Another disappointing foray into NYC cuisine. Let's start off with the good: I liked the limeade. It was crisp and refreshing. Onto the not so good: the pho broth was utterly un-flavorful and tasteless. You know how some places claim to simmer their broth for hours or days? From the lack of taste, this broth couldn't have been simmered for more than 30 minutes. I had to pour every last drop of my allotted sriracha and half of my hoisin into the broth to get some semblance of flavor. I ordered extra filet, but I was left trawling the bottom of the bowl to find any meat - the meat portions were tiny. I have no idea how this place has 4.5/5 on Yelp - maybe I ordered the wrong thing. Edit to respond to the owner: I didn't add lime before trying the broth, I'm not a simpleton. I came here for dinner with a group of friends on a Thursday evening. We had a reservation and were seated towards the back of the restaurant. The layout of the restaurant is very open with dividers between tables, which I thought was a nice consideration. We started off with ngheu xao bo-- clams with garlic butter and baguette. It was probably the highlight of our meal. The clams were so flavorful and the bread dipped in the sauce was a great touch. My friends all ordered the Pho Bo (beef) and I ordered the Pho Ga (chicken). I generally prefer to eat pho by dipping my noodles in a mix of the hoisin and sriracha, but the chicken pho was served with a sweet-ish herb sauce. It tasted okay, but I preferred my usual sauce mix. After I asked for the sauces, and my friend asked for some extra broth in his noodles, the waiter was quite dismissive of us, which made the experience pretty uncomfortable. Coming from Boston where a bowl of pho is usually $9-10, I was left disappointed after trying the pho here. I think the tapas are likely the stars of their menu, so I would focus on those menu items. Overall: I had a good time here and the food was good, but the food and service didn't impress me. If I came here again, I would order more tapas and not just a bowl of pho. read more

The interior space is beautiful and the service was great but I recommend them to turn down the salt notch just a bit. It also doesn't help that the tapas didn't come with rice. 2 of the tapas (clams and beef stew) came with bread which helped a bit but the sizzling beef was way too salty. Even the wings were too salty. I feel like I've been waiting YEARS for Em to open in Dumbo, and it did not disappoint! They had so many items on their menu that I've never seen before, so of course we went a little crazy with ordering. The space itself is absolutely gorgeous, and has plenty of dividers to keep you safe. All of the employees were wearing masks and everyone we spoke to was really friendly. We started with the pork summer rolls, which were huge and great for sharing. The sauce was slightly spicy, but complimented them well. I had the beef stew ($20) and it was incredible. The beef and vegetables were so tender they melted in my mouth, and I love that it came with a hunk of banh mi bread for soaking up the juices. My bowl was wiped clean by the end. Others in my party tried the lemongrass mussels (tender, but thought the broth could be stronger), the fried tofu, and the banh xeo. They do have vegan options available and/or are willing to make some items vegan, so everyone left happy. There were a couple of hiccups - we ordered drinks but didn't get them until we were 90% of the way done eating and they had to remake one of the vegan items to be vegan (it was comped in the end which was very nice of them), but overall it was a great experience. We were seated within minutes at around 3 pm on a weekend holiday with no reservations. We ordered Mango tango, the castaway, pho ga, banh mi burger and Dau Hu Chien. The castaway- nonalcoholic coconut smoothie with a milky taste. so good. Mango tango- I ordered this because I saw that they used fresh mangos to make the smoothies however, I tasted more yoghurt and milk than mango. pho ga- they used white chicken meat and the broth is flavorful. They also gave me a side of green sauce that's different from the crispy tofu green sauce. Honestly, it tastes the same to me. banh mi burger- so juicy, I love how the provolone cheese was already melted in the sandwich. Dau Hu Chien/ crispy tofu- I saw this dish on multiple tables when I walked by so I had to order it even though I'm not a tofu person. The green sauce is sweet, sour and salty which really opens up your palate. The crispy tofu was fried perfectly, crispy on the outside and soft in the inside. I really like how the waitress took his time and recommended some popular dishes when he saw that we were overwhelmed with the huge menu. Em Vietnamese Bistro serves up traditional Vietnamese flavors in a upscale/modern space just a few blocks away from the picturesque Brooklyn Bridge waterfront. We ordered the cha gio (crispy pork/shrimp spring rolls), hu tieu kho (noodle dish), and bahn mi dac biet (classic bahn mi sandwich) with two soda chanh's (which were super refreshing!). Cha gio - while this dish is a bit cumbersome to eat, we would order it again. The pickled vegetables offer a nice balance to the crispy spring rolls. And that dipping sauce is insane! Hu tieu kho - this a dry "soup" dish consisting of minced pork, shrimp, a delicious hard boiled egg marinated in soy (I think), noodles, and a medley of vegetables/herbs/toppings. Hot soup is served on the side and you can mix it in (or not) according to your preference. By far our favorite dish. Bahn mi da biet - this is your classic pork bahn mi sandwich. I didn't take good photos because I was just rly excited to dig in...So just FYI my photos don't do justice. We ordered the beef stew, banh xeo, and chicken pho. Beef stew was amazing. The sauce was so flavorful and the meat was perfectly tender. The French bread that came with was also good - airy. Perfect for soaking up the sauce. Loved the banh xeo as well. Very crispy and the pickled veggies and sauce was refreshing. The chicken pho was probably my favorite - I can see how others might find it "bland" but to be honest I find that most food in America are overly salted lol. The broth is exactly how I like it. Pretty solid Vietnamese restaurant in DUMBO. I've never had the pho so I can't comment on it but they do a pretty solid job of the other Vietnamese dishes available. Lemongrass clams were briny and fragrant. Banh xeo was made super crisp and packed with goodies. They don't give enough lettuce/herbs but they just give you more upon asking. I do wish they had a larger variety of herbage but that's unlikely to happen in the neighborhood. Loved their covid-era internal setup with the glass screens between diners. We're living in strange times so that's just one more thing I didn't have to worry about. So, overall we enjoyed our experience here. I would say nothing really stood out as being overly creative or special, but the food was good and we appreciated that the cuisine was modernized and was "clean" from a taste perspective. Foodwise I enjoyed the spring rolls (so good we ordered more), the chicken wings, pork rolls, braised pork belly (I actually make this dish at home- nice to see it on the menu), and the dry noodle dish... They also had as special- bun bo hue, which I've loved ever since my Vietnamese friend made it for me years ago. I'll just say it wasn't the star of the night. Hu tieu kho - I liked how creative this dish was because usually it is soup based - turned out to be extremely delicious as well!! Would recommend 4. Bun rieu (vegan) - first off well done for offering a vegan option; love that. For a vegan dish (no fish sauce) it was very decent but for someone who wants that true authentic Vietnamese taste - I would skip out on this. I am not a vegan but this is what I ordered and it was too plain for me! 5. Bo luc lac - do not get this; it was dry and lacking flavor. It also did not come with the usual rice and cabbage but instead just an egg. It was the most disappointing dish by far 6. Wings - the sauce was DELICIOUS; would recommend as they were cooked well. However, as a wing lover myself, I would say I've definitely had better wings else. Smoothies - green avocado one & the pineapple were both amazing!! Pineapple tasted like a dole whip!! 10/10 for both Overall the only thing lacking was the service and how long it took for the food and drinks to come out. Got the beef pho. Broth is way too salty. Either someone upended the soy sauce bottle into it (which you should never do, because you should use fish sauce) or they reheated frozen broth for too long and the water burned off. I am sad to be writing this poor review, as I really wanted to find a Vietnamese place in BK that I really liked, but this was such a disappointing experience. While the service was great, the food was sub-par. My main course was the Hu Thieu Kho that I read great reviews on. The noodles served were not the standard noodles served for the dish, the minced pork was lacking the usual umami flavor and instead coated with too much sugar. The broth that came along with the dish was decent. The Bun Ga Nuong was 90% noodles, and the meat was also overly sweet. Lastly, the chicken, while it was served quite hot, was also sweetened much more than it should have been. The common theme here is excessive sweetness, which might be appealing to others. The food did not at all taste like the dishes I ate as a child, as the owners are probably trying to cater to the whiter neighborhood of DUMBO. read more

The banh mi is better than the noodle soup. The only issue I have is that the bread they use is more softer. I am more used to a crunchier French bread that is toasted. Also, I would hope they would offer a tofu banh mi as I assumed that the banh mi chay would be tofu. Imagine my surprise when I opened the box and saw egg instead. WOW. This review is for takeout. Food was packaged very well! The Hu Tieu Kho is a supposedly a dry noodle dish with soup on the side. I wasn't sure how to eat it, so I first ate it dry and drank the soup on the side but the noodles were kind of stuck together so I ended up just pouring the soup in that made the experience more pleasant. The ground pork is seasoned so well and the chives really give it that extra depth. The shrimp were poached/steamed lightly so they were still nice and crisp and not overcooked and dried. Loved the ramen-style eggs in the dish. The noodles in this dish are like those in pad thai- straight flat rice noodles. The soup is a really light heartwarming soup (I can't imagine this offending anyone, really). We also got the Bun Thit Nuong. I'm a big Bun fan in general, and this really hit the spot. The pork was beautifully grilled and not too sweet. The mint, cilantro, and bean sprouts really balance it out and it's overall a nice and light dish with just enough flavor to it! The food is handled with care and the waiters here all enjoy what they do and explain all the dishes which is rare these days. Good Viet food! Ever since going to Vietnam, I've been on the hunt for good Vietnamese food in the city and this was a close one! My Viet friends recommended this place too. For drinks, we got the strawberry smoothie, which was pretty good. Very refreshing. The mango smoothie is supposed to be really good, but the mangoes weren't ripe enough when we went Next time! For apps, we got their Ly's chicken wings and garlic butter clams. The wings were very tender and flavorful, sweet and a little bit spicy. The garlic butter sauce that the clams came in was soooo good. Definitely reminded me of Vietnam. My only thing complaint would be that some of the clams had bits of sand in them. For entrees, my friend got the Pho Bo with a bone-in beef rib and and I got the Hu Tieu Kho. The pho broth was good. I didn't try the bone-in beef rib itself, but my friend said it was a little overcooked, but the other meats were fine. The Hu Tieu Kho was also good. Saw this place on a Fung Wah bros vlog and it surely did not disappoint. Got 4 different dishes and the coconut and Strawberry smoothie. Their smoothies are amazing qand taste like the actual fruits and not artifical at all. Was planning to order more smoothies to go unfortunately we were too full to stuff ourselves anymore. - spring rolls: soooo good. They were crispy, the lettuce was butter lettuce and so much better quality than your average viet place. It also came with a side of thick pickled radish and carrots that really elevated the flavors of the fillings and contrasted quite well with the crispy-ness of the rolls - clams were fat and juicy and a delicious buttery sweet clam sauce. It comes with a side of perfectly toasted bread to soak up all that extra deliciousness - shrimp skewers: huge and came with a spicy green sauce - pho: we got it with the short rib and it was huge. Definitely worth the $9 extra. The meat is super tender and juicy. Broth is excellent and portions are surprisingly large for dumbo. Visited after seeing on Eater as one of the hottest new restaurants in BK and once again I was left cursing Eater and Yelp. Space is beautiful inside, but easy to miss from outside. Staff was very friendly and provided excellent service but unfortunately I cannot say the same about the food we ordered. Ho Tieu Kho - dry noodles with minced pork and shrimp was the best dish we got 3.5/5 Bo Kho - Beef Stew. I don't cook much but beef bourguignon I made once during the pandemic was far better. I don't mind sharing the recipe. 2.5/5 Ngheu Xao Bo - Garlic butter clams. Waitstaff said this was a must order dish. Menu should be updated to "garlic BUTTER!!! clams" as there was more butter than anything else in this dish. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE BUTTER, but this was MIKE TYSON'S PUNCH TO YO FACE amount of butter. Clams were many just puny/tiny... sad. I miss my steamed clams at Pub 199!! 2/5 Maybe I didn't order the right things, but there is no way I can agree with Eater editors or all these ELITE Yelpers about how this is a 5 star establishment yet. Fantastic restaurant. Vietnamese food at large is really tasty, but here it is specially exceptional. This is an unpretentious simple restaurant, that serves amazing food. The entire menu is mind blowing, and mouthwatering, but do not miss the soft shell crab and the bành xéo (truly unique). Service is very nice. The waiters make the place fun and the food flow with almost no waits, and takes the restaurant to a whole higher level. The guy who serves water was really fun and nice. This team could not be better. Someone here knows how to build a team. This alone can make anyone's day. Now, the one thing that is not great is the space and it's design. I'd say that is totally uncared, but maybe someone put care in it, but just did not know how to do it. However, the design of the place is not at the level of the food and the service. We had spent less than 30 minutes total at the restaurant, including the time it took for them to prepare the food. We had just finished eating and the manager asked if he could take our bowls away. Immediately after, he came back with the check. I understand that you're closing for lunch break, but if you can't accommodate customers and allow us to enjoy our meal, don't seat us in the first place. We would've happily gone to another restaurant had we known we were going to be rushed out the door. Instead, they wanted our business, but also wanted us to leave ASAP. When it comes to the actual food, you wouldn't be missing out on much anyway. I've never had such oily pho. The flavor of the broth was nothing special. The noodles were overcooked and soggy. The only good part was the beef. Overall, would not recommend. Don't bother coming here unless you're looking to be rushed out the door.
