Just finished lunch at the Empire Diner. I ordered a Greek salad with no protein. It was 12.95 so I thought I was getting a fairly large bowl of salad for that amount. What came out was slightly larger than a side salad with old lettuce, radishes, onion, 2 black olives, cucumber, tomato and feta. It turns out the waitress gave me the junior lunch special salad even though I told her I didn't want soup or anything else. When I brought it up to her, she said "oh, I gave you the lunch special" and just walked away. I haven't been ripped off like this in a while l, nor have I had such bad service, so it stings a bit. I thought what she brought out was a $7 side salad, which I would have been totally happy to pay. Do yourself a favor and eat anywhere else. This is the closest diner to where I live and haven't tried it yet so figured I needed to venture out and give it a shot. I'm a huge diner fan. When I moved out of New York for 5 years besides pizza and bagels the thing I missed the most was diner food. There are so many solid diners on the island and Empire ranks probably right in the middle. Food was good, but pretty typical for diner food. I ordered a spinach and feta omelet with home fries and rye toast (a standard I get at a lot of diners). It was good. The reason why this place receives a 3 instead of a 4 is because of the service. The waiter was very inattentive and seemed flustered over everything. When he took our drink order I asked for a cherry coke (I love how they make cherry cokes at diners by adding the cherry syrup to it). He looked at me like I had 10 heads and had no idea what I was talking about. When he came out with our food order I asked for some jelly for my toast because there was none on the table. He goes "what do you want" in a slightly "i'm too annoyed to be dealing with you right now" voice. Took him a bit to process what I meant, but eventually he realized and got me some jelly. Then after we were done eating he was standing around doing nothing (literally just standing there by the counter) and we tried to wave him down for the check for about 20 minutes until he finally realized. Service aside, not the best diner on the island, but definitely will hit the spot if you're craving diner food. I'd just avoid the dude we had for a waiter. read more

Went to Empire Diner early on a Friday Morning. Ordered corned beef hash with 2 eggs over easy and french fries with whole wheat toast. Order came out hot and cooked to perfection. Corned beef had a nice crispy outer shell and the eggs were runny as desired. French Fries where cooked crispy. Waitress was very attentive and wanted to fill our coffee cups at least 5 times during our visit. The portion sizes are great and I could not finish my meal! read more

WOW !!! I live in Bethpage so our "goto" diner was Luxe, until it closed. We have been trying all the diners in the area and most were so so...Until NOW!!! This is the kind of diner I knew as a kid. Great food, reasonable prices and SO. MUCH. FOOD. If you liked Luxe you will love Empire. I thought they were great but Empire beats it by a landslide. I just wish I could give them 5 more stars. I came here tonight for dinner and ordered the chicken gyro platter. It was soo disgusting and I wouldn't even call that chicken. I explain to the waiter that i can't eat this because its not edible and she basically tells me she will exchange it gyro meat. The next plate was even worse and the chicken gyro strips had a funky smell. I didn't eat anything and I still had to pay for this shit. Never again. You all have been warned. Though the parking is a bit tough, this has become my go-to diner in the area. Prices seem to be lower and the food seems to be a notch better than the diner up the street plus, it's usually less crowded here. While the food isn't served in abundance like that other diner, the portions here are still large enough for an above average sized human. Other than that, the aesthetics and service are similar to the rest of the diners on LI... old school. The waitress although not very friendly wasn't very rude. The cooks got one of our orders wrong (cheese on a regular hamburger) and then another person at my table ordered an omelette with french fries. There was a total of less then 20 french fries on my plate. Not a "side" if you ask me. We were also given the bill before we finished eating without asking if we wanted anything else. Another solid diner out in Long Island, I've come out here on my trips out to Ikea. They make light fluffy pancakes that are the size of your entire plate. The servings are large, the service is fast, and albeit being in a weird location, they've been pretty busy on the weekends that I've eaten here. read more

Let's face it, it takes a talent to screw up diner food, though there are so many deceptively bad diners.
