Em has been on my mind constantly since I first ate that delicious pho, and today, I finally returned on my lunch break for another bowl. Flying solo, I was immediately seated at a small table in the front of the restaurant. I ordered the pho bo and waited patiently. When the food arrived, I stirred in the bean sprouts and jalapeños, then requested additional jalapeños and cilantro. Next, a squeeze of lime, then mix it all together. A couple photos for the 'gram, then time to dig in. Moment of truth: it's delicious. Wow. The noodles were cooked just right, not too firm, not mushy. The veggies added great texture and flavor, while the meat provided a chewy umami joyride. Of course, the broth is the deciding factor for a good bowl of pho, and this broth hits the spot. Broth was flavorful! Crispy Tofu: Loved it. Honestly I obsessed with the dipping sauce and I was trying to figure out the ingredients of it so I can attempt to make it at home. Em Viet is probably one of the best Vietnamese places in NYC. It is not like your traditional Pho Bang/nam son/Thai son. It is much cleaner, modern, and better quality ingredients. The clams reminds me of the ones I had in Saigon. You just take one and slurp it into tou mouth. Each bite has the sweet taste of the tender natural clam along with the light broth. I enjoyed drinking the broth as is. Clams were very soft and now chewy as some places might serve it. The dry noodles were my favorite dish. The noodles are premixed with simple oyster sauce and you can wet it with a side soup/vinegrette dressing. Porkchops were solid and the egg next to the chop was better than usual. I went here earlier in the day with one other having looked for a close restaurant after stopping for coffee nearby at a very good Ecuadorian coffee place inside Dumbo Market called Zaruma Gold which I'm very likely not going to bother (good cold brew though https://www.yelp.com/biz/zaruma-gold-coffee-brooklyn.) I want with the Bo Kho, a "Southern Vietnamese Style Beef Stew featuring premium gold coin beef shank, lemongrass, ginger, garlic, coconut juice, onion, carrots, cilantro, basil and a touch of dairy." It is described as "Beef Bourguignon made Vietnamese Style" and it was served with some sliced Banh Mi for dipping. The stew was tasty with a good mix of textures and vegetables and the beef was tender. I would have preferred something a bit more then sweetness in terms of the broth but it was nicely rich. The Banh Mi slices on the side were much crustier then your typical which I liked in terms of flavors but it became a bit messy. The dish was $19 which was reasonable enough. The other person had the banh xeo or egg crepe for the same price. They forgot to ask for the vegan version and the very nice staff replaced it without any complaints. The vegan version lacks the pork or shrimp and they also replaced the usual fish sauce/nuoc cham with a vegan variety. I didn't try it but they liked it though I would say that the vegan version should probably be a couple bucks cheaper as it lacks the meat/shrimp and just contains a ton of bean sprouts and in general $19 is a bit much for the dish but the portion size was good. Tasty food here though my dish was definitely a lot more worth it for the price. The fact that the server replaced his dish without any issues was not just appreciated but was beyond normal service work. Kudos to him. Would go back to try more things. read more

Solid solid place for Vietnamese. All of the items are presented so beautifully, and it's clear they use quality ingredients. I came with a group of six for lunch, and although we called ahead only half an hour before we arrived, they were able to accommodate us for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. We got some apps and mains to share amongst the group, and also a few noodle dishes to split among the couples. Most of the items were good, a couple were just okay and did not stand out. Cha gio (spring rolls): came out piping out, nice and crispy and as good, if not better, as compared to other places I have tried. Goi cuon (summer rolls): a little underwhelming, you had to dip into the peanut sauce to really get any flavor out of it. I usually love summer rolls but would skip this dish next time. Ly's chicken wings: so good and flavorful! I was obsessed with the sauce (nuoc mam based) and other people in the group commented that you could really taste the fish sauce profile. Def recommend getting this. Bo luc lac (shaking beef): probably my favorite thing we ordered, definitely get the side of rice with this so you can eat it over the rice with a little bit of sauce, ribeye, and yolky egg. It came out sizzling hot and you literally have to blow on it before taking a bit, and even then it is still too hot, but then you can't wait and you just eat it anyway. The beef is delicious, and everything on that platter is tasty - even the scallions, I finished every last one. The egg looks like it was freshly cracked just seconds before it leaves the kitchen, but by the time you dig into it, it's fine to eat. I was surprised how much I enjoyed this dish, as I have ordered it numerous times at other places and it never left an impression, until now. Get it! Rice crepe (banh xeo): Beautifully made and presented. I thought the crepe itself was a little flavorless, so you definitely need to dip it into the nuoc mam sauce to get any flavor, which I thought was a little disappointing. However, many others in our group had never tried it before today and really liked it. Beef pho (pho bo): Broth was not memorable, but beef was perfect in that it was not cooked by the time the pho arrived. Lots of noodles, more than one person can eat on their own and perfect for us to share. Our server was great and brought us bowls so we could split it. Broken rice platter with pork chop (com suon nuong): liked it, the pork chop was well cooked and tasty! The pork and vermicelli loaf is interesting, a bit dry but not bad overall. The pork chop makes it worth ordering. Pork and shrimp noodles (hu tieu kho): recommended by our server, and another group hit! It was my first time trying this, it seems like this is usually a soup-based noodle dish but this version was dry noodles with soup on the side, which we just added in. Everyone didn't know what to expect for this dish, but was pleasantly surprised and said they would order it again. Def worth checking out! For drinks, they have something for everyone. Came here after a long flight from SF and craved some noodles on a cold day. I was looking to go to the new ramen place in Dumbo, but couldn't bear to wait. I saw Em was nearby, and I decided to go there instead. I ordered a beef pho and the wings. The pho really hit the spot. I do think that the portion size is a little bit small but if they added more noodles, it would've been perfect since they had an adequate amount of beef. The soup is super light which is one of the main things I look for in pho. I'm honestly surprised at this place does not have more people. It was pretty empty when I was there. As for the wings they were super saucy, had a lot of spices, fish sauce and garlic. I honestly would've liked it more if it was a little bit more crispy. But they were some really solid chicken wings. The decor is really modern and is not what you would expect of a pho restaurant.
