For the price of dinner (well over $100 per person excluding drinks), there were 2 things why that moved me to a 4 star review. 1. When making a reservation, they asked if we were celebrating anything, and I put our 22nd wedding anniversary. Then, nothing was mentioned all night. I don't know why they ask for such details if they're not going to do anything about it. 2. Beautiful French style restaurant that is home to many regulars so reservations are strongly suggested or you may not get seated. They have a beautiful bar seating packed with the old guard that you'd probably only get a seat their if you arrived at 5:00pm. 'probably many ex-pats from the old Houston's that has since been shuttered'. That said, the food is as good or better than most of those big named steakhouses in the city and the prices while they are not inexpensive - maybe 20% less than those Poplar Ave establishments. Wife was feeling curry so went with the snapper and I choose the filet, both were safe choices and they delivered! Erling Jensen is my favorite spot for date nights, holidays, and events. The food and drinks have never let me down. The service is very professional and well-coordinated, but therefore the atmosphere is less warm than some other local restaurants with a more casual style of service. It's a good value at $75 for five courses (Thursday and Friday) and $45 for three courses on Sunday only. I have not ordered a la carte yet, but it all seems excellent. My favorite dishes have been the deconstructed beef Wellington, the duck confit en croute, the "shrimp, corn, tomato", and the pecan tart (ie fancy pecan pie). Dishes I didn't love include the sweetbread, the bison filet, and the chocolate mousse dessert. I love their Manhattan After Dark cocktail and their wine pairing offerings. read more

Im writing this review extremely late (months later) which i know is a nono but i cant keep the dining experience out of my head. I shared dinner with another person and sat in the bar area because the dining room was completely booked. After eating here i see why! Food- I ordered many different items including Wagu steak and the entire time my mind was blown. The level of craftsmanship the cooks exercise is truly artistic. Each course was truly a cohesive dining experience that followed a earthy, fresh narrative. The staff chose how to course the many dishes we ordered and perfectly anticipated when each dish would be most appropriate. The Chef came out to check on us as well which made out little table in the back feel that much more special. The entire experience is aimed to make your dining stress free and exceptional. Starting with the front door complementary valet parking, and the professional host and staff who are so friendly. The walls have original art, making the space feel as if you are dining inside an intimate art gallery setting. We know chef Jensen is one of the top chef's in the entire southern region, so we had full confidence whatever he puts on a plate will look amazing and taste even better. Amazing!!! From the food to the service everything screams fine dining. It is in a quaint location that makes it feel very intimate. Our server was wonderful! Her name was Lana or Llana (sp?) She was patient (as it was our first time) and very willing to explain and go through menu items. She even came to our table once our items came out to ensure that we liked it and implied that we could try something different if we didn't. That never happened. Everything we tried was amazing!! My fiancee and i love to dine here. We have come multiple times over the last few montha and have loved it. Unfortunately the most recent time we came in to eat we were told rather abruptly at the door that the kitchen was closed (9:13) without even a hospitable greeting. We had dinner 5 days earlier and our bartender was very lacking and seemed to have something better to do than attend to the rather busy bar. Even the gentleman next to us mentioned several times she had forgotten his martini, in addition to ringing in items incorrectly. We will come back, but address the rudeness of the "maitre de" at the front and the bartender. read more

My son made us reservations so that we could enjoy a dinner together for Mother's Day. We parked across the street and walked right over. The restaurant was small and intimate. We sat in the dining area immediately to the right. It was very quiet, almost to the point where you wanted to whisper during conversations. Due to the holiday, there was an option for a preset Mother's Day menu, which included 3 courses. I enjoyed a nice salad and for the entrée I decided to go with the redfish. My son chose the salmon. Absolutely fantastic. My significant other and came out to try the Chef's Tasting menu and it was insanely good. The pairing of wine to each course was elegantly thought out and complimented everything nicely. The first course was a yellow fin dish. Nothing crazy but I wasn't sure how the rest of the meal was going to be based off this first dish. In hindsight it was light and fresh which was a great start to the meal. Second course was a burrata with beets, plums, fennel, and this beautiful black garlic vinaigrette. I know it's almost crazy to say but I maybe could have done with out the burrata because everything else was so good but I really can't complain. Third course was a sea bass, cacio e pepe, grilled lemon, and rosemary cream. That sea bass was the star of the entire meal. It was perfectly cooked and the grilled lemon really came through and complimented the fish. The pasta was good but nothing to write home about. (I'm writing this an hour after dinner and I'm still thinking about that sea bass). Fourth course was a wagyu strip, acorn squash, and a pumpkin puree. A very good combination that was thought out very well. The squash was insane and I could've kept on eating it. For my first experience with wagyu, it was good but nothing out of this world like I thought I'd have been missing. Lastly we had desert and it was a caramel Bavarian cream which was nice and light to end the meal. Overall our waitress Rachel was attentive but not pressing and really aided to an amazing experience. I applaud the chef for his choices on the menu and the execution of each dish. During a weekend stay in Memphis, hubby and I chose to have dinner at Erling Jensen after a good bit of "research" on the best places to eat. We love a restaurant who wins awards; gets us every time! My husband started off with the foie gras, which he said was very tasty. Accompanied by candied pepitas and apple butter, which was different but nice. The bread would have been better crust-less (it was a bit hard to eat) but overall, a good dish. I went with the soup du jour, which happened to be truffle. It was exceptional! Rich and velvety. Thicker than I prefer, but it made for an awesome bread dipper! I loved this. For entrees, Hubby did the buffalo tenderloin (cooked very well, nice and tender, a clean flavor) with two sauces that were excellent. Could have been seasoned a bit more for his taste, but it was still a dang good plate! I chose the salmon. It was a nice big piece cooked just like I like it. The hollandaise and crispy proscuitto were an excellent contrast on top. And the fingerling potatoes were yummy as well. For dessert, we shared the chocolate souffle and the vanilla orange creme brulee. The souffle was cooked a tad too long, but that was the only "complaint" (and not a very big complaint either). The creme brulee was a nice end to the meal. Not overly rich, which was perfect. Overall, a great experience. We'd definitely come back another day - on our next trip through town. read more

We celebrated our anniversary in the bar at Erling Jensen. I chose the bar because the menu appealed to me more than the traditional menu. Although there are not many vegetarian options I selected two items from the daily specials to try and my spouse tried the soup of the day along with a lobster salad sandwich with fries. I loved the salad that was a twist on a caprese. I also had the gnocchi which was not entirely vegetarian. The chocolate soufflé that we split was the star. Asked if I was celebrating anything, I thought that was nice as well. Just going out to eat though. Service was excellent. The food was exquisite, I had the crawfish bisque, ostrich filet (MR), and chocolate soufflé. I didn't know if I'd like the ostrich or not but it was lean and tender and I loved the purée and the roasted potatoes and onions it was really and amazing dish. The bread and all the morsels in between the meals were amazing as well. Satoko was our waitress and she did a awesome job suggesting wine to go with dinner, which I really enjoyed. Unfortunately, their expensive prices don't reflect a great meal. The restaurant is nicely appointed and I always appreciate an owner working and overseeing how the restaurant is doing. In this case, they just missed. The food was good, but not great. Salads and soup were probably the best part. We had the crawfish soup and the romaine salad with pancetta, and the oysters salad. That was by far the best of the three. Entrees included the special Halibut x2 and the red snapper. Honestly, they weren't that exciting, but at $49 a plate, it should have been special. Desserts were 5 stars- the soufflé and the blueberry cobbler with cinnamon ice cream were delicious. So for the 3 of us, with wine was $262...pricey. That's fine, but at that price, I expect 5 star service and it was a 2. We were rushed, plates weren't cleared in a timely fashion, water glasses sat empty and our server was very unprofessional, even though she said she worked there 6 years. And to top it off, she reached across us several times, bumbed my chair repeatedly and almost hit my head with the salad plate clearing had I not ducked. She made the dining experience miserable. The owner shouldn't put up with that service at those prices. I expect a 5 star experience from the food, the table service, and everything in between. There are other places I'd recommend first, with the same quality, better service and at far cheaper prices. Food was very nice and in a satisfying amount. They offer a small piece of homemade bread and this was very good. The sauce for the salads we had was a bit too sweet for me. The building feels a bit old inside but ambiance is still nice, with several rooms and a lot of small tables placed in a way you forget your surroundings.
