I went to Em last weekend for lunch. The restaurant was packed, and parties kept trying to walk in and being told about the long wait! We got lucky walking in at the exact right time. The space is nicely decorated, open and bright, with a lot of counter seating along the edges for walk ins. I tried the following dishes: Pho Ga (2/5): I did not like this pho. The broth was weak and not flavorful. The spices were not well imparted into the broth. The noodles were fine, and the chicken was fine. I would not order this again. Com Ga Nuong (4.5/5): This was an excellent com ga nuong. The chicken was cooked perfectly and was so tender and flavorful. The rice was also. really tasty. My one issue with the dish was that the nuoc cham was too sweet and had a too-low ratio of fish sauce to water / sugar for me. Overall, I had a good experience at Em and would return to try other dishes. However, I would not get the pho again. read more

We were surprised to find a Vietnamese restaurant in Dumbo while doing our Sunday walk, we promised that we will visit 'Em Vietnamese Bistro for dinner. Last night was that night, we trek to Dumbo on a rainy Saturday night. The place has a modern design and is spacious, we were seated at the back for the table for two. There are 2 pages of the menu, one for food and the other for drinks such as cocktails, wines, and local beers. We ordered the following dishes to share: 1. Crispy Vietnamese Spring Rolls made with pork, shrimp, carrots, glass noodles, onion, taro & wood-ear mushrooms, served with dipping sauce and lettuce. (We love wrapping our crispy rolls with lettuce before dunking it into the sauce). 2. Ly's chicken wings; Vietnamese Style fried chicken wings with garlic butter nuoc mam sauce topped with scallion and cilantro 3. Saigon-style lemongrass pork chops served with nuoc mam, cha (Vietnamese pork cake with mushrooms and vermicelli) over broken rice garnished with cucumbers, tomato, scallion oil, pickled carrots & daikon 4. Bo Kho (beef stew) Chef Ly's hearty take on the classic Southern Vietnamese Style Beef Stew featuring premium "gold coin" beef shank, lemongrass, ginger, coconut juice, onion, carrots, basil, and a touch of dairy. It's Beef Bourguignon made in Vietnamese Style. Served with Banh Mi on the side for dipping. The dishes came in a timely fashion and were freshly made. The beef stew stood out, it was flavorful, the meat melted in our mouths, and probably our newest favorite Vietnamese dish. For the price of a bowl of beef pho which is close to $20, I would have expected more beef and also more noodles. I'm usually not a big eater but even I found this bowl of noodles to be way too small of a portion size. In fact, I was still hungry after my meal. My fiancé finished his so quick because the portion size was so small. I've gone to other Vietnamese restaurants that charge less and also give way more noodles and toppings. This bowl of beef pho only had a few slices of beef for topping. If you want any additional toppings, you have to pay extra. I think it's a bit insane given the price of the bowl already. Taste wise, I also thought it wasn't anything special and have eaten much better pho at other restaurants. Overall, I felt the beef pho here was very lacking. Probably wouldn't be coming back here. Service was good, our waiter was nice, took them kinda long to get out pho out , but we also came right when they opened. I came here for lunch after ice skating nearby with a friend. The place is conveniently located near Brooklyn Bridge Park. The place was cute and there's actually a lot of seating inside. It was a really cold day so we both ordered the beef pho. The pho broth was a bit bland. I definitely put a lot of hoisin and sriracha sauce. Also, there were only two pieces of beef which didn't seem like much for a $17 bowl of pho. Service was meh. The server barely acknowledged us and didn't seem to want to serve us. The chefs at Em Vietnamese Bistro have once again outdone themselves. The garlic butter clams are still just as delicious as the first few times we had them, which demonstrates consistency in terms of the high quality of the ingredients, as well as the cooking skills of the chefs. The calamari and its avocado sauce is unbelievably delicious! I can say for certain that the avocado sauce is by far the best sauce I ever had, so please do yourself a favor and get this! The fried rice was extremely flavorful as well, with a strong sense of "Wok Hei," which translates to the Breath of the Wok, which you only get if the chef cooks the dish perfectly with a large fire! The fried rice paired perfectly with the pork belly, which is sweet, saucy, and meaty, which creates a wonderful symphony of flavors! The restaurant itself is spacious and the service is exemplary; Kenny and the other waitress took amazing care of us and made sure that my family, especially the children, were safe and comfortable! Em Vietnamese Bistro is a fairly new restaurant in the Dumbo neighborhood. After it's opening, I've heard numerous recommendations to try it out because the food there is so good. It took me about a year or so to finally try this place out after all the raves. What really deter me away are the prices, which reflects the lack of affordability of this neighborhood in general. They have another location in Bensonhurst Brooklyn, where the prices are cheaper. I got the beef pho and added meat balls ($20 total!). The texture of the noodles are a bit different than from the usual traditional viet restaurants I've been to. It's much thinner I believe. The real winner of this pho, which I think sets them apart from all the other viet places I've tried, is definitely their beef. Usually after cooking the beef to well done, the beef is tough at other places. But the beef Em uses is top quality -- the beef was so tender. I love their use of cilantro in the broth as well. It was a good bowl of pho, but for $20, I expected more protein. The interior of this place is very nice and chic. This place is closed on Tuesdays so keep that in mind. The food win here! The service meh. They're not super mean or rude but the service staff has a "I'd rather not be here" vibe - too cool for school. Something to mention, the wait staff is not Vietnamese so it not a cultural thing. I got the chicken soup pho. The broth is very tasty and delicious! The chicken was very tender, surprisingly because white chicken shreds in pho are usually tough and dry. But this place does it well. They don't bring a ton of fixings out like the sprouts, basil, lemon, etc. So if you want more you have to ask I guess. Also, the noodle to soup ratio leans more on the noodle side. To say the least, they serve the best fried calamari I've ever eaten. It wasn't soaked in oil nor was it caked in batter, it was just right. The calamari wasn't overly cooked, but just enough where I don't need to be chewing for hours. The sauce paired with the calamari was amazing as well. As a fan of their Bensonhurst location, I was intrigued and wanted to visit Em Vietnamese Bistro in one of my favorite neighborhoods in NY, DUMBO. The interior was beautiful and the color scheme made me feel so royal eating there. On top of that, the food was delicious. The star for me was Ly's Chicken Wings - freshly fried and juicy, sweet with an umami flavor from the garlic butter nuoc mam and a slight kick from the chilis. It was also my first time trying Hu Tieu Kho and it was an experience having the soup on the side of my noodles. Super flavorful broth and the soy sauce egg was sooo good. I also got the Watermelon Cooler which was just a watermelon slush - pretty standard, nothing to rave about. My only complaint which brings this review down to a 4.5 is the Pho Bo here doesn't taste as good as the one I've tried at the Bensonhurst location. The broth wasn't as rich and the beef wasn't as tender. Nevertheless, it was still a solid dish if I hadn't tried their other location first. If you're in the area, I recommend giving Em a shot. Stopped in on a very cold evening -- and ordered the pho ba (gluten free) and pho bo for main dishes. We started though with the yellow ginger tea (delicious -- tasted like warm lemon gelato with a ginger twist) and pea shoots (served warm in a garlic sauce -- very good). Both the pho ba and pho bo were hearty options with rice noodles and meat. Both came with extras to add in as desired. The proportions were hearty and we walked away quite full. This whole area in Dumbo and the tip of Brooklyn Heights really needed a good, real Vietnamese restaurant (besides Hancos.) The inside of the restaurant is a nice simple design with clean lines. The only thing I don't love is that the back of the restaurant seems a little dark and closed in, so I always prefer to sit near the front. The food is great. My fiancé and I have a routine - we split the spring rolls (which are excellent.) He orders the pho, and I order the pork over vermicelli noodles. The spring rolls are as delicious as the should be and I take advantage of the lettuce and dipping sauces that come with it. There are no banh mis on weekends.... Can we bring that back?! This DUMBO location is a significant upgrade from their 1st location in Bensonhurst, which received a lot of praise for their pho and was beloved for their homey, hole in the wall aesthetic. Though I was excited about my hometown achieving some status as a great place to visit for destination worthy eats, I wasn't impressed by their lack of vegetarian/pescatarian options at this location and no frills feel. So it was with some amount of disinterest that I read about the 2nd location of Em. When I peeped the menu, I noticed a wider breadth of offerings, including not just a long list of noodle soups and rice dishes, but a section of their menu they called tapas, which is where the menu gets really interesting. There you'll find Saigon style garlic butter clams and Vietnamese Style fried chicken wings. They didn't have the clams when I visited, but my table enjoyed the wings immensely. Instead I scarfed down the Banh Xeo, a classic Vietnamese turmeric rice crepe I've been seeing on more and more Vietnamese restaurant menus in the NY area. Would recommend to share for its crispy exterior and robust and flavorful filling. For my main, I tried the Hu Tieu Kho, a dry noodle dish with shrimp, eggs, chives, scallion, fried garlic and beansprouts and a bowl of soup served on the side. I wasn't sure whether I was meant to dip the noodles into the soup or just eat them side by side, but I poured the soup into the dry noodles and thought it went really well together because the broth was so flavorful. I was really happy with the portion and the flavor of the dish. They didn't have a liquor license when I went nearly half a year ago, and they don't appear to have one now, so I'm not sure this will change, which I wonder if it'll hurt them considering the area is known for establishments where you wine and dine folks. The owner did whisper to us about looking the other way if we brought something to drink in and were discreet about it, which we happily took him up on. We also enjoyed some of their non alcoholic beverages like the Yellow Ginger tea and Pineapple Express slushie. They did a great job with the interior decorating of the space, with deep green paneling on the walls and gold accents on the chairs. The rattan chairs, green booths, and framed photos along the walls really complete the space, as does the open kitchen. Em Vietnamese Bistro in Dumbo is a popular modern Vietnamese spot. We found ourselves there for early dinner, and it wouldn't have worked out otherwise because a queue started to form outside. I must add that the service is slow. We waited a good 5-10 min before anyone even spoke to us. And standing in front, like that, feeling unattended to is not a good feeling. They are understaffed as well. If that still is the case it might take a while for your dishes to arrive. The waiters are courteous and that's the better part of the service. The interior decor is bistro-y and feels nice. I do not know if I am alone in this, but I would rather have regular water. The water over here tastes different -- something's been added to it, and I do not dig it at all! The beef pho over here isn't any better than cheaper alternatives around the city. The beef stew is a good option. It comes with freshly baked bread that can be dipped into the stew. I think the beef stew was the better of the two dishes. The hype is real. I haven't even tried most of their menu items yet but I LOVE this place. I can't wait to come back! Firstly, I was so captivated by the modern and sleek interior design upon walking in. Usually modern Viet/Asian spots turn me off a bit because of the preconceived notion that the most "authentic" version of that cuisine is typically found at cheap, dirty-looking hole in the walls where service sucks and thus if you're eating at a modern, second-generation type place you're probably paying way too much for a gentrified version of mom's cooking. But Em is different. Maybe because DUMBO has been in need of a Viet restaurant, and it's not located in an oversaturated area like East Village/LES... nor is it trying to be another up-and-coming, hip, Williamsburg restaurant. Or maybe it's the story - the chef/owner is a Vietnamese immigrant, humbly opened the first location in Bensonhurst (Brooklyn's 2nd Chinatown) and has now expanded into DUMBO. It all seems pretty legit to me. Next, of course is the food and menu. I'm SO happy that they offer the Hu Tieu Kho / dry noodles here. I'm pretty sure you can't find this dish anywhere else in NYC. It is sooo good and with the broth on the side, it's actually the perfect in-between of being a proper soup noodle and dry noodle. As much as I love pho and bun (vermicelli noodles), sometimes I'd crave another type of noodle dish, and Hu Tieu Kho is exactly that. I did try the Beef Pho as well and it was also delicious - exactly what pho should taste like. Nothing particularly incredible, but still a great, reliable bowl of pho. But if you have limited stomach space / room for carbs, I'd recommend trying the Hu Tieu Kho instead of the pho. It's unique yet comforting and tasty. Different. The Banh Xeo was aaaamazing. Soo deliciously crispy and cooked perfectly. Also kind of a rare find here even though it's such a famous Viet street snack. $18 is a bit steep but very much worth it. Since we came for Saturday brunch, we had to get the Viet iced coffees as well. Hit the spot. Always recommend. I guess I just love that the menu offers quite a few items that are traditional Vietnamese dishes but can't be found at most Vietnamese restaurants in the city, while also serving up high quality and delicious versions of the classics - pho, coffee, etc. I'm excited to return to try the clam + mussel dishes, banh mi, and to have the Hu Tieu Kho and Banh Xeo again! I stopped by Em's in DUMBO on a cold Saturday evening for a cozy dinner. Prior to my visit, I was already familiar with their original location in Bath Beach. Compared to the food from that location, the DUMBO one had a more fleshed out menu and included a lot of seafood offerings in addition to the classic hits like their pho and vermicelli dishes. We ordered the spring rolls ($11) to start and their beef pho ($17), pork vermicelli ($17), and the beef stew ($20) as well as their mango smoothie ($10) and lemon ginger tea ($4). Their spring rolls were crispy and light and stuffed with chewy glass noodles, soft taro, and crunchy wood-ear mushrooms which gave such a great texture. Their beef pho was a little too sweet for my preference and compared to the other dishes we ordered, kind of just faded into the background. I do enjoy that it was a soup noodle dish which was very warming on the night we visited. The pork vermicelli was served dry with vermicelli noodles, lettuce, cucumber, mint, pickled carrots and daikon, and fried shallots that you toss together with the accompanying nước chấm dipping sauce. Their grilled pork was PHENOMENAL (as a matter of fact, their grilled dishes in general are amazing!) and so juicy and smoky. The beef stew was a really hearty dish and I definitely got beef bourguignon vibes as the stew was quite thick and fragrant. Instead of red wine though, the stew was flavored with lemongrass, ginger, and coconut. The vermicelli noodles were even better when slurped with the stew broth. We also ordered a lemongrass pork chop and broken rice ($19) and another order of spring rolls to-go for someone else which was also very well received. In fact, the smoky fragrance of the pork chops permeated the car the whole ride back. Overall, I think I would like to return to try their bánh xèo and their seafood signatures. read more

I love this place. We've been to the one near 86st I bay parkway and this one in dumbo is soooo much better. The food and service here is amazing ! Pho was so flavorful come sour piping hot and so much meat comes with it. Our favorite was the wings. Crispy and saucy not too sweet or spicy. The garlic makes the whole dish come together. Can't wait to come back to try their clams! Highly recommend this place. They usually have a line and take reservations for dinner. It's rare to find a good vietnamese restaurant in NY! especially when you're used to CA prices and options. However!! Em does a pretty good job and we were all pretty impressed with our food. Our usual go-to is 5ive Spice near park slope, but Em is a great option in the dumbo area. Prices are pretty average for NY Vietnamese places (around $14-15 for any noodle dish) For our party of 4, we each got a bowl of noodz and shared an app - Nem nuong cuon: very excited to see this on the menu, but if you're thinking it'll be the same as Brodard.. not quite. It is a summer roll (fresh rice paper on the outside), but instead of veggies, the inside contents are a pork roll, veg, and crispy rice paper for a good crunch. The sauce is also a little different than Brodard and not your average peanut dipping sauce. - Pho bo: classic beef pho. Flavorful broth with a few types of beef cuts. LOTS of noodles! - Hu tieu kho: dry noodles with soup on the side! Waiter suggested to pour spoonfuls of the soup as you eat. This was my favorite of the night! It comes with shrimp, soy sauce egg, minced pork and toppings. Again, LOTS of noodles! They definitely don't skimp. The only hiccup was one of the gals didn't get her entree until we reminded the waiter. At the end of the night, the owner came up and apologized. Moreover, he waived the price of her entree. Came here for a late lunch about a week ago. Let me begin by recommending everyone to dine here. The food is delicious, it's made to order, the prices are reasonable. On this day, it seemed that the workers were understaffed. Our waiter was a bit frustrated and overwhelmed, but he really made an effort to provide us with good service. I have no complaints! Em has been on my mind constantly since I first ate that delicious pho, and today, I finally returned on my lunch break for another bowl. Flying solo, I was immediately seated at a small table in the front of the restaurant. I ordered the pho bo and waited patiently. When the food arrived, I stirred in the bean sprouts and jalapeños, then requested additional jalapeños and cilantro. Next, a squeeze of lime, then mix it all together. A couple photos for the 'gram, then time to dig in. Moment of truth: it's delicious. Wow. The noodles were cooked just right, not too firm, not mushy. The veggies added great texture and flavor, while the meat provided a chewy umami joyride. Of course, the broth is the deciding factor for a good bowl of pho, and this broth hits the spot. At the end, I requested a small takeout container to bring home the last few ounces. I wouldn't yield a drop. Service was lively and attentive. Food absolutely delightful. I still haven't tried the nighttime tapas (lots of shellfish, to which I am allergic) but I readily vouch for the lunch menu. Don't sleep on Em. read more
