeños in some very milky liquid that made me wonder about the quality of it. I believe that their other restaurant on Haven Avenue is getting all of the attention and they're leaving this restaurant to flounder. My advice is if you want to purchase food from El Ranchero that you go down to the Haven Avenue store where they provide better service. read more

So apparently there is authentic Mexican food and then their is Tex-Mex. The meaning pretty much is found in the name but I guess the main difference is that Tex-mex uses yellow cheese and the other uses white cheese (yes i know that's not the correct terminology for them, but I'll put it into layman's terms just in case anyone doesn't know the difference between cotija and queso fresco or any other commonly used cheeses in these groups, plus to the naked eye that's probably the easiest way to distinguish between the two). I was speaking with a colleague the other day that also lives around the same vicinity as myself and as we were discussing each of our go to restaurants, according to them (this is their words not mine), in order to find true authentic Mexican food you have to go to Fontana and that this was more or less along the lines of Tex-m, I don't know how accurate that is but I always thought this joint was pretty authentic. Needless to say in my opinion without the whole cheese difference if you compare this place to something along the lines of Juanas (a drive thru Mexican spot around the corner from here) I feel like this place is a lot more along the lines of not being Americanized. As far as the plates go I always go with the taquitos as they are by far to me thee best around town and they are huge! You get some guacamole with them and I hold everything else and then you also get some beans and rice which I always get chips to dip into them, first into the beans as it serves as almost a paste like substance to hold in place the rice for upcoming dip. So on 9/7/23 at around 4:25 pm we got served by one of the Nastiest employee I've I ever dealt with. She had an attitude as soon as we walked in as if we were disturbing her. I asked for some sugar for my tea she replied we don't have any. I really wanted to feel confident in my choice for dinner last night, but I've spent the entire morning hugging the toilet. The reason I'm suspect that this spot is to blame is because I witnessed one of the male workers scoop up chips with his bare hands, then come to the front and touch all of the surfaces to distribute the food to a customer. Immediately after, he went to the back and scooped up chips, still with his bare hands and without washing them, into another bag (for my order), then he came up to the front to hand me the chips plus the rest of my order. I stopped in for a bite to eat before an evening game of kickball (yes, I play kickball). Anyway, I went with one of their 'NEW MENU ITEMS"; the Ranchero Bowl. The bowl is beans and rice, topped with your choice of meat (I went with chicken), cheese, pico de gallo (an onion, cilantro and tomato mixture), guacamole and sour cream. First off, all of the ingredients that go into this bowl taste good on their own. The guacamole has the great taste of freshly liquefied avocados. The pico de gallo also tastes very fresh with slight hints of spicy Serrano chiles and a slight tanginess of lemon to it. The beans and rice taste homemade. Lastly, the chicken, which is slowly cooked in a sauce of spices, is wet/juicy, chunky and very flavorful. Put all that together with cheese and sour cream and you've got one darn good bowl of food. On to the salsa bar, where they have four offerings: The "chunky red" salsa is full of flavor, where the cilantro and onion shine through. It is a little on the salty side, but the complimentary chips they give you aren't overly salted so together, they taste good. There's also a very tiny spice to this salsa. The green salsa is slightly spicy with a nice tartness to it, which has to be from the tomatillos blended in (as is traditional with green salsas). The red salsa is just plain hot! It has that HOT to it that sneaks up on you only after you've been tricked into putting a good amount onto your chip and it's too late to turn back. BAM! This hot will stick on the tip of your tongue and bite it more than you're able to bite into your burrito! Lastly, the orangish-pinkish salsa is the most deceiving of them all. It looks "cute" compared to the other salsas, but beware, it has a very, very dark side. This salsa (which must get it's orange coloring from habaneros) has the kind of hot that invades your mouth and storms your tongue like the soldiers at Normandy, only to set up camp in your throat, where bombs keep going off constantly and all you can do is wait for relief. Seriously, it is a hot that sticks around in the back of your throat. It's also the thickest of all the salsas. Overall, my first visit was great. I was greeted with a smile, didn't wait too long for my food (waited about 8 minutes) and I was totally satisfied with the amount (and flavor of the) food I got (that huge bowl was under $7.00). I'll definitely be back to try some more things off the menu. read more
