We stopped by on Sunday at about 10:30. We almost didn't try it because other reviewers talked about huge lines and tough parking. We must have lucked out, because I easily found parking about 2 minutes away, and we were able to walk in a grab a table in a very small place. So don't give up. Just check it out. I got the smoked salmon sandwich and a chocolate pistachio croissant. She got the poached egg bowl and an almond chocolate croissant. We both got lattes. Good golly Miss Molly, but those lattes were superb! I loved my sandwich. It wasn't exactly a bagel, as it was softer, a perfect holder for this type of a sandwich. NO hyperbole....perfect. Her egg bowl was unique and really tasty. I liked mine better. She liked hers better. Sounds like perfect ordering to me. lol. We both enjoyed our croissants. The pistachio in mine was very generous, a pleasant surprise. I prefer the pastry part to slightly more flaky and crunchy at the same time, but it wasn't exactly close. I'd rate it very good, just shy of excellent. By the way, the menu is limited with only 4-6 choices and yet it's unique and even fascinating. It's a terrific place near very interesting shops, so once done, it's a pleasant spot to walk off all of that food for a few minute. Highly recommended ,and worth your consideration. read more

Really cute cafe - limited seating though! This is a more intimate cafe. There were about 4-5 tables of 2 inside and 3 tables of 2 outside. There are pastries, coffee, and some brunch items offered. We thought the pastries were decent but the orange blossom waffle really blew us away. We were warned it would take about 20 minutes but it was worth the wait! Lightly scented orange blossom cream topped with pistachios, rose petals, and the cutest elephant butter pat and a side of maple syrup. The butter was cold so it wasn't great for spreading, but everything was delicious together. Many people also ordered the shashuka so I'll definitely order that as well next time. read more

When we visited Portsmouth NH we popped in to this bakery and what a fabulous find it was. The bear claw was very good but the poached eggs and salmon sandwich was not it of this world. The salmon was super fresh and the poppyseed bread it was on was soft and flavorful. The poached eggs had a sauce that was delicious and came with bread to soak up the sauce. Added benefit was: 1) the tables are in a really cute alley 2) the owner stopped by and was very friendly and loved talking to him about the history of the place. We will be back!! read more

NH residents consider yourself blessed to have this gem in your midst. I don't say this lightly but the poached egg cilibir is the best breakfast dish I've had in my 47 years walking this earth. The feta and honey danish was close to perfect. On top of that the staff is beyond warm, friendly and hospitable. Next time we come up to ME Elephantine will be a must visit stop. Absolute GEM! I was transported to Europe the moment I stepped inside this quaint cafe. The decor was absolute perfection and the food and drinks were top notch. We tried the simit (chewy bread with perfectly runny eggs and a delicious sauce), ham and egg croissant (crispy, savory, yummy) and cappuccino (not too foamy, not too sweet). How many times can I say perfection? Only hiccup was the online order (through Square) didn't work. Elephantine delivers on all things you could possibly want in the morning, served with a friendly smile and at great prices. I found Elephantine via Yelp on a weekend trip to Portsmouth. I was just looking for a breakfast place to get some coffee and small bites so based on the reviews I decided to stop in. Upon entering I was immediately greeted by the smell of brewing coffee and baked goods, a godsend from the cold morning I braved to retrieve such necessities for the AirBnB we were staying in. I was greeted by two friendly women who were extremely helpful in making the choice of nearly 2 dozen options in the Pastry case. I even got some education on classic European pastries and goods that I was not familiar with while they readied my drinks for takeaway. I settled on a lemon-ricotta danish and cinnamon roll, both of which were huge for the price paid and were delicious as well. The coffee drinks were spot on and the drip coffee was superbly balanced and brewed to eliminate any burnt or charred taste that you occasionally get in drip varieties. I walked away with 2 pastries, a bagel, and 4 coffees for a more than reasonable price (less than $20). I loved the vibe and overall feel of this bakery. It has quickly become one of my favorite in the New England area and we will return the next time we are in Portsmouth! read more

Before I say anything else, I've been to a lot of bakeries all over the world, especially in Europe. I can confidently say that their croissants are the best I've ever had in my entire life, hands down. Especially the chocolate almond croissants, which are perfectly dense, buttery and crispy, not the dry crumbly ones you're used to. Their interior is super aesthetic and calming. They have one table inside and a few tables outside. We ordered to go: dozen chocolate chip cookies, ham & cheese croissants, chocolate croissants, plain croissants, little olive loaves, and rosemary focaccia. Everything was fantastic, especially the focaccia and chocolate chip cookies. The focaccia has flaky salt on top-I'm just about drooling, reminiscing. Service was impressive and impeccable; they ran out of one of the croissants and for our trouble gave us a gift card to use on another occasion. What?! That's unheard of! Unbelievable: that was so incredibly generous of them. They also have a small menu and tables outside. FYI, they ship their cookies nationwide. This place is a do not miss. read more
