The Hu Tieu Kho was a tasty dish with rice noodles and seafood. It had a great mix of flavors - savory, slightly sweet, and a bit spicy. The fresh herbs and bean sprouts added a nice crunch. The most delicious thing that made a great impression on me was the soy-marinated eggs. The Ngheu Hap Xa, or steamed clams with lemongrass, were incredibly fresh and had a zesty, lemony taste. Broth was flavorful! Crispy Tofu: Loved it. Honestly I obsessed with the dipping sauce and I was trying to figure out the ingredients of it so I can attempt to make it at home. Avocado Smoothie: TASTES AS IT SHOULD TASTE!! I always get avocado smoothies at Vietnamese restaurants. If you have not had avocados in a sweet form, just take the leap and order it. A true Brooklyn standout, this restaurant does literally everything right -- affordable high-quality food with great portions expertly served in a cozy, yet seemingly upscale environment. This is the type of restaurant for any occasion. The bar seating provides a nice setting for solitary eating as well as small groups. We went on New Year's Day in the evening as a group of 4; the tables were all booked, but there was plenty of seating at the bar. Still, it was not very noisy so it was easy to have a conversation with those around. Our server navigated the area very well, often having to maneuver around the table directly behind us. Bun Thit Nuong (Pork Vermicelli) - An abundance of perfectly crisp grilled pork sat atop lightly seasoned vermicelli noodles, coupled with a small salad of romaine and cucumbers. Em Viet is probably one of the best Vietnamese places in NYC. It is not like your traditional Pho Bang/nam son/Thai son. It is much cleaner, modern, and better quality ingredients. The clams reminds me of the ones I had in Saigon. You just take one and slurp it into tou mouth. Each bite has the sweet taste of the tender natural clam along with the light broth. I enjoyed drinking the broth as is. Clams were very soft and now chewy as some places might serve it. The dry noodles were my favorite dish. The noodles are premixed with simple oyster sauce and you can wet it with a side soup/vinegrette dressing. Porkchops were solid and the egg next to the chop was better than usual. Came here on a Thursday night with a group of friends( 9 of us) after a running event, we were greeted and seated shortly. The atmosphere and decor is warm and cozy, very spacious too. We ordered the spring roll. The skin is very crispy and the filling is very well marinated, ordered the Bun Bo Hue soup noodle, waalaa it's so delicious just love the soup base and the pig feet very tender and tasty . I went here earlier in the day with one other having looked for a close restaurant after stopping for coffee nearby at a very good Ecuadorian coffee place inside Dumbo Market called Zaruma Gold which I'm very likely not going to bother (good cold brew though https://www.yelp.com/biz/zaruma-gold-coffee-brooklyn.) I want with the Bo Kho, a "Southern Vietnamese Style Beef Stew featuring premium gold coin beef shank, lemongrass, ginger, garlic, coconut juice, onion, carrots, cilantro, basil and a touch of dairy." It is described as "Beef Bourguignon made Vietnamese Style" and it was served with some sliced Banh Mi for dipping. The stew was tasty with a good mix of textures and vegetables and the beef was tender. I would have preferred something a bit more then sweetness in terms of the broth but it was nicely rich. The Banh Mi slices on the side were much crustier then your typical which I liked in terms of flavors but it became a bit messy. The dish was $19 which was reasonable enough. The other person had the banh xeo or egg crepe for the same price. They forgot to ask for the vegan version and the very nice staff replaced it without any complaints. The vegan version lacks the pork or shrimp and they also replaced the usual fish sauce/nuoc cham with a vegan variety. I didn't try it but they liked it though I would say that the vegan version should probably be a couple bucks cheaper as it lacks the meat/shrimp and just contains a ton of bean sprouts and in general $19 is a bit much for the dish but the portion size was good. Tasty food here though my dish was definitely a lot more worth it for the price. The fact that the server replaced his dish without any issues was not just appreciated but was beyond normal service work. Kudos to him. Would go back to try more things. read more

Came here after a long flight from SF and craved some noodles on a cold day. I was looking to go to the new ramen place in Dumbo, but couldn't bear to wait. I saw Em was nearby, and I decided to go there instead. I ordered a beef pho and the wings. The pho really hit the spot. I do think that the portion size is a little bit small but if they added more noodles, it would've been perfect since they had an adequate amount of beef. The soup is super light which is one of the main things I look for in pho. I'm honestly surprised at this place does not have more people. It was pretty empty when I was there. As for the wings they were super saucy, had a lot of spices, fish sauce and garlic. I honestly would've liked it more if it was a little bit more crispy. But they were some really solid chicken wings. The decor is really modern and is not what you would expect of a pho restaurant. It's also pretty big - we didn't have a reservation and got seated right away. Service was super friendly and attentive. We all really enjoyed the dishes that we chose. Solid solid place for Vietnamese. All of the items are presented so beautifully, and it's clear they use quality ingredients. I came with a group of six for lunch, and although we called ahead only half an hour before we arrived, they were able to accommodate us for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. We got some apps and mains to share amongst the group, and also a few noodle dishes to split among the couples. Most of the items were good, a couple were just okay and did not stand out. Cha gio (spring rolls): came out piping out, nice and crispy and as good, if not better, as compared to other places I have tried. Goi cuon (summer rolls): a little underwhelming, you had to dip into the peanut sauce to really get any flavor out of it. I usually love summer rolls but would skip this dish next time. Ly's chicken wings: so good and flavorful! I was obsessed with the sauce (nuoc mam based) and other people in the group commented that you could really taste the fish sauce profile. Def recommend getting this. Bo luc lac (shaking beef): probably my favorite thing we ordered, definitely get the side of rice with this so you can eat it over the rice with a little bit of sauce, ribeye, and yolky egg. It came out sizzling hot and you literally have to blow on it before taking a bit, and even then it is still too hot, but then you can't wait and you just eat it anyway. The beef is delicious, and everything on that platter is tasty - even the scallions, I finished every last one. The egg looks like it was freshly cracked just seconds before it leaves the kitchen, but by the time you dig into it, it's fine to eat. I was surprised how much I enjoyed this dish, as I have ordered it numerous times at other places and it never left an impression, until now. Get it! Rice crepe (banh xeo): Beautifully made and presented. I thought the crepe itself was a little flavorless, so you definitely need to dip it into the nuoc mam sauce to get any flavor, which I thought was a little disappointing. However, many others in our group had never tried it before today and really liked it. Beef pho (pho bo): Broth was not memorable, but beef was perfect in that it was not cooked by the time the pho arrived. Lots of noodles, more than one person can eat on their own and perfect for us to share. Our server was great and brought us bowls so we could split it. Broken rice platter with pork chop (com suon nuong): liked it, the pork chop was well cooked and tasty! The pork and vermicelli loaf is interesting, a bit dry but not bad overall. The pork chop makes it worth ordering. Pork and shrimp noodles (hu tieu kho): recommended by our server, and another group hit! It was my first time trying this, it seems like this is usually a soup-based noodle dish but this version was dry noodles with soup on the side, which we just added in. Everyone didn't know what to expect for this dish, but was pleasantly surprised and said they would order it again. Def worth checking out! For drinks, they have something for everyone. We ordered Vietnamese coffee, a smoothie (the castaway), and beer. There's even mocktails on the menu! Our servers were great and very accommodating of our requests. Came by on a recommendation from M.Y. and her brother B.Y. for a great place to grab a bite after climbing at nearby Dumbo Cliffs and was not disappointed! We ordered summer rolls to start which came out quickly and were accompanied by a hoisin and peanut sauce which added a nice but of crunch. The lettuce was fresh and had a nice hint of basil to make it a nice but standard summer roll. I ended up ordering the chicken vermicelli bowl which was smokey, textured, well flavored, and not too heavy after the climb. Paired with a pineapple mocktail, it made for a great and moderately dinner. T.H. opted for a pho bowl which like any good pho had a great flavorful broth. In a hilarious turn of events, I didn't even have a chance to steal some of his noodles before he was done. So why just 4 stars? I think one or two things could have had a touch more flavor for impact but I am well aware that sometimes the flavors of Asian food can be too much funk for the general public. I thought the dish was flavorful, but something I could make at home or find at a no frills joint in my hometown (SF) for half the price. With the excess broth, you dip the toasted baguette they have prepped for you. The bo luc lac, or beef cubes were cooked to a perfect medium rare with scallion heads in a demi-glacé of fish sauce, sugar and soy. Served with a big bowl of rice. Most Americanized pho I ve ever had . All they have in there is just beef slices . There were no beef tripes and eye of rounds and tendons. I understand giving the location and the ppl they are serving but definitely not the most authentic pho u get . On a brighter note the soup was on point and really amazing as I could tell that from eating pho over the last couple decades trying out all the Vietnamese restaurants all over the city . Another disappointing foray into NYC cuisine. Let's start off with the good: I liked the limeade. It was crisp and refreshing. Onto the not so good: the pho broth was utterly un-flavorful and tasteless. You know how some places claim to simmer their broth for hours or days? From the lack of taste, this broth couldn't have been simmered for more than 30 minutes. I had to pour every last drop of my allotted sriracha and half of my hoisin into the broth to get some semblance of flavor. I ordered extra filet, but I was left trawling the bottom of the bowl to find any meat - the meat portions were tiny. Lemongrass clams were briny and fragrant. Banh xeo was made super crisp and packed with goodies. They don't give enough lettuce/herbs but they just give you more upon asking. I do wish they had a larger variety of herbage but that's unlikely to happen in the neighborhood. The layout of the restaurant is very open with dividers between tables, which I thought was a nice consideration. We started off with ngheu xao bo-- clams with garlic butter and baguette. It was probably the highlight of our meal. The clams were so flavorful and the bread dipped in the sauce was a great touch. My friends all ordered the Pho Bo (beef) and I ordered the Pho Ga (chicken). I generally prefer to eat pho by dipping my noodles in a mix of the hoisin and sriracha, but the chicken pho was served with a sweet-ish herb sauce. It tasted okay, but I preferred my usual sauce mix. After I asked for the sauces, and my friend asked for some extra broth in his noodles, the waiter was quite dismissive of us, which made the experience pretty uncomfortable. Coming from Boston where a bowl of pho is usually $9-10, I was left disappointed after trying the pho here. I think the tapas are likely the stars of their menu, so I would focus on those menu items.
