Our first time here and we were greeted and seated right away. Water, chips, and two kinds of salsa arrived immediately. Service was attentive and food was plentiful and good quality. My only issue was that I ordered the top shelf burrito that is supposed to be served with mole, but it seemed to just be enchilada sauce. Still tasty and HUGE (took more than half home). I went there with friends from church, today, for the first time. What a great surprise! I had the "Roy Special". The ingredients sounded intriguing, and I am very glad I took my friend's recommendation. It was as they say, "the bomb!". Those flavors really worked together, along with the refried beans and rice. The waitstaff were excellent, friendly and gracious. The price was very reasonable and the portion size exceeded expectations. I took over half of it home, and finished it off for dinner. Service was nice, but the food was at most mediocre. The wet Top Shelf Burrito was packed with beans, rice, cheese, and a bland asada. You could get better at Chipotle, unfortunately. I hate to waste, but left more than half behind. There was no spicy salsa to make this edible. Even the mole on the burrito wasn't flavorful. The Enchilada & Tostada combo was also meh. The large town of Fremont, quintessential suburban living, has always had 2 beloved and super popular sitdown Mexican restos, feeding said suburbanites with Americanized Mexican food that will prove to be serious comfort food for these folks. El Patio served the Centerville area and the north end of town. La Casita served central Fremont and the south ends. Both had serious regulars for decades. Then 2020 rolls around and La Casita goes bye-bye after 40+ years. You can imagine how many peeps this displaced. The Mexican fam who owns Cabrillo Cafe (a proven diner) teamed up with the main cook(s) from La Casitas and brought pretty much the old recipes back into the fray. They took over a space next to the diner, revamped it and the place is actually more modern now. The old place was a bit run down and decrepit. This place has a clean look with Mexican cowboy knick-knacks throughout and even has a mural or 2. House Margarita ($10/4*) Damn solid as the sour mix isn't artificial tasting, nice and lime-y. Totally reminded me of basic margs in Mexico served in basic bucket glasses. I'm not fond of super sweet margs with sweet floaters and am so down with just something basic and to the point. They use El Jimador Tequila as their house pour, again quite solid. Chicken Rice Soup ($5/4*) This is super popular here. I think back in the day, you could get this or a salad with your entree. Those days are long gone, here it is an extra order. It is very comforting as the rice is so cooked down that it is breaking apart and thickening the soup. The broth is very tomato-y and there are large shreds of chicken breast throughout the soup. I love this with a dousing of their red salsa and good a handful of crumbled tortilla chips from the basket. I was making Chicken Tortilla Soup as a 10 year old back in the day, long before one was ever on a printed menu. Lol Crispy Taco/Chicken Enchilada Combo ($17/3.5*) Totally looks like how I remembered it. But honestly I was always more of a fan of El Patio's flavors over La Casita's. I think La Casita was more bland to me, like really catered to very American palates. The sauces on this out, even the rice and beans were crazy muted. It was fresh and hot, and the textures were on point. But I had to ask for more salsa to douse this plate with to make it somewhat resemble Mexican flavors. Chile Verde Plate with added Fried Eggs ($20ish/4*) Got this on another visit and this was much more flavored. Not sure if the combo plates are meant to be more snooze-bound or if it were on off day, but I was relieved to taste some mexican flavors here. The cubes of pork were tender as heck, and fried over easy eggs melded into the sauce nicely. And when eaten with the rice and beans, just sent me to comfort food heaven. I just don't know why for a chile verde sauce, this was quite red from chunks of tomato versus all green from tomatillos. Still tasted fine, but just first time I've received 'red' chile verde. Lol Bar area is not what it used to be as the old bar was completely walled off, so bar peeps could do their thing. Here the whole bar is exposed and it is even near the entrance, so you are there for all to see. The bar stools are also kinda weird and uncomfortable, not sure if I'd want to do another round there. I ordered their number 1 combo meal. A crispy chicken taco, a cheese enchilada, a Chili Rellaños with Mexican rice and fried beans. A classic meal. It came with a cup of their famous chicken and rice soup. It was delicious, it was a favorite of the now defunct La Casita restaurant. The meal did not disappoint. It was all delicious. I was a loyal customer of La Casita for over 40 years and I can say this food now, is the SAME!! It's delicious!! Authentic! They even had the murals from La Casita! The owner brought us complimentary nachos and the service was top notch. The new bar is big and welcoming! There was a little bit of a wait, but well worth it. After drinks were brought we gave our food orders. We then received chips and salsa. Minutes later we received free nachos. Our meals were soon brought to our table. I mention the sequence of events because the employees here really ensure that you get the best and quickest service that can be offered. I don't think I saw one employee rest. I wanted to really like this place because it's closer than our usual place, but it just missed the mark on everything. The menu didn't state rice was included so we bought a side of it, big mistake. The rice has an awful flavor/mix of spices; it tastes nothing like Mexican rice. The chicken was plain salted/peppered chicken no flavoring otherwise. The guacamole was fairly rancid, it's a super dark green and tasted awful. This was a huge disappointment and big waste of money ($32) for one meal... Meal included 2 different cups of "sauces" very watery Pico de gillo and a funky red sauce (neither of which were salsa). I won't be returning nor recommending this place. read more

Split a combination plate with Chile verde burrito, white cheese and onion enchilada with red mole and a beef taco. The Chile verde was just like my family makes (perfect) and wanted to lick the plate! The enchilada could have been a little hotter the cheese was not quite melted. The taco was very good. The soup was just like La Casitas but was missing a little something not sure what it was but still very good.
