Visiting Erewhon has been a dream of mine for years. So glad I was able to stop by while in the area. The store is full of normal and unique grocery items, catering to all dietary needs and tastes. It was a 15 minute wait so I browsed the rest of the store before my order was done and it's very similar to Whole Foods/sprouts. The ambiance is very robust and modern. I ordered a Hailey Bieber smoothie. The cashier said the wait will be at least 30 minutes due to the busyness. I decided to order it anyway since it's what I came for. It costs $19. For the next 30 minutes, I walked back and forth along Abbot Kinney Blvd. I returned just in time and my smoothie was ready. I fell in love with this precious & expensive smoothie on the first sip. The strawberry flavor is well balanced with the almond milk, coconut cream and sea moss. Sister was in town so I did the bougie thing and dragged her to Erewhon with me. First time! The parking lot is TINY, but there is someone actually directing traffic in the lot. The area to order smoothies is to the right when you walk in. Obviously came here due to the notoriety of the expensive smoothies, so I had to get one. I got the recommended Hailey Bieber smoothie (honestly I'm not huge on pop culture, I just know she's Justin Bieber's wife and that's it). It was really good! I felt healthy sipping it, haha. If you haven't heard of Erewhon yet you may be living under a rock. Erewhon is so on brand with a certain LA stereotype, haling itself as the grocery designer store. Forget keeping up with the Joneses; we're here to clobber them. Not many grocery store experiences start with the valet in the parking lot. The parking lot at this location is especially tiny so you may see a line forming out on the street. You'll be forgiven if you confuse it for a car show or the drop off at The Beverly Hills hotel as the lot will be filled with G Wagons, Range Rovers, and Teslas. Anyways, you go inside and you are transported into a different world. The smell of a higher tax bracket is in the air, mixed with candles of unicorns and aura crystals. They've definitely elevated the ordinary grocery store experience to something; don't want to be confused and mixed up with the poors and too-commercial whole foods shoppers, you know? Depending on when you go, anywhere between 10 and 50 percent of shoppers are just there for the food court, mostly to have the honor to have their lips blessed by those bougie $20+ smoothies. If you went to Erewhon and didn't get a Hailey Bieber smoothie, did you even go? Jokes on us because they have such strong brand recognition, they are probably charging their suppliers an inclusion fee to proudly list them as part of the ingredients. Not many can boast the same level of cultural cachet. The staff is extremely friendly and likely underwent intense training which surely prepared them to masterfully deal with any do-you-know-who-I-am Karen and diffuse the situation by assuring them they are indeed the most important person in the world. As a bonus, you'll get to practice your valley girl accent, like oh my god like literally no joke, I'm so dead right now... So you may be asking if those smoothies are worth the exorbitant prices but that would be the wrong question. Going back to the analogy with designer brands - many charge not based on how much it costs to make the garment but what the market would bear; the price is not so much a byproduct of the means of production but the main deterrent helping to weed out the other in order to form the it crowd (some may call it the fan base, others a cult). So when someone is rocking the $150+ Erewhon tote bag, it's not because they thought it cost more than $15 to produce but because having it is used a signal to others about their status and values. read more

"The grocery store from Boston that's a California icon" And there is no Erewhon more famous (or infamous?) than the one right here in Venice Beach. Yes, this is the store featured in the Daily Show interviews where locals said their cat will decide if they take a vaccine. This place is fancy. Basically the highest end grocery store - think Whole Foods 20 years ago when it was on Top Chef. And expect to spend your Whole Paycheck at about $100+ a basket, $400 or more for a cart. Even a jar of soup or a meal at the hot bar will run you about $30. But you're paying for some great quality stuff with ingredients that benefit you somehow (I'm no expert so I'm strongly assuming this). Aside from the groceries and hot bar, this place has a juice bar. The smoothies have become so famous that now it's almost a juice bar with a grocery store attached instead of the inverse. Yes, smoothies will cost you $20 - $22 (more if you want to tip the suggested 10-20%). But the smoothies are worth it as an occasional treat as they include a ton of stuff and some have ice cream. Disclaimer: They currently have a Lakers themed smoothie so that automatically bumps up this rating. Service wise, there are a ton of people working here. Don't expect to wait long at the register. Do expect someone to follow you around the cramped aisles asking if you need suggestions on what to buy. Overall if you want something nice and an occasional treat it's worth stopping by. Ok, I had to give and give this place a try while on a work trip. Erewhon of course gets touted for its highly expensive products, but I was shocked that most of it is actually a fairly normal grocery store. A lot of normal natural type products at kind of normal city prices. It's really the prepared foods and baked goods that have the high prices. I of course had to try the Hailey Beiber smoothie, service was friendly and it came out within just a few minutes. I took it to the little side patio seating area to enjoy. Unfortunately it was probably the best smoothie I've ever had. The coconut cream in contrast with the fresh strawberries is a heavenly combo. I was really curious if Erewhon could be crazier in terms of selection and price than Bi-Rite in SF, which is a place where it's hard to get 3 things and not spend $15-20. Well it turns out Bi-Rite is peak crazy but Erewhon is also peak crazy. They are similarly priced and have a similar selection of stuff (with many of the same brands). Bi-rite has the edge on cheese and alcohol (Erewhon doesn't have booze). Erewhon might have the edge on prepared food, but the prepared food at Bi-Rite is good too. Erewhon is literally the high-end THEME PARK of grocery stores in LA. Now let's be clear - if you are ballin on a budget or not in the top 1% of income earners in LA this is not your weekly grocery store haul spot. I treat this as more of my monthly goodies and gems pop-in for the delicious hot bar, soups, and other one offs. But if you can afford it, they do have a monthly membership and I know the quality of the food here is top notch. No crummy seed oils or junky ingredients in the pre packaged foods or hot bar. The food here is absolutely delicious and I also just tried the Hailey Bieber smoothie because a friend was in town and it was like an ice cream treat - very delicious but quite sweet. You'll often run in to celebs of all caliber here (hence the "theme park") and this place can honestly get quite nutty on the weekends (especially in the summer). So if you're not looking for crowds, don't come then. They have valet parking or you can either try for the parking rows behind Abbott Kinney or in the residential neighborhoods a few blocks up the street. Yes, I am back here on a Monday night. The service here is great, from all of my peeps! Joe was the best guy here! We didn't know what to get at the sweetness bar, but he sure knew where to steer us. The prices are definitely a lot higher than most grocery stores but what they sell is high-quality and healthier for you. The most expensive stuff I would say is the food and drinks that you can grab and go. I decided to try the Hailey Bieber strawberry glaze smoothie which I absolutely loved. Despite it being $18, it tasted pretty amazing and was packed with a lot of nutrients. I also tried the combo plate where I got the buffalo cauliflower, the Bean and kale salad as well as the mac & cheese. I enjoyed all three of them very much. The only thing I didn't love is that the worker didn't tell me that it was based off of weight, so he ended up filling my plate to the brim and it cost me $30 for one singular plate of food. While the food was quality and the servings were large, I would've liked to know that I could've asked for less because I wasn't planning on paying 30 bucks just for side dishes. I made it a point to come here right after landing at LAX. I had to know what the hype was about. In some ways it was exactly what I thought it would be. The staff is very polite. This Venice Beach location feels a little cramped, but they did well to keep it neat and organized with the limited space they have. First of all my journey with Erewhon began over 25 years ago. I'm in my 60s went to the Venice La fest took my one year old multi-Pooh. He was so tired and so hungry. I was elated when I saw. Erewhon I carried him in the store and was met with a very unkind unprofessional Security guy who continue to follow me around the store and say how my dog should be on a leash we went straight to the prepared food section. I got his favorite chicken breast and a few other entrées no the shopping. He stood very close and harassed me the entire time even after I checked out, he told me I'd have to leave the store. I watched Dogs five times his size going walking down the aisles they had leashes, but they were obviously not Service Dogs however, very well behaved the food is always delicious. I talk to the manager afterwards. She was wonderful, but this guy could have potentially ruined the entire experience. He was very disrespectful, unprofessional, and following anyone around the store is short of harassment. My dog didn't reach out to anyone he did bark at the end of the experience at the guy in my face talking very disrespectfully to me. He was despicable, but thank you, Erewhon for the wonderful young lady who served us our food and a very polite and wonderful manager. Everybody knows it's expensive, but I tried to justify that in the Bay Area, you'd pay $20 for a meal anyways. For the hot bar foods I paid $21 and the sushi sandwich was $22. All together with a drink my meal was around $45. The portion sizes of both were huge. I definitely preferred the hot bar items over the sushi sandwich. I liked the carrots, but could've made it at home. The sushi sandwich's rice was too fried and tasted a bit greasy. There could've been more fish, but I'm still curious about the other rolls!
