Ember is my home away from home. Good food, good beer, and the staff takes care of you. The wood fired pizza is amazing (they nailed the dough recipe btw), and the atmosphere is open and inviting; not that I really care about atmosphere. We waited for our main course for an hour.. the longest ever we waited for a fine dining restaurant and just for an appetizer (Duck wings) and a pizza. Our sweet tea just got refilled once. My wife and I stopped here on a whim. Neither of us we particularly hungry but we thought we'd like to sit at the bar and have a drink. We did not have reservations and it was a Saturday evening. When we arrived, the bar was pretty full but there was one empty stool. My wife took the stool and I stood. We orders drinks and watched the action in the kitchen and the monster wood fired oven. Exactly, and I mean exactly at the time I started to think that I'd like to be sitting, one of the staff brought me a stool. It was like they read my mind. We decided to split a meatzilla pizza as a starter. It was between delicious and damn good. Crunchy crust and real steak bits on it. Perfectly sized to share as a starter. Watching the food come out of the kitchen, it was clear what to order. My wife got a crispy Brussels sprouts dish served on an old roofing slate. She loved it, I ordered the short rib which looked like a brontosaurus bone. It was served with risotto and mushrooms and was absolutely delicious. For desert, we had a dark chocolate, graham cracker pie. Perfect! Our entire bill was about what lunch cost at some foo foo place nearby, and much better. The lack of the fifth star is only due to the lack of a tv in the bar. We wanted to watch some final four action and would have stayed longer and drank more if we could have. So I've been wanting to try this place for awhile now and tonight was the night. My first impression at the door was not good. The hostess seemed to be annoyed that we did not have a reservation. Very little personal energy at all. The atmosphere is fantastic. It's a very nice and quiet place. If I was grading solely on presentation I would give it 5 stars however the entrees fell flat on favor. Everything we had was very bland and unimpressive. I had the Snapper my wife had the shrimp and the kids had pizza. The pizza had very little cheese or sauce, the snapper and shrimp entrees were very bland. We went to this wonderful restaurant while visiting our daughter. The seafood dish with grits was superb. The seafood "chowdah" with red snapper was very good too. Meatless gnocci was delicious. Excellent curbside food tonight from Embers. On-Time, great value, terrific Fire-Bread and Salads that were enough for 3-4 instead of the orders for two we placed a and very nice staff. Tonight was our first experience there. Overall, quite good, but with some "notes." When one enters one sees a very cool/creative interior and one is overwhelmed by the smell of smoke. (Actually, as I write this, a couple of hours later, my clothes still smell like that smoke ...) Kudos to the interior designer. [Their HVAC guy, well ...] We had the fingerling potatoes, the bahn mi pizza, and the Cesar salad, splitting everything. The potatoes were quite good but the sauce was not as excellent as two staff members proclaimed. The pizza was incredibly creative and tasty! The salad was grilled and creative -- really nicely done. I had a beer (tasteless and way overpriced); the other person had a glass of wine ("acceptable"). Here's a summary ... - Food quality: 4.5 - Food creativity: 4.5 - Food quantity: 3 - Service: 4.5 - Interior/ambiance: 2.0-4.5 (depends on how much one likes smoke, I suppose; the tables are rather close together) - Value: 3.5 All-in-all? It was a good experience! We'd go back. But, in no way was it a "5." We've been around the block with so many restaurants so I think we have seen the top and bottom of the scale. (Sorry for not gushing -- as some other reviewers have ...) Side note (NOT a factor in my review): When you enter -- check out the large wooden door with the offset hinges (hinges not at the edge of the door as one would usually find. It's beautiful -- and nicely designed to crush or amputate hands -- if caught between the part of the door between the hinges and the jamb -- tremendous mechanical advantage there. Don't let your small kids play with it. (Really, it is a VERY cool door, if potentially dangerous.) Did I say the pizza was REALLY good??? [yum] read more

Love this place! Amazing and interesting cocktails and great pizzas. Mary (the chef) and Jason (the bartender) are very nice and always welcoming. The place has a pretty nice vibe on the inside. The food was okay. I got the arancini and chicharrones to start. The arancini were very good. I probably wouldn't get the chicharrones again if I went back. I got the yardbird pizza for my meal. It had decent flavor but was a bit soggy. It took FOREVER for the meal to come out (probably close to an hour and a half) so by the time it came out I wasn't really even hungry anymore. The waiter said they could only make 4 pizzas at a time and there was a large party eating there. From other reviews on here it seems like an issue they need to correct so they can get food out faster. read more

Ember was awesome!!! It is now my absolute favorite place on the Island! The menu changes but I can't imagine that there will always be something incredible to order. I had a vegetable bowl with zucchini noodles. The flavors were so so good. My Mom had the shrimp dish, she said hers was fabulous. Our cocktails were so fresh and delicious. I now want to eat there every night. They have the cutest bar with pool tables and darts, the music was great and the art is great! I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. I felt the pleasure of dining here in my toes. This was the slowest I have ever eaten, because I had to process the satisfaction of it all for at least a minute per bite. I lost track of the world around me as the food engulfed my senses. Definitely a legitimate farm to table restaurant with some of the best flavor profiles, each of which have immense depth, that I have ever experienced. I got the brie with jam and oven baked bread, followed by a noodle bowl with pork belly. It was to die for. Cocktail were also delicious and the only legitimate way that I could even begin to process the caliber of the food, How do I move on from a dining experience like this... Mary is even better than everything I heard from the farmers who supply her with a lot of the ingredients. Go here. Lose yourself. Wow! This was one of the best meals I've ever had! I am visiting from Cape Cod with my friend and we were equally impressed. Started with crispy Brussel sprouts which they were happy to alter slightly to accommodate my dairy allergy. They were incredible! Next I got sea scallops over indigo grits with broccolini and my friend got lamb lollipops and shrimp scampi. There are almost no words to describe what this quaint little, fiery restaurant did to my soul. This place brings a whole new meaning to having an out of body experience. From the first bite of brie with raspberry jelly to my last bite of the meatzilla pizza and every glorious bite in between - it was an experience all its own. I literally have never had food taste as *insert positive adjective here because there really isn't a word to describe it*. My brain had to fight the intensity of the pleasure I was feeling after every bite. To put it into perspective, I was not able to finish the last slice of pizza on my plate because of the realization that this new magical reality would have to come to an end. I was not prepared for, nor could I handle that thought at that time. I would highly recommend walking into Ember with an empty stomach and a lot of self-awareness because the food there will change your soul - and forever alteryour relationship with food. Décor is nice. Specialty drinks at $10 a pop were terrible. Pizza and Steak were fairly good but wood-fired oven could have been hotter and pizza crust crisper...a bit soggy. The real issue was the hostess. It was a last minute decision to dine here and early (5:10 pm). No one was dining at the tables, only the bar had some patrons. I glanced at the reservation book while I asked her for a table, the reservations book was blank. She told me that there were no tables available. I gave her the "really?" glare as she told us that we could eat at the bar. I was going to walk out but my daughter really wanted to try it out. When we left over an hour later....exactly 2 tables were seated. Where are we Manhattan, with that kind of attitude? Better not to treat the locals like peasants or they may not return. read more

I specifically called ahead and asked if Ember was welcoming to young children (ages 5 and 7) because I noticed there wasn't a kids menu online. I was assured kids come all the time and get pizza. When we arrived, it was clear our server was annoyed that we had kids. He was not accommodating or helpful in the least, never returned to ask how our food was, and then brought us the bill without ever asking about dessert, which we wanted to order. In short, the experience wasn't great, the food was average, and the dining experience took incredibly long-- 2 hours and it was not busy at all. We will probably not be back. read more

I'm so excited that there's finally a place like this on SSI. I've wanted to try Ember since it opened, but I haven't had the chance until tonight. Coming down from Atlanta, I miss high food quality when I'm here for long (fried seafood is great, but it gets to be too much after days of eating it) and despite a number of nice island restaurants, none of them ever manage to impress me. After learning that they were finally open to the public, I made a reservation to check out this soon to be hot spot! Chef Mary Schowe is back on the scene with a Farm to Fire approach to cooking local and regional ingredients utilizing a large wood fired oven, which is also a focal point from the bar and dining area. We started off with a couple of Ember's specialty cocktails, The Southerner and Sweet Heat. Both were spot on! Highlights from dinner were the truffle salt roasted fingerling potatoes with black garlic aioli, speck pizza with caramelized onions, black mission figs & local honey and "Sapelo Farms" goat meatballs with fire roasted tomato sauce & eggplant chips. The grilled Caesar salad was also a hit! It is my understanding that the menu will change while maintaining a few staples. I can't wait to go back and see what's next on the fire! read more

A modern open space acsented by a glowing tortoise shell bar greets you as you enter Ember. A stoked pizza oven warmed us on this cool night of our first visit. The margherita pizza and lamb, that was cooked in this oven, was fantasic. Chef Mary seemed to be grilling hundreds of heads of romaine lettuce, one of which ended up on my plate providing one the the best cesar salads I've had in a long time. We sat at the bar where we were served like royalty by Jason and Rich. Great specialty drinks, decent wine selection and beers on tap kept us satified. Very cool place to hang out with freinds, as we did. Ember is a great addition to the growing line-up of restaurants on Saint Simons Island. We'll be back....soon. read more

Ok, so we walk in, no hostess and reservations list laying on podium. four couples on the list. There are 20-25 empty seats in the dining room. Hostess arrives, "do you have a reservation?" "No". "it will be 45 minutes". "but there are plenty of tables" We're holding them for reservations, you may eat at the bar, it's first come first served" Needless to say we walked out. advise you make a reservation, which you can do via answering machine as they don't answer the phone, I tried to call to relay my experience to a manager. local resident of 30+yrs, dine out 3-4 times a week, none of which will be here.
